A must if you have money problems.
As a psychologist, I suggest this book for anyone who has recurrent money problems. It asks the right questions and helps you find some helpful answers to get this aspect of your life in order.

I highly recommend this book.

Excellent
I found this book to be excellent as far as dealing with debt and money problems. Yvonne Kaye is a counselor who happens to live in my local area and gives many seminars. She writes like someone who knows what they are talking about on the subject because she does know, she was a person who self-describes herself as a person who was in debt, addicted to the spending/debt habit and was co-dependent in it. Yvonne Kaye is direct. She also points out that just because you're rich doesn't mean you don't have money problems! She is also lighthearted and has a sense of humor about all of it. I would recommend this book highly to anyone who is in need of getting out of debt and in a financial bind. M. Wood - AOL Subscriber and Amazon Customer (Wmonica@aol.com) I would recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with debt

A collection highly memorable and engaging
Emmanuel Levinas takes Jewish thought to new levels, adding very new, yet very ancient ways of thinking into his works. He has several highly recognized works in the philosphy world- "Time and the Other", amd "Existence and Existents", but his works that build directly off of Jewish thought (such as this one) are my favorites. He manages to cut through the shell of everything and shed a beautiful yet heavy light on life.... I think it would be more fitting to put a Levinas quotes from Difficult Freedom in this review, and let you see for yourself.

"At the dawning of the new world, Judaism has the consciousness to possess, through its permanence, a function in the general economy of Being. No one can replace it. Someone has to exist in the world who is as old as the world. For Judaism, the great migrations of the people , the migrations among the people and the upheavals of history have never presented a deadly threat. It always found what remained to it. It has a painful experience of living on; its performance accustomed it to judging history and refusing to accept the verdict of a History that that proclaimed itself judge. Perhaps Jewish thought in general consists today in holding on more firmly than ever to this permanence and this eternity. Judaism has traversed history history without taking up history's causes. It has the power to judge, alone against all, the victory of visible and organized forces - if need be in order to reject them. Its head may be held high or its head may be down, but it is always stiff-necked. This temerity and this patience, which are as long as eternity itself, will perhaps be more necessary to humanity tomorrow or the day after tomorrow than they were yesterday or the day before." Difficult Freedom, p.166

difficult to read, perhaps, but will open up new worlds!
Several essays on Jewish issues and a brief and quirky, incomplete autobiography of Levinas, perhaps the finest thinker in post-modern Jewish philosophy. In this little volume are commentaries on Biblical and talmudic material, thoughts about current philosophical trends, what it means to be a Jew in the modern and post-holocaust world by a thoughtful survivor, and his unique wordplay. This book will shake your assumptions to their foundations. Never a casual read, but amazing to study.

A pictures says a thousand words...
...and Sean Martin's Doc and Raider comics are no exception. I have never anyone with the ability to convey emotion through simply drawn, single panel cartoons with the deftness Mr. Martin displays.

Within a few pages Doc and Raider develop their very unique personalities and by the end of the book they feel like your best friends. You will run a gamut of emotions while discovering these two characters' (pun intended) strengths and frailties. Amid the humor and often hilarious situations are moments of seriousness and even crisis. The ending isn't necessarily happy (it actually had me rather choked up), but you discover that love wins out in the end, even for two gay leathermen.

This is easily on a par with Tim Barela's Leonard and Larry. You won't regret reading this.

DOC & RAIDER is the best gay comic around!
Doc & Raider is one of the best gay comics available to read today! Tackling everything from the honest libido and physicality of a male to male relationship to HIV and Gay marriage, Sean Martin can find a way to make even the most normal daytoday stuff eye opening and remarkable. If you are gay, or have someone close to you that is, you HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK! It's adorable and a must have for any gay coffee table around.

