Sensitively Breaking Silence
In 1996, an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland at Baltimore School of Social Work co-founded the International Paruresis Association (IPA). That professor, Steve Soifer, is also a co-author of this book. It is the first monograph on Paruresis or Shy Bladder Syndrome: the inability to urinate in a public restroom or in the presence of others....Classified as a social phobia in DSM-IV-TR (300.23), it is associated with impairment in multiple functional domains: employment, education, and social relationships. This debilitating condition thrives in a climate of shame and secrecy (on the part of paruretics) and ignorance (by health and mental health care providers). This deceptively slim book may help you identify paruresis in yourself, a loved one, or a client/patient. One section helps the reader rule out other conditions (pp.16-18). The brain-body connection is clearly described in Chapter Two, and includes both a diagram of the human urinary system and a chart of the human nervous system. The authors present a ten-step approach for Graduated Exposure Therapy, the treatment of choice at present. Appendices include a literature review, a synopsis of "the evolution of the bathroom and its impact on paruresis", and resources. A seven page bibliography is included. There is no index, and it is hoped that future editions will remedy this. This thoughtful, sensitive book breaks the silence which has hitherto dominated the subject. For that, and for the prospect of relief it holds for over 17 million sufferers, we may all be grateful.

Excellent and Desperately Needed!
As social phobia is finally being recognized by the public and professionals alike as a serious condition, affecting nearly 20 million in the US alone, so is avoidant paruresis - one painful, disabling, and embarrassing manifestation of it. As one who suffered from both for years, I can tell you this book provides you with everything you need to know to overcome this form of performance anxiety.

Starting with what "bashful bladder syndrome" is, it takes the reader through its causes, different treatment approaches, what to expect from the medical community, and how to gain support from family, intimates, and friends. It has one chapter on the application of the Americans with Disabilities Act to mandatory drug testing and another on the evolution of the bathroom and its effect on avoidant paruresis which makes for fascinating reading.

This breakthrough book gives hope to people worldwide who live restricted lives because of this debilitating human affliction. It is essential reading for medical and mental health professionals, sufferers, and their family and friends!

Wish I Could Give it 6 Stars
Raise a gallon jug of Spring Water and toast the best (and only?) book on Shy Bladder Syndrome to ever hit the shelves!!!

If you ever thought that you were alone and that no one else in the world suffered from a shy bladder - or paruresis, this book is for you. After living with this problem since junior high, I was amazed at how much information this book book contained on how to finally get your life back to normal.

The nine chapters contained in this book are well written in easy to understand language that is a must read for anyone that suffers from paruresis. Starting with a brief overview of how the mind and bladder work (or don't work), this book leads you down a carefully laid path that shows how to regain control of your life.

Filled with true stories and first hand accounts from real life paruretic's, this book puts a very human face on something that is usually shrouded in secrecy and shame. If nothing else, simply reading this book will make anyone living with paruresis feel human again -- and not so alone. Thousands of people will read these stories only to be amazed at how similar their situation is to those in the book.

The best part, however, is that this book offers a successful plan to overcome paruresis that has been tested and successfully used in workshops around the world. After using the methods in this book, I've seen a dramatic improvement in my ability to use public restrooms with success.

If you're reading this review, you probably need this book or know someone that could benefit greatly from its priceless advice. Get this book...get it now...get on with life!

Looks like a plan !!!

Simplifing A Complex Field Through A Consistent Approach
Having read the reviews thus far, I can't find anything I disagree with. It's the best technical text I've ever read. Many of the strengths have been mentioned already: intuitive approach, clear and concise, wide range of interesting illustrative examples, etc.

In addition, the consistent use and discussion of trajectories, phase space, stable points, etc. throughout the entire text allows the reader to incrementally build from each previous lesson. Though other books on nonlinear dynamics use these same tools, the vivid explanations and repetitions with incremental differences greatly enhanced the comprehensibility of these topics. I especially appreciate these consistent methods applied to the consolidation of the material in this text after reading books and papers from various authors using different jargon and methods of illustrating the same concepts.

