This is THE thermal physics book!
A very well-written book, with all thermodynmical concepts explained clearly and with appropriate examples. Exercises are extensive and cover in full detail all the material at the end of each chapter. Though expensive, definitely worth the investment. The statistical mechanics part is greatly entertaining and an enjoyable read. All in all, text is well-balanced. Should become the prescribed text for all introductory course in Thermal Physics.

Excellent, balanced treatment.
This is the best introductory thermo, stat mech book available. Very clear with a nice set of problems.

A must for serious DB professionals
Tradicionally, the 'transaction' concept is always discussed at the RDBMS classes in the University. But this book goes FAR BEYOND this wide known implementation; with a solid math foundation (some math required, specially set theory and algorithms ) it shows you there are a lot of 'real-life' transactions that requiere some formal methods for defining their implementation.

This book has no discussion or topic regarding any comercial vendor technologies (specially databases), and I think this is very good. The Page and Object models for transaction processing are clearly explained. There's a very nice discussion concerning RAID technologies.

This is not an 'academic' book in all the sense of the word. It can help IT professionals to make better transactional system desing (databases, workflow,e-business,etc).

I would like some RDBMS vendors will include this kind of theory in their documentation....

Up-to-date ... sends an old friend into semi-retirement
Before this book was published my primary reference and personal favorite TP book was "Transaction Processing: Concepts and Techniques" by Jim Gray and Andreas Reuter. At over 1100 pages that book thoroughly covered the basics and drilled down into the nuances of transaction processing in a way unmatched by other books on the topic since it was first published in 1993.

This book changes that by going far beyond transaction processing. It starts with the same fundamentals as the older book, and even covers many of the same topics, such as concurrency control, but it addresses each topic from a much wider perspective. For example, the discussion of concurrency goes far beyond the issues of transaction processing as a middleware component. It extends into application, database and search issues. Another indication that this book is more up-to-date is the material on queue managers. While they are at the opposite end of the spectrum from transaction processing monitors, they are integral to any discussion of transactional information systems. More importantly, both transaction processing monitors and queue managers are used in modern enterprise architectures. Having both topics discussed in great detail is a major point in this book's favor.

Personally I intend to keep my copy of the older "Transaction Processing: Concepts and Techniques" because it does cover some of the subject matter more deeply. However, this book has replaced it as my principal reference and if I had to choose between them this is the one I'd go with.

Don't wait too long to do retirement planning.
I have worked and socialized with many doctors who I thought were well off when it came to retirement savings. When they approached 60 to 65 years old, they couldn't afford to retire and maintain the lifestyle they wanted. How sad! I don't want to end up that way.

Great book! I wish they had written it sooner.
This book had everything I need to plan my retirement. Easy to read and informative, I have already recommended it to many of my colleagues. Thanks to the authors for recognizing the need for such a book for lawyers like myself.

Rich and Fascinating
I was perplexed at the "Publishers Weekly" review of this
book, citing that "all of the descriptions sound the same".
Whoever wrote that must not have clearly read the book.
The experiences people have differ greatly with the TYPE of
posture, and this is clearly explained in this book, as well
as in a book by Belinda Gore ("Ecstatic Body Postures: An
Alternate Reality Workbook). I have personally attended a
seminar of this work, and continue to practice it, with
others, and our experiences are not the "same". They are
amazing, rich, deep, and healing - and different for different
people.
This particular book is a wonderful story of how anthropologist
Felicitas Goodman was led to even formulate her thesis in the
first place- by great trial and error, working with hundreds
of people all around the world - a work which has continued
for over twenty years. She describes in detail the experiences
of many people as they "journey" by assuming the postures, to
a specific drumming or rattling beat. She shares how the Cuyamungue Institute was founded over 25 years ago - a combination of practical hard work and magical, inspirational
experiences. She shares how, over time, certain postures revealed
themselves as "fitting" into various catagories- such as healing,
divining, metamorphosis, lower world journey, and so on. In addition to being a wonderful insight into shamanic types of
endeavor, this is a story of the life of a dedicated scholar, led by many insights and observations, to develop a body of work
which is a scientific research work in progress, as well as being a possible link to the ancient roots of humanity. I recommend it to anyone interested in spirituality,
the psyche, somatics, healing, and shamanism.

A Most Significant Piece of Work
I found this book to be one of the most helpful works to the study of shamanic realizations. Ms. Goodman has opened up our minds to astounding possibilities.

African Dinosaurs Unearthed
This work of original research is not your "run of the mill" dinosaur book. It makes extensive use of European archival sources to seamlessly weave both history and palaeontology together to tell the story of Tendaguru. It is detailed, thorough and challenging! The photos, many seen for the first time, are awesome.

American Judaism in Transition
Published in Hardcover by University Press of America (01 August, 1995)
Author: Gerhard Falk
Amazon base price: $75.50
Used price: $41.92
Average review score:

Vital for anyone interested in American Jewish survival.
This is a book as remarkable as it is disturbing. The author traces, in a scholarly, objective manner, the increasing secularization in all of American life, with an emphasis on the special dangers for Jews and Judaism. Detailed, eye opening proof is offered that even the Jewish religion itself is, in America, becoming secularized. There has been great controversy about this book in both Jewish organizational circles, due to its unfortunately frank description of the practices of Jewish organizations (including listing the salaries of officers of ostensibly charitable organizations) and in the religious community, owing to the recommendation that Jews proselytize for converts.

Best of the Grass books, I think.
Once again (like in "The tin drumm" and "Cat and mouse") the story of ordinary people goes epic, trough the eyes and voices of different Danzig inhabitants, the autor find an objective review of the known facts involved the II World War.

The Perfect Holiday Gift
When your child starts to think that the holidays are nothing more than a chance to get lots of toys, it's time for Antonella and Her Santa Claus. It's a Christmas story they won't see animated on TV. This book will open your child's eyes to the meaning of Christmas... and giving. It's beautifully illustrated. Highly recommended!

Arthur Baker's Copybook of Renaissance Calligraphy: Mercator's Italic Hand
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (1981)
Authors: Arthur Baker, Gerhard Mercator, and William Hogarth
Amazon base price: $2.50
Used price: $6.30
Average review score:

Fine addition to Calligrapher's library
While Gerhardus Mercator was known for his geographical work and knowledge, few knew that he was also a very fine calligrapher. This book is an excellent resource for those interested in increasing their knowledge of calligraphy styles. WHat is particularly interesting about this book is the fact that the leters are very true to Mercator's original letters because he cut his own printing blocks. The swooping letters, very elegant, are organic in form, not harsh or rigid. All the designs, by the way, are copyright free - a nice bonus.
