Great read on the Old Testament
If you want a short summary of what happened in the Old Testament, this is your book. ALhtough Delitzsch gets into hebrew, it is not necessary to know Hebrew, although it would help. Kiel and Delitzsch also have an excellent commentary of the Old Testament which is the standard volumes for Old Testament study. Read and enjoy.

Outstanding! A scholarly guide to typology and prophecy.
This outstanding work demonstrates how the Old Testament is, from beginning to end, essentially about Christ. Prof. Delitzsch provides insight into the Old Testament prophetic and typological references to Christ in a way that is both thought provoking and inspirational. Some Latin and Hebrew, but not enough to take away from the meanining of the text (I have not studied either language). The book's short chapters make it ideal for a devotional/study guide. It is not light reading, but is well worth the extra effort.

My opinion of "On Doing Time" and Morton Sobell
This is an excellent book and details of how a man that would in this day and time be considered a "white collar criminal" was treated like the most hard criminals.Like being sent to Alcatraz. Its goes into every detail of how he delt with being locked up for 18 years( 6+ years on Alcatraz).Unlike many criminals who had no family on the outside, this man did.It would be interesting for him to "undate" this book by adding a chapter on his 31+ years out of prison. (That is how sucessful was he or any further and later views on his being in prison.)

Moving, engrossing and still important

When "atom spies" Julius and Ethel Rosenberg went on trial in 1950 there was a third American defendant. While the Rosenbergs took the stand in their own defense and adamantly maintained their innocence, which so angered the judge and prosecutors that the death penalty was imposed, Morton Sobell remained silent on advice of counsel, and waited for the government to fail to make its case against him. He was convicted anyway, but his silence might have saved his life: He was spared the death penalty and sentenced to a 30-year prison term instead. He served 18 years, 5 years of them on Alcatraz, which is where much of ON DOING TIME takes place. The book was first published in 1974 but was just reissued by the Golden Gate National Park Association.

Despite the title, the book is about much more than what it was like for an extraordinarily decent, gentle and probably innocent man to be locked away in the country's most notorious maximum security penitentiary. This is Sobell's first person account of the events surrounding one of the most infamous trials in American history, which sparked demonstrations all over the world and began a debate that still rages today. His insights into the trial and the events leading up to it are as valuable historically as they are fascinating. The new edition includes a CD that contains many of the heretofore-classified documents he fought for decades to get his hands on.

Sobell's quest to unearth these documents was not driven by his desire for exoneration -- he seems unconcerned with whether anyone believes in his innocence -- but by his fervent wish to expose what he considers the devious, underhanded and outright fraudulent means to which the government will resort in its pursuit of "undesirables" in emotionally-charged situations. (I imagine he danced a jig when the government's reprehensible treatment of Wen Ho Lee was exposed.) He is particularly incensed about the highly-publicized "Venona" decryption project that purportedly led to his and the Rosenbergs' apprehension and, using the files on the CD, does a mighty convincing job of demonstrating how absurd some of the links between cabled code names and actual persons were arrived at.

ON DOING TIME, however, is not another rehash of the facts and speculation already well-covered in dozens of books. It is the very human tale of how it all affected one man who, to this day, refuses to be bitter and insists on casting his personal experience in a larger historical and political context, all of which is heavily layered with his persistent and unapologetic left-wing slant. It is extremely well-written, gripping and enlightening, and I recommend it very highly to the general reader as well as the armchair historian.

A Great Book About Enjoying Life
This book is filled with "stop to smell the roses" stories about people who find pleasure in life. This book can change one's attitude. I highly recommend it. I had a copy 12 years ago but it has since disappeared. I've been searching for a replacement on the Internet and in brick and mortar bookstores for months now without success.

A book that will bring you much enjoyment.
This is one of my all time favorite books, one that I have sent copies of to friends. It has opened my eyes to many previously unexplored ways to have an enjoyable time. It not only introduces you to many interesting and various pleasures, but it also helps you to get an idea in advance why a particular pursuit might be pleasurable. It is surprising the diversity and simplicity of things to do, found in this book, that bring a person pleasure. By simply trying out some of the recommendations one can be lead to understand what pleasure is about and how it can be obtained in ways a person probably wouldn't try if this book hadn't been read. This book truly can enrich your life as it has mine. Guilt free hedonism! My thanks to Julius Fast for sharing the good times. If it comes out in a revised edition I would definitely buy a second copy.

The Wonders of Medical Research
If anyone ever doubted the value of research in the medical laboratory, this is THE book to read. It provides an excellent overview of the history of biomedical science, the value of laboratory studies -- including animal studies, and of the trials and tribulations of scientists. This book gives many examples of the roadblocks which scientists may face and is excellent argument for continued support of biomedical science by the federal government. I highly recommend this book and it is an easy read.

Excellent historical cases of medical innovation.
"Out of the box" creative thinking and doing are documented with many nay saying tribulations which often go hand-in-hand with different better ways of superior accomplishment.

Shakespeare's Mystery Play: The Opening of the Globe Theatre 1599

Great Book
Sohmer, has written a truely great book here. He goes in deapth, using primary sources to explain the social climate during the opening of the Globe Theatre. Using these items Sohmer illuminates hidden themes in Shakespeare's work. He adds yet another wonderful dimension to the Bard.

