This is a great book for Database Programmers
Not only does this book go into great detail about how the whole Jet Database Engine works, it describes the whole structure of the Workspaces Data Access Object Model. The information in this book has helped me countless times when I've needed to get information about tables, queries, recordsets, fields to show to users. I was even able to create my own report wizard in VB, and it works just like the one in Access! This book will teach you TONS about the way the Jet Database engine works, and works great as a reference. If more programmers knew the information contained in this book, there wouldn't be as much confusion going on.

Big Red Apple doesn't fall far from the tree
Delightful glimpse into Rose's life away from home and adds another layer of complexity to the bossy sister-struggling teacher-go to it gal in the form of Eliza Jane. I don't doubt for a minute most of this volume is true to word, especially the emergence of Rose's feminist/socialist values.

Fun for kids, equally interesting to this adult.

Charming Story
This book is excelent. Its a great addition to the Rose years. I think this story is quite interesting and it shows how difficult growing up is , no matter what time in history! Its a book girls can relate to and its also very pleasant to read.

An excelent book
On the Banks of the Bayou is a wonderful story of Laura Ingalls Wilder's daughter, Rose, who leaves her home in the Ozarks to finish high school in Louisiana. She stays with her Aunnt Eliza Jane. The city is full of excitment, and Rose discovers she is an independent women with stong hoppes and dreams.

Algorithms on Strings, Trees, and Sequences: Computer Science and Computational Biology

A very nicely written book
This is THE book on string algorithms; covers all the normal exact match algs (Z, BM, KMP) and then goes on to discuss suffix trees in great depth (but with great clarity!). The second half of the book deals with inexact matching mostly using dynamic-programming-based algs. Some of the stuff generalizes nicely to non-string DP algs as well. Worth the investment just for increasing "algorithmic maturity", not to mention Gusfield's gift for clear exposition makes it a pleasant read.

Definitive String Algorithms Text
If you like definition-theorem-proof-example and exercise books, Gusfield's book is the definitive text for string algorithms. The algorithms are abstracted from their biological applications, and the book would make sense without reading a single page of the biological motivations. Gusfield aims his book at readers who are fluent in basic algorithms and data structures (at the level of Cormen, Leisersohn and Rivest's excellent text). The exercises are wonderfully illustrative, being neither trivial nor impossible.

All of the major exact string algorithms are covered, including Knuth-Morris-Pratt, Boyer-Moore, Aho-Corasick and the focus of the book, suffix trees for the much harder probem of finding all repeated substrings of a given string in linear time. In addition to exact string matching, there are extensive discussions of inexact matching. Even the discussions of widely known topics like dynamic programming for edit distance are insightful; for instance, we find how to easily cut space requirements from quadratic to linear. There is also a short chapter on semi-numerical matching methods, which are also of use in information retrieval applications. Inexact matching is extended to the threshold all-against-all problem, which finds all substrings of a string that match up to a given edit distance threshold. The theoretical development concludes with the much more difficult problem of aligning multiple sequences with ultrametric trees, with applications to phylogenetic alignment for evolutionary trees (an approach that has also been applied to the evolution of natural languages).

Note that there is no discussion of statistical string matching. For that, Durbin, Eddy, Krogh and Mitchison's "Biological Sequence Analysis: Probabilistic Models of Proteins and Nucleic Acides" is a good choice, or for those more interested in language than biology, Manning and Schuetze's "Statistical Natural Language Processing". There is also no information on more structured string matching models such as context-free grammars, as are commonly used to analyze RNA folding or natural language syntax. Luckily, Durbin et al. and Manning and Schuetze also provide excellent coverage of these higher-order models in their books.

This book is not about efficient implementation. If you need to build these algorithms, you'll also need to know how to write efficient code and tune it for your needs. This is an algorithms book, pure and simple.

As a computer scientist, I found the discussions of computational biology to be more enlightening than in other textbooks on similar topics such as Durbin et al., because Gusfield does not assume the reader has any background in cellular biology. Instead, he provides his own clear and gentle introductions illustrated with algorithms, applications, open problems and extensive references. Like most Cambridge University Press books, this one is beautifully typeset and edited.

All about suffix trees
Excellent book on String Algorithms. A lot of material. This is not an easy read, though, relatively not difficult for an algorithms and data-structures book.

This is the most complete resource i could find about suffix trees, how to implement them, usages, and algorithms. Actually, when I took this book, I was interested in suffix arrays. Well - this book explains those better than the original paper do.

Many applications to suffix trees are listed, along with comparisons to other algorithms applied to those problems.

