One of my favorites
Out of quite a few books about Aikido that I own this is the one I return to most often. What sets it apart from other books is the demonstration of fundamental aikido techniques both with and without bokken. It concentrates on a small, but representative number of techniques. These are explained very well. Quality counts more than quantity. I have used the book to devise training lessons.

Presents Aikido very well
This book was actually recommended to me by a black-belt, Aikido student and I have never regretted it's purchase. I tend to study sword-styles, and Aikido offers several movements based on sword-fighting principals (as well as actual sword-fighting based on old samurai movements).

It also has a bit on the history of Aikido, breathing, meditation, the life of Ueshiba Morihei (the founder of Aikido) and a glossary of Japanese terms. The rest of the book is mostly dedicated to movements. All in all, this is a must-have for anyone even remotely interested in Aikido.

Great book - Great Aikidoka
It's by far one of the best books i've ever read on Aikido. This books shows all the basics of classique aikido.

Great book with very nice pictures.

A true joy!
My initial reaction to The Art of Star Trek and it's hefty price was skepticism. Once I did purchase it and start running through it, the price could've been twice and I still would've bought this gem. The Art of Star Trek is a pure celebration of everything that Star Trek is and was all the way through it's publication date. It includes articles from the very beginning to the lastest on Voyager and Star Trek Generations. The pictures and drawings are stunning to say the least. This is a book you'll definitely want to add to your collection if you haven't already.

Like a visit to the ultimate "Trek" museum
"The Art of Star Trek," by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, is to date the ultimate "coffee table" book for devoted Star Trek fans. This book, which was published in 1995, covers all aspects of "Trek" history up until its publication date. Through text and plentiful illustrations, the book celebrates the visual artistry that has been such an essential component of the "Trek" phenomenon.

The book deals with each of the specific series from the original until "Voyager," including both the often neglected animated series and the aborted "Phase II" series of the mid-1970s. All films from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" to "Star Trek Generations" are also covered.

The amount and quality of items in this visual "museum" are astounding. There are behind-the-scenes photos, concept drawings, photos of models, prosthetic makeup designs, storyboards, movie posters from around the world, closeup shots of props, and more. Particularly interesting were the shots of certain props and aliens which were barely seen in fleeting shots, but which represent great imagination and artistry.

Also noteworthy are the drawings which document the evolution of both the original series "Enterprise" and the "Next Generation" ship. I was fascinated by the concept drawings of possible "Enterprises" for the aborted "Phase II" series, as well as by the rejected new uniforms for the first "Next Generation" feature film.

The concise but clear text is a good match for the wealth of glorious, full-color photographs. This book is, from start to finish, a visual feast for "Trek" fans.

Food for the fertile imagination...
How do you give five stars to "Maus: A Survivor's Tale" and then 5 stars to "The Art of Star Trek"? The two books are impossible to compare. Let me just say they both are excellent, and accomplish with great skill what they set out to accomplish.

Growing up, Star Trek was one of the things that inspired me to draw. The voyages of Captain Kirk and the Enterprise crew powered my imagination as certainly as antimatter reactions power Starfleet vessels. This ship, her captain, and the stories that they told took an impressionable kid and called him towards adventure. I drew Star Trek pictures, I made communicators out of cardboard, and I wanted to BE Captain Kirk.

The Art of Star Trek captures just that feel. For me, the visual part of this show has always been the critical component. With large, lush photographs, behind-the-scenes sketches, and a ton of pages, this is one of my favorite books, and one I page through time and time again.

Very informative and easy to read.
Foaling horses is definetly a very long process especially if you intend on being there for the whole delivery. This book explains what to look for and what will happen during the foaling process. It also tells what to expect and the musts for after delivery. It was very easy to read and understand by real people. I drag it out for each foaling I attend even though I have read and re-read it more than once.

Clear, reassuring information.
When my mare was near term this was the one book that I had with me at all times. Where other authors of foaling books tend to emphasize foaling horrors and disasters, Theresa Jones emphasizes what is normal. She makes you very aware of what can go wrong, and gives ample instruction on how to recognize an emergency or abnormal situation, but she does it in a way that helps you remain confident rather than helpless.

