Are you either Christian or Homosexual? Read this book!
Tigert has started to open the door on Christian homosexuals and the oppression they face within their own churches. She brings the reader face to face with personal accounts of the struggles that lesbian and gay people go through in society, but more specifically in church. She challanges the logic behind the homophobia. She helps explain the phenomonon of "splitting" and the impact it has on those who are not white male heterosexuals. For those who of us who feel called by God to ordained ministry, but who hesitate to heed his call because of the overwhelming response of congregational segragation of our homosexual being, this is a book to relate to. Excelent! I eagerly await further books by Leanne McCall Tigert.

A MUST READ!!!
Leanne McCall Tigert beautifully and painfully captures what it is to discover yourself gay within a mainline denomination. Her approach is refreshingly honest, illuminating the struggles and the celebrations of lesbigay Christians. Read it, as I did, and discover yourself within her story. Fabulous reading for anyone struggling with the church and homosexuality, and a must read for any lesbigay person contemplating a call to the ordained ministry.

Awesome Ministry Tool!
After reading this, Jim Goll just jumped to the top of my list of all time favorite authors. He makes the words on the pages so easy to read and to digest in your spirit man. I personally was touched on three various leves. One I learned so much about the prophetic ministry that you don't hear on a regular basis. Secondly, I learned much about myself, my personality, and preferences concerning ministry. Lastly I felt that I was being fed rich and strong meat. I found myself growing and maturing in many areas of my life and ministry. This is a must read for all who want to learn more about the prophetic and be on the cutting edge front lines of ministry.

Think you're a prophet - read this book!
Jim W. Goll goes into a very deep study of the role and person of the prophet. In many ways this book reads like a text book but don't let that turn you off. I found this book very informative and a great book to read. It is not a fast read. Due to the textbook nature of the book there are chapters and even sections of chapters that you will want/need to chew on a bit and perhaps re-read to get the full value of it.

Goll starts with a very brief history of some prophetic movements, moves on to some characteristics of prophetic people and spends the rest of the book giving examples of prophets and how to build the gift that God has placed on the prophetic person. There is a lot of info about the blessings and pitfalls to watch out for.

I would recommend this book to every pastor and every person who has ever acted in the prophetic or believes that they have a prophetic gift.

A great book!
I would very highly recommend this book too. It's romantic and is a great story! It was hard to put down.

Great book!
This is one of Grace Livingston Hill's best works. This book shows how much a young person can do in the world. She goes through many trials and gets stuck at a house party with a drunk man chasing her. But she is saved by the man of her dreams, both from her awful family and from the attacker. If you like GLH's writting you should read this one!

Must have if you do a lot of genealogy!
This is an outstanding book that every genealogical society should own, as well as serious genealogist. The book provides information in both an overview format as well as ethnic group specific information. The price is right - add it to your collection of materials - you will not be sorry.

A Great Reference Piece.
Encyclopedic in scope, this work is a great primer for anyone interested in developing a clearer sense of what America's "immigrant beginnings" truly means. Although the book sometimes fluctuates awkwardly between tedious number crunching and smooth novelistic writing, they ultimately balance out to give the reader intriguing stories supported by pertinent statistics. This work is highly readable and quite enlightening.

A magnificent collection of Native North American literature
"Coming to Light: Contemporary Translations of the Native Literatures of North America," edited by Brian Swann, is an amazing volume. Approximately 800 pages long, this anthology brings together materials from all over the continent. Cultures included range from the Yupik of Alaska to the Zuni of New Mexico to the Iroquois of southern Ontario--more than 30 different peoples in all.

Each selection is preceded by its own separate introduction which discusses such topics as the culture and language of the people who produced the text, the specific storytellers, and translation issues.

The material in the anthology includes creation myths, animal tales, trickster stories, songs, and stories of birth, death, and transformation. Some of the most remarkable selections include the Wolverine tales of the Innu, which are masterpieces of bawdy humor, and the Yupik tale of "The Boy Who Went to Live with the Seals," a magical story of human/animal relations. I highly recommend "Coming to Light."