If you need to get into string algorithms from computer science perspective - this is a good book to start. If you want to "feel" of the biologists side of the story, than this is not a good choice.

I use this book as a textbook on the subject, and I'm sure I'll be using it as a reference later on.

This book surely is worth its cost (even if you buy it on Amazon...:-)).

What's it all about?
I think Dan Piraro is one of the few people who have a handle on what life is all about. His cartoons show an insight into our world that precious few have. This latest of his books exceeds what I expected. The comments on his thinking are an added plus that put him over the top.
I don't know how his next book can be any better, but I'm sure it will be. Why am I sure? because I saw his Bizzaro Bologna Show when it came through town, and he was even funnier than I thought was possible.
I really feel sorry for the people in the towns that don't have him in their daily newspaper!!!

Dan Piraro is a comic genius!
I've been a fan of Mr. Piraro's work for several years, and almost creamed myself when I heard he was coming out with a collection of his greatest Sunday cartoons!! "Life is Strange and So Are You" lived up to my utmost expectations, keeping me in hysterics for hours on end. My husband threatened to call poison control because he thought I must've accidentally eaten hallucinogenic mushrooms on my pizza, I was laughing so hard-but I assured him through my tears of hilarity that it was all Dan Piraro-who's just too freakin' funny!

I love his drawing style, the vibrant colors he uses, the secret symbols he sneaks in the art, and his outlandish sense of humor illustrated in every gag. The personal notes included with each cartoon give new and much-appreciated insight , sharing the author's comments and inspiration on each panel.

BUY THIS BOOK, IT WILL CRACK YOU UP!!

P.S. Thank you, Mr. Piraro, for giving of yourself, and for gracing the world with a heaping dose of laughter--exactly what we need!

Life Is Strange and So Are You
Bizarro is by far one of the best cartoons in print today. He is clever, extremely funny and obviously he is a good artist. This book is cleverly done with all the little extra comments on each cartoon. They give a small insite into the mind of this cartoonist. It is truly a Sunday Treasury.

Amazing prose from a Laura and Rose point of view
Special thanks to Roger Lea McBride and family for the "trip" to DeSmet and giving us Laura's voice once more, even though it was heartbreaking for all involved. Equally impressive was Rose's saga while living in town. The girl was quite a firecracker. Again, just as charming as Little House, but the storytelling is a bit more complex and more reflective of who Rose was. This series truly equals the charm and storytelling of Laura's story. Kudos to those who thought to bring this series to print.

A Time for New Beginnings...
Rose and her family are still living in the little town of Mansfield. There, they are doing the best they can to get back on their feet and return to Rocky Ridge Farm. It's a big year for Rose and filled with many changes. For example, she witnesses the dawn of a new era as she celebrates the turn of the new century. Besides all the hard work, there's still love in the air for Rose! "New Dawn on Rocky Ridge continues the story that Laura Ingalls Wilder told of her own childhood, a story that has charmed generations of readers, including me."

The Best!
I own and have read every single Rose Years books and out of all of them this was my favorite! It's about a young girl who is full of dreams and ambitions. I think it's the best book and that everybody dhould be able to read it!

Great Book
If you're thinking of traveling to Europe to catch any games, you must get this book. Not only will it help get about town to the match but inspire you to go catch a match, even if it's a lower division club like FC Paris. :)

Excellent Primer to European Football
Covers every major club in every European city. Trophies, players, great moments all covered in very readable style. Excellent tips on transportation, lodging and dining. Perhaps the most interesting section is the "Ultra Culture", detailing the hooligan aspects of the respective teams and cities. In other words, where not to go. Fantastic reading. Can't wait for the next edition

A fantastic introduction to the world of European football
I was interested in trying to bone up on my soccer so I could converse intelligently with my relatives in Italy, and this book fit the bill perfectly. Written most directly for use by English-speaking fans who might actually travel to see the powerhouse teams covered, the book is still a fantastic primer on the history of the clubs, and the current gossip as of time of publication (1998.) If you're new to soccer and looking for a little insight into the world of Europe's beautiful game, or just want to read a comprehensive overview of the field that's not afraid to voice a strong opinion or two, this book will not disappoint.

Every Golfer Should Own This Book!
I am completely in awe of the power this book has to improve your golf game and make it FUN. You won't learn any mechanics here; but the combination of emotional, mental and course management is magic. It also happens to be simple - no "practice" time involved. Just think about what Dede (sadly, now deceased) and Dan propose. Read the first chapter this morning, play better and have more fun this afternoon. Really. I wish I could give this book to all my golfing friends who love the game.

