Murray on Contracts

Author: John Edward Murray

Murray On Contracts: a priceless study of contract law
Professor Murray has created a masterful volume cogently and concisely providing the principles of contract law. Murray on Contracts is a must read for any law student, practitioner, or business person seriously interested in a complete study of contract law. This volume contains abundant citations to case law and legal commentary that is valuable to any practitioner analyzing the state of a principle of contract law in his or her jurisdiction. In addition, Murray's lucid and facile style allows the layman and lawyer alike to learn the principles of contract law with pleasure and insight. This is a great contrast to the overly pedantic style of many academic commentators in various courses of study. In short, Murray on Contracts does what few other volumes of its kind can do: make a volume of complex and arcane legal principles read like an engrossing novel.

Natural Monopoly Regulation : Principles and Practice
Published in Paperback by Cambridge Univ Pr (Pap Txt) (1989)
Authors: Sanford V. Berg and John Tschirhart
Amazon base price: $37.95
Average review score:

Comprehensive, modelling-based, rigorous
This is perhaps the only graduate textbook on Natural Monopoly Regulation available. Unfortunately, it's available only in libraries, as it went out of print soon after it was published. The company has no known plans of reprint, which is a real disaster for all graduate students of the field.

This textbook is comprehensive, modelling-based, rigorous, and yet maintains connection with the realities of the peculiar regulated markets in question. This implies that not only pure theoretical models are discussed and analyzed, but also the specific regulations are embedded into presentation.

Despite the fact that the book was written in late 80s, it still serves as an invaluable reference. I wish it were in print...

The New Covenant Validates Torah: A Response to Christianity's Assault on the Eternal Law of God

A Must-Have for Every Messianic Home
John McKee, the editor of TNN Online and an accomplished apologist for the Messianic perspective has done an outstanding job of addressing one of the most controversial issues that confront Messianics today. "What does one do with the Law of Moses, commonly referred to as the Torah?" In order to answer that question, he was prompted to write the book, The New Covenant Validates Torah. For those who need a primer to defend their perspective on pursuing the Torah, this volume is a valuable tool.

What is interesting to note is just how this book was conceived and written. First you must understand that John has developed a "worldwideweb" reputation for his articulate articles defending the Messianic perspective. Since 1997 as the editor for TNN Online, he has spent considerable time debating people from all over the world about a variety of Biblical topics.

Through one of his many contacts, he received a four-page article that addressed the subject: "Should we observe the Mosaic Law?" by a Christian pastor from the Midwest. In reading the article, John was confronted with the argument that "the Law" had been abolished by the accomplished work of the Messiah of Israel. Not a new argument, but one that John had contemplated for years as he became more Messianic in his walk. As he read point after point that the pastor was making, John could see the obvious flaws in his weak argument. John knew from his years of debating with lawless (antinomian) Christians, that the arguments were not valid in light of the Truth.

After a while, the inspiration came to use the pastor's questions as a guide to write a book that would address just how Christianity has attacked the Messianic return to Torah observance and obedience. This format directed the book to address some enlightening topics such as, the antinomian assault, what the Torah is, the purpose of Torah, the obedience to Torah and Torah does not justify. Each of these topics takes a deeper look at the applicable scriptural references and the conclusions drawn from poor English translations. Time is devoted to analyzing the original Greek texts to clearly describe why the "Christian" logic to disregard the Torah is flawed.

One of the other motives that generated this book is John's conviction that many Messianic believers do not have the tools to respond to the anti-Torah comments or antinomian arguments that come from the Christian community. This is a serious challenge for the emerging Messianic community since to date there are a lack of scholarly discussions that address these issues.

Additionally, another benefit to having this volume on your bookshelf is found in the appendices. Here the reader will find six excellent articles that have been included to enhance the arguments developed in the body of the text. Topics such as the following are discussed.

·Dispensationalism: Root Cause of Antinomianism
·Is Messiah the Termination of the Torah?
·Have we been "Made Dead" to the Truths of God's Word?
·Why Study Torah?
·Torah As Constitution
·Does the New Testament Annul the Biblical Appointments?

So if you are Messianic and pursuing a Torah observant lifestyle, this book will definitely encourage and justify your decisions. Every Messianic home should have a copy!

The New Wave and Human Rights of Constitutional Law Against the Dark Age in America: Gods Truth Against the Secular Machine
Published in Paperback by John C. Redfern (1988)
Author: John C. Redfern
Amazon base price: $19.95

Insights on Society by a Visionary Author
Being a Political Scientist I was first skeptical about the content of this tome because of it's title. However, giving an aspiring author a read hass always been a favorite past-time of mine.

If you love the classsic political theory beginning with the Bible down through the Founding Fathers you should really read John Redfern. This book provides new insight into the American if not the human condition that only a visionary like redfern could provide. His concise view of politcal thought is as if it were pulled out of Cliff's Notes and have almost a basic elementry view of the political world.

There has not been such a political view since Pentagon Papers or All the President's Men. This book should be a must read for all political science students if only to show them the right and wrong ways to approach political thought.