Rhythm and Blues
Who said no one reads poetry. I found this book to be enlightening and enjoyable. It has street savvy, multi-cultural charachters, empathetic characters, and a rhythm that will get you going to the beat. I've heard Sean Thomas Dougherty read from his book, and I can say that I was not only entertained, but emotionally stirred. Mr. Dougherty delivered these poems from his heart, using language that was both captivating and enthralling. This book of poems reveals an emerging talent; he is a poet of insight and wisdom, as his poems bear out. These are poems for the masses--a must read for anyone who loves the play of language.

A Beautiful Book
As with any other book, the truest way to see its beauty is to read it for yourself. But I can tell you that these are gorgeous poems, ones that should be read out loud because they sound like songs. Sean Thomas Dougherty can turn a phrase --"walking like she's asking for applause" -- but even more he can hit you where you live. Whether the poem is an elegy for a childhood friend, a tribute to a step-father, a celebration of "booty," or a rumination on politics -- both public and street (and don't let that scare you away from the book; the poems don't preach) -- Doughtery doesn't shy away from telling the truth. He also has a wicked sense of humor. I've recommended this book to all my friends -- even the ones who don't like poetry.

A must have book
A well organized and thought provoking book, the authors successfully translates Special Education topics into easy to comprehend case studies, sidebars, and resources without overwhelming readers with medical terminology. Each chapter contains a vignette- a short portrait of students, parents and teachers- which humanizes the exceptionality under discussion. Special features include tips for inclusion, effective teaching practices,
evaluation procedures, and resources for further study.

I found the chapter on autism particularly helpful as I had always been confused by the origins of this spectral disorder and did not realize all the variables involved in diagnosis.
I'm particularly grateful that their research and resources are extensive and well organized. There is an interactive website that is a great companion to the book complete with a message board, and chat room. The opportunity to dialog and collaborate with other educators seems essential to working with special needs students and I was happy to see they've created a forum for it online. This book had raised my consciousness and level of sensitivity regarding advocacy for children with special needs. I suspect I will be using it for years to come.

Outstanding humanistic approach to disability and ability
This textbook is a nuts and bolts approach to special education that recognizes disability but doesn't accept predefined educational limitations. There is no telling how far a learning disabled child can go until that particular child is put to the test in a caring and supportive environment.

The chapter on giftedness is perhaps the best ever published.

The best I've read in years!
What a delight! I haven't read stories like these since I read Winnie the Pooh to my little boy. He's in fourth grade now, and heard me reading F'Lump's Adventures to his little sister (2nd grade). The next night when I was going to read the next chapter to her, I found the book under his pillow! Look out AA Milne! Here comes F'Lump!

A Good Read
I thought Alice's Adventures were weird! The Woods may not be Wonderland, but this dragon and his friends sure run into some odd characters. My third grader loved it. Good job!

First commercial pilot in Anchorage
Trained as a pilot during World War I, Russel Merrill was determined to spend his life flying. His love of flight lured him from Oregon to Alaska, the far frontier of aviation, where Merrill piloted the first airplanes to fly into Petersburg, Wrangell, Kodiak, and Anchorage. FLYING COLD chronicles Merrill's daring 750-mile journey across the Gulf of Alaska in a flying boat with a single small motor, his first rescue mission by air, crash landings, and strandings. In 1928, Merrill nearly died after being forced down in the Arctic, showing up weeks later, half dead, but still carrying a cup of rice he had saved for an "emergency." Many photos. A great read.

Outstanding book on early alaskan aviation!
Heroic account of how Russell Hyde Merrill brought aviation to Anchorage Alaska. This book is a must read for pilots and anyone interested in Alaskan History and bush pilots. Merrill was an ex Navy pilot who was the fist man to fly into Petrsburg,Wrangell.Kodiak and Anchorage. He discovered Merrill Pass in the Alaska Range and put Anchorage on the map as the "Tranportation Hub of Alaska" He brought aviation to Anchorage in 1927 the same year that Lindberg crossed the Atlantic. He faced incredible hardships and pioneered air routes all over Alaska that are still used today. He was a true hero and a very thoughtfull and kind man whose mark on aviation and Alaska is still very evident even today. He was lost over Cook inlet on 9/16/29. He was never found, but it is evident he went down and perished in the frigid water off Tyonek Alaska. Merrill Field(very busy general aviation airport in Anchorage) and Merrill Pass(important pass to the west through the Alaska Range)bear his name.In Alaska we all stand on the shoulders of this great man.

