The Encyclicals of John Paul II
Published in Hardcover by Our Sunday Visitor (1996)
Authors: Michael J. Miller, Pat Burke, and Robert L. Hass
Amazon base price: $69.95
Average review score:

Soon to be John Paul the Great!!!
This giant of the 20th Century, will be known as John Paul the Great by future historians. Today, his teachings are considered "out of touch" with the modern world by the mouth pieces of worldly power, especially on sexual morality. He is considered worthy of derision by them, how wrong they are.

The thought of JPII is trans-modern, it is a bold and sophisticated philosophical approach to the problems that afflict our world. His insights penetrate into the philosphical and spiritual roots of the modern crisis and has found the solution. His approach is a rigorus engagement with modern thought and transcends the dead-end thought that has emerged among intellectual eliets and poisons our universities.

For those who would gloss over his writings, they would miss the mystical import and profound depth of this thinker and leader. So subtle, so rich, it is easily missed.

John Paul II is a prophet to the world, a prophet whose message has largely been ignored.

In the not too distant future, when our need for the TRUTH presses upon us ever more heavily, those who search will find John Paul's writings and be liberated and ennobled by this man's potent seed.

Take this and steep yourself in the truth and allow this man's spirit, the spirit of the Father, Child and Love to fill you.

What a book! What a Pope!
Here they are, in one collection. Why buy them individually when you can have them all in one place?

This important book provides a study of 12 of Pope John Paul II's encyclicals, from the first of his pontificate, Redemptor Hominis, through the much discussed Evangelium Vitae and Veritatis Splendor, the not-to-be-overlooked Redemptoris Mater, and Ut Unum Sint.

Scholars and non-scholars will be pouring over the Pope's gifts for the next century to come. The encyclicals offer Pope John Paul II's brilliant blueprint for the third millennium. It is a blueprint fashioned from Scripture itself, but with modern insights to carry us forward across the "threshold of hope."

J. Michael Miller, C.S.B. offers an excellent introduction to Papal encyclicals and helpful notes prior to each chapter. In addition, an exhaustive index makes this a superb reference for pastors, teachers, writers, theologians, researchers, and the average layperson desiring to know more about the Church.

Religiously, Intellectually, & geopolitically important
Father Miller has captured an entire set of the most significant written works of the Papacy of John Paul II. Clearly the present pope has been a religious and geopolitical figure of first importance in the past 22 years, as has been amply documented in such works as Weigel's 'Witness to Hope' and Bernstein's 'His Holiness.' The universal intellectual achievement however of JPII is understandable most readily in his encyclicals. These documents speak from and reveal a philosopher and theologian of the first quality; indeed, as with Leo XIII, it may take at least a hundred years for the importance of his work to be understood. Fr. Miller has the qualifications on all fronts, as a philosopher, a theologian, and his former employment in the Papal Secretariat of State, to gather and remark on these works. Students of the times and their deepest roots will doubtlessly find here a collection of primary source materials that are indispensible to their understanding.

The gift of "The Gift of Rivers"
This book really is a gift. Once you read former Poet Laureate Robert Hass's beautiful introduction, you won't want to stop -- and you won't be disappointed. We're talking range here -- from Isabel Allende's Amazon to Lorian Hemingway's Arkansas to William Least Heat-Moon's Mississippi ... and from icy mountain torrents like the En in Switzerland to cultural main streets like the Seine in France and the Nile in Egypt and the Ganges in India, to rivers choked by industry and neglect like the Columbia in the U.S. -- honestly, you'll laugh, you'll cry.

