Sometimes Desert Is Better Than the Meal
Ward Churchil and Jim Vander Wall have done an outstanding and meticulous job in assembling and explaining the FBI's secret war on dissent in America, no wonder America is plagued with criminals, the supposed "good guys" are all out on black bag jobs committing their own crimes!!

Since it is a well known historical fact that J. Edgar Hoover, America's semen stained supercop, was blackmailed by the mafia into silence, it stands to reason that he would need a new enemy to focus the attention of the American people. What better enemy than home grown political dissenters who would destroy the genteel American order--white men first.

The book focuses upon the FBI's most notorious episodes--the COINTELPRO efforts against the Communist Party USA, Socialist Workers Party, the New Left, the American Indian Movement and the Black Panthers as demonstrative proof of the Bureau's efforts to undermine and destroy the constitutional rights of all Americans.

It is, for me, the concluding chapter that ties everything together and offers some real life solutions to the peristent cancer that is the FBI. From 1956 to the "offical end" of COINTELPRO in 1971, the FBI committed:

* 2,218 separate actions.

*2,305 admitted warrantless telephone taps.

*697 "bugs against domestic political targets."

*57,486 CIA mail intercepts.

"During the various Congressional committee investigations, the Bureau carefully hid the facts of its involvement in the 1969 Hampton-Clark assassinations. Simultaneously, it was covering up its criminal witholding of exculpatory evidence in the murder trial of LA Panther leader Geronimo Pratt." page 303.

At the end, the authors offer the inescapable conclusion that priority number one is for the left to develop a strategy to come to grips with the FBI and the escalating power of "law enforcement" as well as the implications and consequences of the merging of the U.S. military and the domestic law enforcement appartus.

Churchill and Vander Wall have written an excellent book which recounts history and warns us of the impending scenario we face by ignoring the increased power of the FBI, the US military and law enforcement in general.

If history repeats itself we are all in trouble
For readers who may have forgoten what can happen when government intelligence agencies are given free rein, legally or not, to investigate and harass American citizens who question governmental policies, this is the primary source for a reminder.Tracing the long history of political repression in this country from the 1950s through the Vietnam era and the Civil Rights movement and examining recent FBI activities, this book belongs on any reader's shelf that values political freedom.
It is not a question of which political party you belong to or whether you are considered left or right on the political spectrum. If you are anxious about the future of civil liberties given the unprecedented power given to the government as the result of the Patriot Act and other recent legislation, this book should be required reading. It is indeed a fine balance between civil liberties and national security and this book will give the reader an idea of what is at stake and what unrestrained government is capable of doing.

Environmental Regulations and Corporate Strategy: A Nafta Perspective

From a review published in: International Affairs, Vol 76(1)
This is a refreshing, multi-disciplinary study that highlights the importance of firms, governments and international institutions in the regional and global marketplace. The authors, who draw on the disciplines of management, economics, political science and law, develop a model of complex institutional responsiveness based on an array of innovative firm strategies that have been implemented through the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to overcome environmental regulatory protectionism. Based on an analysis of trade-environment disputes in North America from 1980 to the present, the authors examined 24 leading case studies (of 84 relevant cases) and conducted 230 confidential interviews with senior executives and officials in governments, environmental groups and research centres. The cases focus on firms that have sought to benefit from environmental regulatory protection from free market competition (e.g. in agriculture, forestry and fishery) and on firms that have sought to defend themselves against this type of regulatory shelter (e.g. in automobiles and chemicals). Three fascinating and highly detailed cases on fuel, agriculture and the automotive industry are analysed through their complex institutional responsiveness model for which five levels of environmental regulation that can affect four types of firms are identified. Three major findings are presented in this pioneering work. First, NAFTA's environmental institutions benefit the regional ecology and all North American firms through increased competitiveness and better market access. Second, complex institutional responsiveness helps to explain the firm's political strategy in the face of the rising incidence of trade-environment friction within NAFTA (and on a global scale). Third, a NAFTA community of stakeholders is emerging from the firm's varied responses to highly complex issues, but there is still much to be done on a policy level to broaden and deepen this community.

Seminal Work on Impact of NAFTA's Enviro Side Agreements
Another important work by the Rugman, Kirton and Soloway trio. Building on their earlier writings, in this collection the focus is largely on the business impact of the environmental side agreements. These side agreements could form an important model for future treaties, so they are worthy of the close and careful study given here. This is a vital resource for a broad range of scholars and practicioners.

Good tool for learning about the EU.
I took a course on the European Union at the University of Pittsburgh with only the dimmest idea about what the EU was about. This book, one of the books assigned for the course, is a very readable, very understandable dissection of the EU's history, its structure and its internal politics. I highly recommend to anyone reading about the EU for the first time or taking a class on the EU.

