An Introduction to Partial Differential Equations (Texts in Applied Mathematics, 13)

The Best
This book is the best book on advanced partial differential equations i know. It is almost self contained. Every definition is motivated. Examples are given. Buy it and enjoy

A very good book to learn about partial differential eqn's.
I found what I was looking for in this book to know enough about this huge theory of Partial Differential Equations. Contents of each chapter is clearly developed and no essential point is missed. If you are someone who seriously wants to learn more and apply PDE theory in your research, this book is worth picking. Although the title alludes to an introductory book bearing a simple approach, this book is far more than an introduction, and I would say some little background in PDE's would help.

excellent
While not the 1st artist to take on the conceptions of light and its practical uses in art, now Flagstff, AZ. artist James Turrell has brought the perception of light in art to creative and fantastic new levels through his conceptions such as his famous "skyspaces" to "darkspaces," "blue rooms," etc. Many of his pieces offer low light level environments, some almost no light at all, still others brilliant hues of red and blue.

Like most artists, Turrell shies away from giving detailed explinations of his works so that each individual can surmise the piece for themselves. This is not necessarly the case in this work. Turrell wanted, (and did) to build a specific "skyscape" in order to view an eclipse that occurred in England. Like his other "skyscapes," Turrell took the environment and all of its factors, as well as very specific geometry, into account, so that he could construct the perfect medium through which to not just observe the eclipse, but to better magnify the light, or lack thereof, of the eclipse.

The book is a wonderful look at this process, complete with analysis and pictures of the eclipse, the "skyscape," etc. An added bonus is the cd by German composer Paul Schulze, who's approach to his music (a minimalist ambient style, normally) is a perfect match to Turrell's art.

Fans of Turrell, or those who are interested in the interplay between light, our senses, and the reality they both help us create, will find this rather short treatsie to be of invaluable use to them. A wonderfully intriguing work.

Outstanding play with light
James Turrell has long been a major player in the field of light art, and visitors to the Matress Factory museum in Pittsburgh are well aware of his outstanding way of playing with art and images. This amusing meditation on an eclipse is an excellent addition to his body of work

This tape set is fantastic!
I've listened to this set of tapes dozens of times, and get something new out of it every time. If you want "7 easy steps to being a man", these tapes are not for you. But if you've come to understand that the "male mode" occupies an indispensible mythic and practical place in our world, you've found compatriots and mentors in Bly, Hillman and Meade. Recorded live, and lovingly edited, these tapes are packed with content. I'm ordering another set because I'm wearing my current copy out!

A Must for Men who want more and Women who want find them!
I have had these tapes for 3 years now and have lent them to many men and women. When seeing that there was no review, I had to respond.

These 4 tapes (four hours) are a golden tapestry woven by three men who use combinations of ancient stories, poetry and psychology (stripped bare) to unmask the problems men face in todays relationships, work place and most of all, the talk of "what is desire". Poet Robert Blye (Iron John & Sibling Society), psychologist-author James Hillman and mythologist and story teller Michael Meade lead this 4 hour session interacting with 750 men.

The problems we face as men are great. With more than 50% of the homes in divorce, there is a hunger for the father and for mentors. Women don't want to be mothers to their men, they want men who can be responsible. Kids are killing each other and pressure is building on what is left of the family. Men have become soft, passive. Many have never been initiated, taken a mentor or have never gotten close to their elders. When the marriage comes under pressure, men and women run to their families and Lawyers, the men move out and and responsibility and outcome is decided by the court. The excerpt from Iron John that Blye recites about the work that the boy does "in the Walled Garden, where the lovers meet" meant so much more to me in this setting, combined with all the other material.

I loved James Hillman's translations of older cultures and language as well as his poking at the modern Therapy gurus. Blye, whose book Iron John lead me to these tapes, paints a very graphic view that our trouble, as men, has been evolving/growing long before the industrial revolution. Woodstock, Vietnam and now Clinton (who did not inhale) are just recent road signs on this journey. Michael Meade address and moves the throng with "Sooner murder an infant in it's cradle than nurse unattended desire" as well as his telling of "The Firebird" story. All three also recite many poems that are also included in "Rag and Bone Shop of the Heart" which is a compilation of all their favorite poems.

I have listened to these tapes many times and grown as a man as a result. As Michael Meade warns that "if you are seeking to understand desire you are courting trouble". The alternative is to go through life "just window shopping! You gotta buy something. Become part of the give and take". So try these tapes, men (and women) and find out that there is more.

favorite of grades Kinder-6th
all students in my school LOVE this book-I had to get a second copy as my own grandkids kept borrowing it! wonderful read-a-loud.

this is my favorite book
My name is Rachel. I am 6 years old. I love Moira's Birthday because it is so funny. The funniest part is when the entire school including kindergarten come rushing in the door to Moira's birthday party. The part when Moira orders 250 pizzas and cakes is hilarious. It makes me laugh. My whole family laughs. I also like other books by the same author.

Intelligent fun for kids of all ages
There are only a couple of books that completely intrigue my four month old son, and this is one of them. The pictures are fascinating to look at, bold and bright and witty. The accompanying poems are equally witty and enjoy a great variety of rhythm and style. We can go through the entire book without a single lapse of attention. I'm sure that when he's a little bit older, with a bit more comprehension on his side, my child will giggle and much as I do over these verses. A great introduction to the wonderful world of poetry, and a book that recognizes the intelligence of children - equally appealing to adults, as well.

Very different children's book
We got this for my son's birthday. Our friend (who was giving the present) was worried that we might find it a little to "dark" but she really liked it. We love it. It is perfect for little boys. Very different and wonderfully illustrated. A fun alternative way to learn ABC's

Wonderful front cover painting. Incisive documentary
A must-see cover design by Terence Kelleher. This one feature sets the book in a whole world of its own. I challenge anyone to read the contents, and not cry, and not consider their outlook changed.

Excellent insight into the world of Death Row
With a thought-provoking and attractive cover painting by Terence Kelleher, this book is the latest addition to a growing literature on the lives of the 2000 or so men and women awaiting execution in the United States. Composed almost entirely of accounts written by the men themselves, this makes a harrowing but life-affirming (ironically) read. It may well change the way you think.

Great Book
Most medical textbooks are organized by diagnosis. In real life, one is confronted with signs and symptoms and has to arrive at a diagnosis based on the synthesis and analysis of history, exam, labs, and imaging. That's why this excellent book is so practical--it's organized the way one really does pediatrics. Don't get me wrong--Nelson and such are valuable references, but this book is more helpful in coming up with a diagnosis when presented with a symptom.

Good book of differential diagnosis for pediatricians
Good medical books featuring a symptom rather than a disease based approach are rare. Those books using this approach covering pediatrics even more so. Practical Strategies in Pediatric Diagnosis and Therapy does a good job in helping the pediatric registrar (or house officer) circle in on a diagnosis based on symptoms such as shortness of breath, anaemia or fever of unknown origin. I enjoy this book a lot. I don't quite understand why the publisher makes it so hard to find copies of it.

Very well rounded and informative!
I teach a class for the University of California in their Web/IP Engineering program. I use this book as one of my texts because it's cross-platform and it has enough technical detail to really explain the complex art of optimizing a site. It's 1999 but the book is still relevant!

my web site has never ran faster
this book really helped me a lot with setting up my personal and company web sites. read this book, it will make your day!
