Wonderful for Young Children (aged approx. 3 to 7)
I teach 3 to 6 year old children, and they (and I) love this book. We had several children in class expecting siblings or with siblings newly arrived when I brought in this book. The book describes preparing for the baby, including mom's shrinking, sometimes even kicking, lap, and all the furniture and clothes the new baby will get. It talks about twins, much to the delight of my student expecting two sisters. The baby's homecoming, routines, noise and initial immobility are all discussed. There are several very touching passages, especially the one about maybe being able to hold the baby. This passage evokes peace and stillness, suggesting that you may even feel the baby breathe as you sit with her.

My students were captivated by the stunning photographs and the narrative, by turns touching, funny, and serious. Reading this book caused may of them to share true stories about their own lives and interactions with siblings. Even the younger children thought about first memories with siblings now a year or two old. The photos also show children of many different ethnicities.

This was a great tool for stimulating conversation with the children and was a big hit in the book corner. I enjoyed the upbeat message of this book as well. Even though routines change and diapers are smelly, parents still love you. Even though your baby might seem a little boring at first, the big sisters and brothers will get to teach this little one what they know. I thought it very positive for the children, stressing their competency and the importance of their role as a member of the family raising a baby.

I would recommend this book strongly for any classroom or expectant parents. Or any child aware and interested in babies. (One of my children who loved this book is a little sister, but talked about her baby cousins!)

A Baby's Coming to Your House
Great pictures of beautiful children help to tell the story of a new baby arriving at a child's home.

A prodigiously researched indictment of indifference
This is a very good read. The book tells the story as to how the press in the USA covered the Holocaust. In doing so it explodes a lot of myths concerning the alleged lack of knowledge about what was happening to the Jews. Newspaper after newspaper from The New York Times on down had articles about the persecutions and murders. Yet they were never emphasized properly and were often relegated to the back pages. Rarely did they ever make the front pages. It was almost as if the nation preferred not to know. Many factors contributed to this; anit-Semitism, isolationism, American skepticism. The American government also contributed to down playing the news. The three most prominent villains in this were: Assistant Secretary of State Breckinridge Long ( anativist), Assistant Secrteary of War John J. McCloy (who said that if the USA bombed Auschwitz the nazis would be "even more vindictive") and Congressman Sol F. Bloom who headed the House Foreign Affairs Committee (and was referred to by Stephen Wise as "the State Departments House Jew"). There were reporters who did their jobs well who constantly emphasized that anti-Semitism was a "raison d'etre" of National Socialism however they were in the minority. This book along with David S. Wyman's "The Abandonment of the Jews" are the two best books on the subject. William D. Rubinstein's "The Myth of Rescue" is a poorly written book that contradicts itself over and over again and is a book for peopel who think that FDR could do no wrong.

Great book delving into American press during the holocaust
This book gives great insight into the way in which the American press treated the holocaust. While often overlooked, the press handled the holocaust in a manner that many Americans would be ashamed of today. This book is unique in that no other book i know of has delved as deeply into this area. In addition, Dr. Lipstadt is a truely unique and knowledgable expert on the holocaust.

Puts life in perspective
As a member of Generation-X (that means in 1998 I'm 35...)I find this book puts many things about life today in perspective. An excellent and easy read, I would recommend this to anyone who is fascinated by social and demographical characteristics of our society. A word of warning though, for all you Gen-Xers out there... You may develop a new found hatred of people in their late 40s and early 50s... It's a fun book. Read it.

I liked it so much, I made my wife read it.
I read this book in the summer of 1996, and found it to be an excellent tool. It takes a very organized approach to presenting the history of demographics and applying demographics to trends that we have observed over the past. It is highly relevant to life in rural Ontario which is where i was living at the time. Issues like the future importance of hospital closings, school development, and social programs should all be viewed in the context of demographics.

After reading this I went on to read Faith Popcorn's books, and found them to be rather flat predictions that demographics could easily fortell. Boom Bust & Echo is a useful toolkit for business people with lots of examples to draw from. My wife and I had our own company at the time, and I had to make her read the book so we could re-assess our strategy in light of this under-used tool, and it allowed us to reposition our company without straying from our original mission.

An Inspiration for all Men
This is an outstanding book, and it bring great inspiration to all that are striving for success.

Inspirational
Way to go Lee, et. al!

This volume of work is splendid! Each chapter is its own vignette of triumph over trial, of success without compromise. Each profile is of a contrasting context than the others, and together they form a beautiful mosaic of thought, courage, and intellect. This body of work would make an excellent gift to a young mind in bloom.

I Love You, Too, Calvin
This book, reminds us of the struggles each of us have waged in coming to terms with ourselves and our choiuce of a sexual identity. In this culture we are trained that certain choices are acceptable and others are not. This book gives us a look into people who have not accepted this trap, more than one character is struggling with what is important in their life and how to express that love.

Christian, when the story opens, has decided relationships are just too hard on him, so he'll have none. Calvin, as the main character is very confident of who he is, and understands society well beyond his years. Even Rachel, as Calvin's mother, and Eric as Christian's previous boyfriend teach us much about dealing with ourselves and how we give and receive love.

Tom Cup writes a strong and yet tender story. His characters are very believable and you identify with them quickly. Sometimes you ask yourself if he has not been in your head looking at what has occured to you, when you watch the unfolding of the story. Many of his characters will expose emotions come from the universal experience.

