Zen Shaolin Karate: The Complete Practice, Philosophy and History

Superb Interpretations of Sanchin and Naihanchi
The title of this book, "Zen Shaolin Karate" unfortunately conjures the image of an Americanized kenpo style. Nothing is farther from the truth--Author Nathan Johnson offers a superb interpretation of two of the most widely practiced fundamental kata (forms) of Okinawa Karate, the Sanchin Kata of Goju Ryu, and the Naihanchi Kata of Shorin-ryu. Johnson has researched these two forms, and reconstructed them as he believes they were performed before being altered to teach to the masses. We see for the first tome in an English language publication, Sanchin performed open handed. Naihanchin is presented as one complete form in three parts (as researchers believe it was performed prior to Itosu's time). For both forms, bunkai emphasizing locking and grappling is demonstrated, including close up photos showing how the locks are performed.

Johnson is in essence, apparently attempting to reintroduce the older Chinese methods of study, a growing trend among some Okinawa Karate stylists. My one sticking point with this book is Johnson's lack of bibliographic sources, he isn't very specific about how he did his research and how he reached his conclusions. What were his influences, who did he talk to, who did he study with, what articles and volumes did he read? Johnson's second volume, "Barefoot Zen" does much to remedy these questions. Both volumes are excellent studies which will be helpful to anyone going through the stages of paring down and understanding thri art.

Good book for the practicioners of the art.
This book is excellent. It starts off giving the history and origin of Karate which is very interesting. Then it goes right to the point learning. If you want a book that teaches you to relax and also teaches you some self-defence this book is for you. If you learn by reading instructions for the applications of moves it includes that along with detailed pictures. This book is a must have for all martial artists.

Stumped at the Video Store?....
With this small deck of cards in my hand, I confidently entered our neighborhood video store for a taste of something completely different. If you've seen all the "new stuff" and have forgotten about or are overwhelmed by all the old titles, these cards are for you. My family and I can sit down beforehand, review the card suggestions, and have a few great ideas for our "movie night".

Fun little book, and very helpful
This is a fun little book. It's being little is my only complaint. For the price I would like to have had a bit more. However, it does have a lot of color photos nicely reproduced so you can really see the designs.

It has a nice mix of furniture, accessories and even appliances from that period. Books that showcase museum pieces are nice to look at but "Affordable Art Deco" is for the rest of us -- those who want to create a Deco look in our homes. The authors give an idea of what things should cost, which is very helpful. For instance, two lighted art glass cigarette stands should run $75-$150, depending on condition. I've seen the same stands at an antique store priced at $400. I thought that excessive but now I have backup.

I certainly don't regret purchasing "Affordable Art Deco" and would recommend it to anyone out there shopping for the real deal, e.g.; Not just looking at it in a museum.

Cash For Comment Scandal revealed
Rob Johnson, goes into great detail exposing the flaws, the history of the media and how it works. His stance on the matter is made rather clear, and the book is not to overpowering as it allows the reader to make their own mind on the mattter. Well worth a read it you want to find out all the details about John Laws, and Alan Jones..

Accessable information on a key practiotioner
This book is a very accesible account of Heathcote's work in the field. There are a number of articles on a variety of facets of her work. I first read this book when I was thinking about working with drama in a cross curricular context and this book has advice on teaching and learning not just in the drama class-room but in other subject areas and non-statutory settings. Heathcote's writing style is very accessable and her humble nature about her own work is refreshing to read.

content value review
This book is a collection of articles written by knowledgeable, practicing collection development librarians and is targeted to working librarians who find themselves searching for guidance in the course of their collection development duties. It begins with an introduction and overview that explains the need of the book, the historical pathway behind its creation, and the need for a broader comprehensive view of library management that integrates all media formats and information sources into the planning and policy process. The body of the book is made up of eleven articles that are divided into three sections, all individually written by practicing professionals who have expertise with library collection activities in a variety of public, academic and institutional facilities.

Although now a somewhat dated publication, specifically as to the multiple types of electronic information resources currently available for library use, this book remains a very good collection development and library management guide. Much of the information and decision process factors included are independent of technical changes and focus toward the people who have to make electronic era decisions which effect the types and levels of services librarys offer.

Good tips for textures
This book will not go into detail of what materials you need to paint in watercolor, nor will it teach you how to compose a picture or prepare you for creating masterpieces.

This book will teach you simple tips and tricks to creating different textures such as a rock surface or the bark of a tree. If one is not interested in painting mother nature, the book also demonstrates ways to create brick walls, animal fur, and even human skin.

The book depends on pictures to demonstrate its lessons but also provides some text to explain the lesson to the reader. All the images are in color and most lessons are in step-by-step format. I gave this book four stars instead of five because I feel it could have provided a bit more information of other textures. However, I did learn a great deal from its lessons and therefore cannot complain.

All in all, this book is a great asset to anyone who is attempting to learn how to paint textures in watercolor. The lessons it provides are most useful to amateurs but may prove useful to intermediate artists as well.

A Feast of Information
This is an extraordinarily thorough yet easily accessible survey of one of the world's most exhaustive recording careers. Aside from a few maddening typos (typical of all such books) you could not ask for a better-crafted discography. Perhaps an updated edition could include thumbnail images of the artwork -- at $[price] a pop, that seems like a reasonable request. Otherwise, this is essentially just a database that could be shifted to the web.