Take Your Game To The Next Level
By applying the principles covered in this book you will take your golf game to the next level. Assuming you know how to execute various golf shots, playing smart golf means getting your mind into the game in a positive way to enable your abilities to shine through. Not only will you shoot lower your scores, but you will increase your enjoyment of the game. Brilliantly written in a clear, concise manner. Get this book, that is, unless you happen to be one of my match-play opponents!

A definite MUST READ for all golfers!
Before I even finished the first chapter I knew this technique was going to work. The first chapter alone is worth the cover price. I was able to apply the techniques immediately, take it to the course and the results just had me doing double-takes. It's that effective. In barely of month having half-read this book I've already taken 8 strokes off my avg game, setting or tying new personal bests each time out.

Before I read this book I was the typical golf course hot-head, maybe a little worse than typical. I would spend half the round fuming over one poor shot or another, which of course led to others, which in turn mad me even angrier. Before I knew it I would be out-scoring the Lakers. Those days are gone. People hardly recognize me now because the program laid out in this book gives you constructive, positive factors to think about. You just don't have the time or inclination to worry about one bad shot because you now have a much better idea of what is happening to you and how you can combat it. It's a wonderful book. It does for the mental game what Ben Hogan's 5 Lessons does for the swing.

American Terrorist: Timothy McVeigh & the Tragedy at Oklahoma City

No grand conspiracy, just one committed fanatic and friends
I just finished the book. Well written and thorough, Michel and Herbeck convinced me that one committed fanatic, and not even an
insane fanatic, Tim McVeigh, is responsible for the Murrah building bombing. He wasn't racist, wasn't a misanthrope, but his extreme hatred of the government (something LOTS of people share) drove him to an act of monstrous evil. As Michel and Herbeck note, this hatred of the government led McVeigh to kill innocents, exactly the kind of evil he laid at the doorstep of the government. Yet McVeigh never seems to have caught on to that.

You'll agree with his views, but not his actions.
I read this book, and it is an excellent study of McVeigh. However, let me point out that I read the hardcover version, which was published before Tim's execution. Still, Tim had many ups and downs of his life. I'm sure that many people, myself included, have some sort of disrespect for the government, and the authors present Tim's case remarkably presented. But instead of using letters to congressmen urging them to change the system, McVeigh decided to take human life to make his case. This shows how extreme hatred of the government can become if one's twisted mind believes that killing is the only way to be heard. Second, I kind of sympathize with some periods of McVeigh's life that I've pretty much led myself, such as isolation from the social world (except for, in McVeigh's case, gun enthisiasts). This is a must read and an alert that any crazy American can fight for rights by selfishly ending promising lives.

Compelling and important piece of literature
This book is one of the most compelling and riviting works I have ever read. It is complete, detailed, honest and it does justice to the bombing and to McVeigh. This book will explain to you exactly what happened, and most importantly, WHY it happened. It doesn't bog you down with conspiracy theories and bold statements designed to impress you. It is impressive in and within itself. I casually started reading the beginning of it just a week ago, not intending to dive into it just yet. But I couldn't put it down. The authors are so detailed and complete that it's sometimes difficult to get over all the cold facts and many names they report, but it paints a good picture. I would have preferred that they included even more of McVeigh's own thoughts and opinions in the text. They left out a few minor details that I was interested in like... what ever happened to his older sister? And to his high school girlfriend? They included enough to cause me to feel as if I knew him, however. You'll walk away better informed with a clearer mind and understanding of government, the military, and crime. It is scary, but it is worth it. Everyone ought to read this book.

A decent tutorial
As an avid and successful Video Poker player, and author of "Mastering Video Poker - a professional player's secrets revealed", I always like to take a look at the current state of video poker strategy guides. This book will teach you the basic whys and why nots of various plays. Lacking is any attention to the more advanced psychological aspects of training and playing, as well as how to truly take the casinos for all their worth in player perks, treatment, bonuses and general high-roller benefits.

Useful if you want to play video poker.
I purchased this book because I saw a TV show that said "Video poker can be beat". I found this hard to believe but it is apparently true on some machines with perfect play. Ah, there is the rub. Along with the book I bought a computer program that teaches you how to play and shows you each error you make. It isn't real hard to learn how to play perfectly but requires a person that can really keep focused for hours on end. Most folks with the intellect to learn this could make much more money doing something (anything ?) else but if you have to gamble this is your best shot. This book with Frugal Gambler and some real effort will make your Vegas trips more fun. I don't think Vegas casinos enjoy losing so I wonder how long this will last ?

Excellent book for all level of players
Great coverage of probability and numbers behind the game.
Easy to follow rules that are much shorter than anything out there with very very very little dropoff in expected return. I highly recommend this book.