Absolutely wonderful
I really found this book to be an endless source of delight, because it not only features the incredibly diverse multitudes of narratives from individual Native American nations, but it because as a whole it really challenges the assumptions that have been handed down to us by imperialists. This is a truly amazing collection by what must be a brilliant scholar.

again and again
When I see orange and russet leaves wet with the mist of a rainy day in Central Park I feel as happy to be alive as I do when I read Cixous' essay "The Last Painting," included in this book. I imagine the shimmering surface of the Cathedral at Rouen. I feel glad that a human can write and think with such clarity and beauty and that I can read her words.

feminist critical theory
_Coming to Writing & Other Essays_ is a collection of essays dealing with the relationship between a marginalized person and writing-- that is between a person whose voice has been silenced and her voice. Cixous' writing is frequently narrative, rather than expository, so the text reads like so many short stories. She is irreverent and refreshing in the world of drily written critical thought.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
This book came to me highly recommended and after reading it I also highly recommend it. It is a very good book, great stories and very touching. You will read it over and again as its message speaks to your heart. I experienced moments of sorrow as well as moments of hilarity. I enjoyed it very much and hope there is a sequel.

A real eye opener
Eight Books Opened was a real eye opener. This is an exciting fast paced novel that keep me spell bound until the last page. We see how even as Christian's that are in church our heart is far from our mission.

I highly recommend this book. Not only for its literary content but its witnessing value.

Elli Review
This is a really good book, it really brings to mind things that no one could have made-up, its just way too horiffic, but it DOES open your eyes to what power one man can have, and how people follow the majority, not standing up for others.

Touching, Heart-breaking!
Just a few words, if you have not read this book go get it now! This is one of those books written from the heart, that cannot- but have you in tears, truely written from the heart; it stired my soul! A true story of a young girl overcoming nightmares that we would not dread to imagine, it has truely opened my eyes, to the horror, that so many people lived through, and so many not....Well done Livia! A book that will live for an eternity!

Embodying spirit : coming alive with meaning and purpose
Published in Unknown Binding by Hazelden; ()
Author: Jacquelyn Small

Used price: $7.50
Average review score:

Spiritual Journey: Explore Yourself - Explore the World
Jacquelyn Small writes with knowledge and experience ... I heard her at a workshop entitled "Embodying Spirit: Coming Alive with Meaning & Purpose" held in Orlando, FL . It was sponsored by Ms Small, who along with well-known psychologists and authors, Ram Dass, Thomas Moore, Joan Halifax & ohters, presented many of the ideas & concepts synthesized in this book. In essence, the book is about "self-discovery" from a Jungian, Christian and Buddhist perspective. She discusses concepts such as "Divine Discontent" (seeking a greater identity) , "the Law of Transcendence" (rising above problems/climbing to a higher plane of consciousness), "the Law of Antimony" (how to harmonize complementary opposites), "the Paradigm Shift" (recognizing we are cocreators of reality/our observation changes it). She helps us see conflicts as ways to sharpen our understanding of reality and consciousness. This should decrease our suffering and deepen our understanding of life. "Facing the Shadow" means opening up to see parts of ourselves we deny, bringing forth the unconsious aspects into awareness. We build our future by "harvesting the good from the past" and learning how we experiece archetypes. She explains that 'holding the divine tension' between being human and identifying with the divine we build our identities and fulfill our destinies. She describes stages of the "path of return" which means discovering we are "spiritual beings who are embodied". However, do not feel there is "final destination". The "path of return" is the journey of our lives on which we constantly use "spiritual discernment" as our guide. When problems arise which we resist the task is to be aware of the spiritual self, keep it awake, do not shut out feelings and avoid the tasks at hand. Simple? No. A true spiritual path never is ... the destination is "growth" and "awareness". We learn the physicist, John Hitchcock, defined spirituality as, "an internal shaping force". Jaqueline Small states, "Spirit and matter have merged." The journey is about awakening to our true identities.

Stop running away from yourself, you're okay!
I am sad to see that this book is out of print. If you find a copy, I highly recommend it. Jacquelyn Small presents information in a down-to-earth yet profound way. She talks a lot about the shadow self and how behaviors or feelings are on a continum from one extreme to another. Rather than labeling some behaviors or feelings as bad and others as good, Small encourages us to embrace and acknowledge all of them. She states that if we don't embrace our shadow side it will only become more powerful and eventually sneak out and embarass us. I've had enough of these incidences to believe what she says. I realized from reading her book that accepting the shadowy parts is not the same as acting on them. In fact, accepting them makes it less likely that you'll need to act on them. After reading this book I had to courage to make some necessary changes in my life. This book is really about self-acceptance and the concept of a whole self. We are more than our behavior. We are more than our past. We are more than the silly labels we pin on ourselves. Thank you Jacquelyn for sharing yourself with us.