Excellent in-depth common sense advice.
Theresa Jones has created a wonderful, easy to read and understand manual that is a must for the first time or experienced horse breeder. The book is accurate, written so it is very understandable by the layman, yet full of good medical advice and knowledge. To supplement the book Theresa Jones provides an advice column online to answer specific problems encountered in foaling.

almost perfect
Covers a wide array of PI subjects and goes into adequate detail on most. Re-inforces his points with good stories from his experiences that make the book enjoyable as well as informative. I wish he had included more stories and also product & brand recommendations and more resources. Great book. Nice guy, met him at a book signing in Jacksonville, FL

One of the best!
As an experienced Private Investigator in the State of Idaho I am always looking for reading material associated with my profession. More than a few associates recommended "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Private Investigating" but, I shied away because of the title. I've always considered myself an experienced professional not a newbie so I let my pride get in the way. Well, after a few more associates recommended the book I had to order it to see for myself if it was as good as everyone said. I must say I am very impressed. Lots of information laid out in such a way that anyone from beginner to experienced can comprehend. My suggestion whether you are an experienced investigator or just starting out is to read this book from front to back!

Title: The Complete Idiot's Guide to Private Investigating

Author: Steven Kerry Brown

Data: Alpha, 384 pps. [$$$] soft-cover

Review by Michael Pakenham

Brown, an experienced professional PI with offices in Ponte Vedra Beach and St. Augustine, urges that this book really could guide the reader into a career. But its greatest charm - and I suspect its main utility - is as a truly entertaining, briskly presented, rundown on how the business is conducted. Or at least how it is done by Brown. One of the 24 topical chapters: "Moving Surveillance: How best to perform one-man and two-man moving surveillances, anticipating your subject's next move, communication between units, and dealing with stoplights."

The others involve public-records checking, access to ostensibly confidential information, electronic devices and their use, tracing missing or elusive persons. Any armchair gumshoe will find the details entertaining - sometimes debatable, often provocative.

Delicious Entertainment!
Look out Amelia Bedelia! Big Brown Rooster and friends are cooking strawberry shortcake and the misunderstandings abound! Literal interpretations and great illustrations make this an extremely entertaining picture book. Read the book, create the shortcake, and eat it! The recipe included in the text is fantastic.

outrageous animation !
The animal's expressions are SO animated that it is a visual DELIGHT as well as a fun read ! What a treat !

My 3 and 4 year-olds' favorite - educational and fun!
This is a great book that has lots of depth. My three year old loves the repetition and the characterisation, without realizing he's learning concepts and facts about food and cooking. It's clearly their favorite book.

Corporate Image Management: A Marketing Discipline for the 21st Century
Published in Paperback by Butterworth-Heinemann (1999)
Author: Steven Howard
Amazon base price: $27.95
Average review score:

An approach for competitive distinction
One of the most interesting book i have read about the importance of corporate identity. It is absolutely important to know how to build a good identity and how to communicate the same to the client.

I'm 100% accurate that in the next years to come, identity, image, communication will be the most important assets in guatemalan companies.

Excellent! A 'how to' approach to the new paradigm
The new paradigm being promoted by Howard (and an increasing number of others in the field) is the view of Corporate Image as a completely integrated discipline - reaching far beyond the traditional (logo/font/colours/packaging etc) design approach. It's summed up in the quote, 'if it touches the consumer it's a Corporate Image issue'.

The book goes on to provide, along with a host of case studies and examples, practical steps to performing everything from an initial audit to executing a full Corporate Image program. Includes check-lists, best-practice suggestions, and some serious points on change management that must also be heeded if any such programme is to succeed!

I'll use this book for years to come as a reference and guide.

This is an important and useful book.
Chinese firms have started to take care of CI. This book will guide them into 21th.

The Bahamas Fly-Fishing Guide
Published in Hardcover by Lyons Press (1999)

Bahamas Flyfishing Bible
This is not only the definitive flyfishing guide to the Bahamas, but also (i) a very insightful book on logistics and non-fishing pursuits on the islands; and (ii) one of the finest fishing guides written for any area in the world, which is an especially great accomplishment given the span of the area. Read to plan, or just read to dream. Essential for anyone deciding on which island to go to, and which areas to fish. My only complaint? -- that I personally wasn't able to help research this book by visiting/fishing all areas covered.

The Bahamas Fly-Fishing Guide
I have traveled to the Bahamas on several ocassions on buisness as well as pleasure (fishing!). Prior to going and while I'm there, this book has provided valuable information and suggestions. Great refrence book!

