Reassuring and helpful
If you are a college student majoring in television production, you know that internships are the only key to getting a career in the field. This book will be a vital asset to anyone fighting to secure an internship in the field of broadcasting.

While many of the suggestions on actions one should take and how one should behave were things I found to be common sense, it was reassuring to read them being suggested in this book, not only by the authors but by the countless TV professionals that they quoted throughout the book.

There were also several suggestions made that I wouldn't have thought of. I'm so glad that I read this book before I began my search for an internship. Now that I am in the middle of working as an intern for a local PBS station, I continue to find the book's suggestions helpful. I consult it every once in a while for new ideas.

No student, of any major, should be without this book.
The title of this book may mislead perspective readers. It is a how to book for any intern, not just those trying to break into television. There are over 100 media, pr, and advertising executives quoted in this book. However, the anecdotes and advice they offer should help secure an internship and probably a job in any field. This is the bible for prospective interns and no student should be without one.

Useful and easy to read!!!
This book is a useful source for everyone in need of advice regarding interning in the media industry. From day one of looking for your dream internship Breaking Into Television holds your hand. This book guides you from the interview to your first day, and then into making your internship into a potential career. After reading this book you feel motivated and informed to become a "super intern".

A Must Have for Any Sales Professional
As I read Beyond Selling Value, I was completely consumed by the content. Our company has faced all the typical challenges - "product and priced focused", "a perceived commodity", and "just like our competition". The IMPAX sales process is exactly what we've been looking for! My thanks to the authors for spending the time to talk tactics instead of theories - information that can be used immediately! Our sales teams will only get stronger with these new strategies.

Great Process and A Great Book!!
I love the IMPAX process! I was first introduced to it a year ago. Since then I have used it to make over a dozen sales presentations, with fantastic results.

I was excited when I heard that Shonka and Kosch were writing a book as I was looking forward to a refresher and a chance to get a deeper understanding of the IMPAX process.

The book exceeded my expectations. There were new stories, additional insights into the philosophy and practice of the IMPAX sales process. A plus were the examples and checklists designed to kick start the readers thinking. I found it an easy read, the chapters are short, focused and kept my attention.

Beyond Selling Value has all the details stories and logical flow that will make it easy for someone new to the IMPAX process to very quickly begin using it to improve their sales. It also makes a great refresher for people who have seen IMPAX before. I thoroughly recommend it.

Beyond Selling Value
I have just finished reading Beyond Selling Value and I loved it. It is the first book on selling that I have read that really got beyond the high level strategies and brought it down to the "how-to's". I really appreciate the sound logical thinking and the easy to follow tactics. I also appreciate the interesting anecdotes from their customers real-life experiences in applying the IMPAX Sales Process.
This is a process that will work. I encourage you to read it and to start winning more business today!

Dan Hurley Does Planet Earth
Dan Hurley Does Planet Earth . . . Oh wait. That's his NEXT book. I found The 60-Second Novelist to be very real, and easy to relate to. Dan's gentle psychological approach to people brims with humor, yet gets to the point. It is good storytelling, yet a unique take on very real people and situations. The spontaneity factor makes it all the better. And though I am partial to Dan's Evil Twisted Twin and his absurdist humor, I do enjoy Dan's warm and fuzzy side. I found the biographical element of the book to be especially fascinating.Dan followed his dream of being a writer, and set up his Remington on a Chicago street, eventually creating a wonderful success story. 'Just DO it!' his behavior seems to encourage us. It is difficult for me to choose a favorite story from The 60 Second Novelist. I especially enjoyed the romantic stories (Donna's Dream Lover, Walk Along The Ocean)and the absurdist (I Like Eyes, The Reclamation, Fly By Night Monkeys). In the book design, I really liked the copies of Dan's original stories, typos and corrections included, peppered throughout. But two questions remain. Who will play Dan in The Dan Hurley bio-pic? I suggest that we take a poll. And when is his next book coming out?!

