Laboratory Handbook of Dermatophytes
An excellent review of the principles of dermaophyte identification. Wonderfull graphic (photographs, charts) support of the technical principles constituting a procedural guide that is amoung the best available. This resource should stand the test of time as it is well grounded in the fundamentals and avoids jargon likely to be short lived. A MUST HAVE for mycology laboratories and the offices of Dermatologists.

Valuable reference for the maritime disaster enthusiast
Wolff's book is a chronological documentary and listing of every shipping accident and disaster known to have happened on Lake Superior between 1816 and 1989. [Since then, the advent of both precise, digital navigation technology and better storm forecasting by the National Weather Service have probably made major disasters like the Edmund Fitzgerald a thing of the past, the possible exceptions still being sabotage or devastating mechanical malfunction.] Wolff's book is, as advertised, a "complete reference," with roughly 12 pages of thorough Fitzgerald event coverage dwarfed by the remaining 270 pages of material. Yes, the cold, dark waters of Superior have entombed many a fine vessel before 1975! The reading got rather dry at times, since the writer takes a rather formulaic approach to documenting each incident. This didn't bother me enough to quit reading; and in a way such consistency does aid in looking for specific details common to more than one shipping accident. But I recommend that you not buy this book unless you are: 1) Very interested in the maritime history of Lake Superior or shipwrecks in general, or 2) Seeking well-organized decriptive information on Superior shipping disasters other than the Fitzgerald (about which so much has been written in other forums). If either, then this book is very well worth the cost.

Perfect, except for the bit with the blood
A wonderful little childrens book - if you don't mind a blood drenched last chapter. My little boy woke up screaming for a solid week. Stay away from that, is my advice. Otherwise, a light-hearted romp through a pumpkin patch of delights.

Lolita meets Psycho
This cinematic French graphic novel shows a clear Hitchcock influence in its story of a creepy man who is accused of murdering a teenage girl. Julius is a Anthony Perkins lookalike with a fun, pretty girlfriend, but he can't banish an unhealthy obsession with teenage girls from his head. One day his girlfriend takes him to dinner at a friend's house and he's exposed to their daughter, the rebellious and attractive Lea. When he is asked to house-sit and watch her for a weekend, it looks like the perfect chance to act on his obsession. And when she disappears and turns up dead, it looks he has-or has he? We're left guessing until almost the end of this short and potent morality tale.

Strong overview of the complexity of the time concept.
A most thorough and engaging book which researches and elucidates a huge number of facets of the difficult (and somewhat neglected) topic of time. The book is mainly a survey of concepts and less the presentation of an argument.

(Almost) all the documents you could ever need
The book presents a very nice documentary narrative of the major events and circumstances of the French Revolution. Some entries are a bit puzzling, like the Diderot passage, and there are some gaps, such as Robespierre's "Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen" (1793), but the overall value of the book is not diminished and can be supplemented by online sources (as was done in the class I took). Baker is, of course, a very fine intellectual historian, and his notes always provide sufficient transitions between the documents.
Prospects for Social Security Reform
Published in Hardcover by University of Pennsylvania Press (1999)
Amazon base price: $49.95

Excellent Overview
While the book provides an excellent background and a good assessment of likely options, it glossed over some considered politically unfeasible but which might be popular among the voters - for example, removing the cap on Social Security wages. It is clear the financial markets are dying to get their hands on the money. At the same time, most in the investment community don't want to create another board like CalPERS, which is active in corporate governance. Spinning out a portion to something like a defined contribution plan seems almost inevitable but is likely to result in higher administrative costs.

Random data and Coherent content
My major is meteorology and deal with time series data, which have huge amount of data number. This book is very helpful to me. I have to determine the statistical significance of my data and check up the assumptions both in time and frequency domain, before deciding the statistical tests. I read a few this kinds of books but they were only concentrated on the explanation of simple statistics theory and then came to stop after showing only a few simple examples. So it is difficult to apply to my raw data because the assumptions that were applied to the theory were invalid in real situation. For example, ¡°Introduction to probability and statistics for engineers and scientist, by Sheldon M. Ross¡± is too theoretical to me and the application of theories is biased to the persons who are interested in small data set. Additionally, many books assumed the normal distribution and did not refer how we could test these assumptions. In analyzing the time series, not only is important the data analysis in time domain, but also the analysis in frequency domain. ¡°Applied Statistical time series analysis by Shumway¡± dealt with it. However, ¡°Random data by Bendat and Piersol¡± more will be helpful to the people who deal with time series, want to design statistical filters and to do the statistical tests and need more profound and systematic theories and understanding.

Julius Streicher was one of Hitler's earliest comrades during the Nazi rise to power in the 1920's and 1930's. Streicher helped Hitler gain a foothold in Nuremberg, which helped the Nazi regime consolidate its hold on Germany. Streicher's main role, however, was as a sort of common man's Joseph Goebbels. Streicher was a teacher by trade, and a fairly effective one at that. He had the rare ability to motivate his students by instilling his enthusiasm for any subject into the minds of his pupils. Streicher used this ability later in his duties for the Nazi party. Streicher published the notorious anti-Jewish newspaper Der Sturmer, which pumped out the most strident and hateful propaganda on the "Jewish Problem" for over twenty years. Bytwerk examines how effective Der Sturmer was on the common German, and how the newspaper went about reducing Jews to the status of non-humans. When this status was reached, the result led to the concentration camps and mass murder.
Included in the book are many reproductions from Der Sturmer, most of which are cartoons that present Jews as animals or as evil, deformed creatures bent on the destruction of Germany. Many cartoons attempt to show Jews as a threat to German women or girls, thereby appealing directly to German manhood and nobility. Bytwerk convincingly argues that these cartoons and articles were quite effective in conditioning the German people into a state in which they regarded the Jews as pure evil. As propaganda, Der Sturmer was a masterpiece. Bytwerk points out that while it convinced Germans that Jews were evil, its most important accomplishment was that it created an atmosphere of indifference. Most Germans didn't run out and attack Jews after reading this stuff. What they did do was not stand up when laws began to appear that stripped Jews of their rights. In other words, Der Sturmer convinced most Germans to do nothing to help Jews.
One of the best parts of the book is when Bytwerk examines the history of German anti-Semitic thought. The Nazis were building their particular programs on a foundation that had been created by other authors in the past. This foundation allowed Streicher's propaganda to work much faster and accomplish more in a shorter time. The dislike and distrust were already in place. All Streicher did was to bring it up to date and articulate it in a way that was easy for the common German to understand. Since Der Sturmer was so effective, I disagree with Bytwerk when he states that Streicher was not a bright man. Streicher may have not been a brilliant party organizer, but he certainly accomplished what he set out to do. With all that Streicher got accomplished, and the way he did it, I'd say he was a genius at propaganda, and one who rivaled Joseph Goebbels, who Bytwerk seems to think was Streicher's intellectual "better".
This book is a worthy read, although it is out of print and might be somewhat difficult to find on a local level. Try Amazon.com's search service. Wherever you look, try and pick up a copy. It will be well worth the time.
