The Meters of Greek and Latin Poetry

best available text on meter for Latin, good for Greek too
This is one of the only elementary texts I've found that explains Latin meter correctly and from first principles. Handbooks of Greek meter often treat Latin in a 2-page appendix, saying little more than "The Romans borrowed all these meters." This book, on the other hand, is half Latin and half Greek, and works equally well for students starting from either language. The Latin aeolic meters are explained in terms of the glyconic, not in terms of "feet" as so many books do; this makes it easier to see how aeolic meters work and facilitates learning the Greek versions later. The meters of Plautus and Terence are explained, but saturnians are only briefly mentioned. The student of Greek is also well served by West's book (though this one is an easier read), but for Latin there is not a whole lot else that is as good.

Will make you interested in visiting our favorite mountain!
If you are in the mood for an armchair journey, this book will bring Mt. Rainier to you. We have been up there quite a few times and love to take pictures up there.

Experience the fir trees and the crunch of snow underfoot from a distance. James Martin has captured the magnificence of this mountain.

John Harlin III complements the photography with text and has climbed many of the mountains in the Northwest.

I think we are about due for another visit!

It is so gorgeous in the Northwest. I don't want to live anywhere else.

Trialogue review
Subtitled "While Strolling from the Country to the City," this trialogue presents Mondrian's idealistic theories regarding art and life as a narrative occurring in real time rather than as a manifesto. The participants are identified only as "Y," a layman; "X", a naturalistic painter, and "Z," an abstract-real painter, obviously Mondrian himself. Taking place at six sites in the countryside at night while observing various natural and manmade phenomena, the trio discuss the relationship between art and life, and naturalistic vs. abstract art, finally ending in the studio of Z. The discussion is a re-working of Mondrian's ideas already presented in the previous essays "The New Plastic in Painting" (1917) and "Dialogue on the New Plastic" (1919).

Mondrian's clever use of the conversational format serves a dual purpose - it is his attempt to convince the world at large, represented by the layman and the naturalistic painter, of the necessity for the new in art (specifically Mondrian's own); and presents in written form the contrast of opposites so necessary in Mondrian's painting, the pairing of the naturalistic art (the "tragic") with abstraction (the "universal").

The New Art - the New Life: The Collected Writings of Piet Mondrian (Documents of Twentieth Century Art)
Published in Hardcover by Thames and Hudson Ltd (1989)
Authors: Harry Holtzman and Martin S. James
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Review of Mondrian's collected writings
Piet Mondrian, one of the great minds of modern art, left voluminous writings to both explain and defend his abstract style of painting. This book assembles his published essays, from his first "The New Plastic in Painting" (1917), through his other contributions to De Stijl magazine, and his posthumously published sketchbook notes.

This book is not for the casual reader, or for someone just beginning to explore Mondrian's ideas and work. Mondrian's writing style is at times lucid and straightforward, at others repetive and oblique, and this adds up to a dense read that requires much focus to appreciate. Mondrian's major contributions to modern art are all outlined in verbal form here, from the basics of Neo-Plasticism that he utilized throughout his mature style, to ideas that were so fantastic that they were not practical, such as his desire to make all his paintings in the space where they were to be displayed.

The book itself is quite lengthy: at 400 pages, this is not a quick read. While illustrations of Mondrian's paintings are included, they are not part of the overall page count, so the 400 pages are solid text. Each essay begins with a commentary that is quite helpful is placing that particular writing within its proper context, and the introductory essays by Holtzman and James are informative.

Overall, a great book chronicaling the development of one of the landmark styles of modern art, and the utopian, visionary thoughts of the man who dedicated his life to the world he had created, and to the hope that future generations would incorporate his idealistic beliefs into everyday life.

Influential Poets from the Sixties
The passage of nearly 40 years, has shown the test of time for the following poets featured in New Directions 18: Gregory Corso, Russell Edson, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Denise Levertov, Federico Garcia Lorca, and Thomas Merton. They and many others prove this collection to be worthy of any collector studying the early work of these famous writers.

Editor James Laughlin provides an "exhibition gallery in book form" for experimental and unconventional writing including a previously unpublished film scenario by Lorca, seven poems and a translation by the late Denise Levertov plus five zany parables from a young Russell Edson. This is fine reading with a historical look back into the early Sixties.

An Excellent Reference!
This is an outstanding reference for your personal library. Originally published in 1863, this volume is theologically technical and rich. Kurtz thoroughly analyzes the Old Testament system of sacrificial worship and includes detailed evaluations of the views of other contemporaneous German theologians, i.e., Keil, Delitzsch, Hofmann, Bähr, Keilforth, et al.

He's done it again! More, more!!
...

It's true, a picture is worth a thousand words... but in the case of Brother Mickey's work, the words make the pictures even more alive. He takes the time to visit actual workplacs to capture details before beginning each "portrait." The attention to (and inclusion of)detail is magnificent and adds authenticity to an already marvelous work.

This book -- and its predecessor -- is a must for the bookshelves of religious eduators in all settings, and makes a great gift!

Can't wait for next year!