Inspiring in a sneaky & humorous way
I'll be honest: I gave this book 5 stars not for its deathless prose or vast literary quality, but because it does exactly and charmingly what it sets out to do. Author Hurley shares many dozens of very short tales he wrote on the spot in only a minute for people who were waiting right in front of him. Talk about pressure! But Hurley proves that writer's block can be conquered, sometimes, by giving yourself a deadline. And he does a lovely job of capturing some essence, some droll humor, some cosmic message in each of these vignettes. I'd say he was able to force himself into a state of flow and let the words come without having the time to think about them too much. He seems to have a way of connecting with people quickly and he certainly has the ability of turning that connection into something quirky, fun, and surprisingly enjoyable to read. The next time you say you don't have time to write, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Dan Hurley's story is as delightful as the ones he writes.
It took amazing self-motivation and determination for Dan Hurley to keep writing his 60 second novels, and his belief in himself is inspiring. This book is a delightful vision of the evolution of the 60 Second Novelist, and a portrait of a cross-section of America. The book is heartwarming and upliting, and full of amusing photographs and anecdotes, and I highly recommend it.

Thanks, Dan Hurley, for reminding me how wonderful it is to believe in yourself.

Purely Funny Stuff
In Outtakes, Dan Patrick puts his candidly dry sense of humor to good use. He carefully intertwines this dry wit with his incredibly vast knowledge of sports and the athletes who play them in this book of interviews.

In interview after interview with the sports' legends of our time, Patrick asks the questions everyone else is afraid to ask, as well as the questions you can't believe he had the nerve to ask. The word association sections are simply hilarious. Just ask hockey superstar, Eric Lindros, or maybe the Hanson Brothers. (You will have to read the book to get that one)

This book is a nice, easy read, as well as being extremely entertaining. You should finish it rather quickly. Dan Patrick has an intuitive mind for sports' reporting, so pick up this book and enjoy it firsthand.

If you love the ESPN Magazine column, you'll love this book.
As soon as I saw the ad in ESPN the Magazine for this book I had to get it. I enjoy Dan Patrick's "Outtakes" every week and always wished there was more than just one page. Well, I got my wish.

The book is formatted just like the weekly column, with offbeat questions for your favorite athletes. The only thing I might change about this book is the fact that there is only one woman athlete interview. Although, I don't watch too many woman's sports, I would love to hear their perspective on things.

"Outtakes" is a must for the sports fan that's looking for something a little different. I'm already looking forward to "Outtakes II"!

Simply En Fuego
Dan Patrick exemplifies outstanding sports reporting. In Outtakes, he engages his dry sense of humor and mixes it together with his extraordinary knowledge of the sports world. Outtakes is a candid collection of interviews with sports' celebrities of past and present. He is not afraid to ask the questions that everyone truly wants to ask, and the word associations are outright hysterical. Patrick is one of the wittiest people on the face of the earth. Outtakes just shines with this. The book is an easy read, and has a good, steady flow to it. It is one entertaining ride into the insightful mind of Dan Patrick, sports' guru. Just hold on, because the laughs come hard and fast.

Fortune Favors the Bold: A British Lrrp With the 101st

A real story, by a real man, telling it like it really was.
Do you think that life in Lurps was all guts and gore and glory?

If so, you're wrong. If you're looking for a book about these things, look elsewhere. If you want to know what Lurping was REALLY like, read this book. It tells it like it was, warts and all. As you read it, you'll meet a gamut of emotions. You'll laugh, and you'll cry; you'll be angry and you'll be frustrated.

Just like Limey Walker and the men who made up the famous recon unit of the 1st Brigade/101st Airborne Division in Vietnam: LRRP--Long Range Reconaissance Patrol, The Foul Dudes, The Eyes of the Eagle.

This is the story of the life of an unusual man, one who was a hero, but not the Audey Murphy type.

The Limey was born in Britain and spent the first two decades of his life looking for something truly meaningful. His search took him 3 continents to come to an end. He found what he was looking for when he wound up in Lurps, in Vietnam, the only subject of Her Majesty, the Queen of England, to serve with the Foul Dudes.

FORTUNE FAVORS THE BOLD is the story of his search, and the record of what he found at its end. It tells how he grew from a child into a man, and then grew as a man. It tells of his mistakes and the trouble he got into along the way. It tells of the remarkable men he served with, in great honor.

