Mark My Words: Five Emerging Poets

Five Emerging -- but Accomplished -- Poets
Too often when reading a literary journal, I happen upon a wonderful poem by a writer who does not yet have a book to his/her name and I just wished that there were more. Well, this fine collection includes a healthy set of poems by five new voices: Lisa Sperber, Sean McDonnell, Angela Garcia, Eric Gudas and Maria Melendez (who has a chapbook from Swan Scythe Press entitled, "Base Pairs," a must buy). "Mark My Words," which is edited by the poet Francisco Aragon, brings us five innovative, talented poets at the beginning of their careers who will, no doubt, bring us great joy in the years to come. Some of my favorites in this anthology include Garcia's "The Crows in Dry Season," Melendez's "Remedy," and McDonnell's "The Heart is Not a Zero." Each set of poems includes an introduction by a more established writer. Bravo!

Great guide
This guide book gives you all you need to get to an area to climb and leaves just enough out that the fun in finding the area is still part of the climbing trip. Great route discriptions, this should be a must for your guide book collection for when you are off on that wild road trip you can stop and get some climbing in before or after you have crossed that great void known as Kansas.

A rare work that diivides history into 'before' and 'after'
The Lava Beds war erupts in Nov. 1872 near Tule Lake (then known as Lake Rhett) at the California-Oregon border with a bungled attempt to arrest Captain Jack, leader of a band of free-roaming Modoc Indians. Sean Belanger presents the ensuing conflict as a seminal event in Western history, one of those rare moments that divide history between 'before' and 'after' - in this case, Western History. Belanger's standpoint is that two conflicting sets of Indian policies dominated in the 1870s: the first - William Penn's idealized evangelization into an agrarian ideal ; the second: outright elimination of peoples that might resist Manifest Destiny. Little Bighorn and Wounded Knee might never have occurred without the Modoc War. Thanks to Sean Belanger for explaining this to us. The text consists in brilliantly crafted novelized history, innovative, and lively. I found myself reading it over and over again, as if facing Captain Jack, Gen. Canby, and Pres. Ulysses Grant.

Worth Reading? Absolutely.
This book was published as the Post Cold War world was becoming a fact of life. Certainly, the story of die-hards in the KGB wanting to hang on to the old ways isn't exactly new, but it still makes for compelling human drama. A variety of characters is introduced, each of them truly human, in their own ways as opposed to being cardboard characters that are to be knocked down or left standing when the shooting starts.

Beautiful & diverse: Burning Man
Mixed world music technologized, speaking of peace and curiosity. The musical accompaniment to Drama in the Desert makes an excellent background to time spent seeking random meanings.

Sean Abreau uses the world as a palatte for this album. Enjoy it and dream of what you will create tomorrow.