A Heart That Knew No Bounds: The Life and Mission of Saint Marcellin Champagnat

The Book Reader, Fall/Winter 2000
"Canonized in 1999, Champagnat was an early member and priest of the Society of Mary and founder of its Little Brothers (the Institute of the Marist Brothers). Author Sammon is the Vicar General of the Marist Brothers and he presents in an easy-to-read manner the difficult times and life of St. Marcellin Champagnat. Born during the Revolution in France, he lived only fifty-one years. In the seminary, he was part of a group "made up of seminarians who were a familiar sight in the taverns of the town." Sammon writes for the modern temperment that needs to know the warts along with the shining myth. The heresy of Jansenism, a moral theology for the elect, influenced Marcellin's study for awhile. He began teaching and "by February 1822 the Institute was made up of ten brothers." There is the miracle in the snow, a serious illness from which he recovers, persistent financial problems for the schools, and an environment of increasing bitter anti-religious sentiment during the revolution in France. Simplicity and humility were Champagnat's outstanding virtues. This is the tale of a man growing past his problems to sainthood. Sammon writes with that same simplicity and humility, and with a fine erudition that moves comfortably from prayer to revolution, from submissiveness to the cry for social justice. Illuminating."

A Down to Earth Saint
Sean Sammon's short biography of St. Marcellin Champagnat is definitely worth reading for anyone who is interested in the life of the Catholic Church and the people they call "Saints".

Sammon is able to describe, in a very uncomplicated way, the historical, sociological and theological background of this man who was born the same year as the French Revolution. Marcellin Champagnat started his life with little education, and through hard work, eventually studied and became a priest and founder of an international Congregation of Roman Catholic teaching Brothers, the Marist Brothers of the Schools.

The book details the life of this very down to earth man. Champagnat was a priest who sometimes defied the stereotypes of priesthood of his day, even to the point of actually building the houses his Brothers would live in. He had an undying love for young people and strove to do all that he could for them, and to lead them to know and love God. The book describes the difficulties St. Marcellin had along the way, and how he overcame them all with determination, prayer, and hard work.

Sammon's treatment of him goes beyond what many biographies present. He not only describes his life and mission, but delves into the psychological motivations that moved him. What emerges is a clear and informative life of a saint who is a very real person, not just a plaster image of what a saint should be! I highly recommend this book.

Historical Dictionary of Terrorism

An Essential Reference
This book is an essential reference for those that are involved in researching terrorism. As the below reviewer cites, there is a timeline of key events and an A-Z of terms and organizations, as well as a very extensive bibliography/recommended reading section. I use this book so often, that it no longer has a place on the shelf, it sits on my desk. A very impressive effort on the authors' part. Outstanding.

Terrorism from A to Z
The Historical Dictionary of Terrorism by Sean Anderson and Stephen Sloan provides a ready reference into the multifaceted topic of terrorism. The authors literally go through the breadth of terrorism from A to Z--including informative entries on groups, concepts, individuals. The work includes an extensive bibliography that is helpful in continuing research on the listed topics. The Dictionary also contains a chronology of significant incidents, ideas and personalities pertaining to terrorism from A.D. 66 to 1994. This 450 page work has been an essential reference tool for me as an analyst and an academic. I have used the Dictionary to refresh my memory of groups and individuals as I write, as well as, before I teach a college class on issues of terrorism. While I would like more depth on some of the entries, the entries provide enough material to answer most of my questions, or at least point me in the right direction. It is one of my most used books in my terrorism library.
