Great Essays on Orthodox Traditions and Canon Law
With many years of experience of teaching in St Vladimir Seminary Professor Erickson here brings out a collection of essays relating to Orthodox Traditions and Canon Law. He investigates how the issues and ideas relating to Church life developed and how terms shifted their meaning through history. Church is not a static object, but lives and changes. We. as Christians need to take a serious look at the historical changes in order to understand the Church today. This is his conviction underlying all these essays. He discusses the importance of Canonical Traditions especially from the point of view of sacraments like Penance, Matrimony, Priesthood and Eucharist. As a member of the Eastern Orthodox- Roman Catholic consultation in North America, he also deals with the basic issues of collegiality and primacy, the concept of autocephaly, the problem relating to sacramental 'economy', the issues surrounding the filioque question and the misunderstandings over leavened/unleavened bread. His presentation is very informative, balanced, sincere and very useful for future reference. His appeal is to the traditions and canons; his objective is greater unity and continuity in the Church. Students of Canon Law and of Church History would treasure this book. For those who work for the unity of churches especially between the East and the West, this is a must read.

Enlightening Essays on Church Law and History
Professor John H Erickson widely known as the Assistant professor of Canon Law and Church History at St Vladimir Orthodox Seminary and the president of the Orthodox Theological Society of America has brought out this superb collection of 10 essays for the benefit of the contemporary Christian who seeks the truth. These essays manifest his continuing interest in the issues of the Church emerging in history and tradition. Wide range of subjects are dealt with, clearly laying out the Orthodox view points and at the same time shedding sufficient light on other differing perspectives. His essays never degnerate into polemics.

Erickson explores the ways in which church concepts and issues developed through the centuries. Concepts have shifted in their meaning considerably and in order to understand them adequately today, a historical investigation is necessary. The issues dividing Christians of the East and the West also need to be understood in a historical perspective in order to explore new ways of expressing Church's unity and continuity. He makes the strong point that the Church's past history, her traditions and canons challenge us today to put and end to polemics and work harder for unity. This collection of essays should be recommended to any committed Christian who loves the Church and to any inquisitive student of Christian theology.

a great anthology
Professor Erickson does us a favor in reminding us that canon law is not supposed to be legalistic. That may sound like an oxymoron, but it is true nonetheless. Using the canons as if they were self-interpreting is dangerous since it takes away the spirit of the rule, which is to bring us into a life-giving union with God in Christ Jesus. Rather, canons are to be applied with the context of their origin in mind, one which is often anti-legalistic!

Other essays deal with the penitential discipline in the Orthodox Church, divorce and remarriage, the priesthood in patristic teaching, eucharist and ministry in ecumenical dialogue, collegiality and primacy in Orthodox ecclesiology, the "autocephalous Church", problems of sacramental economy, leavened and unleavened: some theological implications of 1054, filioque and the fathers at the council of Florence, Index.

This is an outstanding collection, based upon years of teaching at St. Vladimir's Seminary in New York. Enjoy!

A Standard For The Chiropractic Profession
Dr. Reizer's book, "Chiropractic Made Simple" tells it like it is. The author doesn't dance around the many sensitive issues which surround the chiropractic profession. He dives right into the controversial items and gives laypersons an opportunity to learn the truth about chiropractic philosophy. Very few authors have the courage to write about many of the topics covered in this text. Some will be shocked when they read this book while others will be "turned off" by the author's claims that allopathic medicine has conspired through the years to eliminate chiropractic from the healthcare market.

This is an excellent book written by a doctor who has a vision of a very different picture when it comes to healthcare for people in the world. "Chiropractic Made Simple" encourages its readers to perform their own research projects about health related topics. It also encourages people not to rely exclusively on traditional news sources for information about their own health.

In addition, this book serves as an exceptional introduction to subluxation-centered chiropractic for both prospective chiropractic students and patients. Many of the philosophical components which are often difficult for new students and patients to grasp are simplified throughout the book. The author obviously has an extensive background in chiropractic philosophy and his unique writing style permits the novice to be able to gain valuable insight about these important concepts.

I recommend this book to any person who would like to learn about the true benefits of being under chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Is Simple !
Recently I became a patient at a chiropractor's office and upon the conclusion of my first visit the doctor handed me a book entitled, "Chiropractic Made Simple." Later that same day when I returned home I began and eventually finished reading the entire book. I was surprised how simple and logical the chiropractic approach to healthcare was.

I immediately decided to let my sister read this book in the hope that she would consider getting her family under chiropractic care. This book has been written clearly and is easy for the average person to understand. I hope others have the chance to read this book as well. Chiropractic really is simple!

Learning to Embrace Nature...A Good Place to Begin!
"Chiropractic Made Simple" is a great book that examines the subluxation philosophy of chiropractic healthcare. The author's theme that a doctor's ability to work with the laws of nature and not against them in order to best help patients is a very logical point. The author makes reference throughout the text that current allopathic objectives are out dated or obsolete.