Awesome even for non fishers
I bought this for my boyfriend who is a fishing freak for our trip to the Bahamas. I think I had more fun reading it than he did. These folks give so much information about the islands that I think it is a MUST for fishing widows and widowers. It changed our plans as to where to go and what to do. We fished and enjoyed other parts of the islands. I laminated the cover cause we wore it out.

King of Scarescows
Culbert is an imaginative, innovative, descriptive writer. The book is full of vivid images that fill the readers mind. It was earthy, real, and wonderful all in one. I would recommend it.

tour de force
In the spirit of the Beats, Culbert manages to pull off two great stories here, really remarkable prose and full of disturbing imagery that'll make you feel like you're ready to hit the road and meet some strange and interesting people. Check it out. Good stuff.

As a student of the author: Dr. Steven Culbert.
As a student of Dr. Steven Culberts', I studied Zen Buddhist influences on Japanese Corporate Culture. And in so doing, I learned the true meaning of Dr. Culberts' work--the beauty in nature, the predictable and baffling nature of humans. Dr. Culberts' books read like fine poetry and thoughtful philosophy tightly wrapped into the cacoon of humanity. Our deepest emotions and most unspoken desires are revealed in a disarming fashion. You would do well to read his work. Sincerely, James Giries

a funny book for kids under 12
This book, "The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash," is a great book for young readers. This book is both funny and interesting in the minds of the little ones. It can also be used for a book for readers who have just learned to read. This book is about a field trip to a farm with an elementary school grade. It starts off when they have just got home and goes through the trip backwards. The illustration are used great to show what is being said when the family is talking. A parent with the child who wants to read, this is a must have book.

Fond memories down on the farm
It's been a long while since I read this book and I can still remember the day I lost it babysitting many years ago, but the vividness of both the unique ceativity of the author and the fresh, discriptive illustrations are still etched in my memory. The tale of the most eventful school excursion in history will entertain children of all ages(!). Highly recommended, both for concept and quality. Will definately capture the imagination of children. Can't believe I'm now buying it again for my niece!

A wonderful Story!
This is a remarkable book and my all time favorite children's book. The illustrations are exceptional making the entire story seen and come to life. All three of my children have this story memorized, as it is mother's favorite. Then in the first grade the reading book their class used has this story in it. This is silly, fun, a wonderful picture book for the young, and a great beginning reading book for the child just learning to read. Also a very delightful book for the reading parent, you will laugh, as the story is set so matter of fact as the mother is asking her daughter how her field trip went at school. A truly wonderful book!

The Everlasting: Book of the Unliving Roleplaying Game (Softcover)

Greating Roleplaying Game
The Everlasting is a great game for both beginning roleplayers and those playing since time began. There is not much you can't do with this game, and you can literally use it for many different kinds of gaming adventures from the medival dungeon crawl to a modern day war with a group of fallen angels. This game literally has everything.

An extremely well done, fun and just flat out cool game
Well, its about time someone did a good modern fantasy RPG. Good ol' Steve Brown really pulled something out of his hat this time. The Everlasting combines all the interesting things of the mythology of many different cultures, mixes them with some straight up fantasy and tosses in a very well-thought out, flexible game system to come up with a truly great game. You can play close to whatever you want, and the system and setting is so flexible you can go and do close to anything(hey, we've done some crazy stuff in our campaigns). Maybe I'm biased because I've been buying comics and Magic cards from Steve for years, but this game rocks. It is nifty. Buy the Game. ;)

Not bad(pretty damn good actually) from Tzimisce13@aol.com
First off, it wasn't released in 1990. It was 1998. The Everlasting books are great (they just came out with Book of the Light). There are very few things I don't like about it. It is almost as if its creators made it around the idea of Live-action Roleplaying. In fact, one of its creators talks about being inspired by a speech made by Mark-Rein Hagen(White Wolf). It provides numerous different systems and even has personality traits to keep players in line with their characters. In fact, the only real complaint I have about it is that so far, VESI has only released 2 of The Everlasting's 4 Foundation Books. When all the foundation books have been released there will be character rules to play almost any creature there is. Ghuls, Vampires, Revenants, Dragons, Angels, Wer, Faeries, Orcs, Dead souls, Reanimates, Demons, and more.
