Worth It's Weight In Gold
This book was crucial to my early release from prison. Although it deals primarily with prison condition litigation, rather than conviction issues, I can think of no other gift to a loved one or friend who is incarcerated.

Mandatory Reading for everybody.
Not just for prisoners. Know your rights. Learn the Legal Process from the inside. Be a jailhouse lawyer without going to law school.

Reaching for Higher Ground in Conflict Resolution
This is a well written, concise and practical book that can serve as a valuable resource for members of any group, including the family unit. It inspired me and gives me hope that there is a way for people to learn how to come together in groups and solve our problems in a principled, creative process that works for the higher good of all concerned.

Excellent guidance for anyone invloved with large groups
Frank Dukes, Marina Piscolish, and John Stephens have successfully collaborated on a book that takes a frank and honest look at what facilitators do in groups and how to do it better. The book is remarkably readable and has instant applicability not only to those of us in the business of mediation; the city administrator and elected official will also find the book extremely useful. I recommend it to my colleagues in the planning profession as a refreshing and rewarding approach to handling large group processes.

This is not devotional candy
With so many light weight devotional books flooding the market these days, it is good to sink one's teeth into a great spiritual classic. Law was an 18th century Anglican. As he grew, his theology also grew. Near the end of his life, his writings began to lean toward gnosticism. "Serious Call" was penned while Law was in his prime. It was on John Wesley's personal book shelf and greatly influenced the father of Methodism. This book will challenge the reader. It speaks as strongly to the 21st century reader as to the 18th century reader.

An awesome spiritual classic as timely today as in 1728.
I read this book because Hannah Hurnard, author of Hind's Feet on High Places and other allegorical and devotional works, credits it with revolutionizing her spiritual life. Law exhorts Christians to offer all aspects of one's life and work as holy to God - work, finances, relationships, worship, prayer, etc. He reminds us of the Christian virtues of love, humility, peace, simplicity and conforming ourselves to God's will. This is a work which should not be forgotten or neglected by modern Christians.

Good Fire Station SOP Source
I was tasked with rewriting our SOP's and Station Procedures when our department changed from all-vounteer to combination. This book is full of good ideas. It has shown numerous places where our SOP's were lacking, and given me ideas where we just needed to flesh them out.

Not a good title
Please note that I ordered this book thinking it was about general SOP writing. It is about procedures in Fire Stations only. If that is what you want... it is probably good.

No good deed shall go unpunished
What started out as a worthy effort by a small press to collect hard-to-find stories by one of the great American writers of this century results in bitter lawsuits, huge costs, a lesser book, and an unfortunate lesson in the realities of publishing today. Hooray for those intrepid souls like the Millers who toil in literary vineyards for the love of the art more than financial gain.

Fascinating behind the scenes publishing legal battle
In 1987 an agent for Academy Chicago Publishers suggested it publish the Uncollected Stories of John Cheever. When his widow signed the agreement, it looked like a coup for this small publisher. But when the number of stories greatly exceeded what Mrs. Cheever expected, she and her children tried to call off the deal. A legal battle quickly began in Chicago and New York courts. Anita Miller does a superb job of recounting the behind the scenes legal wrangling and disastrous courtroom scenes, at the same time providing many insights into the publishing industry. A must read for fans of lawsuit accounts like Civil Action, and for those interested in publishing and publishing law.

Where Do You Stand With the Church?: The Dilemma of Divorced Catholics: (With Chapters on Annulments, Conscience, and the Internal Forum)
Published in Paperback by Alba House (1997)
Author: John T. Catoir
Amazon base price: $7.95
Average review score:

Excellent Pastoral Guide for Laypeople & Clergy
This is an excellent, pastoral and sensitive work that has given much hope to people searching for a solution to their individual marriage cases. Father Catoir is known for his sensitivity and gentleness and it is very evident in this book. Yet, it is also done in a professional, canonical and informed manner.

I have given this book to many people in my parish who are in situations in which they were turned down by the local Tribunal and felt that since they have remarried, their life in the Church was "over."

This book has brought them much hope, relief and guidance.

I highly recommend this to any Catholic who works with people who are divorced and either have or have not approached the Tribunal with their cases.

A Definitive guide for divorced and remarried Catholics
As a former advocate procurator for a Tribunal, I longed for a concise pastoral guide for the divorced and remarried Catholic, particularly with regards to the reception of the Eucharist. This is that book. Clearly and simply written, it gives a pastoral approach to the problem of reception of the Eucharist by the remarried Catholic. Following the advice will not be easy, particularly for those who feel their individual conscience must bow to external forums. Yet it relies upon Canon Law and the 1994-97 Catholic Catechism to bring hope and joy to the remarried. Unlike the vicious diatribes of Vasoli and Kennedy who seek to wreck demonical vengance upon their nullity seeking spouses, this guide uses the examples of the Samaritan woman and the Chicago "marriage in possession" practices to guide the "internal forum" solution. Thus, in good conscience, a divorced and remarried Catholic can receive Communion, be a Lector and Eucharistic Minister, even when the Tribunal has said that the evidence for the "external forum" is insufficient. A must read for remarried Catholics, their pastors, and their bishops. AMDG

Words That Bind: Judicial Review and the Grounds of Modern Constitutional Theory
Published in Paperback by Westview Press (1995)
Author: John Arthur
Amazon base price: $25.00
Used price: $9.95
Average review score:

Good Account of Liberal-Conservative Debate
Arthur gives an insightful and suggestive account of political conservatism and something like a Rawlsian liberalism, and draws out a dialogue between the two. Arthur argues for a 'democractic contractualism' which partially reconciles the two extremes (although what he is really up to is trying to accomodate for some of the standard lines of criticism of contractual liberalism). I think that Arthur's position depends greatly on a Kantian ontology of political subjectivity that leads to inescapable absurdities, but the author is completely aware of them and breaks new ground in responding to them. Arthur is very sharp on the historical antecedents of this debate, and his treatment of Rawls' notion of a 'veil of ignorance' is very useful if you're trying to figure out Rawls. Arthur's best talent as a writer is his ability to work through a concept or argument in a practical context; he explains the legal reasoning behind some of the most (in-)famous cases in American legal history, and shows how his account of democratic contractualism might better address the issues at stake. This is a first-rate book, and anyone interested in contemporary political theory will find it very useful. I think Arthur's conception of critical legal studies is best forgotten, though.

WTB - An Amazing book by a modern day genius
Words That Bind is an amazing book! The book is clearly written, easy to follow, and uses examples to demonstrate every point! Another great one to add to your collection, Jon!

Once Again, the Grisso Approach is Most Thoughtful
Read this book. Change the system.

A Valuable Collection
For anyone interested in how courts deal with juvenile crime, and for anyone who thinks there must be a better way, read this book. Drawing upon the simple, yet profound idea that children do not turn into adults on a single day, the authors elaborate on the deficiencies of a legal system that is, in fact, largely based upon just that notion. The chapters help us to envision a legal system that would see adolescent development as a gradual and continuous process, and that would not allow prosecutorial ambition alone to determine which young offenders should be held criminally responsible for their actions.

Considering how expensive lawyers can be, this is a steal!
There is no longer a need to pay some lawyer $400 to research basic human resources legal questions. This book anticipates hundreds of frequently-arising human resources problems and provides answers in easy-to-read charts. You don't have to have a legal degree to read it, either. All fifty states, as well as United States Territories, are covered in a thoroughly-researched manual. Its a bargain. Every company with employees should own a copy.
