A Guided Tour to Carl Jung
This is a biography of Carl Jung (1875-1961), but so much more than that. It traces his life and professional development, drawing on letters and extensive quotes from the Collected Works. It is profusely illustrated, not only with photographs of Jung and the relevant people and places in his life, but also with his drawings. After Jung's break with Freud in the early 1910's, Jung went through a about a decade of professional isolation and rich personal growth. During that time, he kept a journal called the "Red Book", which he decorated with drawing and paintings based on his dreams and active imagination. Many striking images from the Red Book are reproduced in this volume: a drawing of Philemon, Jung's inner spiritual guide; the viscerally disquieting "Meeting with the Shadow"; and a singularly captivating image, "The Light at the Heart of Darkness". Photos of Jung in his travels and at his house in Bollingen round out this engaging visual tour of Jung's contribution. This is a wonderful introduction to Jung's life and work, especially for someone of an artistic inclination.

mind-blowing, dogma-shattering
A very fine collection...with plenty of glimpses at Jung's trans-analytic speculations and personal reactions. Soulful and, in places, very funny too.

Sex and Brains
This book does so many things well: it traces the intellectual history of ideas about female sexuality in pyschology and social thought, and it then discusses how feminists both challenged and used those ideas to make a feminist sexual revolution. But this important intellectual and cultural history is also incredibly fun to read. The chapter on "sex novels" is particularly innovative, and you'll learn more about the feminist "sex wars" here than anywhere else. Highly recommended!

Sex and Feminism
This is a wonderful book-- for both scholars and general readers. Relatively little has been written (yet) about the history of women's liberation, and Gerhard's analysis of how and why sexuality came to matter to second wave feminism fills an enormous gap; it is sure to become essential reading. Like Dan Horowitz's influential biography of Betty Friedan, this book offers an important intellectual history of second wave feminism-- from early in the 20th century onward, and from Freud to Erica Jong; with a light touch, then, Gerhard is making many insightful points about the methods and sources that historians use, and the relationship between theory and history. And, not the least, the stereotype of feminists as "anti-sex" simply falls apart in the face of this analysis.

I teach US history, and my students have loved this smart and engaging book. But my mother in law loved it too!

Excellent source for Genesis insight
This book is not for people who want to hear how inerrant the Old Testament is. Rather it is a fine example of what true Theological examination looks like. Gerhard von Rad takes Genesis and dissects it into fine details. Rarely does von Rad overlook a single detail. Taking into account language, history, and literary device, von Rad deals with Genesis in a way that will open up the stories into a new light, revealing pictures you've never even noticed before. Theist and atheist alike will find this commentary very insightful and useful in their study of Genesis.

This book is an excellent resource for pastors.
This book is an excellent resource for pastors. It is a commentary after the tradition of german higher criticism. I am an orthodox reformed pastor who does not submit to the presuppositions of higher criticism. However, using such a commentary allows me to gain insight into language and cultural issues of the text that might not otherwise come to my attention. Pastors and lay people without training in the origional biblical languages and intricacies of higher criticism should take great caution in utilizing a resource such as Genesis: A Commentary. Others with proper training will appreciate and benefit from Von Rad's excellent work.

An amazing life
Gerhard Neumann was a friend of my fathers for many years. As a boy my father constantly reminded me about the excellence of German engineering and dedication to their work. He also spoke very highly of Gerhard Neumann who personified this to a tee. After reading this book I find my life VERY DULL! Dad never spoke of the adventures that come with such dedication. Most enjoyable book I have every read. Thanks Dad, & Gerhard

Fantastic drama of an innovative mechanic turned engineer
Great story of an innovative young German man who ended up in Hong Kong at the beginning of World War 2 following an auto repair apprenticeship in Germany, pieced together a Japanese zero to evaluate its weaknesses and change US fighting tactics against the Japanese, came to the US after the war and developed gas turbine engines for General Electric.

multivariate methods using generalized linear models
Back in 2000 Stephen Fienberg gave a talk at the University of California at Irvine on the 2000 census and his book "Who Counts". After the talk I went to dinner with him, my colleague Bob Newcomb and Anita Iannucci. Driving to dinner Bob ask Steve for a recommendation on a multivariate textbook. A number of choice were mentioned. Bob's favorite was Cooley and Lohnes but that was a bit dated. He was definitely looking for an applied text and not a theoretical one. I learned my multivariate analysis out of the first edition of Ted Anderson's book. But that is traditional multivariate Gaussian theory and is not at all an applied text. I always liked Gnanadesikan's book and I mentioned that. Srivastava and carter is an applied text that I like and there are many other choices.

