Good intro
John Pinder is a major authority in the literature of the European Union and its evolution from the European Coal and Steel Community. Pinder, traces the history of Western Europe after the Second World War. He describes the accounts of the Europeans as they deal with post war life and the zealousness of creating an institution that would becaome the European union of today. From the small roots of the ECSC to the expansion into the social aspects of life to poltical expasnion and to geographical exspanion, Pinder gives detailed expalations. I highly recommend this book.

Classic
This is a classic in not only telling the story of the Chamberlains, particularly Lindy, the mother whose baby was taken by a dingo 20 years ago, but also about how people can be caught up in a maelstrom of media scrutiny.

I remember the events so well, and, like the rest of Australia, watched them unfold year by year.

The Northern territory government and the media have a lot to answer for. The NT remains a backwater of injustice to this day - most often directed towards Aborigines, but also, as demonstrated here, with invective directed towards another group outside the conventional mainstream.

The media reported in the most outrageously biased and one-sided fashion, and actually whipped up the populous into a frenzy of finger-pointing, gossiping hatred toward Mrs Chamberlain.

I am not at all religious, but to my mind Seventh Day Adventism doesn't even sit far outside the mainstream Christian tradition, yet we were encouraged to believe it was some sort of devil-worshipping Jim Jones type sect.

Eventually the government was forced to recognise the veracity of the Chamberlain's story. ironically, another person died on The Rock for the essential clue to be discovered - a tourist fell off and his body was found near the baby's matinee jacket. It is almost beyond belief the lengths the authorities went to to balme the parents, when most of the people closest to the event on that night verified or supported the Chamberlain's case. Yet those voices were drowned out for years.

Bryson did a wonderful job of bringing this story to public atttention, and some of the most important parts were effectively translated to the screen in the Meryl Streep movie (Cry In The Dark).

The Fabric of Hope: An Essay (Emory University Studies in Law and Religion)

Eschatologically provocative
Tinder's book is a thought-provoking foray into what the prospect of a thoroughly Christian hope (centered in the breaking in of God's kingdom) does for the individual, community, and political arena. He culls resources from thinkers such as Plato, Kierkegaard, Hegel, and Marx, examining how their perspectives mesh or conflict with human hope for a destiny that finally comes to end history. He takes up the spiritual discipline of suffering as a means of focusing not on the penultimate, but upon the ultimate. He examines what situational obedience has to do with recognition of human finitude within history. All of these ideas, while important on a grand scale, will cause the serious reader to reflect on his or her own despondency--do we know what real hope is?

The framers of the Constitution in their own words
An essential book for every American both young or old, male or female, Democrat or Republican. A delightful discovery on the need of God and guns (or perhaps swords) in the United States and the intolerance of a government in charge of all but answerable to noone. An undeniably perfect fit for todays culture.

Discover your roots from the men that gave their lives for the signing of the Constitution; true heroes. Their resolve was unquestionable and the love for country without reproach.

They brought us so far. We've walked away. Read it and weep. BK

Fire and Ashes: On the Front Lines of American Wildfire

EVEN BETTER THAN THE FIRST
Maclean's done it again, only this time he's done it better. His first book, FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN, was and still is a popular book with wildland firefighters. This one, though, will be a must-own for the summer army of boots-and-nomex firefighters -- and will surely be assigned as mandatory reading in many a fire training course. The collection of stories in FIRE AND ASHES proves up both Maclean's dogged pursuit of history and his determined focus on accuracy gained from 30 years in journalism. Covering many thousands of miles, dozens of interviews, and with painstaking attention to detail in his writing, Maclean has crafted a book that puts his readers out on the fireline. Unlike many authors who try to write about wildfire, Maclean makes no lame allowances for readers unfamiliar with the language and culture of the firefighter. He just explains it for them. His recounting of the 1999 Sadler incident -- in retrospect a problematic compilation of small "oops" decisions that resulted in near-disaster -- is a chilling read when one considers how close it came to being a disaster like South Canyon. His "Short History of Wildland Fire" and glossary of fire terms will be a go-to resource for firefighters -- structural and wildland both -- and for anyone curious enough to read about or write about fire. It's Maclean's reconstruction of the 1953 Rattlesnake Fire, though, that stands as the highlight of the book. It's a can't-put-down story that's finally been accurately researched and told (and illustrated), about a fire that's been a benchmark for safety lessons and fire behavior training for 50 years. Young men and women in fire camps across the West -- and the older ones too -- will be packing this book along in their red bags this summer, and well they should.
