Really beauiful wildlife photographs!
I really enjoyed this book, and was fascinated when I recognized Balog's work from the recent endangered species stamp collection. This book would make a beautiful gift and addition to any animal lover's collection.

ATM architecture and Implementation
This is an excellent book for anyone who wants a straight forward explanation of what ATM is and how it functions. First of all, the book is not to long; so when you look back through the book, you can easily find the information you want. Secondly, it is laid out in a logical format; you don't have to read a ton of pages before getting the answers you are looking for. Other books spread information about a specific topic throughout the book. With this book, you can learn the concepts you are looking for on a single page. This books strongest attribute is how the information is presented. Related information is presented simultaneously, not hidden until the next chapter. When I was writing a research paper on ATM, I found this book to be my favorite by far.

Studying the weekly Scriptures for Catholics
I found this book to be very helpful in my scriptural studies. I like the way it is set up and the reflections. Most of all, I like the way each Sunday has the readings, with Scripture references, a reflection, questions to meditate on, ideas on how to share your faith throughout the week and the references for the rest of the upcoming week readings.

Basic Pen Knife Carving With Tom Wolfe
I have been a sculptor in clay for many years and do casting of my work in pewter. Recently I decided to take up wood carving as well. The first Tom Wolfe book I read I borrowed from a friend. It was this book. It is easy to understand and Mr. Wolfe takes you thru each step. It was so helpful in learning to carve with pen knives I had to buy my own copy to keep as reference and will use it for many years to come. This is a wonderful book for beginners and great for long time carvers as a reference. He uses simple terms and easy to understand directions. The first carving I did following his direction is beautiful and sold for $90.00!

The Beckett Actor: Jack Macgowran, Beginning to End
Published in Hardcover by Past Times Pub Co (1988)
Authors: Jordan R. Young, James Mason, and Martin Esslin
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Fascinating look at a fascinating actor.
My interest in Irish theatre brought me to this book. What a find! A fascinating look at a fascinating actor. The author brings alive the work and times of MacGowran. A well-researched and thorough work recommended for any student of theatre. I was especially impressed with the variety of interview subjects. Made me do a search for MacGowran's available work on video. While not a big fan of Beckett, I was impressed by the relationship between the playwright and this ultimate interpreter of his works.

Being, man, & death: a key to Heidegger
Published in Unknown Binding by University Press of Kentucky ()
Author: James M. Demske

Average review score:

Being-unto-death as man's existential condition.
This work is an examination of Heidegger's thinking about death and its relationship to the questioning of being. The book looks at Heidegger's early thought in _Sein und Zeit_, with his notion of an authentic being-unto-death as an existential modality for man through the "turning" in his thinking to his mature thought. I found the section of the book which deals with "being-in-death" and Heidegger's thought as it relates to an "after-death" to be particularly interesting. Heidegger takes no position on the possibility of a "being-in-death", but this work examines some of the thinking around this issue. Overall this is a good introduction to both Heidegger's early and later thought and a good discussion of the philosophical issue of death.

Britain's One (and only) Private University
This book of readings from the London based free market think tank, the Institute of Economic Affairs, celebrates the twenty-fifth anniversary of it's founding.

Given the high regard with which British tertiary education is held throughout the world, it is more than somewhat surprising that in one league table, Britain comes bottom. That league table is in the proportion of private to public university education. While Chris Woodheadhas elssewhere, in 'Class War' recorded the failures of the English and Welsh school systems, there is no corresponding treatise on the current problems currently facing British Higher Education.

Lest there be any mistake, the authors writing herein are not focussing on the failures of the system, they are in fact making the case for more private institutions, but the problems are there and the current Blair administration has no current response.

This collection has some admirable moments. One could argue that the order could have been better such that a history of the creeping nationalisation and state control of the once great universities preceeded Harry Fern's original paper which set the ball in motion. It is hard to appreciate the serious nature of his call to arms to establish an independent university in Britain.

One could argue to that there is an ommission - that of the tale of struggle to bring the university into existance to it's current position.

On the whole the papers in this volume are of extremely high standard and immensely readable. Three papers stand out for me. Firstly, Kenneth Minogue's excellent account of the collapse of the academic in Britain. This will certainly spark some controversy. Secondly Norman Barry's insider account of privatising university education and finally, not the best but certainly some robust arguement in Duke Maskell's 'Great Higher Education Investment Swindle'.

This is a must read for anyone interested in higher education. For those fortunate enough to work in the private education sector already it is even more important to read as a reminder of the appalling alternative.

Calgary: Secrets of the City

enjoyable,... if only it were written by Aldous Huxley!
The book suffers from being far too personal, and lacks detail. Anecdotes abound, but they are, in toto, not particularly interesting or helpful ones, mostly along the lines of childhood vacations to the beach and the like. After the first 25 pages I became frustrated with the fact that his story and ideas had progressed no further. Clearly a novelist of great potentials, he is nevertheless mistaken if he believes that an unconnected narrative (with whole chapters almost reading like store catalogues) is the defining characteristic of the time. But, once you get at least 50 pages into the book you will not stop reading it. The author sustains the plot while challenging us to consider reality and progress.

Murders, suicide and incest give a gothic aura to the tale, but then no one should underestimate the horrors of that handful of half-cocked insights - the type that flit through your head while brushing your teeth in the morning - that actually develop into a collection of oddly believable urban myths. You'll be surprised how many of them you've heard and believed to be true! Don't miss the chapter that compares "The Wizard of Oz" with anarcho-capitalism. A good critique of government education is also offered as well as a two part section on monopolies. But, the author should read Hayek and then rewrite this book. For sure it would be better then and certainly more accurate, as one must know the meaning of the term before pronunciation becomes an issue.

The language was excessively complex, but anyone interested in rationality and departures from rationality, anyone who is fantastic at bringing sexual tension and the macabre to the surface of fairy tales and folklore, anyone who can enjoy an 11-minute vacation and come back with something to think about, anyone seriously interested in politics and theology, anyone that wishes to understand how the author thought about these problems should read this book.

Excellent Step-by-step instructions.
The reason I really liked "Carving Bears and Bunnies" by Tom Wolfe, was the step-by-step instructions and color photographs. As a beginner they really helped me to get the proportions right on the carvings. I really enjoyed this book of Tom Wolfe's and I am hoping to get some other ones of his.
