Amazon base price: $25.00
Average review score:

everything you need to know and nothing more!
This book describes exactly how to put together an academic paper. This could be used for masters or doctoral level students as well as for college freshman and sophomores. Johnson describes the process of finding sources, taking notes, organizing your notes and looking for groups, drafting, and revising. He also gives the specifics of APA citations, reference pages, seriation, some basic grammar and other mechancis. An Masters or Doctoral student should buy this just for the section that describes exactly goes into each chapter of a thesis or dissertation. This book is short, to the point, and very easy to read and understand.

Inspiration to See Nature in a Fresh Way
Here's a great book for painting out of doors. The author, Cathy Johnson, includes information for beginners in a simple, concise manner with an introduction to various media, their use, strengths, and limitations. Suggestions for initial supplies is a very helpful feature. Simple and clear colored pictures illustrate techniques. Included is an excellent bibliography as well as a list of organized painting trips, both domestic and foreign.

The author's wide range of ideas for subject matter in landscape, trees, flowers, birds, butterflies, turtles, frogs and all kinds of small furry fauna is an inspiration to both beginners and experienced painters to get out their brushes and CREATE! Her ideas of simplifying distant landscapes or of taking a close view of a single flower, rock, or tree root will bring fresh ideas to try.

Having worked in the art discipline of a liberal arts college library for many years and currently painting and continuing to study books on painting, I recommend "Painting in Nature" with great enthusiasm.

That's It! - So much more on so many levels
That's It! Thoughts of Fantasies, Half-Truths, and Outright Lies is a startlingly frank exploration of an incredible range of common emotions and life experiences from a uniquely masculine and African-American perspective. The openess and honesty of this compilation of poems and short stories transcends the boundaries of race and gender to resonate with most readers, who have ever experienced love, loss, the exhilaration of the creative process, and the struggle to connect with a partner as well as friends, family, and community. Written with a refreshingly masculine point of view and with a perspicuity not often captured even by other male poets and authors, That's It! appeals to men by giving an articulate voice to many of the shared feelings and truths of the male experience, while welcoming women to a unique window on the male soul.

If you study thermodynamics - this book is a must have!
I was pleased to be introduced to the textbook Thermodynamic Loop Applications in Material Systems by D.L. Johnson and G.B. Stracher during the Fall of 1997 when I enrolled in a course entitled Geochemical Thermodynamics offered by the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences program at Georgia Institute of Technology. I am an Environmental Engineer with a traditional Civil Engineering background. I provide this background information on myself solely to indicate that I had been exposed to thermodynamics instruction from a different perspective during my undergraduate training. The book begins with 2 chapters that provide fundamental terms, equations, and thermodynamic laws that are essential to understanding subsequent chapters. The book advances rapidly, so the first 2 chapters serve as a readily accessible "home base" for quick reference. By the end of Chapter 2 the reader is fully prepared to be introduced to the thermodynamic loop (TL) concept of solving thermodynamic problems.

The TL analysis method is a revolutionary way to understand thermodynamics. I struggled with thermodynamics as an undergraduate student, but after studying with the aid of this text I finally grasped the fundamental concepts necessary to use thermodynamic principles in my own research endeavors. TL analysis allows the student to graphically "see" the thermodynamic problem. After learning TL analysis the reader will be able to derive thermodynamic formulas and relationships that previously were cumbersome and difficult to memorize.

Drs. Johnson and Stracher have taken great care to provide tables that summarize notation (which is consistently referenced throughout the book), a table of physical constants and conversion factors (which could otherwise lead students through frustrating reference searches), and appendices (which summarize the thermodynamic data necessary to solve example and exercise problems throughout the text). I frequently recommend this book to fellow students at Georgia Tech. Numerous students and professors have borrowed my book since 1997 and have found it to be useful for their own thermodynamic applications in Environmental Engineering. It's a small book packed with valuable information. I would recommend this book over any thermodynamic text I have consulted.

Brings back childhood memories!
This Dover publication is a wonderful collection of cuts
from magazines and children's publications from the
1910's and 1920's. The illustrations were collected by
the author and her family over the years. The collection
includes children of all ages and in all areas of life -
including various seasons - Christmas, Easter, Hallowe'en, - and children of different cultures. There
are some lovely sets of cut-outs - children with different
sets of clothing with tabs like the paper dolls we played
with as children. This book would be a wonderful source
of clipart for many applications, including scrapbooks.
Limited permission is given to use the cuts for graphic
and crafts applications. A companion publication by the
same author is 'Spot Illustrations from Women's
Magazines of the Teens and Twenties'.

Hey, Where's My Library?
Selecting, processing and making available audio and video products, CD-ROM, and online reference are not traditional librarian jobs. But the digitized traditional library has different concerns. The virtual library still needs collection and public service librarians, catalogers, and information processing experts. It also needs the corporate sector, funding agencies, and information producers and providers: the Library of Congress digitized historical collections on limited Congressional funds and huge private fundraising. Librarians have a pioneering tradition: barcodes before grocery stores; book sorting and shelving robots in Europe; cooperative cataloging and indexing for decades; the ILL code in the 1930s; and self-checkout. So they can handle the traditional acquisition of property and the digital acquisition of rights while plugging away at storing, finding and getting out information. Peggy Johnson and Bonnie MacEwan see to it that libraries will be VIRTUALLY YOURS whether you are librarian, staff or user. The book joins up with Pat Ensor's THE CYBRARIAN'S MANUAL, Joan Giesecke's PRACTICAL STRATEGIES FOR LIBRARY MANAGERS, Robert S. Want's LIBRARY OF CONGRESS ONLINE, and Anne Woodsworth's PATTERNS AND OPTIONS FOR MANAGING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ON CAMPUS.
