Brave Decisions Goes Beyond the Battlefield
This is a great compendium of moral and ethical choices made at various stages during fifteen different officers' careers. Colonel Maihafer outlines the uncommon courage displayed by some of the most famous and also some unheralded leaders in our military history. From Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant to Patrick O'Rourke and Alexander Haig the author walks us through very tough decisions that shaped the lives and careers of these great men. He couches the choices they made through the context of their personal thoughts and circumstances. Instead of exposing the reasons why the commanders decided to commit to battle on a particular day or to wage a certain campaign, Maihafer explores questions like why did Lee decide to fight for Virginia and the Confederacy, and not the U.S. constitution he was sworn to defend before the outbreak of war. Why did Maxwell Taylor, as Superintendent of West Point, over-ride the academic board and institute the academy's first formal class on leadership, and why did he ultimately resign as the Army Chief of Staff? Brave Decisions explores these questions and more throughout its pages.

Patton once stated that an officer's career is made up of about three minutes worth of time when he or she actually makes decisions that have great impact. This book helps illuminate a few precious seconds of the careers of fifteen courageous officers. Any leader, whether assuming command or not, will benefit from referring to the chapters of Maihafer's book. Cadets to general officers make various choices throughout their military careers. Brave Decisions illustrates a few of those choices at each level of command. From cadets deciding to resign from the academy to fight for the Confederacy to senior policy makers in Washington DC deciding to relieve a general officer, the choices outlined in the book convey the immensity of the decisions. All leaders, junior and senior, will face choices that have grave impact for themselves, their soldiers, and their country. Vicariously experiencing how other successful officers have considered similar situations allows us to shape our own moral concepts to better handle similar trials we may face in the two or three minutes that make up a career. I highly recommend reading, studying, and keeping this book as a reference for the future. All leaders, whether junior or senior, can glean valuable knowledge and forethought from scrutinizing the pages of Brave Decisions.

Required Reading
By Sen. John F. Kennedy, Profiles in Courage, is, on the surface, merely a fascinating look at some of the courageous senators who helped steer our country to safety in times of turmoil. Taking a more introspective look, one can see the way that the future president sought to live his own life- always striving to do what was best for the nation, regardless of political consequences. "Courage" was a trait that John Kennedy admired the most in men. It is intiguing to read Kennedy describe the character displayed by U.S. Senators during perilous times in the history of our country. This book should be required reading in every high school in America.

Small World
THE BRIGHT COUNTRY is a heartbreakingly beautiful, sad, hilarious, touching book that flows and burbles along like a favorite trout stream. I've probably bought 6-8 copies of the book over the years and loaned, given or otherwise forced it upon at least twice that number of people. It's not a perfect novel, but is easily the most honest look I've ever encountered into the heart of a guy I wish I'd had the opportunity to know. There's more than a little bit of trout fishing, but this is a book that hooks non-anglers as well.

A Bright Ending
I can't write Harry Middleton to tell him how much I admire his writing, or how much his stories and themes resonate in me. He died not long ago. And if I may quote Russell Chatham, "It hurts to know that Harry Middleton rode the back of a garbage truck every night during the wee hours to put groceries on his family's table." It's true. It's part of this story.

This is the moving, affecting story of Middleton's struggle with depression, his mother's death of brain cancer, and, most memorably, a blind trout on the South Fork of the Platte River. Like all of Middleton's books, the language is wonderful and the characters are memorable. Perhaps more so than most, this book is Middleton laying his soul bare, telling a story as it happened, cutting close to the bone.

And if flyfishing isn't the whole story here, it is part of the path to redemption.

Harry, we hardly knew you, and I wish there had been more time, and more books. But you will live on for me and for those readers who discover you. Ollie ollie oxen free.

A wealth of practical tips, tricks, and techniques
Collaboratively written by professional non-profit organization fundraiser Harry A. Freedman and Florida-based journalist Karen Feldman, The Business Of Special Events: Fundraising Strategies For Changing Times is a step-by-step guidebook that effectively instructs the reader in every step of organizing a successful fundraising effort in today's technological era. Individual chapters specifically address how to create a balanced budget; secure corporate sponsorship; maintain accurate records; get serviceable publicity; provide food, beverages, and entertainment at fundraising gatherings; and more. A wealth of practical tips, tricks, and techniques make The Business Of Special Events a top-notch and highly recommended resource.

What a how-to guide!
I purchased this book several years ago and I still refer to it whenever I am planning a special event. Freedman & Feldman provide a guide that literally lays the groundwork for conducting a successful special event (I hope that is not a Kent Dove title). Every subject from selecting the right event to post-event evaluation is covered in this resource.

Great pains are taken to illustrate the areas discussed and tips abound throught the book. I found the samples of event materials particularly useful in gaining an understanding of some of the principles that are illustrated.

The Business of Special Events is a must have edition to your library. A great resource for volunteers, chairpersons, staff and Board. I completly agree with George R. Reis, Editor, Fundraising Management when he says "When other writers discuss special events, they often quote Harry Freedman. This book is the final word on the subject."

Very good
An excellent historical mystery, with Collin's Nate Heller filling the role of an real-life private detective who investigated the murder of Sir Harry Oaks.

Look for the reference to Dick Tracy that Collins ames at the end: "It hurts."

