Black Cowboy, Wild Horses: A True Story

Multiethnic Biographical Picture Book
This book is based on a true story about Bob Lemmons, a African American Cowboy. The pictures are outstanding representations of the story. It is a tale of a cowboy and his ability to ride with wild horses. He has the ability to lead the horses into thinking that he is one of them. Yes, a wild horse! This book could be used as an introduction to biographies or cowboys for young people. I would read it to 5-10 year old children. It is wonderfully written and would be a asset to any school or public library.

Black Lawyers, White Courts: The Soul of South African Law
Published in Hardcover by Ohio Univ Ctr for Intl Studies (1999)

Amazon base price: $45.00

Amazing but true--lawyers can be the good guys
This book captures the struggles of some of the real heroes of the anti-apartheid movement, the black lawyers of South Africa. From those who went from the cells of Robben Island to corporate boardrooms, to those who stood side by side with Nelson Mandela in court and now are judges, these amazing individuals used their smarts and savvy to tear down a corrupt system. These courageous individuals often used the very laws the apartheid government had devised to argue that the system was fundamentally corrupt. Although Professor Broun primarily let's his subjects tell their stories, using an oral history approach to their lives, the commentary he adds allows the reader to understand the background of these men and women and how they fit into the South African legal system. As an added bonus, the book contains a message from Nelson Mandela, South Africa's most famous lawyer. A must read for anyone interested in South Africa and for anyone who needs evidence that lawyers aren't always the bad guys.

There's Nothing Like the Blues.....
As Julius Lester tells his granddaughter and us, too, in the introduction, "...the blues are like having the flu in your feelings. But instead of your nose being stuffed up, it's your heart that feels like it needs blowing... The words of a blues song might be sad, but the music and the beat wrap around your heart like one of your grandmother's hugs." Meet ten artists who "rocked the world" with their music. From the legendary Bessie Smith, Muddy Waters, Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, and B.B. King, to Mahalia Jackson, Little Richard, and James Brown, whose music was inspired and influenced by the blues, Mr Lester profiles their lives, times and careers, and passes on the love of the blues to a whole new generation. His captivating text, written in an easy to read, conversational style, is evocative, and full of historical information, fun facts, quotes from other musicians, and personal anecdotes, and along with Lisa Cohen's marvelously bright, bold, and expressive portraits really brings each artist to life on the page. With a bibliography and suggested reading and listening lists at the end, The Blues Singers, Ten Who Rocked The World, is a terrific and informative introduction that's just perfect for young music lovers 9 and older. "Honey, if it wasn't for the blues, we probably wouldn't have anything to listen to except our toenails growing."

Well Written History
As history books go this one is surprisingly well written and also quite detailed considering it is aimed at young people. The author covers the subject thoroughly and accurately. Unfortunately, though the book does have footnotes, they do have page numbers, which seems extremely odd. I thumbed through two other volumes by the same author and their notes did have page numbers, as they are supposed to. The reason for this is a mystery, however the book is well worth the read if you are interested in Caesar and his career.

A must for persons having cataract surgery
I strongly recommend this book for anyone considering cataract surgery. I wish I had read it before having surgery, I would have had a much better idea of what was going on. The illustrations are very clear and the writers sense of humor is appreciated. Also, the short history of cataract surgery makes one feel lucky to be living today with surgeons having so many sophisticated tools.

The best of A Course in Miracles
This little book is a gem which makes for an ideal gift for somebody you want to introduce to the Course. It's selections show the beauty and wisdom of the Course in a Reader's Digest format. Well suited for meditations or a review of some of the highlights of the Course. In no way can it replace the study of the Course itself.

CliffsNotes Julius Caesar
Published in Digital by Hungry Minds ()
Authors: Martha Perry and James E. Vickers
Amazon base price: $5.99
Average review score:

Understanding the structure & characters of "Julius Caesar"
James Vickers' Cliffs Notes for Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" begins with a short biography of the Bard that focuses on what little the historical record tells us about the man. A Brief Synopsis of the Play is followed by a List of Characters that not only tells us who they are but their primary roles in the play. The Summary and Commentary section of the volume breaks down the play scene by scene, and the best way of using this or any other little yellow book with the black stripes is to read the commentary after you have read each scene of the play. This is especially important with Shakespeare because the dialogue is so important and Vickers does not work in as many choice lines as some of the other Cliffs Notes for Shakespeare plays. You cannot deal with Shakespeare if you do not know the key lines. The last section dealing with Character Analyses looks as Caesar, Antony, Octavius, Brutus and Cassius, referring back to the analysis already established regarding the individual scenes. What you will not get from this volume if you are teaching/reading "Julius Caesar" is how the play touches upon the political realities of Elizabethean England. But Vickers does an excellent job throughout of capturing how Shakespeare uses the play to manipulate the audience. Remember, the celebrated funeral oration by Marc Antony is being listened to on stage by a Roman mob that is being watched by an audience of Londoners in the theater. This is one of the better jobs at capturing how Shakespeare constructed a play.

A deeply penetrating psychological account
Dr. Clark has struck a sensitive nerve in the consciousness of a nation in his 1965 study of black neighborhoods. Revised in 1989 with an introduction by William Julius Wilson, and a foreword by Gunnar Myrdal, it is apparent that other scholars respect Clark's work as well. I was particularly impressed by the self-honesty of his methodology -- he calls it his "involved observer" method, which shows much more concern for the subjects of the study than traditional "disinterested observer" approaches, espoused by so-called "value-free" social scientists. Also recommended are other books by Clark, and most anything by Cornel West, Lewis R. Gordon, Allen Spear, and Alex Kotlowitz. A related book to "Dark Ghetto" is "Racism & Psychiatry," by Alexander Thomas and Samuel Sillen, with an introduction by K. Clark.