I totally enjoyed this book and would encourage others to read it as well. Embracing the laws of nature is always a good place to begin when tackling health related issues.

Soon to be John Paul the Great!!!
This giant of the 20th Century, will be known as John Paul the Great by future historians. Today, his teachings are considered "out of touch" with the modern world by the mouth pieces of worldly power, especially on sexual morality. He is considered worthy of derision by them, how wrong they are.

The thought of JPII is trans-modern, it is a bold and sophisticated philosophical approach to the problems that afflict our world. His insights penetrate into the philosphical and spiritual roots of the modern crisis and has found the solution. His approach is a rigorus engagement with modern thought and transcends the dead-end thought that has emerged among intellectual eliets and poisons our universities.

For those who would gloss over his writings, they would miss the mystical import and profound depth of this thinker and leader. So subtle, so rich, it is easily missed.

John Paul II is a prophet to the world, a prophet whose message has largely been ignored.

In the not too distant future, when our need for the TRUTH presses upon us ever more heavily, those who search will find John Paul's writings and be liberated and ennobled by this man's potent seed.

Take this and steep yourself in the truth and allow this man's spirit, the spirit of the Father, Child and Love to fill you.

What a book! What a Pope!
Here they are, in one collection. Why buy them individually when you can have them all in one place?

This important book provides a study of 12 of Pope John Paul II's encyclicals, from the first of his pontificate, Redemptor Hominis, through the much discussed Evangelium Vitae and Veritatis Splendor, the not-to-be-overlooked Redemptoris Mater, and Ut Unum Sint.

Scholars and non-scholars will be pouring over the Pope's gifts for the next century to come. The encyclicals offer Pope John Paul II's brilliant blueprint for the third millennium. It is a blueprint fashioned from Scripture itself, but with modern insights to carry us forward across the "threshold of hope."

J. Michael Miller, C.S.B. offers an excellent introduction to Papal encyclicals and helpful notes prior to each chapter. In addition, an exhaustive index makes this a superb reference for pastors, teachers, writers, theologians, researchers, and the average layperson desiring to know more about the Church.

Religiously, Intellectually, & geopolitically important
Father Miller has captured an entire set of the most significant written works of the Papacy of John Paul II. Clearly the present pope has been a religious and geopolitical figure of first importance in the past 22 years, as has been amply documented in such works as Weigel's 'Witness to Hope' and Bernstein's 'His Holiness.' The universal intellectual achievement however of JPII is understandable most readily in his encyclicals. These documents speak from and reveal a philosopher and theologian of the first quality; indeed, as with Leo XIII, it may take at least a hundred years for the importance of his work to be understood. Fr. Miller has the qualifications on all fronts, as a philosopher, a theologian, and his former employment in the Papal Secretariat of State, to gather and remark on these works. Students of the times and their deepest roots will doubtlessly find here a collection of primary source materials that are indispensible to their understanding.

Essential reading for anyone contemplating gun ownership in
Gun laws are such a mess, even the most conscientious citizen will have trouble figuring out what is legal and what isn't. In addition, the subject is so culturally polarized, it is impossible for those with a strong opinion on the subject to give a clear answer to common questions. Enter this great book. Too bad it's not available for the other 49 states...

Necessary material
If you live in California and own a gun, this book is as necessary as a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher in your home.

Practical Guide
The author uses common everyday English to explain the web of firearms laws in California. It is complete with examples and court cases that define the current legal condition in the state. This is a very easy book to read and is a must for every gun owner whether you're a firearms expert or considering buying a firearm for self-defense. I bought 10 of these books for friends and family last Christmas.

The pastoral companion : a canon law handbook for Catholic ministry
Published in Unknown Binding by Franciscan Herald Press ()
Author: John M. Huels

Canon Law for Non-Canonist
Intellectually, Fr. Huels is among the leading and most gifted canon lawyers currently living in North America. In this book, Fr Huels applies his canonical genius to the pastoral application of canon law. This book is not so much for the canonist, but for the non-canonist engaged in pastoral ministry. It teaches the basics of canon law, provides a handy glossary of canonical terms, and tells you when you are facing a canonical situation over your head and need to phone a canonist.

In particular, the non-Canonist will find Fr. Huels' treatment of marriage law handy. It outlines in what situations a dispensation is necessary, as well as in what circumstances a proposed marriage is invalid. It also provides a handy canonical reference to other common questions that arise around the celebration of the sacraments -- such as who can be a sponsor for baptism and confirmation.

I highly recommend this book to non-canonists engaged in pastoral ministry who are seeking a handy reference concerning how canon law applies in common pastoral situations.

Good Book, But....
This is a very fine book, indeed. Spiritual leaders and priests are obligated to know the answers and explain them well. However, aren't priests and spiritual leaders obligated to not just know and explain the answers, but to live them, model them? May I suggest that the true spiritual leaders do not wear Roman collars. Lay people, who are striving to live the life the Church prescribes are the true spiritual models and leaders. They, not just the clergy, would greatly benefit from this book. We, the laity, are not shy or afraid to ask questions and educate ourselves. Buy this book! It is well worth every penny to all practicing Catholics.