I don't recall many of Fienberg's suggestions but I do distinctly recall that he did say that now you can teach it as a special case of the generalized linear models. The idea seemed to make sense to me but I couldn't picture the details. This book is apparently the book Fienberg had in mind. He might have been thinking about the first edition because this second edition was not out then.

The book is very applied and modern and covers many important topics for biostatisticians. Coverage includes multicategorical responses, semi and nonparametric modelling, time series and longitudinal data, random effects models, state space models including Kalman Filters and nonlinear models, and survival analysis. This is not traditional multivariate data but covers many type of multivariate data and models that do not fit the standard multivariate Gaussian theory.

Chapter 4 on selecting and checking models seems to deal with the classical linear models taking a non-standard approach through the methods of generalized linear models.

Excellent text for an applied course and for a reference book. It also covers hidden Markov models and Bayesian methods (including the MCMC implementation and the WinBugs software).

A quality text
Great book! Presents clear information about statistical computational details, as well as a number of nonstandard models (including those of Tutz's original work). The book has a transparent build-up, from more easy modeling exercises to advanced applications. I like best the part on generalized linear time series modeling, using the extended Kalman filter in the context of the EM algorithm. The only critique I have concerns the handling of (the variance of) the measurement error term in the associated generalized state space model (this measurement error should be modeled as a constrained martingale difference).

A superb book on continuum mechanics
I am a graduate student with the mechanical engineering department at Dalhousie university. This book is one of the best texts I have ever read. Every chapter is well organised and the material is presented in a clear manner that stimulates your interest on the subject of continuum mechanics. I have no doubt that engineers of all disciplines (students & professionals) as well as physists and other scientists will find the book as exciting as I have.

One of the best books on Continuum Mechanics.
I think this book tends to fill the bibliographic void left by the Classic and "currently dificult to get" works of C. Truesdell's "The Non-Linear Field Theories of Mechanics" and D. C. Leigh's "Nonlinear Continuum Mechanics; An Introduction to the Continuum Physics and Mathematical Theory of the Nonlinear Mechanical Behavior of Materials". This book is divided mainly in two parts, one part dealing with the mathematical framework at which the subject is based on, and the other one deals with the Physical Principles and the Constitutive Theories of several materials including rubber like materials and biological tissue. It is true that you will not find a specific definition of Nonlinear Material Behavior as I was supposed to find it at the begginig of the work. Instead of that, such a definition must be self-generated into the decided reader's mind, once he or she begins to read the book's parts regarding to Hyperelastic and Viscoelastic Materials .

The Origin of Birds.

Beg, cheat, steal, whatever... get this book!
This is a classic in evolutionary biology just as the works of Newton, Copernicus, Galileo, DaVinci, Darwin were in their respective fields. Some may be disappointed by the space given to proving that birds are reptiles and not mammals, but if you read it you will love it. Strictly speaking, this book both started and ended the debate on the origin of birds. Few people disagreed with Heilmann's conclusions that birds could not have come from theropods for some 50 years until Ostrom published his classic works on the theropod hypothesis of the origin of birds (all of these put together would make for an interesting and worthwhile book). Although most experts disagree with Heilmann's conclusions today, it is very interesting to read Heilmann's reasons for them for he reveals that he is a true scientist. Heilmann may not have had the training, but he had the heart and the facts at the time to back up his conclusion.

Essential work on bird origins
Get this, at no matter what cost. Heilmann's standard work on bird origins, first published (in Danish) in 1916, has dominated the field for some fourty-five years, and is still very much worth reading. The B&W-illustrations are exquisite, and many are among the 'classics' of dinosaur iconography. This is a 1972 re-print of the English edition, which was published in 1926. If you've never read this, you're not likely to make much sense of later theories of bird origins.

a good companion to Jung's ALCHEMICAL STUDIES
Jung surpasses himself here by seeing in alchemical symbolism the psyche trying to discover itself to the artifex bent over his alchemical retort. Only one who'd discovered his own version of the fabulous Philosopher's Stone could have attempted such a work.

