visual pleasure
If your are a working and/or just love visual arts, this book is a MUST to have. It is a pure pleasure to see these sequences and collages of photos arranged carefully and for my eye "perfect" - since I shoot still-sequences for the past 4 years. It's not just a coffee table book - it's to literally "inhale" its art.

Battleships of the Scharnhorst Class: The Scharnhorst and Gneisenau: The Backbone of the German Surface Forces at the Outbreak of War
Published in Hardcover by Greenhill Books (1999)
Author: Gerhard Koop
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Good Technical Information
Overshadowed by the big battleships of the Bismark class, the sister ships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau proved to be just as valuable to the German navy in WWII. This book provides many excellent photographs and technical drawings for all aspects of these ships - their hull design, weapon mounts, radar systems, camouflage schemes, refits during the war, and even a brief history of the men who's names were given to these ships.

Also covered is the battle history for each ship. The Gneisenau basically sat in port for most of the war but tied down some RAF bombers and Royal Navy vessels in accordance with the "fleet in being" theory. The Scharnhorst had a more 'glamorous' life of threatening the arctic convoys until it was badly battered and eventually scuttled after sustaining thirteen 14in shell hits, twelve 8in shell hits, and over ten torpedo hits(!) during a fight pitting her alone against a British force consisting of four destroyers, four cruisers, and a battleship.

The book is well laid out and provides good reading. It also makes a good reference book with excellent photographs and drawings.

Healing the Western Mind
The artworks and political ideas of German artist Joseph Beuys are deeply discussed into this interesting book. In the 1960's, Joseph Beuys was an underground name in the American artworld, but his reputation preceeded him.  Beuys had controversial feelings towards the US. His first art project in the United States, the action I Like America and America Likes Me, took place at Block's gallery in 1974. For this performance, Beuys traveled to Manhattan wrapped in felt, and then spent a week with a coyote, engaging it in a number of ritualistic encounters. For the 1987-88 exhibition at Dia Center for the Arts (New York), Lynne Cooke wrote... "as he consolidated a philosophy aimed at a revolution in both mind and body through an art devised to effect social and political transformation, he increasingly engaged in public pedagogy, language itself becoming for him an aesthetic medium. Maier solidly defines a "no limits" approach to bible study
Maier defines and justifies a biblical-historical no limits method as a superior alternative to historical-critical and other forms of handling biblical hermeneutics. Believers will find reason and logic on why reason and logic are human limits placed upon a divine document. Unbelieveing criticism is challenged by Maier in understanding, inspiration, authority and unity of scripture, history, and a basis for continual development of an unlimited approach to anyones study of the bible. All readers (yes, even unbelievers) will benefit from the concepts and principals presented here joined with a multitude of arguments and analysis from the principally important believers perspective. If you want to engage in the field of hermeneutical criticism you will find yourself informed and equipped. Maier has put together a fairly easy read primer for a difficult and infinitely complex "sui generis" subject.

Great book for simple, beginner birdhouses
I've been hogging this book from my local library, and just decided to add it to my wishlist for an upcoming birthday.

The plans are simple and very straightforward, oriented for people without expensive woodworking tools or without a lot of experience. The book includes eight birdhouse plans and six feeder plans. Several of the plans include optional variations. The plans are easy to understand.

These would also be good plans to build with a son or daughter.

The book is well written and up to date. It also includes a large table of specifications for houses/feeders that will attract specific types of birds.

Very helpful book.
