Zeeland's Military Trade is the Damron guide for gays who seek authentic straight men. My greatest fear is that this book will continue to be a best seller; and that the streets of my Marine Corps desert oasis in Southern California will become crowded with new competitors for jarhead attention.

The Power Path has become a permanent reference book guiding my practice as a clinical consultant in a residentail and out-patient drug and alcohol treatment program. It is also being read and used by numerous staff including the CEO. This is not a 'one shot' read but a book to be studied and used as a guideline for ethical and successful business and life practices. It is filled with deep insight and knowledge. This is a book about true power.
This book is extremely relevant right now as we are going through a transformation of corporations. Taking the view of the Shaman, which incorporates the more spritual side of the equation creates a balanced path which leads to success not just for the CEO, but for all concerned, employees, shareholders..gee what a concept!!!
Jose and Lena Stevens have studied shamanism with shamans from all over the world. Their ability to take these esoteric concepts and apply them to an organization is really quite brilliant. A corporation is really a tribe and the dynamics for success are the same as in a tribe. Their descriptions of successful groups and their functioning is fascinating. I know for myself it will enhance my experience of working with corporate teams and make things a lot more productive.
Every company needs a medicine man/woman, so give this book to your favorite CEO and buy stock in the company.
Enjoy.
This book is extremely timely given the current down-turn of our economy (which is going to get a lot worse before it gets better), and the old paradigms of business (which truly must undergo a transformation--see another book, The Cultural Creatives by Paul Ray and S. Anderson).
The Power Path is definitely not a book on puff-ball New Age spirituality. It pulls no punches, it is gritty and real, but is also astonshing in its capacity to convey the terrain of power and our relationship with it. This is no beating around the bush writing--pragmatic and practical, the teachings and ideas are deeply informed by their apprenticeship with Huichol shamans (they obviously paid attention)--but the ideas in The Power Path are also tested, refined, and applied in the very real domain of corporations where the issues of power are just as tangible and real as the issues of power a shaman faces in his or her training, and in his or her practice and service throughout life.
In my estimation The Power Path is one of the freshest articulations of the shamanic theory about power, energy, thought, and intention, all components that determine our own determination of our own destiny. What is extremely hopeful, I think, is the potential that these central teachings to the shamanic life at large can revolutionize the way we do business, the way we lead, the way we govern.

The consolation of man's enduring relationship with nature is exquisitely described here. Bodio deserves recognition as New Mexico's champion author, as his friend, Annie Proux has become for Wyoming. You will read this book over and over, and find new insights each time.

Each chapter covers a different aspect of Hindu worship in India: worship in the home, with one's community, at a temple, etc. The book does not so much explain Hinduism as it does the way Hindus approach their faith.
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Indian culture or Hinduism. It's a fascinating read.
This is one of the few books that explain well to the western audience the whats and whys of the oldest religion in the world. It focuses on the approach of common Hindu folks to their religion and how it enhances their day-to-day life. Author starts with some basic concepts and then goes on to draw pen-pictures of daily lives of devout Hindus that, at least in the religious sense, defy modernization in contemporary India. The text aided by vivid pictures fires the imagination and magically transports the reader to India. The deep passion of the author is clearly reflected in the knowledgeable text. Hinduism is a very flexible religion, which is primarily the reason it has survived thousands of years. It is perfectly acceptable to practice faith in ways different from those of ancestors, provided certain basic tenets are kept in mind. The approach to religion may vary by region, by economic status, or caste but the important thing to note that diversity is acceptable.
Author has presented the approach to Hinduism in rural India or that practiced by lower income strata of the society, which comprises of a significant number of Indian Hindus. This approach is different from that practiced by urban Hindus or those in middle or upper income class. This book is highly recommended to all who have interest in religion, those who have an unquenchable thirst for anything Indian and even practicing Hindus.

There are a couple of odd things about it, though. Many of the articles cover topics that concern current events, with articles on recent celebrities like Jerry Seifeld and companies like Microsoft. Unfortunately, such current topics must come at the expense of other less current topics. This excessive concentration on current topics could make the book date quite rapidly.
Also, many of the articles have been lifted straight from the Encyclopedia Britannica. This would not have been a problem if the editors had taken advantage of the opportunity to revise the articles to bring them up to date, but unfortunately they didn't do so in many cases. The net result of these two editorial decisions is to give the book a straight-from-the-headlines feel for one article, and then an ancient feel for the next.
Created in cooperation with Encyclopedia Britannica as well as a host of academic consultants, Merriam Webster's Collegiate Encyclopedia is a one volume treasure of information. It holds more than 25,000 entries covering every facet of scholarship and discipline, such as the arts, business, geography, history, literature, medicine, philosophy, pop culture, religion, science, technology, and up to the minute info regarding computers.
Pursuing an area of interest is easy with alphabetically sequenced listings, and 70,000 cross references which lead to additional data.
A pronunciation guide with some 10,000 words increases fluency and self-confidence.
Graphics heighten interest with photographs, maps, diagrams, and tables, thereby enriching awareness as well as learning.
True to its reputation of producing high quality reference materials Merriam-Webster again offers a first-rate volume.

"One evening, a group of friends and I were having dinner at a local restaurant. Our waiter was very distracted and he appeared to be agitated and depressed. He was abrupt, slow and unfriendly. As a result, our service left a great deal to be desired. Since I wanted to have an enjoyable evening, I decided to "talk funny" to him in order to help him feel better.
As he walked by our table holding a coffee pot, I touched his arm and said, "I'm sorry that you forgot that special night ... with that special person ... those exciting things that happened ... those very warm feelings that would embarrass you to talk about ... since we are all strangers."
For a moment his face went blank; he looked up to his left; his face then lift up and he said, "How do you know about that?" He then smiled and began to laugh, and his whole attitude changed as if by magic. He said, "Wow. that was some night. I don't know how you know about it."
The next time he came to our table, I said to him, "Wasn't it simply amazing that when you remember those happy, warm feelings, your attitude continues to change, and you continue to feel even better?"
We received a delightful service throughout the rest of the evening. What was even nicer, was that as we left he told us that we were one of the nicest parties he had ever waited on. He also asked us to be sure and ask for him whenever we returned.
Now, I have absolutely no idea as to what he hallucinated, but my communication resulted in his going back into his own history. He then found an experience that filled in the blanks, and that memory helped him to change his whole attitude in a matter of seconds. Of course, there's no such thing as hypnosis, and if there is, he should have gone deeper and deeper into a trance."
