A Fantastic Book about Philosophy, Life and, uh, Cartoons
Please do yourself a favor and read this wonderful book. Chuck Jones is an American treasure and a fantastic artist. The Warner Brothers Cartoons were directed to audiences of all ages, they do not talk down to children, nor do they pretentiously preach to adults. Unfortunately, we only seem to recognize as "great" those artists who do these things. If you believe an artist has to be "serious" to be a genius, I hope this book will change your mind! Check out his new book, "Chuck Reducks" too

Oh, to have lived back then!
To read "Chuck Amuck: The Life and Times of an Animated Cartoonist" is to be transported back to the days when Termite Terrace turned out the most popular cartoons the world will ever know. Not only does Chuck (how can we call someone we know so well "Mr. Jones" or just "Jones"?) explain the childhood, adolescence and career life that brought him to where he is, he also takes the reader into that wonderful nether-world in a neglected corner of the Warner Bros. Studios lot where Leon Schlessinger ruled a bunch of underpaid, barely appreciated cartoonists. And they actually LOVED what they were doing! The people who gave the world Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies come to life so vividly, one can almost smell the ink and paint.

Profusely illustrated with doodles, sketches, caricatures and photographs, "Chuck Amuck" is a literary and visual delight. And, as an added bonus, there's even an actual Wile E. Coyote cartoon that you can enjoy without a VCR or a movie projector!

The book's only low point is that the foreword was written by Steven Spielberg, whose "Tiny Toons" and "Animaniacs" are little more than flagrant rip-offs of Chuck's (and Tex Avery's and Bob Clampett's) best material.

As Wile E. Coyote would say "Genius, pure genius"
The world lost an animation genius recently with the death of Chuck Jones. Luckily, there is a book like this that celebrates the animation genius he was. Arguably, Jones was the father of some of the best Warner Brothers cartoons ever made, including "Duck Amuck," "Duck Dogers in the 24th and 1/2 Century," and my personal favorite "What's Opera Doc?" He also is responsible for giving us such great pieces of pop culture as the original "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

Part autobiography, part instruction, part tribute, this book shows us the man behind the screen, or should I say behind the pencil? We often wonder where a genius comes from - Chuck seems to say from anywhere. His mark on the development of the cartoon is undeniable, and monumental. But just as you cannot appreciate art fully until you know about the painter, so it is with Chuck's cartoons. I have a greater appreciation for the work that goes into developing these 8 minute masterpieces. Yes, it's true that Jones gave us some of the clunkers in the 60's as the Warner Brothers studio (and the MGM studio) animation division gasped what seemed to be its last breath. But it's all the more amazing that Chuck could produce such works given what little he had to work with. The world would be poorer were it not for the gives Chuck has given us, including Wile E. Coyote (super genius!),and the Road Runner, Pepe Le Pew, Marvin the Martian and many others. His style was distinctive, his contributions monumental and behind it all, he was a fascinating and talented man. This book stands as a tribute to this genius now that he's no longer with us.

George Isaac's Review
This is one of the best sci-fi books i have read in a long time. It teaches kids that there is no such thing as perfection. There is always a down side to it. I loved it a great deal. of course, my teacher is the author of this book so i had read it before it actually came out. This is a definite can't stop reading it.

My classes love this book!
I teach sixth grade Language Arts and I read this book to my classes. They loved it. They begged for me to keep reading on days when I didn't have time. I have not seen my kids so excited about a book all year long. They loved the characters--especially the grandmother.

A Review of This Side of Paradise
When you read "This Side of Paradise" you expect it to be about some child dreaming. However, when I read this novel I immediatley realized it was a different type of book. As I got further into it, I was absorbed, I couldn't stop reading. I loved this book and greatly enjoyed these characters. The book could be so serious, and then Gram would come in and would make it hilarious. At times I was laughing hysterically, and at others I was simply dumbfounded at what I had just found out. If you enjoy reading about Utopian societies, you would absolutely love this book. Not only was it abou a Utopian society, it had so many different twists and turns, that surprised me. If I had to recommend this book i would recommend it to a young adult audience. As a teenager, I can tell you it is a wonderful book.

Wow, what a masterpiece!
Steven Underhill has captured the innocence, tenderness, and care-free attitudes of brothers Bruce and Seth Hall, fondly here referred to in the book as the Hall twins. For those of us who first fell head over heels for these two in XY Magazine or Underhill's earlier production, "Straight Boys", Underhill leaves little to the viewer's imagination as we watch Seth and Bruce frolick on a grassy lawn in their trademark Hane's tighy-whities or as they are skinny dipping along a secluded river bank. For anyone who appreciates masuline beauty...in duplicate, this hard-cover book is definitely for you.

