Not Bad
I took the corresponding class with Ms. Collette. So I am of course speaking of the book/class combination. It was quite valuable. Rather than just writing 'bindly', we learned to consider the effects of turns of phrase, metaphors etc. on the reader. It made us more aware of the way we write.

Sociology & Art critique the market's cooptation of culture.
An excellent discussion on the impact of the conservative shift on artistic commerce and production. Incisive dialouge between two of this generations most erudite (and honest) intellectuals. A breathe of clear air in an increasingly polluted cultural climate. Highly recommended

Good read to get started and get a good overview
This book gives a good introduction to argumentation theory and its twists and turns over the course of its existence. I found it helpful to get started, especially coming from a completely different field. It gives the essence of Toulmin and Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca but I would have liked to see a bit more on Austin and Searle. But then again the references mentioned are very extensive and can be followed up. All in all a good book if a bit pricey for students (whatever happened to the paperback cover?)

Goha (Tales from Egypt & the Arab World Series)
Published in Paperback by AMIDEAST Publications (1993)
Authors: Denys Johnson-Davies and Nessim Girgis
Amazon base price: $6.95
Average review score:

Who is Goha?
These short stories are all about the trickster/wiseman/fool called Goha in Egypt, but known by other names across the Arabian peninsula, Iraq and Iran. These ancient stories, set with modern illustrations are delightful to read and fun to tell. They are enjoyable to adults, and they even set small children giggling. This book is part of series of children's titles about life in Egypt, and manages to capture Goha's spirit.

The next best thing to being there in person
Some of my fondest memories of Ithaca and Cornell are of the Johnson Museum - and not just from my days as a student or a staff member here. My parents (one of whom, by the way, was responsible for publishing this book [here endeth the disclaimer]) were Cornell alums, and brought my brother and me here for the Museum's opening back in the early 1970s, and several other times since.

Apart from the spectacular views from the fifth and sixth floors, the Johnson Museum also affords the visitor a startlingly broad and deep permanent collection of many different genres of art. That collection is represented here in beautiful reproductions, along with excellent text, particularly by Museum Director Frank Robinson and Curator Nancy Green.

Of course nothing can really take the place of an in-person visit to the Johnson Museum (and to Cornell), especially because their seasonal exhibitions are almost always striking and interesting. But for everyone who might remember a rainy Thursday afternoon wandering the galleries, this book is an indispensible trip down fine art's memory lane.

Well-done visual expresion of jazz
When being able to place a face and look to an artist, the enjoyment of music is enhanced. I've only just begun my lifelong pursuit of jazz appreciation and this book really is a great tool for this. It creates a mental visualization of the artist for us. This is the only way to actually see most of the great artists that have left us, the only way to actually see into the world they lived and played in. So much of the music that they've left us was inspired by their surroundings and their daily interactions. Lowe has done an excellent job in creating this visual walk through the history of such a great artform. This is highly recommended to all those who appreciate jazz for the great artform it is.

A good source of informations. Useful !
It's a detailed and exhaustive guide to the "solo" careers of the Python's members. More than a biography, this is a sort of diary, recordering their pre- and post-Python works (movies, tv shows, books,etc...) It can be useful, especially for those who (like me!) live in places in which the Monty Python are not so famous, and can't easily find material regarding them !

thorough, if unexciting
Conceptual, rather than procedural teaching of math--that is what this book tries to encourage. Although elementary math teachers can often (but not always) find the right answers for math problems, they overwhelmingly are ignorant as to WHY they follow steps spelled out in the procedure they learned so long ago. A teacher who does not know why cannot teach why. This makes for students floating in a permanent math fog. This book tries to fill the gap by laying out math basics--the mathematical principles behind the steps. I am a bit disappointed that no mention is made of the identity properties, but all in all, this book does a good, if sterile job. If you want to get EXCITED about understanding elementary math, you need to read Liping Ma's Knowing and Teaching Elementary Math.

One Man By Himself,Portraits of Jon Serl
I received this beautiul book yesterday as a gift.Today I am ordering another copy to give to a friend. Visually the book is a delight. Messer, the young artist, captures the aging artist's eccentric personality and his stage in life with bold brushstrokes. The combination of fascinating paintings and a lively, engaging narrative make this an exquisite artbook not to be missed.
