I often read A Man's Life before I fall asleep each night.
I've come to relate to this little book and its 'sayings'. It shrinks the basic ideas we all think about down to size in a few choice words.

A Man's Life provides clues to living an authentic life.
This book is a gem. Martin's epigrams are true and authenticfor him -- and when I read it, I see the similarities not only for myown lifetime, but the subtle victories and sometimes crushing defeat and pain that invariably comes when any of us attempt to live a unique life without guarantees of the outcome. One of my favorite Martin epigrams: "Not one of us is less delicate than the other; we simply shatter in different places."

A Pirate Exploring the Absurd
At times the story of Frobisher borders on the ethereal. Fleets of Elizabethan sea-dogs sailing every year or so towards Labrador, searching for the (apocryphphal) NorthWest Passage to China, returning each time from an ice-bound continent with lumps of black granite and then funding another trip on the strength of completely bogus reports that there was gold inside the granite rocks. The expeditions serve as a parable of greed, curiousity and folly. For Frobisher, they were the high point of a chequerered naval career. A notorious privateer, Martin served in some of Drake's greatest raids on Spanish America. He also served with distinction against the Armada. The only downside to a biography of Frobisher was that he was almost totally illiterate and that therefore almost everything about him has to be reconstructed from official records or second-hand reports. This is a great life of a strange man.

Wonderul and excellent research tome
A wonderful book written about one of England's first Maritime explorers. Frobisher usually is written with such notables of the time as Drake, Hawkins and Raleigh even if his famous voyage to the Northwest was a failure. He still managed to retain his dignity and eventually became one of England's greatest sailors. Mr. McDermott's book is a wonderful and complete picture of a quite-not-so-honest Yorkshire man who rose up to become a great explorer despite his past dealings with privateering and the law. Frobisher's last biography (AFAIK) was published in 1923 (William McFee) yet Mr. McDermotts excellent research and writing clearly rates above Mr. McFee's outline of a man whose history was written by happenstance and luck. I found this book to be invaluable research of a not-so-well-known man whom I portray at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in California. Well researched and well written. A must for any 16th century maritime history fan or historian. Cheers!

Coram Deo
"Man before God," that sums up Luther's resultant reformation in theology. Brecht in this volume of three, takes us into the context of this change and the resultant history thereof.

It is marvelously rich in its scope and depth, and written fairly and with good style. Originially in German, here it is aptly translated by James L. Schaaf.

One will receive fine insights into Luther's theology in this volume from his days at Erfurt through to the Diet of Worms.

Excellent Luther reading for those so inclined. All three volumes highly commended for your persual.

Comprehensive, positivistic bio by conservative German prof
Brecht's biography (3 volumes--this is volume one) was the first comprehensive biography in our century that fully explored the later Luther and is also the only Luther biography that tracks every single thing Luther ever wrote. If you are reading something by Luther and want to know the context, this is the place to look. It's readable and takes a conservative position on all of the major controversies. Beware, though: Brecht simply is not interested in source critique.

Great sourcebook! Tremendously useful.
This book is well-written and covers a vast scope. Contrary to what the title might lead you to believe, this book covers a lot more than just plain mediums. In fact, it offeres detailed information on just about any faction in the Skinlands that might interact with the Restless Dead: "Boardwalk mediums" found at carnivals and circuses the ruthless Giovanni vampires, even charlatans and frauds who possess no real talent, but manage to offend wraiths with their very presumption and chicanery.

This book is definitely worth the purchase price- it will enrich virtually any Wraith chronicle.

Mediums done right
This is a fine resource for mediums, much better than the Quick and the Dead. The systems stuff is vastly improved, with a battery of new merits and flaws for mediums that I actually found useful (and can be used to supplement or replace the hedge magic paths for interacting with wraiths). There is some good stuff on summoning, a large section on Native American medicine men and shamanic dealings with the dead, a fresh look at many of the old ghost-dealing groups, and a new ability for those people who have had enough with wraiths shouting in their ears.

Meet Martin Luther King Jr.

WOW! I can't believe what my child learned.
We have read a lot of biographies, but this one was different. I don't really know why. My son, 6, was captivated by this book. He now devours EVERYTHING he hears about Martin Luther King, Jr. My son learned about a man like himself in many ways who experienced difficulties and fought unfair laws just because of his color. He also learned about a man named Gandhi and the influence he had on Dr. King. I was so impressed by the impression that this book made on my son. And he recognized scenes from the book when we watched the movie "KING." Rarely does any book have this much impact on a young child. It definitely deserves 5 stars.

Great Bio for Kids
This is the perfect biography for kids around 8-12 years old to read. It has lots of information and is a little more advanced than a Martin Luther King biography you would find in a first grade classroom would be.This would also be a great book to read if a child has to do a report.

Men Against the State : The Expositors of Individualist Anarchism, 1827-1908

Essential
Published in 1953, this book remains the essential study of that uniquely American brand of anarchism, known as individualist anarchism, that owed more to the frontier than it did to the urban anarcho-socialists of Europe like Bakunin. This book has become very hard to find, but is well worth tracking down. Another recommended book on the same subject, which is easier to find although not quite as thorough a study, is Eunice Minette Schuster's "Native American Anarchism". Individualist anarchism has been influential far out of proportion to the small number of adherents it gained - the modern Libertarian movement, credit unions, Robert LeFevre's branch of pacifism, and the food co-op movement can all be traced back to the individualists' ideas - so it is a subject that deserves to be read about. And this book is the best place to start.

Essential Reading
This is the essential treatment of the American anarcho-individualists -- Josiah Warren, Stephen Pearl Andrews, Benjamin Tucker, Lysander Spooner, and similar figures. Not only those interested in individualist anarchism, but anyone interested in anarchism -- or even politics and economics generally -- should find much of this book eye-opening.

168 Pages of REAL American History
If you are considering the military, if you just need some courage in your life, or if you just enjoy American History, this book is a must read. James Kirby Martin will become your mentor, but he will always remain a simple man. The most valuable part of this book is the reality of the American Revolution. It will open your eyes to the hardships that the ordinary soldiers had to go through so that you can sit here and read this review. READ IT...YOU'LL LOVE IT!

A truly valuable artifact of American History
"Ordinary" hardly seems to be the appropriate description of one Joseph Plumb Marin. True, Martin never holds any rank of note in the Revolutionary Army, however his contribution to the cause of American independance transcends any momentary action or deed. Martin's greatest donation is this work, loaded with stories of struggle, pain and hardships that make him quite extraordinary. His colloquail style and humor, even in the face of starvation and death, gives the reader a new frame of reference with which to view the War for Independance.

Small Hours of the Night, Selected Poems of Roque Dalton
Dalton's poetry is intense, and exudes revolution in every verse. Knowing a history of the poet's life and struggle, you get a greater feel and appreciation for all his work. His pain, love, and hate all mixed together delivers the most powerful poetry I've ever read. I enjoyed this book immensely, and recommend it to all of those that are a rebel at heart.

Must have for your collection
In Dalton's words you can hear his pain, loss and anger; but it's his love and romantic vision that you take away. I tresure this book and it stands as my most read book.

The book every geographer should have.
"All Possible Worlds" is an excellent source for the history of geography. The authors cover geography as done by the ancient Greeks, Phoenicians, Muslims, Chinese, Medieval scholars. Portuguese, and all the explorers during the Age of Exploration. They excellent cover how hard it was to discard the wrong ideas of the Greeks. After discussing Humboldt, they then go into the development of geography from 1850 to the present day, which to them was originally in the 1970's, although it has been updated up to 1993. in each of the major countries on the Earth.

A definite book for any true geographer to have.
