Beyond What You See

Way "Beyond" a Good Book
A sort of sequel to the novel "Madame's Book of Love Stories", or "The Tip of the Iceberg", the author of this magnificent novel is again successful in her attempts to lend a helping hand to teenagers with questions. Through her use of a teenage girl, Ms Groeneveld tackles many tough issues that face teens on a daily basis, such as love, alcohol, sex, and fitting in. However, the key to this novel is that the approach used in the face of these issues is perhaps not the most common approach. This is what makes the book so interesting and comprehensible to all. Answers to issues are so simple, and the underlying lessons are so easy to apply to everyday life. This is why the novel is of such interest to teenagers such as myself. Not only are the real underlying problems in the main character's life adressed, but they are answered in a simple manner. In all, I suppose the best review I can possibly give of this book is that I absolutely loved it. It worked for me-why don't you give it a try? You will not be disappointed...

The Biotech Investor: How to Profit from the Coming Boom in Biotechnology

Average review score:

A strong dose of reality to the often hype driven sector
Tom Abate has been covered the Biotech industry for the San Francisco Chronicle for years. It shows. He brings a strong dose of reality to this hype driven sector.

Who this book is for:
-Independent investors willing to spend a lot of time doing research
-People looking for a current industry overview
-Job seekers

The Good:
-Extremely well written
-Up to Date (as of spring 2003)
-Knowledgeable - several small tidbits of data pay for the book by themselves

The Bad:
-Will quickly go out of date. For example the Appendix contains a list of firm websites and market caps; Market Caps change - companies disappear.
-Not enough FDA information. This should have been a separate chapter covering the FDA approval process in detail as well as other countries' processes.
-Too much basic investment advice: firm valuation/free cash flow/ portfolio theory / investor risk profile. Other books do a better, more thorough job of this.
-No bibliography

I gave it 5 stars because if you are going to invest in biotech the book will more than pay for itself.

Britain Held Hostage: The Coming Euro-Dictatorship
Published in Paperback by Orange State Pr (1998)
Author: Lindsay Jenkins
Amazon base price: $13.30
List price: $19.00 (that's 30% off!)
Used price: $20.00
Average review score:

Essential, anti-"euro" info: 'keep Britain's sovereignty'..
Lindsay Jenkins shreds both the 'euro-crats' in Brussels and their complicit (sometimes surprisingly so) allies in the U.K. She spells out the reasons for the looming loss of Britain's sovereignty - and the last-ditch reasons for the United Kingdom to reject joining the euro. Frederick Forsyth's foreword (his usual crisp, lucid prose) sets the standard - well met - for the author's compelling destruction of the 'Euro-land' myths, lies and stealthy reach for dictatorial, statist power. Sixty years ago, in 1939, another grab for totalitarian control began in earnest. Its resulting horror should make it worth every thinking person's while to read this presentation of the modern day version. If you care about liberty, freedom and democracy, arm your thinking with this book's contents.

Cardiganshire County History: From the Earliest Times to the Coming of the Normans
Published in Hardcover by University of Wales Press (1998)
Author: Ieuan Gwynedd Jones
Amazon base price: $110.95
Average review score:

A great book, covering the early history of cardiganshire
This first of three volumes may cover a large period of time - from prehistory to the middle ages - but it does that very well. The articles are excellent and cover the county in great detail. Authors like D.P. Kirby and the late A.H.A. Hogg have earned their names in this profession long before and show that again here.

The book covers the earliest times of this region by looking at the standard periods: bronze age, iron age, roman occupation and the formative period of Ceredigion in the early middle ages. Lists are provided for hill-forts, roman settlements, etc. Very good.

The Best of Its Kind !
The book was given to me as a gift, and has become a treasured "refresher course" on the topic. Anyone who has to deal with someone else in a business (or other) context can benefit from the author's insights.

We've all heard that the Golden Rule is a great basis for human relationships, however, what or how to "do unto others. . ." sometimes is not so clear in a business setting. Roy Lantz does a very good job of putting the general concept of the Golden Rule into actual, "hands-on" kinds of rules, actions, and attitudes. The writing is clear, simple, concise, humorous, and interesting to read. The author's light, informal style may appear at first blush to oversimplify or trivialize his topic, but a few minutes with the book will reveal a great depth and understanding of the material. I have lent the book to several associates, and would recommend it to any employer who wants to improve relationships with his/her customers.