A great learning tool!
John McCormick's book on European Union policy and politics is a great book for people who want to learn more about the EU. The book is broken up nicely into three parts: Part One deals with the evolution of the European Union and gives a good background on how the European Community began in the 1950's; to the evolution of the European Union up and through the Treaty of Maastericht. Part two discusses the institutions of the EU. The EU Parliament, Commission, Council of Ministers, Court of Justice, and the European Council; the book tells how each one works and what roles each body plays in government and politics. The third and final section talks about EU policies...from Education through Economics all EU policies are broken down and analyzed in the book. I think the book is a great tool for students learning about the EU and people who take an interest in European Politics. Believe me when I say..."you won't be dissappointed."

The Most Important Book
Actually, it's two books, Volume I and Volume II. But Professor John Myers' book EVIDENCE IN CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT CASES is the single most complete, current, and balanced resource there is for information on this very important topic. John Myers' work has been cited by over 150 courts nationwide, and with good reason. I have been working in the field of child abuse and neglect for many years and have used this book extensively. It's not a book that every lawyer or judge needs to have individually, although that would be great, but it is a book that every law office and court (criminal, juvenile, family) should have in its library. It gives citations to cases throughout the U.S., as well as to statutes. It reviews the literature and trends in this very area. And, of course, it gives the insights and assessments of Professor Myers on MANY areas of evidence that affect child abuse and neglect cases. This book is simply an invaluable resource for lawyers and judges working in the child abuse and neglect field, whether they be prosecutors, defense attorneys, children's attorneys, or judicial officers.

Invaluable resource for child abuse practioners.
Myers provides an excellent resource for practioners in the area of child abuse. Also includes citations to court cases addressing evidentiary issues.=

Excellent Book
A wonderful little book with the most important selections of The Federalist, each section followed by brief commentary connecting it to current situations.

Jefferson called the original the "best commentary on the principles of government ever written"; here are what some others have said about Dr. Saxey's excellent edition:

A "delectable book."
R. Emmett Tyrell, Jr.
The American Spectator

"A must read."
Mark Brunelle
The Oregon Observer

"Thank you...I will keep this important work in my office."
Clarence Thomas
The Supreme Court

"The rhetoric on Capitol Hill makes this book compulsory."
The Book Reader

Thought Provoking - Citizens/Historians, this is a MUST!
A very pleasant surprise, indeed! I am a normal, working class citizen and was given this book as a gift. My initial reaction was, "I will get to this when I can", but after turning the first 9 pages, I could not put it down!

Dr. Saxey's goal is the same as the original authors; his intent is to assist every voter in reading and understanding the Constitution, and he accomplishes that goal in style!

Saxey guides the reader through the Federalist papers step by step; first quoting the authors of the Federalist - James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay. Following each topic, he adds a short commentary of each section and then describes how past and present administrations have abided by or abused the Constition and the ramifications of doing so.

Dr. Saxey takes us on a journey of our political history and points out "red flags", misuse of government power and where our future as a Nation lies accordng to how the Constituiton has been interpreted in our time and ramifications if changes are not made. He points out the net effect of excessive legislation which has become epidemic, illustrates how the limitations of terms has been misunderstood as well as the effect of entrenched power based on a seniority system in the House of Representatives.

One of my favorite sections, on page 55 is regarding the character of those representing the people/states. Saxey states " Character matters. It matters not only in candidates for public office, but in the CITIZENS who vote for them" (emphasis added). Roderick Saxey quotes Alexis de Tocqueville who spoke of the greatness of America, and who said "America is great because she is good and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great"! How appropriate for these times. The delightful surprise here, is that the Author's personality shines through what could be for some, difficult reading. His humor and humility are evident and enjoyable enough that you wish you could sit at a fireside chat and probe his intellect and insight further. For passionate American's this is a must read. I recommend it for any US History course and for any person seeking citizenship into our Nation! If a second edition comes forth, I'd like to hear more from Dr. Saxey himself, as his discourse is insighful, logical, sensible.

As history teaches us, we must look where we are headed as a nation and to do that, we must re-evaluate what our Founding Fathers intended for America and her people. "The Federalist", by Dr. Roderick Saxey accomplishes this and stands apart from other Federalist publications. I recommend that you find it, read it and keep it on your desk! An excellent source of stimulating conversation!

Fundamentals of Personal Investing by M. John Sterba, Jr.
Every investor, not just lawyers, should read this book! Mr. Sterba drills down through all of the confusion and presents a clear, concise and entertaining book on the practicalities and realities of investing. His asset allocation approach to investment, utilizing no-load mutual funds, should be the holy grail for anyone seeking to manage almost any amount of capital in todays economic climate. I suspect that far less money would have been lost by the average investor in the turbulent markets of the past three years, had they read this book and utilized the disciplines Sterba recommends.