Thanks for the River Time
If all of the world's rivers formed a giant continuous watershed (which in a sense they do), I'd put-in at the top and proceed to ride, glide and meander my way down the arteries of our earth. As I entered into each unique river system - Congo, Amazon, Seine, Futaleufu, Siuslaw, Mississippi, Narmada - the human and natural histories of each river would be revealed to me, uncovered, discovered like the layers of time and tide of the Grand Canyon. At the take-out I'd be changed. I'd better understand John Calderazzo's observation that a river can "turn into a state of mind, a kind of feeling." That is the gift of rivers. Of course, there is no such thing as a put-in at the top of the world's watershed, but just as good is Pamela Michael's book, "The Gift of Rivers." Turn the page, enter into river time, hear the stories, and fall in love with our watery ancestors, the world's rivers.

grazie grazie
I feel fortunate to have had the chance to read the precious river stories contained in this collection. Some brought me and my friends to fits of laughter, others to tears and amazement- most of all they inspired us to listen more carefully to the rivers and waterways that bring nourishment and joy to all our lives.

Thank you Pamela Michael for sharing these stories from around the world with us!

About the book
Also known as Hellcatraz, journey through the now deserted corridors of the world famous penitentiary. Visit the cells which once held "America's Most Wanted". The pain, isolation, punishment, and resulting deaths appear to have been indelibly etched in the walls, cells, and corridors of this legendary prison --- Read the book and find out abot the ghosts of Alcatraz from an ex-warden's wife. Hollywood Songsters: Singers Who Act and Actors Who Sing: A Biographical Dictionary 2nd Edition, Three Volume Set

A Treasure Trove of Delight
Film historians James Robert Parish and Michael Pitts's "Hollywood Songsters" have outdone themselves with this handsomely designed three-volume set that is worth every penny. Filled with rare photos, "Hollywood Songsters" has comprehensive, accurate and fascinating entries on over 100 "singers who act and actors who sing." The lives and careers of everyone from A to Z or June Allyson to Mae West are covered in intriguing and fact-filled detail. Who would have thought that such an indespensible reference book could also be a page-turner. Once you start reading this treasure trove of information it is hard to put down because of the insider tidbits and behind-the-scenes facts that fill the well-written pages. As theater and film critic and lover of musicals, I find this a most wonderful addition to my library as well as a great read. The filmography and lp and CD bibliography on each singer is unparalled. Bravo to Mr. Parish and Mr. Pitts!!!

A totally indespensible three volume delight!
This is an informative and delightful set that has information on Hollywood songsters that can be found no where else. Each entry has a wonderful picture accompanying. I have spent many, many happy hours pouring over the entries and learning facts about my favorite stars. This is a must have for all libraries and any scholar of musical theatre or musical film or just popular music of the 20th century. Well worth the money! It is clear that Parrish and Pitts have done their homework, but even clearer that they have a love for the subject matter and it shows on every page. As a songwriter with a love for the field, I use this book constantly.

A LABOR OF LOVE THAT MUST BE ACKNOWLEDGED
This project has to be a mad labor of love on the part of the authors -- how else / who else would produce a 3-volume directory of singing in the movies? We must applaud and support the authors for this massive work -- I can't imagine it not being definitive -- by urging local libraries to carry it. A database like this should be available to everyone!

My Favortie Story is Thomas' Snowsuit
My favorite story is Thomas' Snowsuit by Robert N. Munsch. It is about Thomas and his mother and his teacher fighting. My favorite part is when Thomas is wearing the teachers dress. I also like when Thomas gets the teacher and the principal back into their clothes. This book is funny. You can't live without it! By Katie

A Grand Treasury Indeed!
This book was recommended to me for my children by a 1st grade teacher. I was reluctant to purchase it at first because of the price and because I had never read a book by Munsch. However, I decided to get it and, wow, are my kids happy. The book features many children's stories - most with silly goings on that keep my 7 and 4 year old boys in stitches. Every night for the last two months they ask to have one of the stories re-read to them. The outcome is always the same - laughter. This is an excellent work because it brings out the joy of reading for the kids. Definitely worth the money!

approximately 400 pages, beautiful illustrations, relevant and humorous stories. I enjoyed the book as much as my four year old daughter did.

succinct and very readable
I enjoyed this book because it was very readable with many illustrations covering many topics that discuss how to prevent heart disease. I especially liked the section devoted to nontraditional risk factors.