Great book
It is an absolutely marvelous text. I was looking for a text which introduced nonlinear dynamics and all its interesting applications to professors and scientists whose common background included only 1 year of calculus. All I could find was higher level math books, which for the most part were very boring as they got lost in an orgy of math. This text introduces concepts using an intuitive, graphical approach. The mathematics is rigorous, but boring details are avoided. There are fantastic examples in all areas of science. I have often noted that there are many science texts but far too few good ones. This is a great one.

Great intro to nonlinear dynamics with excellent examples
This book is an excellent introductory graduate level text on nonlinear dynamics for those who wish to understand the basic concepts before seeing the mathematical rigor at the heart of the subject. Strogatz avoids getting caught up in mathematical nuances which often cloud the big picture for non-math students, and thereby clearly impresses upon the reader the essence of nonlinear dynamics, eventually building up to chaos. The examples and problems are truly unique and inspiring. This book is an excellent starting place for someone who knows little or nothing about nonlinear dynamics but has done some basic work with linear differential equations and linear algebra.

Good book for the beginning consultant
Like a lot of underpaid, underappreciated network admins, I'm looking at going out on my own as a consultant. This is one of the few books available on network or computer consulting, but it's the best one I've read so far. I've bounced the ideas off of relatives and friends that are small business owners, and they generally agree with Matt.

My biggest question is: How do you evaluate the competance of subcontractors?

When you're just starting out, picking a bad subcontractor can torpedo your business before it gets off the ground. How does he work around that problem?

I would also like to see more information on the web hosting/e-commerce field from the small business perspective.

Those two questions are the only reasons that I've downgraded this book from five stars. Aside from that, I highly recommend it.

Serf to Surfer
If your not currently an independent Network Consultant and you have ever dreamed of breaking those 9-5 chains, this book is for you. If you have already broken those chains and are looking for additional good advice, this too is a great book for you! Matthew Strebe obviously speaks from experience. His open honesty is not only on the money, he made me laugh out loud as it seems we have shared many of the same joy's and agony of going it alone. I highly suggest this book to anyone in the field as it offers excellent and accurate advice in the crazy field we are in. This is a must read. GREAT JOB Mr Strebe!

FINALLY A BOOK WRITTEN FOR PEOPLE THAT AREN'T ALREADY THERE!
I purchased this book because I was considering becoming a network consultant. I read the book because now I AM going to become a network consultant!

Mr. Strebe's experiences are laid out like a guideline for all of us to follow, including both the shining positive examples of how to do it right and the embarrassing mistakes to avoid.

Mr. Strebe's writing is both easily understood and absolutely entertaining... And best of all, it's spot-on!

If you are any kind of technology consultant or you are contemplating being one, READ THIS BOOK!

Get up to speed with this book.
The Filmmaker's Handbook is a comprehensive guide to the art & science of filmmaking. Though it is currently falling abit behind with it's coverage of digital technology, as this is moving so fast it's hard for any book to stay current.

It has a lot of excellent information though, and goes into detail many other books lack. It's useful as a reference guide, and not so dry that it doesn't make an interesting read. If you are studying film, or want to get into the industry this book is a must have.

Fantastic Filmaking 101
I'm getting into film production but don't have time to attend a real film school. And I'm basically interested in the mechanics of filmmaking - so this book The Filmmkaer's Handbook is perfect.

It gets down to all the basics of filmmaking. If you want to know what a line producer does, how light meters work and the ratio of film stock to projection, this is the book for you.

It's thick but easy to read with nice B&W illustrations. As a novice and somebody who wants to know how a movie is made this book is perfect. I was really impressed by how simple and to the point this book was on the mechanics and made it an easy read. I will keep in hand at all times for reference as well!