It's a Lurp's-eye view of one phase of the War in Vietnam, in the rear, and on the line as a member of a 6 man recon team creepy-crawling in Mr. Charles' backyard.

It's the story of a common man who joined with others like himself, and together created created an uncommon legend of uncommon courage, valor and gallantry that was acknowledged even by the enemy, who feared them more than a B52 raid.

This made them--and him--a shining part of the history of a war without luster.

Read it, and learn what Lurps was really like. And learn what the Limey was really like at the same time--a very brave man with a big heart, who epitomized a "Band of Brothers" who never let their friends down, nor failed to do their duty.

If LRRP history interests you--read FORTUNE FAVORS THE BOLD. If courage interests you--read it. If men who put honor first interest you--read it. If you just want a good read--read it.

The Limey's book has them all, and is worth the effort. It's plain and unvarnished truth, told by a heck of a soldier, and told very well indeed.

It's a keeper.

A book that affected another Limey - a masterpiece
James W Walker presents you with the story of his time in Vietnam and allows you to be transported there as if you were watching yourself.

He starts the story by describing how he managed to get to the States - via Hull, UK and through various schools in the area before moving with his mother to the USA, volunteering for the Army and shipping out to Vietnam.

Walker's description of his time in Nam is written so clearly that he betrays the fact that so many years have passed between the Tour and the book. His writing is not in the style of a list - like so many other books in this genre - but of a well-structured novel by a clearly talented author.

Fortune Favours the Bold - Walker was certainly bold. A number of tales in this book must have taken sheer courage to undertake. But Walker does not flaunt this - there is no ostentatious hint that he was the best, nor did he even think he was anything other than an average young man.

The book has, as all Nam books do, a fistful of photos taken of the author and his friends. The dipped head of Walker in one of the photos underlines my earlier statement - Walker is a real person. One with whom you can associate and befriend.

Being British myself it could be understood that out of the endless Vietnam books I have read this one would stay in my mind more than others, but Walker has a style that allows you to become him, to understand him and to like him. I would recommend anyone to read this book, regardless whether they are interested in Vietnam, war, fear and courage or not because it is a good read that will transport you from noon to night as you glide through the book, living your own war. I think you should buy this book - you will read it, love it and recommend it to your friends.

Mr Walker, Sir, when will you bless us with another book?

An outstanding story that you will never forget!
Limey's account as a 101st Airborne LRRP in Vietnam will keep you riveted to your seat and you immediatly feel yourself being transported to the action! Fortune Favors the Bold is extraordinary. Step into the lives of tough, rugged, professionals who performed their jobs well and with pride, under extremely difficult conditions. One you start this book, be prepared - you can't put it down!

Likely the most important book written on Internal Arts.
This book won't teach you any fancy forms, but it will teach you everything you really need to know about Pa Kua (and any other internal martial art, for that matter).

This is a book of the true fundamentals of Pa Kua. Each lesson is there to teach you to progress as smoothly and efficiently as is about humanly possible. Park really stresses the necesity of basic drills, practiced properly, to allow the body to learn to 'relax' enough for efficient martial use. Exercises begin with footwork drills, progress to combined footwork drills, and then to basic palm techniques. Later both the combined footwork and palm techniques are combined.

Also taught in this book is basic Pa Kua Chi Kung, enough for the beginner to develope a feel for Chi flow and are sufficient exercises for Chi development until the practice of one's martial techniques take over one's Chi work.

There is a Volume 2, but it doesn't seem to be listed here at Amazon.com as of this review. This is as good as Volume 1, but isn't needed until you've absorbed everything from Vol.1 (good luck!)

Again, if I had to own only one book on internal martial arts I would most certainly make it this one. No art is ever any better than its basics. So, the more strongly developed your basics, the more developed your skill will be. I feel this is the best book from which to learn those basics.

You MUST have this if you are familiar with BaGua!!
I purchased vol. 1 and 2. This book was extremely well written and articulate. It clearly sums up Chinese philosophy, (an inherently formidable task), and applies it directly to the martial art form. It's one thing to read history or didactic technicalities, but the authors ability to concisely present the philosophy in a fashion that is directly applicable was nothing short of heroic!