Making sense of concealed
This book is a result of Jung's extensive study of old Alchemical practices and his efforts to connect and interpret it in the light of his own psychological concepts. The book gives sense to ancient Alchemy practices and explains them as symbols of the process of human spiritual growth.

Jung explains different steps of this process and illustrates them with phases of the symbolic process of alchemic transmutation, leading to integration of the soul and producing alchemyc gold - or in terms of his own concept the result of the process of individuation.

Concrete examples from his own psychiatric experience of dream analysis and monitoring psychological growth very vividly and convincingly illustrate this concept in action.

The book is richly illustrated with authentic alchemic iconography which renders reader authentic atmosphere and taste of ancient art.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in connecting ancient spiritual practices and modern psychological interpretation theories.

Revelation (Augsburg Commentary on the New Testament)
Published in Paperback by Fortress Press (1989)
Author: Gerhard A. Krodel
Amazon base price: $21.00
Average review score:

Excellent for the pastor
This is an excellent commentary on Revelation for pastors, preachers and students looking to the pulpit. It is scholarly without being over academic and it is readable. He has the knack of getting to the spiritual meaning of the passage, which makes it especially valuable for pastors wanting to feed their flock. He rightly highlights the twin themes of worship and idolatry, rather than emphasising persecution thus making it more useful to the church in the West. He served as a pastor for four years and I have a strong suspicion that he still regularly preaches; the preacher could easily preach whole paragraphs from this volume.

The introduction is excellent for its history of the misinterpretation of Revelation. It has no footnotes, the Greek is kept to a minimum necessary to bring out the meaning of the text but it is sufficiently detailed to keep the preacher and student happy. The scholar may find that the lack of references to sources and a lack of an index frustrating. I might quibble with the author calling the four living creatures "God's pets", but this is a typical preachers prerogative. I certainly think that the publishers should have made the book from a larger paper size.

However this is still one of the best commentaries available on Revelation today, especially for the preacher. Preachers looking for further application may find Keener useful, which does emphasise current day persecution.

The best commentary on Revelation for the next 1,000 years.
I have read this commentary and studied it three times since about the beginning of the 1990's. It ranks in my opinion as the best commentary on Revelation ever written in church history! That is a lot to be said. It is better than the works on Revelation by Ireneus, Waalvord, Lindsay, Darby, Scofield, etc. Krodel penetrates into the heart of Revelation. He gets passed the time line syndrome that has bogged theologians for millenia. Krodel shows us the heart and soul of Revelation and how to survive in the end times. Krodel takes out the foolheartiness so commonly found in prophetic interpretations. I recommend the sound doctrine and exhortation to worship the Lamb as the chief guard against succumbing to the spirit of the Antichrist.

thought-provoking and fascinating
This thought-provoking book is comprised of comprehensive essays written by various established scholars. Amongst the topics covered are religion, creation, kingship and the netherworld. The book consists of fascinating surveys of the Ancient Egyptian temples. Byron Shafer gives an overview of temples and rituals; Dieter Arnold explains the evolution of the pyramids through the Middle Kingdom; Gerhard Haeny explained the temples of the Ramessid Period; Lanny Bell describes the Luxor Temple (the monument most visited by tourists); and Ragnbild Finnestad writes on Ptolemaic and Roman temples. A recommended book for the interested.

For the avid Egyptophile
Shafer, et al have compiled a very well written and extremely in-depth examination of the meaning and importance of temples in ancient Egypt. All the sections were fascinating but I especially found Lanny Bell's treatment of Luxor temple (derived from his many years of work there), Gerhard Haeny's section on Mansions of Millions of Years, and Finnestad's chapter on Ptolemaic temples (really a discussion of the context of this period of temples) to be especially engaging. All of these added greatly to my understanding of the topics they addressed. I would recommend this to any serious Egyptophile with the caveat that it is all written largely in scholarly terms. They don't entirely assume prior knowledge but without some foundation in Egyptological literature, readers might find this interesting but a bit thick.