Very well done and exactly what I was looking for in a filmmaking book!

For the beginner and the proffesional, this book has it all!
As an aspiring young filmmaker, the first thing I was told to do was go out and get a copy of the Filmmaker's Handbook. Imagine my surprise when I found out that the book had been updated in March of 1999, and that now it included all kinds of information about the digital age. I have learned so much from this book. The book goes over the entire film process, and does it in a straight-forward manner. It is a great start for beginners, yet it includes a rich amount of information for the professional. Anyone who has ever thought about a career in film really needs to get a copy of this book. Written in a manner that neither patronizes nor confuses the reader, the Filmmaker's Handbook is the best book I have skimmed or read on film, and believe me, I've looked at a lot.

Possibly the best book I've ever read....

There are some stories that work on many levels; this is one of them. Just the idea is great: a murder mystery set in a futuristic theme park. Add to this that many people come to the park to physically role play an intense adventure, and you've got tons of elements to deal with--making for a rich story environment.

Add once more to this: a wide variety of detailed characters, including social outcasts, an intelligent thief, a slick security officer, and some "doing it for the dollars" adventure designers and you've got a tale that is simply incredible.

I heartily recommend this book and it's sequels (particularly The California Voodoo Game) to any reader--regardless of what genre they enjoy. I just wish that Niven and Barnes would write another...

An old favorite
DREAM PARK is a favorite book of mine- though it's hardly a true literary classic, it's a remarkable achievement in the "pop" fiction world. Here is a high-tech thriller that's not just exciting but thoughtful, detailed, empathetic and charming. It's a little epic that's more rewarding than it looks.

The setting is Dream Park, a futuristic fantasy theme park full of holographic attractions and the latest in VR technology. A team of players enters the South Seas Treasure Game, one of the Park's frequent live-action high-endurance fantasy role-playing spectaculars, facing off against the diabolical designs of Gamemaster Richard Lopez. All's fun and games until a Park security guard is murdered, a valuable research property stolen, and all evidence points to someone inside the game. Security chief Alex Griffin goes undercover into the game to unmask the culprit. Unfortunately for him, Lopez believes in fair play, and if the Griffin wants to stay in the game long enough to catch the criminal he'll have to overcome the same obstacles as the rest of the team.

Dream Park is in and of itself a fantastic setting, with enough combination of whimsy and high-tech that I wished I could go (and I'm probably not the only one.) What makes the plot work so well is the combination of the mystery-thriller element with the high fantasy adventure of the Game. The players in this game are just as serious about winning as Griffin is about solving his case- there are no prizes at stake, no salaries paid, it's a matter of them doing their best. Their dedication is actually quite touching, and the descriptions of the adventure are so vivid that they're impossible to separate from the "reality" of the Park. It's not a fearful "has technology gone too far" attitude that prevails here (unlike the similar film WESTWORLD), but an appreciation of fantasy and imagination. It helps that the game's plot is in itself intriguing and original, centering around the magic of the Melanesian "cargo cults", and the recovery of a powerful WWII artifact at stake. There are monsters, zombies, and even a riddle contest with a Melanesian god. There's a lot to digest, but it all moves at a brisk and absorbing pace.

On top of it all, though, what makes this book so much fun is its characters. Niven and Barnes have filled the story with people who are real, vibrant, sympathetic, complicated, and compelling. There's veteran gaming couple Ollie Norliss and Gwen Ryder, the diminuitive, quirky but tough and lovable Mary Martha Corbett (Mary-Em for short, pardon the pun), bewildered novice Tony McWhirter, "game groupie" Janet who appears in the game as a maiden in distress, dedicated second-stringer Holly Frost, and the near-obsessed team leader Chester Henderson. And that's just skimming the surface- almost every character is fascinating.

Is it a perfect book? I suppose not, but it's practically perfect for what it is. It's a sophisticated page turner, and Niven and Barnes could teach Crichton or Clancy a thing or two.