Summary
'Californian photographer Steven Underhill presents two young gods with radiant physiques - Bruce and Seth the Twins. Playful and intimate moments in pictures full of eroticism. A great work by a master of his craft who gives the viewer a wonderful image of an innocent and inseparable bond.'

Young, uninhibited and erotically provacative!
In this beautifully designed and bound volume of photos, Steven Underhill reveals his love of two young gods with radiant physiognomies - Bruce and Seth the twins. The volume shows them in playful and intimate moments in pictures full of erotic energy photographed over a long period. A great work by a master of his craft that gives the viewer a wonderful image of an inseparable bond.

Horse Shy (The Saddle Club 2)

Emotional
This is the second book in the Saddle Club series which is about three girls who love horses so much they start a club called the Saddle Club, which has only two rules. The first is that the members must be horse-mad, the second is that they must be willing to help each other at any time. The three main characters are Lisa, Stevie and Carole. Stevie is a fun, practical joker who brings a lot of humour into the story line, Lisa is a practical student and Carole is the most horse mad of them all. The story line is that Carole is very much in love with a beautiful black horse called Cobalt. Unfortuantly he belongs to a snob called Veronica DeAngelo and she is not very considerate of him. Then in a terrible aciddent, Cobalt dies and Carole is so upset that she thinks she must give up riding for good so as to not get hurt again. Stevie and Lisa know how much riding means to Carole, and so try to stop her. Read the book to find out what happens next......

The book was very emotoinal and fun to read !
Stevie ,Carole, and Lisa are off on a fun filled overnight camping trip. Then they see Veronica take ajump the wrong way.Max tells her not to do it again. Then Carole goes and spends some time with some relitives. When she returns she finds that Veronica has taken the life of her favorite horse.Carole's about to give up riding forever.I loved the book it was very emotional.

Good, but sad
This was a really good book, but really sad. Carole's favorite horse, a stallion, was accidentely killed by his snobby rich owner, Veronica DiAngelo. Carole is so sad that she thinks that she won't ride ever again. But then she relizes that she loved riding so much that she can't give it up, and when she goes back to the stable, the mare that she ussually rides, is going to foal! This is such a good book!

Fair balanced presentation of Hitchcock-Hayes collaboration
When the auteur myth took root it managed to both change the stature of directors and displace a lot of talented writers. While there's no doubt that Hitchcock is still a giant in cinema, many of the books written about him tend to focus only on Hitch's contribution. DeRosa's book provides fair balance and recognizes writer Joh Michael Hayes' contribution to a fruitful collaboration. The four pictures that Hayes worked on (Rear Window, The Trouble With Harry, To Catch A Thief and the remake of The Man Who Knew Too Much)are all among Hitch's best work as a director. This isn't to suggest that Hitch didn't contribute to story ideas; he would frequently sketch out a general plot but writers like Hayes (or Ernest Lehman to name another strong Hitch collaborator) would be left along to write the script once the basic plot was discussed.

DeRosa knows his stuff and his research is exhaustive. I would have to liked to have seen more storyboard to script comparisons and comments from other writers and directors but that probably would have changed the scope of the book (and the focus). Without tarnishing Hitch's reputation, Writing With Hitchcock makes a strong case for the importance of Hayes contribution to Hitch's film.

After they had a falling out Hitch would frequently dismiss Hayes contributions to his films in print( such as in Truffaut's interview with Hitchcock. Hitch was generally pretty good about recognizing the importance of his collaborators)

Luckily that bitterness can't color the fine work of these well matched collaborators. This book along (with the inteviews Hayes granted for the DVD editions of their four films) finally puts it all into perspective. It also allows one to celebrate the great art and entertainment of Hitch and Hayes.

Chalk one up for the writers!
At last someone has challenged the myth that Hitchcock did everything himself. Not so. He had some very skilled writers whose talents helped make his films so memorable. One of those writers - perhaps the most important - was John Michael Hayes, whose screenplays for Rear Window, To Catch a Thief, Trouble with Harry and the remake of The Man Who Knew Too Much, had a tremendous impact on Hitchcock's films of the fifties, and on the way we view Hitchcock today.

In "Writing With Hitchcock", Steven DeRosa gives Hayes his long overdue credit. Hayes' contributions to each of the films are described in detail, as are the steps taken by the censors to reign things in - to protect audiences from the idea that Cary Grant and Grace Kelly would have premarital relations, or that Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day's boy was kidnapped, are just a couple of examples! Each film is gone over in detail from the writing phase to release, and the reader is given a chance to see the relationship between the writer and director blossom, and then die.

