Coming Apart: An Informal History of America in the 1960's
Published in Hardcover by Times Books (1974)
Author: William L. O'Neill
Amazon base price: $13.00
Used price: $9.50
Collectible price: $14.82
Average review score:

Brilliant, incisive, mordant, electric cultural history
O'Neill's Coming Apart was written in 1969 -- a fact that would seem to disqualify it as cultural history. But in fact the author's closeness to the zeitgeist, as well as his freewheeling willingness to speak his mind and waffle around with mummified standards of "argument" and "evidence" make for a truly good narrative. The author is an extremely smart, well-informed person who writes equally well about politics, diplomacy, the drug scene, Vietnam, and everything else that seemed to define the decade, and does so with a verve that makes you feel like you are there -- or at least there with the author. It is brilliantly informative, and funny at times. Deserves the Parkman Prize if there were any justice in the world.

Better than any Readers Digest "Drama in Real Life"!
I set this book aside for a few days, before reading the last chapter, because I simply didn't want it to end! In each chapter, Steve and Valerie Bell introduce you to new friends who tell heart their heart-wrenching, inspirational, and instructive stories. I came away from this book with new eyes to see what faith and love really look like when tested by tragedy, disappointment and fear. Steve and Valerie: PLEASE write a sequel! How about a Volume 2?

Coming Back to God
Published in Audio Cassette by Zondervan (01 Mai, 2001)
Author: Patrick M. Morley
Amazon base price: $17.99
Used price: $14.00
Average review score:

A Common Man's Approach to God
This book was tough to put down...I read it in 3 sittings! It takes you on a straightforward, step-by-step journey through four "systems" of belief, from a 'worldy' pleasure/comfort based system, all the way to a Christian God-based system. The conclusion that the book brings you to is that it is not unreasonable to believe Christianity is true, that this system works the best of all of them. This is a great book to give to someone who is seeking truth, or is frustrated with the futility of life. The writing style is easy-to-read, and it uses stories of people going through every day struggles that sound just like you or someone you know, which really draws you in. I have read and enjoyed several of Morley's books, and I think this one is his best one so far.

Coming Back to Life: Practices to Reconnect Our Lives, Our World

Inspiring, universal truths about self, community and world.
Without having to consult a post-modern dictionary, Joanna Macy and co-author, Molly Young Brown give inspiring and heartfelt explanations and examples of their lifework: dealing with the roots of conscious and unconscious pain that we all feel with regards to ourselves, while bringing home the concept of our connectedness to this world. They point out the fallacy of basic assumptions that we can fix whatever problems we create (the fix-it mentality), as well as dealing with resulting issues of burn-out and stress by alternatively doing the "work that reconnects". The dynamic model set forth in this book recognizes the role of community and encourages us out of an antagonistic "us" versus "them" concept which tends to lead us towards short-term NIMBY (not in my backyard) solutions.

In the preface to the book, Joanna Macy writes, "THIS IS A GUIDEBOOK. It maps ways into the vitality and determination we each possess to take part in the healing of our world."

Coming Clean About Organizational Change: Leadership in the Real World
Published in Textbook Binding by Amer Assn School Administrator (01 Januar, 1997)
Author: Jerry L. Patterson
Amazon base price: $13.95
Used price: $8.00
Average review score:

This is an honest and candid review of change in schools.
Jerry Patterson tells it like it is. He pulls no punches when describing potential pitfalls when attempting to create real systemic change in today's schools and school districts. At first, this honest look at the realities of trying to change schools may seem cynical, but on review Patterson creates realistic scenarios of what leaders need to know before they initiate change strategies. Patterson brings life to the ideas of writers like Gardner, Burns, O'toole, and Deal and points up some great rules of thumb for those who consider themselves "transformational leaders" in schools today.

The Coming Crisis: How Government Dependency Threatens America's Freedom
Published in Digital by The Heritage Foundation (01 Januar, 2002)
Author: James Demint
Amazon base price: $1.50
Average review score:

Well reasoned discussion of a serious problem facing us
Jim DeMint connects many problems that face America into a coherent whole. Many of the things we see such as rising taxes, and rising demands for government services, are just symptoms of a deeper problem. Jim relates how freedom of choice in all areas of life is the root of liberty. Citizens freely exchanging a certain price for the value of an item is freedom that is endangered when government expands. We end up with a tyranny of good intentions that undermines the values and self-determination of the citizens.

We are using this report as part of our home schooling program. It provides useful balance to the typical reporting found in the media.

The Coming Days of Thunder

The Coming Days of Thunder
This book shares timely revelations from the Word of God that seem to have laid dormant until this present day. The author does an excellent job of examining the various "beginnings" in scripture, and then shows how they also point to the end-times. Certainly now is the destined time that God is opening up scripture to enlighten our "understanding the end by looking at the beginning." Though that seems like such a simple concept, Symon Boschma has brought forth some deep unravelings of the future through the revelations God has given him. Truly, it is amazing how much God reveals about His purposes from scripture. How much more have we yet to find? Though containing much to chew on, this book is written in a layman's language so that it can be accessible to most anyone. Boschma writes with passion for his subject, and it spills over on the reader. I'm glad that this book crossed my path; in fact, I believe the Lord intentionally brought it to my attention. Seeing the past in scripture interpret and predict the future in scripture is somehting I needed to see.

Coming Full Circle: Honoring the Rhythms of Relationships
Published in Hardcover by Third Side Pr (1999)
Author: Nancy Vanarsdall
Amazon base price: $31.95
Used price: $6.99
Average review score:

A warm, wise, wonderful book about honoring relationships.
Coming Full Circle gently shows the reader how to treat relationships themselves with kindness and respect. Nancy VanArsdall skillfully weaves the color of narrative into the fabric of her wisdom. By doing so, she demonstrates that relationships have their own lives and their own rhythms. She encourages us to respect the relationship itself, rather than trying to make it fit some preconceived notion.

The book describes the way in which relationships wax and wane in a natural rhythm over time--in cycles that repeat themselves. Understanding these rhythms has helped me to recognize changes in relationships as natural occurrences--and thus my fear of and anxiety about those changes has decreased. The reader of Coming Full Circle will learn to watch a relationship the same way one watches a sunset or sees the seasons change--with delight in the process.

Coming Full Circle is a warm, wise, wonderful book.