This book is an absolute must for practitioners and teachers of the Chinese martial art of bagwa or Pa Kua Chang. It will crystallize the meaning and substance of movements for students - For teachers it will help forge much better instructors.

If you have never practiced bagwa, (Pa Kua, BaGua or Bagwachang, etc.), I would suggest you go elsewhere to learn about this unique system of martial art.

If anyone has a question about it, feel free to drop me an email!

Secrets not many chinese practitioners know
I am a practitioner of I-Chuan and Pa-Kua in Hong Kong. I have bought almost every chinese Pa-Kua books published in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China. This book had been recommended to me many times by my friends, but I was still reluctant to buy it, thinking that not much more could be learned, not to mention my more than ten years efforts in finding and seeing many of the well-known masters both in Hong Kong and China. One very important thing I've learned over these years is that the esoteric teachings of internal martial arts had been developed most of the time by teachers who did not have the real skills but wanted to cheat for more students. I was amazed at how earthly and scientific this book has finally explained the real mechanics for the tremendous striking power of internal martial arts, it tells you which muscles to use instead of the apparent movements of the body. This book teaches in the same way and language of every real masters I've met - no hype, no lengthy discussion at qi(though I do not deny the role of qi in internal martial arts)which could not been verified anyhow, but every instruction is consistent with morden physics and human biology. I'm very happy at the fact that this book is not written by a chinese, which symbolizes the art of Pa Kua has truly been taught and spread to other parts of the world.

As a science teacher use book to teach simple machines.
Teaching in a specialized school with a vast amount of equipment I was pleased to find a Lego book that will probably last a lot longer than the Lego Technic cards which are easily lost or misplaced. Having written the third grade science curricula for our city I can see that this activity book would satisfy the beginning objectives taught for the simple machines unit. I like the inventory page with labeled photographs of each piece. It is important to teach the students the names of each LEGO piece so that there is a commonality of terms when designating which piece to use in the construction of each "contraption". The pictures are clear. The assembly of the projects is easy for students to follow. The projects are interest-grabbing to a child.

Perfect for whole family
Not very big book, but you can have a lot of fun with it. You get not only the book, but also few lego items to build it. Some of them are easy to build, some are little difficult. In most of ideas you have to use another lego items - you have to have them at home.

My 6 yr old loved it and we had fun building together
Although the book says ages 9 -12, I bought it for my 6 year old and he loved it. It was recommended by a 1st grade teacher. We have worked together on building some of the contraptions and have had a lot of fun. He could easily follow the picture instructions, but needed help on the words. Much better than buying the kits and building what the picture shows. This "book" comes with pieces you usually find in the Technic sets or have to special order through the Lego catalog. Also combines Legos with things you have around the house - string, balloons, etc. - to build all sorts of things. I really like the fact that it isn't just step by step how to build something but also gives ideas on how you can put a new twist on what you have built and asks you to expand upon it.

This book is incredible!
I am a Middle School art teacher. We used the techniques in this book for an 8th grade art class every semester! This past semester, we built a room size sculpture installation using the cloth mache technique to create aliens. The aliens were having a dinner party! What a great reference book for the project! Anyone can use the instructions Dan Reeder provides to create a wonderful creature!

Tons of Fun
I am 36 years old and I came across this book when I was in college. I grabbed it up and immediately started in creating my own screamers, using the wonderful photos in the book for inspiration. In no time my apartment was crawling with weird creatures from my imagination. Soon I had too many and had to give them away to friends...they are totally unique gifts. The author of the book provides everything you need: complete supply lists, easy-to-follow step-by-step directions with photos, color images of finished screamers to help jump-start your own creativity, plus there is the added bonus of the writer's tounge-in-cheek writing. Making screamers would be fun for anyone at any age. Buy this book and let out you inner monster!