Great Book
Sohmer does an excellent job in this book detailing his idea of which play opened the Globe Theatre. Agree with him or not, this book is a wonderful exploration to the inner workings of Shakespeare's time and his plays. Sohmer goes into detail of the Elizabethian mind and how it relates to Shakespeare's work.

Excellent companion to standard American history textbook
I decided to use this book as a companion reader in a course in American history this year. This series of essays, which consist primarily of topics in social history, are an excellent complement to our very traditional textbook, which stresses political and diplomatic history. The authors of the essays are top names in the field, and the student response to the essays has been fantastic. I highly recommend this book as a teaching aide!

Excellent Collection of Readings
The Social Fabric presents a detailed array of readings insocial history for any United States History course. The readingsspecifically encourage two main revelations: U.S. History has many more interesting stories than the textbooks reveal and the historian's craft is much more complex than many students admit. The anthology is entirely engaging with details about daily life and customs. This book makes great general reading and should be required for all U.S. History courses.

A must for any Mallard hunter in the Carolinas!
Excellent account and history of one of the greatest bodies of waters in the Carolinas. JM Reynolds takes the reader from the early days of his childhood in the midlands of South Carolina when the great Santee was born up to present day with all the politics and troubles the lakes faces with growth, human encrouchment, and lack of habitat for the Anadidae. It is a down to earth story of one man's life memories upon one of the greatest places to learn the art of waterfowling. Of course, I'm a bit biased as I have also hunted Pine Island Creek "Big Ducks" or the "Bombers" of recent years on Russelville Flats of the "Lower Lake"!

If you've hunted the Santee, this book is a MUST for you but is great reading for any waterfowler or outdoorsman!

For anyone who has ever sought a true communion with nature
Sunrise On The Santee: A Memoir Of Waterfowling In South Carolina by Carolinian duck hunter Julius Reynolds is a picturesque, vivid, emotion inspiring testimony of experiencing what nature has to offer. Set in the splendor of South Carolina, and with an especial reverence for the glory of a brand new dawn, Sunrise on the Santee is a hunter's testament about treasuring life, including one's own life, the life of the natural world around one, and the life of the waterfowl hunted and consumed for sustenance. Of special interest are Reynolds commentaries on the future of waterfowling and the challenges future generations of hunters must deal with to save a rapidly vanishing wetlands environment upon which waterfowl migration depends if they are to return to the Santee. Sunrise On The Santee is highly recommended reading for anyone who has ever sought a true communion with nature.

Swing Easy, Hit Hard
Excellent golf instructional book...the best I've ever read and applied. This will be the third time I've purchased the book. On two prior occasions, I loaned it to a golfing buddy, but never got it back. This time it will stay in my library. Great and simple illustrations, with clear and concise explanation that helps not only the beginner, but also the seasoned golfer who wants to correct flaws in the swing that tend to creep in every once and a while. I strongly recommend this book.

Excellent for beginners or getting back to basics
This book is extremely straight forward and is not cluttered with unintelligible lingo. It will help *any* golfer get the club face square at impact...and I believe that's what we're all searching for. The book has very good illustration which will help the golfer actually *see* what is being explained in the text. I have a copy handed down to me from my father and then purchased another following the reprinting. If you don't have a copy - get one! it's the best [money] you'll ever spend on your golf game.

Lifetime Memories
I was raised on these tales of the wiley rabbit. My mother read me to sleep with The Songs of The South. Being from the heart of Dixie I have a very personal feeling for these wonderful colorful and enlightning tales of old. My middle age has allowed me to pass these tales on to my children and I am now reading them to my Grandchildren. In fact they are in demand from my kids wanting to read them to their children them selves when not convenient to do so by me.

Uncle Remus spins a whimsicle yarn and uses old time forgotten vinacular that titilates the imagination to heights that brings a giggle to the staunches personality.

The are truly an endless means of allowing imaginations paint colorful pictures and creating cool summer breezes under an old sycimore tree decked out with lazy spanish moss.

Highly recommended and truly a milestone in our Southern Heritage and culture of The Old South. Song of The South will endure and hold on like a Mississippi snapping turtle.

This book one is one of my all-time childhood favorites!
I personally haven't read the book in years, but my Grandmother (Mama Toler, we called her) bought that book for me when I was very young. Actually, if memory serves, it was a collection of stories with Uncle Remus telling the tales, and included several stories about the adventures of Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, Brer Wolf, and the Doogang. Oh, I can't forget to mention "Tar Baby" either! Even before I was old enough to read on my own, Mama Toler would hold me in her lap and read all about the Adventures of Brer Rabbit and the Briar Patch. I loved it when she would mimick Uncle Remus' laugh because her belly would jiggle and make me wiggle and giggle (can you tell the little child in me has been awakened?). This book is one is one of my all-time favorites and, although I haven't seen it in years, I'm thinking that this would be the perfect time for me to buy a copy for my four-year old granddaughter (and ME!) since she spends every other weekend with us and loves for "Nanna" to read to her. Thanks for rekindling some happy memories. Happy Reading to you all, too! Diane