Really Great Book
This is seriously one of the greatest books i have ever read.

Seeing how I LOVE RPGs and role playing a character, feeling as you are another person, in another world, I always thought 'Man, it would be so cool if you could do it in real life.' I think it's obvious why I loved this book!

In 'Dream Park', Dream Park is a theme park...but not your ordinary theme park. Sporting technology we can only dream of, such as holograms, Dream Park revolves around it's main attraction: the Games. Players represent a character, may it be a Thief, a Warrior, a Magic User- and use real or holographic weapons against hologram monsters and living dead, mixed with actors such as the female sacrifice and the guide. However, 'It's all fun and games until...' a Dream Park employee is murdered, and all clues point to a game member. 'Griffin', head of Dream Park security must enter the game and try to figure out whodunnit while trying to not get beheaded by zombies, birds, and other Game creatures. I HIGHLY reccomend this book to anyone who has played RPGs or likes role-playing, but I think others would like it as well. This book kept me guessing to the end as far as the mystery went, and the characters were fun, enjoyable, realistic, and sometimes not-so-nice. (Draeger, anyone?)

A true delight
Mr. Rabbit, sore from his loss in that race with Mr. Turtle, is a bit down on his luck. So, he strikes a bargain with Mr. Bear.

The rabbit family will plant and harvest crops on Mr. Bear's land and split the proceeds 50/50.

"Tops or bottoms," Mr. Rabbit asks.

Whether the crop is corn, potatoes, or lettuce - Mr. Bear just doesn't seem to "pick" the right half.

This is a great story - for everyone!!

Janet Stevens' illustrations tell a story all their own. Simply wonderful!

The book opens top to bottom (instead of left to right) to re-inforce the idea of "tops and bottoms".

I definitely reccomend this book - it's a true winner!!

A new classic - well worth buying!!
It seems Mr. Rabbit is in a bit of a fix. After losing that race to Turtle, he's in a bit of a financial jam. So, he goes to Bear and makes a deal.

The Rabbit family will plant and harvest the crops on Bear's land. Rabbit will split the crops with Bear 50/50. All Bear has to do is decide which half - tops or bottoms - he wants.

Unfortunately, whether the crop is potatoes, lettuce, corn, or radishes, Bear keeps picking the "wrong half".

This is a hillarious story that kids of all ages will appreciate. For visual interest, the book is designed to flip from top to bottom (as opposed from left to right).

Janet Stevens' artwork alone is worth the cost of the book!

Enjoy!

A delightful trickster story.
This children's book is a retelling of an African-American folktale about a lazy bear and an industrious rabbit, a trickster, who grows different crops on the bear's land. Sometimes the bear wants the top of the crops while the hare takes the bottoms. Other times the bear demands the bottoms. Each time, the hare grows a crop which makes him the "winner" in the deal. The book was a 1996 Caldecott Honor book (i.e., a runner-up to the Medal winner) for best illustrations in a book for children.

When the Lion Feeds

When the Lion Feeds
Wilbur Smith is an incredible historical fiction writer. I have read most of his books this summer, leaping from one to the next. I read all I could buy, then I used the library system to get more including this book: When the Lion Feeds. I knew about the Courtney brothers from other books, but never knew the details of their young lives and experiences until this one. I frankly feel like I am part of the family. From the generations that go back to the 17th century to the current time in South Africa or England, Wilbur brings together intrigue with this family and others (such as Ballintyne {sp})with social issues of the Black, Brown and white folks of Africa. I am his greatest fan. Why is my review lower for this book? Only that it is his first and he is so much better the more he writes. I encourage others to read him; you will be delighted!