Exceptional
This indeed is a tool for the pastors and all incharge in leadership in our churches. Rev. Huels breaks down the doctrine and liturgy, sacraments and explains them abviously from the Canon Law perspective. We live in a times when people are not shy or afraid to ask questions. As priests and spiritual leaders we are obligated to know the answers and explain them well. To have this book on the top of your desk is very handy and helpfull.

This is the secret dictionary used by US Supreme Court
I'm not a lawyer but I play one on television. If I was going to throw the book at someone, this is the book I would want to throw. I mean, it's a really BIG dictionary! Lots of words, but, unfortunately, no pictures. I especially like the definition of "wharfinger," also "Herkemer."

Only English law dictionary helpful on civil law matters
I am a member of the New York and Brazilian bars and have practiced law bridging the two jurisdictions for almost 30 years. In my practice, I have found Bouvier's Law Dictionary to be the only English-language law dictionary that cites and explains civil law concepts and institutions for the common-law lawyer. It is also the most useful English-language dictionary for the civil law lawyer trying to understand common law concepts, such as fiducuary duty, bailment, equity and the like.

Building Regulation, Market Alternatives, and Allodial Policy

Foreword by Dr. Walter E. Williams
In contemporary society, people increasingly rely on governmentto provide many goods and services. Those who champion governmentallocation of resources fail to consider both the effectiveness of government allocation and the moral questions involved. In the last century, resistance to government intervention, from paper money to economics regulation, was far more pervasive and effective than it is today. Indeed, today's Americans only have a faint understanding of the Constitution and its envisioned restraints on government activity. The Constitution and its philosophical underpinning are rarely taught and understood by most Americans. That is a remarkable change from the time of our nation's founding when a large percentage of Americans were conversant with the ideas of Locke, Cato, Paine and the Federalist Papers.

The Declaration of Independence, one of America's most important political documents, contains statements that are today greeted with hostility, or at best, viewed as extremist. The motif of America's inauguration has become too radical to discuss without extreme qualification, and those who want to use it to assail the present political process are labeled 'radicals.' Of course, the liberty-loving American founders also carried this sobriquet. Another characteristic of the modern age is that Americans have become carelessly oblivious to the historical struggle for the vast liberties they enjoy but the preservation of which they now seem to disregard.

Dr. Cobin's book is part of the growing literature of case studies legal-philosophical treatises that provide economic analyses of public policy. While many other studies about regulation have been produced, Dr. Cobin has provided a major contribution to local regulatory issues. Building regulation and the modern system of private property rights are areas which are taken for granted by most people. However, this book reveals that there are more than trivial policy defects in our system of private property rights. Dr. Cobin has established that there is a real need to re-examine how private property rights are regulated. In the same way that public choice theory has exploded the notion of altruistic bureaucrats and politicians, who serve the interest of the public to the disregard their private interests, Dr. Cobin's book unmasks local building regulations whose ostensible purposes are to serve the public interest.

The results of Dr. Cobin's work lead us into a new dimension of public policy deliberation, i.e., whether government regulations produce more or less safety than that provided through the market 'regulation.' If government regulations reduce the safety and quality of goods or services, then it is in the public interest to revise or eliminate such regulation. Dr. Cobin has also done a commendable job of demonstrating that market provision can produce efficient and effective regulation, even for informational services that are assumed to be public goods. After demonstrating the failings of government regulation and provision of information about quality, Dr. Cobin shows us that markets can do in building and safety regulations what it has done the rare coin and gemstone industries.

Dr. Cobin's work goes even further. In addition to suggesting an adequate policy alternative for a failing system of building regulation, he also resurrects an alternate legal philosophy of real property. This system, known as 'allodialism,' is not a novel concept but has deep roots in Western civilization. However, it has been obfuscated over the years in favor of feudalism. It may surprise many readers that the American system of real property, not to mention the rest of the world's is essentially feudalistic. This fact should be repugnant in America where the Founding Fathers sought to abrogate all fetters of tyranny and oppression. An allodial real property system would make private property rights absolute and not subject to any form of coercive taxation or regulation. Subsequently, allodialism would serve to secure rights to property as guaranteed by the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence.

Hopefully, this study will provide the impetus for scholarship, in both case studies of local regulation and renewed discussion and analysis of allodial property rights. Not only can this book be added to the annals of regulatory studies which support market over government provision, but its philosophical basis can be used in basic disciplines, including law, economics, philosophy, political science and history. Dr. Cobin has made an important contribution to an important public policy area in a novel and frequently overlooked way.

A compelling example of government failure and theory why.
This book provides evidence that the state has failed to provide building safety regulation in the public interest. Useful market alternatives are suggested to replace government regulation. A must read for anyone studying urban regulation or interested in policy applications from free market economics.