Succinct and practical
Fundamentals of Personal Investing combines the theoretical and real-world aspects of investing in a straightforward manner. I consider this book a solid guide for a range of investors: from the moderately experienced to the relatively sophisticated.

breaks the chains of those slaves of the law
I was a young man who struggled with the idea of doing great works to please my God. I would beat myself up for failing to be perfect and finally came to the point where I felt that God didn't care about me because He wouldn't give me to power to do "good". This book showed me that the problem was that I was trying to do "good" myself and not let God do "good" though me. Bottom line: if it was I doing the good works, then I would be the one that could take credit for it. Strombeck lets you know how grace works and how it is the only thing that we can depend on to do God's work. I strongly recommend this book to anyone claim to be a Christian.

encouragment for those slaves under the Law
I'm a Christian who has long struggled with making sense of how so many Christians could continue to live in sin as if it was just not worth trying to obey God. So for the longest time I made it my goal to show them that they were wrong and that one could walk and talk like Jesus. Well, I failed over and over and ended becoming upset with God. In my heart I wanted to do His will but felt that He had abandoned me because "I" couldn't obey his commandments. Well, Strombeck showed me what my horrible error was. The problem was that I was depending on myself, not God, to be a man of God. Jesus said that we need only to believe in Him. Not just acknowledging Him as Christ, but seeking Him daily with every part of our being. This is the only way I can avoid the snares of this evil world. If we could do it on our own, it would be us that deserved the credit. Strombeck's book will show you that you can't be perfect, but you can depend only on the Lord to make your paths straight. Because if you give yourself to Him fully, you will not fall into the pitfalls of the devil.

A worthwhile addition to your Deadlands library.
In 1868, the Great Quake rumbled through California. The entire coast shook itself apart and tumbled into the Pacific Ocean, and all the land nearby was torn apart by deep chasms. Ocean water rushed into these chasms, forming the Great Maze. Since then, the Maze has become the most lively, diverse, and dangerous part of the Weird West. It holds a fortune in gold, silver, and ghost rock, but it's rough and lawless territory with many powerful groups struggling for control. Only the toughest and smartest survive long enough to prosper.

The Deadlands Player's Guide contains enough basic information about the Maze to get you through a short visit to the area, but the Great Maze boxed set adds a lot of depth and color. If you are a marshal and you plan to write your own stories based in California, figure on picking up a copy sooner or later. It covers all the details of life in the Maze, so when you create the world for your posse it will be more compelling and realistic. If you are a member of the posse, you can start by borrowing your marshal's copy, but you'll probably want to get your own eventually. There are plenty of things in there to keep you interested.

The boxed set has half a dozen parts. The most important one is a 128-page sourcebook titled The Great Maze. It begins by covering some practical matters, like where the miners get fresh water and what they do with their ghost rock after they chisel it out of the ground. Then the book moves on to talk about the geography of the Maze, including details about certain places of interest. A whole chapter is devoted to the Chinese residents of California. The city of Shan Fan is run by a syndicate called Hsieh Chia Jen. There are also petty warlords, Chinese pirates, and even a Shaolin temple. Another chapter covers the city of Lost Angels, which is the most important port in the Maze. Other chapters contain information about the Native Americans in the area, common types of ships in the Maze, and the armies of the Union, the Confederacy, and Mexico. Along the way, the book introduces a lot of interesting characters that could pop up in your stories. Plus, there are four new character archetypes and eight new abominations.

The set also includes two smaller books. One is titled, Field Report #325: The Chinese Fighting Arts. It begins with a few pages about Chinese culture, and then gives you everything you need to build a martial artist, including new edges, hinderances, apptitudes, and special powers. The other small book is an adventure titled "Pass the Salt," which will have the posse chasing all over the Maze and meeting some of the major characters from the sourcebook.

In addition to the books, the set comes with a color map of the City of Lost Angels and the surrounding area. It also has layouts for two styles of boats that are common in the Maze, which you can use to stage water battles with miniatures.

To tell the truth, there's no reason for all of this to come in a box. The set doesn't include dice, or miniatures, or any other oddly shaped hunks of plastic that would rattle around. The folks at Pinnacle could have easily combined the two smaller books into the sourcebook, and sold it in shrink-wrap to keep the other loose bits of paper together. But since they've produced such an awesome line of games, maybe we can cut them a little slack.

No matter what style of game you're running, the Great Maze makes an excellent backdrop. Not only does it bristle with nifty plot hooks, but it's a completely new and fascinating landscape to explore. If you plan to spend a lot of time playing Deadlands, you should find a reason to head in that direction for a while. If you are brand new to the Deadlands system, then there are two or three essential core books that you'll need to buy first; but once you have those, The Great Maze boxed set will make a worthwhile addition to your library.

The Great Maze
This book is quite an amazing piece of literature. It contains martial arts rules for anyone who's ever wanted to be jackie chan and it also has tons of info on the great maze and to top it all of it contains and full lenth adventure for your posse. This book is definitely worth the moola.