There are lots of anecdotes and a summarizing of both Hitchcock and Hayes' careers after they parted which is very illuminating, especially the potential sequel to Rear Window that Hayes worked on that would have been far more interesting than the Chris Reeve tv version. The final chapter is an analysis of each of the screenplays, and this was especially interesting to me as an aspiring screenwriter. Well worth the price of admission! I only wish it was in hardcover.

DETAILED LOOK AT HOW HITCH AND HAYES DID IT
This book is really amazing. I thought that this was a very detailed book about John Michael Hayes and his rise to being a screenwriter, and how he came to work with Alfred Hitchcock. There are some great photos included that I've NEVER seen anywhere else before from Rear Window, To Catch a Thief, and more. I must say this is the best book that I've read about Hitchcock (and especially the best when it comes to talking about Rear Window). Whether you read this book for educational purposes or just pure enjoyment, you will be glad that you got it. I really recommend this to anyone that may wonder how a movie really comes about....how the REAL men do it!

Excellent characters and intriguing story.
I am a die hard vampyre fan, but often you only find books to terrify, not entertain. By page 15 of this book, I had my husband look up "Rulers of Darkness" so I can get it ordered. I try to stay away from sequels, but not this time!!! I have to read them all!! I'll be sharing this one with my friends and I'm sure I'll read it again.

Excellent Thriller
"Daughter of Darkness" is the second book by Steven Spruill concerning this disfunctional vampire family. It is a medical thriller, a suspenseful vampire horror story and a heartwarming story of a dysfunctional family. The relationships, the centuries of anger and pain, the love that will not die, make this one of the best books I've read in any genre. Spruill gives the reader an emotional ride that they will not soon forget. If you love a great medical thrillers, great vampire books and great stories of undying love, you have found the perfect book. Erma Arthur, Reading Forum Assistant, MS

extreme
This book was a wonderful follow up to "Rulers of Darkness" and well worth the wait. I read this book in one day because I could not put it down. Its a wonderful read, but it left me aching for the 3rd book!

Fixing Elections: The Failure of America's Winner Take All Politics

READ THIS BOOK!!! A real eye opener!
This book is the "Silent Spring" of our political system. It's full of facts and anecdotes that will make you astonished and wondering why everyone is not apalled and talking about these failures of our system and how we can change it. Everyone knows that something is very wrong with our flailing democracy and the people at the helm, but Hill has really exposed the under belly that rarely gets talked about. He is helping us to see how the U. S. electoral system's failure has permeated the very fabric of our policy decisions and lead to citizen non-participation and despair. Each chapter is well written, compelling, eye opening and revelatory. I am still thinking deeply about the implications of Fixing Elections' arguments and know that this is essential information for the future if we are to survive as a democracy.

The most amazing book
I would give it six stars if I could. This is the most insightful book on American politics I have ever read. It transformed how I look at politics in this country. So much of what ails our democracy -- low participation, poor representation, poor quality of campaigns, policy that doesn't reflect what the majority of Americans want, partisan bickering and polarization,on and on -- the author brilliantly shows how it can all be traced back to the Winner Take All political system we use in the U.S. ONe of the most interesting riffs was how much of what we usually attribute to a lack of campaign finance reform -- lack of political competition, or choice for voters, or accountability -- is really more directly impacted by the incentives of the Winner Take All system. Fascinating.

If you read one book on politics this year, make it this one.

An important perspective on modern politics
This book is more correctly described by its subtitle. I consider it a textbook on contemporary political science that presents an important perspective, similar to The Power Game by Hedrick Smith. It's an important read for anyone who cares about democracy in America. There were some spots where the connection between the winner-takes-all method and various ills of the political system seems tenuous. For example, It's not clear to me how the ill effects of polling and other methods used by political consultants would vanish under an alternative voting method. But the overall picture is quite compelling. The winner-takes-all method now reminds me of the 100-ton fungus in Michigan that wasn't discovered until 10 years ago because nobody noticed that the network of roots and shoots was connected, covering 35 acres of land.

There's really not much on actually fixing the system - just a few sentences or paragraphs per chapter. I think that if the arguments for why these problems would go away under a proportional representation method were fleshed out, so we could more clearly see an alternative, I would be more convinced that winner-takes-all is to blame. The author apologizes at the end for running out of space to make these arguments, and doesn't include many references regarding them. So I will be waiting for the sequel.