The dark mysterious continent
When the Lion Feeds was truely a thrilling and realistic book. I grew up in South Africa and when I want to remember I read the wonderful stories Wilbur Smith has written. I have grown very fond of the Courtney Saga. Each character draws me into all the excitement that Africa has to offer. Sean Courtney who is the hero in this novel starts an historical journey through the African Bush. Almost all of Wilbur Smith's books show the beauty and mysteries that the the dark continent has to offer. When reading this novel I remember what it is like to appreciate such a marvelous landscape with all its treasures. Great reading filled with history and excitement.

The story of Sean Courtney, the original "Great White Hunter
The first book in Wilbur Smith's compelling saga of the Courtney family. It starts with the adventures of Sean Courtney, the original "Great White Hunter" in early Africa. Somewhat of a vagabond, we follow this irrisistable character through his journeys of self discovery, and his founding of what will later become the Courtney Dynasty. The sibling rivalry that starts as a tragic accident, becomes a heartwrenching legacy for future generations. The conflict between two brothers echoes the conflict between English and Afrikaans, between Black and White, between Hunter and Hunted, between Weak and Strong. It is a metaphor for the tragedy and lost love of Africa Herself. Its is the cornerstone of Wilbur Smith's writing, and makes every future publication all the more compelling and unique. Every element of a truly great novel is present, and after reading it you are bound to become a lifelong fan. Wilbur Smith is one of the greatest writers on the African condition. .Each new publication is eagerly awaited by his fans, and a Best Seller even before the first copy is sold.

Memories of Midnight Review
An excellent sequel to "The Other Side of Midnight." If you've read that book before, yep, there's more to excitement to come. If you haven't read the book before, I suggest you read it before you read this book. In short, this is another great book from Sidney Sheldon.

Another sizzling shocker!
The first Sidney Sheldon book I read was "Master of the Game". It is still my favorite, but I really love "The Other Side of Midnight", and its sequel, "Memories of Midnight". You don't HAVE to read "The Other Side..." first in order to enjoy this book, "Memories..", but it would help to read both to get the full effect! "Memories of Midnight" will keep you reading way into the wee hours, so forget about starting this book if you have a paper to write or a job deadline you must pull off! This is a wonderfully fast paced, suspenseful read. Like I said, to get the full effect, you should read "The Other Side of Midnight" first and then this one! Enjoy!

excellent reading
Sidney definitely put a good deal into that book. I've just read it for the fifth time and I'm still raving. The suspense is woven through the story so that you cant stop turning the pages. Sheldon did an immensely entertaining job of connecting the two novels and he deserves the five star rating!

The Scientist & Engineer's Guide to Digital Signal Processing
Published in Hardcover by California Technical Pub (1997)
Author: Steven W. Smith
Amazon base price: $64.00
Used price: $51.00
Average review score:

Very practical and complete, easy to understand
It takes an expert to be able to explain a complicated subject, and Steve Smith is one of those rare experts.

I had no previous experience with signal processing. Within a week of reading this book, I was able to write FFTs, high pass, low pass, and windowed sinc filters in C.

As a bonus, his clear description of convolution, complex numbers, Fourier transform, Laplace transform and Z transform made them all "click".

The only other book I've read that has been able to explain a complicated subject with this level of clarity is Richard Feynman's Physics Lecture series.

Thanks Steve!

An Amazing Book
The author promises at the beginning of the book to explain all DSP concepts without using anything else then elementry math. He has succeeded in doing that from page one to the last one!. Every subject in DSP, no matter how mathematically complex, is described here with clarity that can not be found elsewhere. The explanation about FFT, laplace and Z-Transorm are awesome. It's amazing how subjects as complex as these are explained in plain english that everyone can understand. Also other subjects like neural networks and compression are explained in the most clear way I've seen in any book. An Amazing job. Buy it Now!.

DSP revisited
I have never come across a DSP text as simple and comprehensive as this. The author has command over the principles that enables him to introduce the basic concepts without the mathematical jargon. The whole book has no more than ten equations. The author relies on graphical methods to put across the concepts, rather than using the mathematical jargon. If you are beginner, novice or an expert, this book is a must read.