Concise summary of ways to prevent heart disease
This book is very easy to read and contains a lot of information about heart disease and how to prevent it. There are a great deal of pictures and figures. I found this book to be one of the best on the subject. As a dietitian, I found it helped me understand some of the reasons heart disease is so common in the world.

excellent summary, well illustrated and up to date
This book is the among the best written on heart disease prevention. It covers a wide range of topics including cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking and other less commonly accepted risk factors. It is very well illustrated and stocked with facts. Kudos to the authors !

Very Useful
This book is an outstanding reference for the primary care pediatrician in office practice. It is much better oriented to day-to-day pediatrics than Nelson's and its imitators. The CD-ROM is very useful and easy to navigate. As a bonus, the CD-ROM contains all of the excellent illustrations for Zitelli & Davis' superb Atlas of Pediatric Physical Diagnosis.

Programming Perl in the .NET Environment
Love Perl but wish it had the ability to work with the .NET framework? Well, this is the book for you! Let me tell you, if you program with Perl, then this book will earn its purchase price again and again. I've always loved the ease of programming in Perl, especially how well it works with sockets and network programming, but these days, you've got to be able to program Graphical User Interfaces. I've never been able to master programming GUI's using Tcl/Tk, but the C# like format of programming Visual Perl made creating Windows Forms a snap. The book gives so many examples of working with the .NET classes in any practical situation. Its got a great format including a discussion of programming with the .NET framework, a strong overview of programming in Perl, and of course the definitive guidelines to programming in PerlNET. It covers creating your own classes, components, forms, database interaction, and working with ASP.NET. It also gives an overview of working with the CPAN modules which is invaluable. The authors are intelligent, well-spoken, and are clearly experts in this particular area. You have GOT to buy this book!

Programming Perl in the .Net Environment
This book was not only extremely valuable to me in understanding how to use Perl in the .Net Environmental, but also contains the best presentation of how to build pure Perl Modules that I have read to date. These concepts really jelled for me after reading and utilizing the examples presented in the book.

With my limited experience in object oriented programming, this book presented the topics in the right order to overcome my lack of OO experience.

I did have a few instances of failing to find specific terms in the index.

This book will continue to be a valuable resource as I continue to refine my Perl skills in creating perl modules and utilizing Perl in the .Net environment.

Strange mix - comes up quite well
Can you mix Perl and Dot.NET ??
I didn't think so till now.

I found the mix of Perl and Dot.NET quite strange - that's why I was surprise to see a book on that matter.

I felt very curious to see how can it work together.

Perl has lots of advantages that make it such an enormous success - very easy to write fast and efficient code.
Ask any unix admin / programmer.

The way Perl works with the rich options of Microsoft's new engine is good. I like the combination. It works well, the examples are quite good.

The first part of the book looks similar to every Dot.NET one can find, but the second part is the value for this book - and that's why I liked it.

Good techinal explainations and examples.
It was a good investment for me.

My Three Years Working for Michael Jackson Dec 1990-Dec 1993

Save Your Money -- Very Skimpy
This "book" is a waste of money. I put the word "book" in quotes because in fact this little tract is less than 10,000 words. That's only about one-tenth the length of an average book. Furthermore, the "author" (also in quotes) has terrible spelling and grammar. Although it appears that Wegner did work for Michael Jackson, it seems Wegner barely met him. Wegner has hardly any information about Jackson. He "reveals" that boys would sometimes sleep in Jackson's room (which Jackson himself has said many times) and that Jackson would sometimes hug boys or sit close to them on a golf cart, both of which Jackson himself has shown in his recent "Home Movies" special. I'm sorry I wasted my money on this!

Great Book on Michael Jackson
All Michael Jackson fans must read this book. Very informative!

Juicy information on Michael Jackson
Great information on Michael Jackson. If you are a Jackson fan, then you definitely need to read this book. You will know much more about Michael Jackson now if you read this book. I am so glad that I read the book.
