A Convulsive-Beauty Masterpiece
Andre Breton's Mad Love is truly a work of art.Written in a surrealist manner it celebrates love and lovers. It finds beauty in such ordinary things such as iron masks, spoons, and trees. Never has there been another book that promotes romanticism such as this. Bravo Breton! You have made me proud to be a person in a monogomous relationship. It is a true celebration of the heart and of the soul.

A journey through Mali...
The self entitled photographic exploration presented by Malick Sadibe is a brilliant book. The book begins with a humble, yet elegant invitation (in French) to a party. Neatly juxtaposed with the invite, are several images of the partygoers captured in various moments of laughter and merriment by Msr. Sadibe.

The book continues on with various images of life in Mali in the early 1960s and 1970s. Sadibe's superb use of mimimal lighting and candid photos, combined with Magnin's minimal layout provide the reader with a glimpse into the lives of everyday African people. As the journey progresses you can almost feel the gentle, warm sunrays or the sound of 'Soul Makossa' slowly whispering in the late evening breeze.

This book is poignant and gentle, a true testimony to the greatness of African photographers such as Msr. Sadibe and Msr. Keita.

Stories of memories, experiences, and future hopes
The Man Who Beat The Man is an outstanding anthology of F.B. Andre's short stories and aptly demonstrates the scope and acuity of his literary talents. These are stories of memories, experiences, and future hopes reverberating through a diasporic cast of characters and brought vividly to life within the mind's eye of the reader. These very highly recommended and entertaining short stories include: The Upsetter; Wrestling From Chicago; Jump Up and Kiss You; Each One Teach One; Bienvenue au Canada; Jes Grew; Another World; Thunderin'; Mr. Lu's Garden; and the title piece, The Man Who Beat The Man.

The shattering novel of a shattered world
It seems to me that the Spanish Civil War is a period that is lost for most of us today. Very few of us lived through it and overshadowed as it was by other events soon afterwards, the passions it aroused, though virulent and enduring in both art and literature, have become dimmed over time. I imagine that in the generation under thirty-five today, those who have the vaguest notion of what took place then, would hardly form a legion. Of course, it is better known that a number of major figures from the literary and artistic world of the twenties went to fight (some on either side) in Spain. It is also probably well known that the Germans, Russians and Italians all sent troops or technical specialists to sharpen their own wares for the conflict to which this one proved but a prelude. Yet the extraordinary passions that were aroused in Spain and that reached out and infected so many of the foreign volunteers, have to be experienced by individuals and perhaps the best way I know of coming close to the tremulous heart of that ugly story is through Malraux. The book has been written as fiction by a master storyteller. The action, all of which is real and much of which was witnessed at first hand, is simply gripping. The tears it should properly evoke will also, I have no doubt, be real ones. In a way, Malraux, who also wrote a similar and equally fine book about revolution in China, is offering us a lament for all that died in those years, for crushed spirits and youth spent as fodder for cannons. It is a magnificent human story; regrettably it is one of tragedy. But if we are to remember the Holocaust of the Nazis, why should we forget the deadly internecine warfare of Spain? Indeed, how could we.

This review concerns the translation by Stuart Gilbert and Alastair Macdonald, which was excellent. Once again, there are so many books in the world, I know, but this one should not be out of print.

Mon Amour indeed--Norma Jeane, that is!
One of the first books I got that turned me on to Marilyn was Andre De Dienes' Marilyn Mon Amour, and as such, is the best book I've ever bought on her.

The photos are in black-and-white, which adds to the charm. de Dienes' work proves that the world didn't need colour photos to show that warm, blossoming, peach-like skin to its full effect. No, b-and-w was good enough to bring out that inner beauty.

This book more than any other convinced me that Norma Jeane was prettier than Marilyn. Oh yes, I was enthralled by the golden goddess who took the world by storm beginning in 1953, but it's that pretty brunette who charms me more. The shots at the beach, where she's wearing the sweater and playing with the volleyball, are my favorites. The shots of her in the Death Valley also exemplify her prettier self. And she does look sweet and girlish in pigtails, during her first photo shoot.

Of the blonde shots, it'd probably have to be the 1949 beach shots. Her hair was long then, and she looks like she's really enjoying herself. And of any later stuff, the shot of her eating breakfast.

The last few photos mirror the despair she felt towards the end of her life. The frightened little girl, surrounded by darkness, is clearly seen.

I've heard the saying that the camera is a mirror to the soul. In the case of this photo collection, I am in full concurrence. However, the camera needs an operator, someone to focus that mirror, and Andre de Dienes was the right person for that focus.

Applied math for AI, new paradigms
This is one of the best books ever written in the field of AI. In particular with the innovative application of Dempster-Shafer, merged with all the best AI paradigms.

While most AI books contain coursework material or surveys of current algorithms, this book is a mathematical feast.

Be prepared to spend time, to understand the theorem proofs, before applying the theory.

The book is out of print. People who have the book and understand the theory are much ahead.

This is an incredible book with excellent photos and descriptions of the history and mechanical functions of a rare collection that would make even the Brothers Quay envious. Unfortunately it is out of print--not impossible to find, but very expensive--$... range. Hopefully publishers (Rizzoli???) will take notice and re-issue this volume.

Andre Noton is the Best!!!!!!!!!
This is one of Andre Norton's earlier works. It isn't as good as the books she's written in the last 10 years, but it is still one of the best Sci-Fi books out there. If you can find it. I got my copy at my library. It is about Merlin, half man half alien who is sent on a mission by a mirror in a mountain to send Arthur, also half alien, half man, to the throne. But he has to get past the Lady of the Lake first. All in all a great book!
