A Sleeper with Style
My older sister turned me onto this book - and she was right, as older sisters often are. It is a real gem. She discovered it when she was Downunder on holiday last month and brought it back with her. The author is an Australian journalist who writes insightful and human stories. Half the book features Australian writers, half features American, English and Canadian authors. Each chapter takes a different approach and you end it wanting more. I liked the humor, I liked the sharp observations, I liked the way he made me feel as if I had met the subjects. I just wish American journalists wrote like this - read it, you will enjoy the experience.

Mr Lunch dishes up a literary feast
It's fascinating when writers are put in the spotlight - some flourish and some flounder. This collection became compulsive bedside reading for me - it's not heavy on literary theory but it sure revealed the people behind the author's cloak in a personal, perceptive and frequently funny way. I really got the feeling that I was meeting the people interviewed - warts and all. Yet it was done so as to leave dignity intact. Vanities, secrets and courage were all revealed. It made me want to rush out and buy many of the subjects' books. I guess the best comment is that I was sorry to finish. I also liked the way the authors were such an international range - and I recommend the chapters on Antonella Gambotto, Kinky Friedman, Morris West and Brian Keenan in particular. More please.

Comprehensive, well-organized, easy to read and understand!
Dr. Murray really has written a "whole body" book. By coming from the naturopathic viewpoint, he has made achieving and maintaining optimum health an obtainable goal without a lot of side-effect inducing prescriptions. He does not just list a series of steps to follow, but makes the reader a participant and advocate for his or her own health by providing explanations as to why the procedures work. He also provides rating scales so that the reader can prioritize the steps by personal need. If I can only have one health book, this is the one.

Couldn't put it down.
Last night I sat on the floor of my local bookstore enthralled in this book. As it is not yet payday and cheaper on Amazon, I didn't buy it. But, what a book. It is so easily organized. Besides the basic and known aging issues, Murray addresses others as well. He gives several "tune-up tiips" for each concern. He weaves in the words of Norman Cousins. He gives facts as well as suggestions for herbal, botanical and lifestyle treatments. I don't want to get too obsessed with aging, but I do want to know which supplements I can be incorporating into my diet. This book really helps me do that.

A Must Read for Family Therapists
This book explains Bowen's Extended Family Therapy Theory. This is one of the most important family systems theories in the history of family therapy and it is still one of the most widely used theories for working with families. Anyone that is studying family therapy should read this book as it is the seminal work on Bowen Therapy. Essential ideas such as triangling, emotional fusion, and intergenerational transmission are well explained.

One of the best things about this book is that it is highly readable. This book can be beneficial to anyone interested in learning more about families. It can be helpful to the lay person as well as to the professional family therapist.

Introduction to natural sytems
A rich introduction to Murray Bowen's natural systems theory. Explains relevance of the theory to clinical work with families, couples, and individuals. Also, briefly explores and contrasts the relationship of Bowen theory to sociobiology, evolutionary neurology, and analytic theory. Case illustrations are clear and helpful. Would recommend to social workers, psychologist, biologists, and those interested in a natural systems approach to human behavior. Although strong on evaluation and descriptions concerning emotional processes in human families and groups, there is less attention to therapy techiques. More of a book about thinking on relationships, than one of the clinical "how to" kind of presentations that have become standard fare in the family therapy field. I have read through Dr. Kerr's text several times and have studied its chapters separately. Each reread reveals additional applications and insights into the theory. Surely, a book that can grow with you! Dr. Bowen's epilogue is an added jem in which he offers perhaps his last written description of the development of the theory and his belief in the relevance of theory to the future. Personally, the book has influenced both my private and professional life.

Family Therapy in Clinical Practice

Read this book if you know any people
It's rare to find books that are both academically credible and accessible to the layperson. This book is the exception, and the content is truly life changing. It is unfortunate that most of the people who read this book are psychologists or psychiatrists who see it as "just another method" and go back to their simplistic "find the problem and fix it" techniques.