Intense storyline
A fitional novel about an actual event that held my interest better than any other non-fiction books on the Death of Sir Harry Oakes

AN UNKNOWN JEWEL
WHEN I PURCHASED THIS BOOK, I BOUGHT IT MAINLY TO ADD TO MY COLLECTION OF ISAAC ASIMOV NOVELS AND ANTHOLOGIES. I WAS SURPRISED AND PLEASED TO FIND OUT THAT IT WAS ONE OF HIS BEST ANTHOLOGIES, AT LEAST IN MY MIND. THE STORIES SELECTED BY ASIMOV AND HIS TWO CO-EDITORS, MARTIN GREENBURGH AND CHARLES WAUGH, WERE RICH IN CHARACTERIZATION AND THE STORYLINES WERE SPELLBINDING, EVEN IF IT WAS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT MANY OF THESE SITUATIONS WOULD OR COULD EVER OCCUR, BUT SUCH IS FANTASY! ANOTHER REASON I , ALONG WITH THOSE I LENT THIS BOOK TO, ENJOYED IT WAS THE FACT THAT MANY OF THE AUTHORS WHOSE WORKS WERE SELECTED WERE OBSCURE; NO ONE I KNEW HAD HEARD OF THEM. BUT THE MAIN REASON WAS THE FACT THAT MOST, IF NOT ALL OF THE STORIES DID NOT END ON A DOWN NOTE. THEY ALWAYS CONTAINED SORT OF HOPE OF SURVIVAL. I READ THIS BOOK TO PIECES, AND WAS DISAPPOINTED WHEN I FOUND OUT IT WAS OUT OF PRINT, AND NOT LIKELY TO BE RE-ISSUED. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK, IF YOU CAN FIND A COPY. SURE HOPE I CAN!

A few things to think about
The stories in this book range from not likely to frighteningly real--the ways that humans are capable of destroying themselves are depicted in accurate detail. A must read (again)...if only I could find a copy!

Fantastic collection of stories
Last year I picked up a copy of "A Century of Horror" at my local Barnes & Noble store. It was so good I bought others in the series, including Century of Science Fiction and A Century of Fantasy. All are excellent. Silverberg and Greenberg did a superb job of selecting top notch stories, including stories by Fritz Lieber, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Philip Dick and James Blish. If you like Science Fiction and you like the short story format, this is a must-have for your collection.

Very good SF Collection
This collection of SF shorts from the 1950's is one of the best collections of it's kind. Highly recommended for folks who like good SF.

Character Above All: David McCullough on Harry S. Truman
Published in Audio Cassette by Simon & Schuster (Audio) (1999)
Authors: David McCullough and Simon & Schuster
Amazon base price: $5.98
Average review score:

A tasty appetizer for David McCullough master work,
Truman. An entertaining one hour speech peppered with anecdotes covering the failures & successes of Truman. There may never have been a person to succeed to the president as unprepared & in such a time of national crises. We were about to invade Japan with perhaps two miilion men & 600,000 casualties. One thing he did know. He could not be Franklin Roosevelt. Nobody could be. He had to be Harry Turman. He knew himself, grew into the job & ranks as one of our near great presidents. Apparently the most important experience of his life was World WarI which he could have avoided in several ways. He found he was brave, he could lead men in adversity & he liked it. He had known disappointments, hated farming, failed as a businessman & was largely ignored as "The Senator from Pendergast." He was honest, stubborn to a fault, loyal, humble but most of all confident in his abilities. You get a flavor of all this in a much too short tape. Read McCullough's "Truman."

A stirring example of character and leadership
This cassette should be compulsory listening for ALL leaders. I have heard it dozens of times and it never fails to keep me on track. McCullough's great voice speaking about the character of a great man has produced the finest short audio tape on leadership that I have ever heard. I bought several hundred copies and gave them to managers. Put the character traits of Truman into today's business world and what an improved world it will be. BUY THIS TAPE!! Listen to it many times. It will have a HUGE effect on your life.

Greatest Players of the mid 20th century
Written by a Swedish Grandmaster and translated with authoritative fluency, 'Chess and Chess Masters' by Gideon Strahlberg and Harry Golombek respectively, is a confident and interesting account of the great chess players which Strahlberg himself encountered and met. With a chapter on all the greats; Capablanca, Euwe, Botvinnik, Alekhine and Spielmann to name but a few, no chess library would be complete without it.

elegantly written potted histories of great chess players
this book is in descriptive notation and it was written half a century ago by a swedish grandmaster who was a candidate for the world championship.the names are well chosen-alekhine capablanca nimzowitsch botvinnik reshevsky-all players the author knew and often played against.

the writer has been very well served by his translator grandmaster harry golombek probably the greatest stylist ever to write chess notes in english. the sketches are sometimes moving and poignant but always dramatic. the personalities really come to life.

the games are also a joy to play over and i like the notes which are literary gems in themselves. if you liked tartakower and dumonts 500 master games of chess you wil also want to read this book.

Haun's Hollywood History is a Hit!
This most impressive volume of movie facts, anecdotes, trivia, and gossip will keep film lovers enthralled for hours. Mr. Haun knows movies inside out and he shares his vast knowledge of film history in the format of a year long day to day diary. Wonderful pictures of the stars illustrate the work. Did you know that Bette Davis kept Vivien Leigh From being cast in "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte" because she was still mad at her 26 years later for beating her out to be Scarlett O'Hara? You will know all sorts of fun facts when you read Haun's amazing book! A movie lover's dream come true!

Affair of the Heart
I love to go to the movies. Frankly who does't, and even though one thinks that there are many books out there that talk about the movies, but this book gives the reader a lot more. Each page is filled with tid bits and gossip, and dates with information that you normally would not find somewhere in a book. I recommend this book for the people who truely are movie buffs and love to see what happened on a day at the movies.