Redfern also has a unique way of combining political thought and religious values which are unequaled by any writer today.

There are many who will read this book who might thinks that Redfern's ideas are off base because they are unable to understand this man's views. My advise is to read the book twice to at least understand the full value of this author's views.

This is a book for all ages and I strongly encourage anyone interested in the current state of affairs in the United States to read this book and then make your own decisions.

Fantastically Comprehensive Book
The New Wildfowler is not only the biggest waterfowling book I have read, it is also one of the very best. The chapters on duck hunting, goose hunting, punt gunning and inland marsh shooting are particularly comprehensive and the attention paid to population dynamics and ecology are very welcome. With contributions by over 30 of the world's leading waterfowling experts, this really is a book in a million.

No One Was Killed : Documentation and Meditation : Convention Week, Chicago--August 1968
Published in Paperback by John Schultz Associates (1969)
Author: John Schultz
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

The best account of Chicago '68
The events in Chicago during the 1968 Democratic National Convention vividly displayed the social divisions and conflicts of the Sixties. Thus it's an event that can serve as an entryway into understanding the period.

No one book can do justice to Chicago '68, but this one comes the closest. John Schultz takes you inside the International Amphitheatre where the convention was taking place as well as into the parks and onto the streets where the protests were. He captures the nightly confrontations at curfew time in Lincoln Park with cinematic clarity. Schultz's narrative sticks close to the street action, close to the acts of demonstrators, rather than the activities of the soon-to-be-famous so-called leaders. Read this to sense the full-bodied flavor of Convention Week 1968.

Lots of books on the Sixties are steeped in nostalgia and never cut through the foggy mists of time. This one is the original article, it will show you what it was to be there.

Northern Ireland: Can Sean and John Live in Peace?: An American Legal Perspective

"Too many Catholics, too many Protestants..."
And, as one person remarks in this study of the Irish conflict, "not enough Christians." Beginning with the earliest history of Ireland, author Rasnic traces the long-time resentment of the Irish toward the British and Anglo-Irish who occupied and controlled their land, and shows how attempts to eradicate Irish history and culture led ultimately to an Irish rebellion and independence movement in the 19th and 20th centuries. In a careful, thorough, and balanced manner, she describes the circumstances which resulted in the division of Ireland into the twenty-six counties of the Irish Republic, heavily Catholic in religion, and the six counties of Northern Ireland which have remained part of the United Kingdom, the population being 45% Catholic and 55% Protestant. With the Irish Republic having as its goal the reunification of the island, paramilitary groups on both sides have long resorted to violence and retaliation.

The author draws many parallels between the deep-seated religious conflicts in Ireland and Northern Ireland and conflicts regarding race in the United States. By examining legal cases and decisions in the United States regarding matters of civil rights, she explains the similarities and differences in legislative and judicial procedure between the U.S., Ireland, and Northern Ireland. She analyzes the terms of the Good Friday Accords of 1998, the events which led up to them, the various factions which had input in crafting them, and the personalities and relationships of the people from both sides which agreed to them, showing clearly the tenuous nature of the agreements and the immense patience which will be necessary on all sides if peace is to have a chance.

As the author points out, the Irish conflict involves many more issues than religion. With sensitive attention, she examines additional emotional issues including the release of prisoners, the reorganization of the police, inequities in housing, discrimination in jobs, the decommissioning of paramilitary groups, the inequality of schools, and even issues such as the routes of parades during the summer marching season, the use of British vs. Irish symbols on uniforms, and the choice of name for the police force. Her interviews with over twenty of the participants in the Accords are enlightening and give a human dimension to this enormous effort at peace, and she spends considerable time analyzing the newly established Human Rights Commission, the Committee on Administration of Justice, and the Equality Commission, all vehicles which are in place to redress past grievances if present behavior can be channeled in positive directions.

Author Rasnic has performed an immense service, especially to legal scholars, in explaining in clear, unambiguous terms the nature and history of the Irish conflict and the terms of the Good Friday Agreements which attempt to resolve it. By making connections to American civil rights law, she puts it into a context which may allow Americans to understand the complexities more clearly. Her personal anecdotes add insight and liveliness to discussions which challenge the reader with their complexity. Anyone interested in exploring in detail the Irish/Northern Irish conflicts and their possible resolution will find this book to be a thorough and balanced guide. Mary Whipple

A well written a complete account. Well deserved 5 stars!
The authors give a full account of this historical trial. I had no background knowledge of the Nuremberg Trial, and I found this book easy to read as well as complete and detailed enough. I would complement it with Nuremberg's Diary, by Gilbert, to get a deeper insight of the defendants personalities. Although I can't compare this book with the others available on the subject, I would certainly recommend it as an excellent choice.

A Terrific Resource
This a really terrific explanation of the history of our modern adversarial system and would be particularly useful to trial lawyers who work within the adversarial criminal system. (It's one thing to know that one CAN object to hearsay...but haven't you ever wondered why we do?)
