The Best of Andrew Murray on Prayer: A Daily Devotional Journal

Spiritual growth
Murray's devotional/journal has been exactly what I was looking for to draw even closer to the Lord. Spending just 15-30 minutes a day by reading Scripture, reading a short commentary on that Scripture, journaling what you feel the Lord saying to you through this passage, and then a closing prayer. Your quiet time with the Lord will never be the same!

Highly amusing
Shane Molondy is one of Australia's newer and more succesful crime writers. This book is set in the dying days of the Victorian Labour government in the early 90's before it was voted out of office in a landslide. The hero Murray Whelan works as a staffer to a Labour Cabinet minister and faces the problems of a dying government.

In addition to these problems he is divorced and his son goes missing. A short time later the son of a rich transport magnate is murdered and Whelan becomes a suspect.

The book is hysterically funny a sort of Australian Carl Hiaasen.
It also conveys a feel for both the political world and the inner suburbs of Melbourne. One of the more enjoyable crime novels to come out in some time.

Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman
I read this book when it was originaaly published in 1976. Although Michele Wallace was a relatively young black woman (still in her twenties as I remember)I was most impressed by the maturity of her insights regarding both black men and black women. Her intent seemed to be to point out areas that both genders needed to look at if the race as a whole was to make any progress.

In both sections of her book, Wallace focused our attention on "male privilege" and how it translated into black "macho-ness", with the resultant effect that black men are as guilty of taking for themselves unearned advantages over black women as white people are guilty of taking for themselves unearned advantages over black people. She pointed out that black women continued to nurture the race physically, emotionally, and spiritually, and that the convenience of the self-sacrificing "superwoman image" (which black women willingly accept) allowed the predominatly male leaders of the civil rights movement to discount the interests and issues of black women, much like white slaveholders did; the typical black superwoman served only as an ancillary utility for black men. Wallace revealed to the world that black women, more often than not, were still "sleeping with the enemy."

Wallace was virulently attacked by almost every black "leader" who could get herself (yes, even women) and himself heard. However, if you re-read the book today, you cannot deny the fact that she was prescient in her observations and conclusions. The problems which she identified then still exist today.

I would recommend this book as a basic text for every black women's college. It should be discussed whereever concerned black people convene.

Vibrant!
An incredibly vibrant combination of words and images. Excellent poetry choices that emphasize the exhuberant and the life-affirming in Hughes' poetry without ignoring the hardships he was so brilliant at expressing. The collages are a perfect counter-point to the words--bringing to life the feelings and thoughts expressed in the verses.

Duke Ellington called Albert Murray "The Unsquarest Cat I Know." This book shows why - Murray's style manages to be insightful without being pretentious.

a very intering work
James Stewart, Second Earl of Moray was murdered on 7 February 1592 by a group under the command of George Gordon Sixth Earl of Huntly. The books is a detailed history drawn from records of that period, demonstrating the murder was a result of the inevitable power struggle of the two leading families in the Northeast of Scotland. It traces the consequences that were serious enough to push King James to leave Edinburgh and the compromise with the Kirk, and notes the Earl of Huntly was never punished for his deed.

Moray figured very heavily in two ballads dealing with his murder, an expression of the outrage over his murder by the people. Ives traces their history and origins. Even includes the music for them.

A Book of Days

a great way to write your history
A book of days is a great way to write down meaningful things that have happened to you. Using it as a mini journal or a timetable, this book is basically a list of the days of the year without a specific year. You keep it year after year (instead of throwing it away like a calendar) and write down anything significant that happened to you on a particular date. Over the years it fills up with short memos of important events and helps you to remember those special milestones without having to write extensively in a journal or run through lengthy volumes to find when something happened. This particular book of days is creatively designed by Claire Murray, a New England Illustrator, who focuses on the beauty that is found in nature. Each month begins with a attractive example of Murray's work while the covers of the book are carefully ornamented with borders and designs inspired by her Nantucket gardens. The book is compact and perfect for beginning the simple legacy that is you.

Awesome Book
My Aunt is Jaye's friend, so I got to read the book early when I met Jaye. I couldn't put it down. It is about a boy (Pip) and how he has to get consoling or get expelled. The book was highly interesting and I recommend it to ANYONE! I can't wait to get a copy of it myself, so I can read it again!