Mr. Cup tells a story that would have been baned in stricter cultures; but one that has happened time after time, in many cultures. He tells this story of love and emotional struggle that has been told many times before in the heterosexual context, the fated lovers who come from circumstances which prevent them from consumating their relationship, the struggle to stay together, but also the struggle of those around them whom they affect by continuing their love.

At times you may be outraged at the circumstances and then you may come to tears. The writing is clear, the story line is direct and the reading moves quickly. This is a book worth the read, and certainly worth the money. You'll finish the book, wondering who else will enjoy it the way that you did; and wondering also how you can get other people to open their minds to seeing love like this without prejudice.

Calvin: A Coming Of Age Story
Not at all what I expected, Calvin not only made me laugh, cry, and angry but it also instructed. The book is rich with the challenges that gay teens and adults face, the struggles the mothers of gays overcome and so much more. I wish I could express what I learned and felt without spoiling the read. Nevertherless, I have to say, Tom Cup packs a lot into this story. This story is definately not for those under 17 though. A sad fact. I think what Mr. Cup has to share should have been made available to a wider audience. That being said, I highly recommend the book.

Revealing
This book was so revealing and raw...I knew battling cancer was a huge and difficult process, but I had no idea the range and depth of emotions/issues that a person has to deal with, and especially at such a weird age. The book was hilarious, entertaining, heart-breaking, and hopeful all at the same time. A great read for anyone, but especially for those who are battling cancer or love someone who is.

Honest, Humorous and Heart Warming
Finally someone who conquers cancer with a sharp tongue, a quick wit and without a bunch sap. Cancer Happens is the first book I've read about cancer where I was laughing one minute, then biting my nails and then sobbing like no 31 year old man should ever admit. Ms. Gifford pulls no punches. She lets you inside to see all of her pain, sorrow, bitchiness, fear, and frustration -- and it's funny. She makes you feel like you're sitting right next to her at the bar after support group meetings downing margaritas -- and you don't want her to stop talking. A great read about living life to the max no matter what gets in your way.

Charles Sumner

Exhaustive Balanced Biography--extremely well researched
David Herbert Donald's "Charles Sumner" is an exhaustive biography touching all areas of the man's life. Throughout, Donald is balanced in his treatment of a controversial man who was described, quite accurately by another reviewer, as the country's first "politically correct" politician. As a person I do not think I would have liked Charles Sumner nor agreed with his extremism in many of the positions he took (most other people in the government did not either), but his life is well worth reading about for a fuller understanding of the decades immedaitely prior to and immediately following the Civil War.

Donald goes into many speeches, newspaper reports, letters, personal opinions of others, and proposed legislation to give one a real feeling for the man. His controversial life and opinions give one much to think about regarding the complex issues of race, reconstruction, and society in mid-nineteenth century America. Although this is not the most lively written of biographies, it is judicious and scholarly. Well worth the time.

First Class
Harvard historian David Donald applies his keen intellect to the life of Charles Sumner and writes a worthy biography of a man Americans should know more about. Sumner might be described as the first "PC" politician. If you're interested in the Civil War, race relations, or the perils (and triumphs) of a public life devoted to principle, you'll learn much from this book.

a must read for every Christian
I found this book both a blessing and also heartbreaking. A blessing because it refocuses the true central message of true saving Christianity. It is also heartbreaking because it reveals how today's so-called "Christianity" is not true Christianity. The Bible says, in Acts, that the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch: so much for having Him as Lord and not Saviour! And Jesus said "If any man will come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me." But instead of crying the prayer of John the Baptist "I must decrease and He must decrease", a true example of the cross in action, we are too busy praying the "Prayer of Jabez"!!! I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to know the truth of true Biblical Christianity!

Returning The Cross To Its Rightful Place In Our Churches
An excellent book that challenges the Church to return to the centrality of the cross in its faith and practice. Kirkwood has uncovered a major defect in evangelical Christianity, the absence of the cross in our preaching and living. He shows how the "accept Jesus for a better life" gospel is contrary to the gospel of the cross that was proclaimed by the apostles. Kirkwood clearly illustrates in his book how this faulty gospel has contributed to a church that is void of God's power to save and has produced a generation of "so-called" Christians who demonstrate no distinguishable characteristics from those who have not experienced God's grace and forgiveness. If the church would return to the message of the cross in its proclamation and experience, then we would once again witness God's power in our churches and individual lives. A powerful book that has challenged me to carefully examine the gospel messages that are widely preached and taught in evangelical circles today. A MUST READ for all serious Christians who want to know why the message of the cross must remain central to the church's faith and practice.

Whoopie, another "little girl" book
My twin girls insist on reading their favorite book, "Goodnight" (by the same author and illustrator) every night, and I was thrilled to find another book with the same little girl, Max, Theo, JoJo, and the rest of the gang. Since the girl didn't have a name in "Goodnight", we named her Debbie, but now we know her name is Juliette! (so we now call her Debbie Juliette...). Anyway, these are MY two favorite books to read to my two favorite 2-year-olds, I can't get enough of the pictures, they are beautiful. I plan to buy this book for Christmas presents! Great simple story and dozens of things to look at on each page, again, the pictures are adorable, water-colorey...

Christmas is Coming
I bought this book as a gift to my daughter and it has the most incredible pictures and cute story. This is the type of book that will be a keepsake and brought out every year as part of tradition!
