"At the dawning of the new world, Judaism has the consciousness to possess, through its permanence, a function in the general economy of Being. No one can replace it. Someone has to exist in the world who is as old as the world. For Judaism, the great migrations of the people , the migrations among the people and the upheavals of history have never presented a deadly threat. It always found what remained to it. It has a painful experience of living on; its performance accustomed it to judging history and refusing to accept the verdict of a History that that proclaimed itself judge. Perhaps Jewish thought in general consists today in holding on more firmly than ever to this permanence and this eternity. Judaism has traversed history history without taking up history's causes. It has the power to judge, alone against all, the victory of visible and organized forces - if need be in order to reject them. Its head may be held high or its head may be down, but it is always stiff-necked. This temerity and this patience, which are as long as eternity itself, will perhaps be more necessary to humanity tomorrow or the day after tomorrow than they were yesterday or the day before." Within a few pages Doc and Raider develop their very unique personalities and by the end of the book they feel like your best friends. You will run a gamut of emotions while discovering these two characters' (pun intended) strengths and frailties. Amid the humor and often hilarious situations are moments of seriousness and even crisis. The ending isn't necessarily happy (it actually had me rather choked up), but you discover that love wins out in the end, even for two gay leathermen.
This is easily on a par with Tim Barela's Leonard and Larry. You won't regret reading this.

evaluation procedures, and resources for further study.
I found the chapter on autism particularly helpful as I had always been confused by the origins of this spectral disorder and did not realize all the variables involved in diagnosis.
I'm particularly grateful that their research and resources are extensive and well organized. There is an interactive website that is a great companion to the book complete with a message board, and chat room. The opportunity to dialog and collaborate with other educators seems essential to working with special needs students and I was happy to see they've created a forum for it online. This book had raised my consciousness and level of sensitivity regarding advocacy for children with special needs. I suspect I will be using it for years to come.

The chapter on giftedness is perhaps the best ever published.

Sammon is able to describe, in a very uncomplicated way, the historical, sociological and theological background of this man who was born the same year as the French Revolution. Marcellin Champagnat started his life with little education, and through hard work, eventually studied and became a priest and founder of an international Congregation of Roman Catholic teaching Brothers, the Marist Brothers of the Schools.
The book details the life of this very down to earth man. Champagnat was a priest who sometimes defied the stereotypes of priesthood of his day, even to the point of actually building the houses his Brothers would live in. He had an undying love for young people and strove to do all that he could for them, and to lead them to know and love God. The book describes the difficulties St. Marcellin had along the way, and how he overcame them all with determination, prayer, and hard work.
Sammon's treatment of him goes beyond what many biographies present. He not only describes his life and mission, but delves into the psychological motivations that moved him. What emerges is a clear and informative life of a saint who is a very real person, not just a plaster image of what a saint should be! I highly recommend this book.
