very intelligent
This book is incredible; there hasn't been anything like it since the Story of O and, frankly, if you were turned on by Lolita, here's a User's Guide that would probably make Heidi Fleiss blush. Take it from me, I'm the author.

A Helpful Book Full of Interprative Essays
I am a sophomore attending Marquette University, and for my British Literature Class, we had to write a 7-10 pg paper for our final research project on any work we covered in class.

I chose Othello. The purpose of the assignment was to pick a topic related to the work and find various interpretations that would help you prove your point. Scott does a very nice job of collecting various reputable authors in his discussions of each play. From what I could tell, he chose professors and esteemed writers for all the essays I read.

I also liked how he gave a brief synopsis of each play before the essays. He also makes sure that there are in-depth character sketches for each main character and descriptions of the main themes in the plays.

I picked up this book from our library and I enjoyed his collections on Othello. Therefore, since I believe it is a valuable resource, I have decided to purchase the book myself.

I recommend it highly as a source to any student.

An Excellent Resource
I was so frustrated with ordering guides and lesson ideas that turned out to be a fifty page guide of the most useless essays ever written on Shakespeare. This is the real thing. a 2 inch thick, 3 ring binder full of ideas that you can use in your class. You don't just get a bunch of worksheets, you get progressive exercises that look at problems in the plays, issues your students want to know about, and background that helps them contextualize the information. I wish I would have had this book when I started teaching. I find myself going back to it again and again.

A Short History of Medieval Philosophy

Wonderful as an introduction.
The text is a bit dated, I will be the first to admit, though so is the subject matter! However, the book is comprehensive and thorough, leaves out nothing of importance, and gives a good and balanced picture of not only the "what" but the "why" of medieval thinking. If you are an old pro at Aquinas et al, this is a good historical overview to what you already know, maybe in a more concise and intelligent format than you are used to seeing in books on medieval philosophy. If you are a student, and especially if you are not all that familiar with what is going on with medieval thinkers, I can hardly recommend this short history any more highly.

I have little to add to the three excellent recommendations I reproduce below:

"What is most striking about the entire book is its just perspective and its fine balance between scholarly prudence and philosoohical suggestiveness in the presentation of the ideas and problems distinctive of medieval philosophy. . . . As a sketch of medieval philosophy it qualifies as something of a classic."--Philosophical Review

"The author carefully traces the influence of Greek philosophy and of the three great reigious traditions . . . on the great medieval scholastics. Professor Weinberg's book is a real contribution toward a sympathetic grasp of a tradition which he tells us must be retained and reexamined incessantly if we are to learn form the past."--Review of Metaphysics

"The style is straightforward and clear; the content is judiciously selected; the interpretations are intelligent, impartial, scholarly."--Speculum

To Be A Slave
By interweaving the tetimonies and memories of slaves with historical records of the slave industry and plantation life, Julius Lester creates a truthful and shameful portrait of the degredation of slave life and slavery as the foundation of the United States' agricultural economy. Truly worthy of it Newbery Honor status, Lester's research leaves no stone unturned. His work cites the Library of Congress' records, private documents of white slave owners held at the University of South Carolina, and the oral memories of the descendants of slaves. To Be A Slave encompasses: early slavery in Europe, the first white slaves/indentured servants in the United States, the capture and transport of Africans to the United States, how families were destroyed, faith systems lost and African languages obliterated. Lester's documentary is a tragic commentary on how the white man perfected the institution of slavery and controlled every aspect of a slave's life. Francis-James, Thigpen, and Woods' methoidcal reading of Lester's factual accounts, and their dignified performances of slaves' testimonies reinforce the unflinchingly honest portrait of slave life from a black perspective. Chapters are marked with gospel music. This subtly conveys how gospel music sustained the black man and made him a spiritual being of heart and soul, not just a powerful animal in the eyes of the oppressing white race. This four hour narrative should not only be required listening, but To Be A Slave should be mandatory reading for atleast grades six and above.

I am the greatest writer on earth
Not only is it a terrific play, it is also true. You could check with Cleopatra.com about all the dishy details. By the way, I am working now on a true gory love story, that I may call Hamlet, or Get Thee to a Nunnery. Also, we are negotiating film rights.