Reading this book has helped me understand myself, my family, my work environment, my social environment, and human culture.

The family is seen as a unit vs. a collection of individuals
Dr. Bowen begins by exploring the mother/child bond to understand human functioning. Soon fathers are seen as vital to this understanding, then the nuclear and extended family. Multi-generational patterns, cutoffs, sibling positions, and triangles are some of the family issues explored. Bowen shows how this broad family perspective inpacts family therapy, as well as understanding societal emotional process.

It's not just about selling!
This is not just a sales book. It's about how to structure your business with truth and integrity, how to put your clients needs first, and how to have the guts to only do the kind of business that you really want to have. Murray nails one of the great truths of investing: most investors cannot reach their goals without investing mostly or entirely in stocks, and catering to their fears and helping them invest partially or completely in bonds can be viewed as a disservice to them. Murray suggests that if you cannot convince a prospective client of this fact, then they do not deserve you as an adviser. While I do not accept everything he says as gospel, I have been heavily influenced by his books and articles, and my investment advisory practice has thrived, even through the recent market decline. I continue to read his stuff whenever it comes out -- and you should too, if you're interested in building a business that will not only be profitable -- you will be proud to have it.

How to REALLY sell investments!
This book focuses on the client-needs approach of selling investments. It is a sales book that teaches how to use the right words to close the sale and teaches the registered representative why the "hot" investment is not always the "right" investment. Further, it teaches that the "right" investment is always the "right" sale.

Fascinating journal of a great man of God
I wish more great Christians had kept journals. Reading about someone's struggles in a biography sometimes seems a little too broad; lots of emotion is distilled down to a few pages. Reading about the day-by day-successes and failures of great Christians is much more realistic, far easier to apply in my own walk with God.

This is the four-year journal of George Whitefield, considered one of the co-founders, along with John Wesley, of the Methodists, outstanding open-air preacher, and one of Christ's greatest soldiers. Whitefield's labors for the Lord are a great encouragement to me, as well as a gentle reminder of how little I myself do. And there is a wealth of historical information here as well. One really gets a feel for what a trans-Atlantic crossing was like, and there is considerable information on life in colonial America.

Pricey, but well worth it.

Interresting window into the early 1700's.
This book contains Rev. George Whitefields letters from the year 1737 through 1741. Origonally published in the 1700's, this is an accurate reprint of the origonal. Written in the old english language, this ends up not being a hinderance, but an asset, as you concentrate on the words, translating them in you mind to modern english. It is very interesting

Rest for the Wearied Soul--That's what this book is
I was first introduced to this little book over twenty years ago. Dr. Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, mentioned it in an audio tape, saying, "I usually don't recommend daily devotionals, but one has changed my life: Andrew Murrey's "God's Best Secrets." I have a well-worn hard-bound copy of the twenty-first printing (1976) that I keep coming back to and using as my daily meditation over several others by such luminaries as A.W. Tozer and J. Sidlow Baxter. Great as those are, Murray's book is simply the best--a well of faith-building insights that never runs dry. If you are evangelical in your theology, do yourself a favor and start the new year (the new millennium as I write this) with this book daily in hand.

A feast for the soul
This book is a daily cleanser for the soul. Reading just one devotional a day helps you to seek the Lord all day long. Andrew Murray does a great job on helping people realize that they need to come to God everyday and spend time with Him. It has really helped me do this, and, on top of that has brought me to a closer, more personal, relationship with God. This book covers many secrets on how to live a more profound Chritian walk. It's a great book to read over and over again because there's so much to get out of every devotional.

Golf Instruction
I am a 5 handicap and have over 300 instruction books. I read this book and immediately improved my game. It is all about one simple move...how you use the left shoulder. I can't believe everyone doesn't teach this way. What a shame.

Well worth the time.
He de-mystifies all the complicated swing thoughts that swarm in one's head. Though it does take some time to groove the swing he prescribes, I can feel the positive effects already after one practice session. If nothing else, the backswing is a keeper.