Fansastic
I am a high school art teacher in St. Louis, from time to time I get a student who wants to do an independent project in 3-D. The simple screamer takes about one semester to complete. The directions are easy to follow and perfectly sequenced. The results are always superb. I highly recommend this book

Wish I'd had this 2 years ago
Thank God for Vickie Gerard and this wonderful book. I was diaognosed 21/2 years ago with Lymphoma, Hodgkins Disease. I went through the first 6 treatments and was told I was "clean". Two months later it was back and I was given less than a 4% chance to survive IF I could get through the chemo before I had the bone marrow transplant!!

Yes Vickie talks a great deal about CANCER TREATMENT CENTERS OF AMERICA, thats where she was treated, and I went there too. Needless to say 2 years later and I'm still here, and cancer free.

I can relate to most of everything she says in the book and if my caregivers had had this knowledge when I was so sick, we all could have saved a lot of tears and known what to do with some of the feelings that go along with the patient and those close to the patient.

I recommend this book for all who know of/or are the one with cancer. It can answer just about every question one can think of and then some. Thank You Vickie for writing this book, and my God bless you now and always.

Cancer beating tips for patients and caregivers.
This is a wonderful collection of cancer beating tips, told by an author who has personally been to the brink with the disease, and achieved victory. Rather than a lengthy narrative, the ideas are organized in 'mind sized bites', which remind of H. Jackson Brown's books a few years ago.

The book is organized in an array of topics, relating to the various issues and emotions which cancer fighters experience. And throughout her experience, the author displays enormous good humor and tenacity.

This book can be a great help to anyone fighting cancer, or caring about someone who is.

Mandatory Reading
Best book I've read for dealing with cancer. I think all cancer patients should read it - wish I'd had it five years ago when I was taking treatments. All cancer centers should have a copy of this book in their library and/or should give a copy to each patient. The American Cancer Society should recommend this book. Can't begin to say enough good things about it.

Little Hamlet
The Land I Lost, by Huynh Quang Nhuong.(Reviewed by a 7 year old girl) This is a well written book, but still not my favorite book in the world. These stories from the author's childhood memories are fun, funny and sometimes heartbreaking. The book takes place in a small hamlet in Vietnam before the war. The author remembers adventures with the villagers and with various animals, particularly a special water buffalo named Tank. The several pictures in the book help to bring out the story. There is a great scene where the author and his sister catch some little birds. I won't tell you any more. Oh, if you are not comfortable with the death of animals and some villagers from snake bites and wild boar attacks, then I wouldn't recommend this book. All in all it's a pretty good book.

People and animals in rural Vietnam
"The Land I Lost: Adventures of a Boy in Vietnam" is written by Huynh Quang Nhuong, and includes illustrations by Vo-Dinh Mai. A short author bio at the end of the book notes that Huynh was born in Vietnam and eventually moved to the United States. This book is a wonderful account of growing up in rural Vietnam.

Huynh describes his life in a village on a riverbank, with a jungle and mountains nearby. The book is divided up into several short vignettes that describe the lives of the people and animals of this world. Although the danger and violence of some sections may be upsetting to some readers, I get the sense that the author is trying to present a truthful portrait of rural life.

There are accounts of many interesting people, such as Huynh's opera loving, karate fighting grandmother. But I was particularly fascinated by the many accounts of the domestic and wild animals of Huynh's homeland. I loved the descriptions of animal behavior and the accounts of the interactions between animals and people, between animals of the same species, and between animals of different species. We meet monkeys, otters, a fearsome crocodile, and many other creatures. It's a rich tapestry of life that is described vividly by the author. One of the most memorable animal characters is Huynh's water buffalo, Tank, a creature of great strength, loyalty, and courage.

This is a wonderful book that is written in a very effective, straightforward style that is ultimately quite poignant. It's sort of like a Vietnamese response to Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved "Little House" books. I recommend "The Land I Lost" to readers of all ages.

The Land I Lost
The Land I Lost

By: Huynh Quang Nhuong

Review by: Mary Cheung

The Land I Lost was a very interesting story. It reflects on the authors' memory of his childhood in Vietnam. It was well written and each chapter seems to be a section or story in the authors' childhood. It really showed some of his thoughts and feelings towards many things. Some of the chapters in the book were quite exciting, such as the snake and wild boar hunts. The descriptions were quite vivid and the stories were beautifully told. I give this book, five stars.
