I wanted some basic, beginner information about herbs and this book provided it. Some of it was too technical for me but that didn't stop me from learning a lot from the book. This is a good resource for cutting through some of the marketing hype about herbs.

I am a Natural Products Chemist and Cancer Researcher. I wanted a book on Herbal Remedies to share with my friends and family containing a synopsis based on the facts without the media-babble. This is an excellent book. It is not an exhaustive work but contains many entry point references to the scientific literature whilst still presenting core material in a manner easily understood by most interested parties. I have both the original and the revised version of this book. Both are excellent, the 2nd one however have a lot more information, and for those of us who really like a LOT of information you will get it in this book. Does it cover every herb used out there? Nope. Does it have wonderfully complete information for what it does cover? Yuppers. It has wonderful descriptions, uses, history, references, its a book well worth purchasing and being put at the top of ones list of books to buy

This is a perfect read for both teenagers and adults. Dan Murray tells it like it is, and gives true examples to back up his story. Its fun and easy to read, with comics included. He has been there, and done that, so his story relates to many issues that all teenagers face. After meeting him, and reading his book, I was motivated by many of his ideas and so were my students. This book is a great inspiration for all teenagers to get them motivated for success!

This book is written in a language kids can understand. Dan does not lecture. He does not preach. He does not judge. He does not use scare tactics. Instead, he shares incredibly personal stories about his own life - about the mistakes he made in youth and as a young adult, about his feelings of being a loser, about his sister's love and faith in him and about how, through a simple birthday card, she inspired him to turn his life around and become the successful (and, more importantly, happy) person he is today. In short, Dan offers a unique perspective that kids and young adults can relate to, and illustrates, through hard-hitting examples, why his "method to the madness" worked for him, and why it can work for you. Although Dan's book is geared to an audience much younger than I am, I believe it will appeal to people of all ages. I graduated from high school over 20 years ago and have been relatively successful in my professional life - first in marketing and then as an attorney - and yet, as I read Dan's book, I kept saying to myself, "Hey, I can do that!" I felt so inspired to get off my butt and actually follow through on some of the things I've been dreaming of doing for far too long! I highly recommend this book.

Enough delightful silliness to give both kids and grownups the giggles! Many of the references - Calvin Klein, Richard Nixon, Kramden and Norton - will only make sense to the grownups. Still, the rhythm of the text, the intricate and colorful illustrations, and the comforting message of even the naughty youngsters receiving Christmas presents make this a new holiday book that kids and their parents will want to read many times.

"How Murray Saved Christmas" is a truly hilarious kids' book (that adults will love, too.) We actually cracked up while we were reading it to our kids! The story is really entertaining and full of great jokes! That's not surprising, since the guy who wrote it used to write for The Simpsons. But the story of Murray is also very sweet and heartwarming - it's a great modern Christmas tale. We got a copy for our kids and will probably buy a bunch more to give as gifts.

Over the years I've read much about Santa Claus, but learned little about his friends. This book is a treasure of new information. Not only does it tell you how Murray saved Christmas, it also reveals the role a certain chocolate-chip cheesecake plays in Santa's weight problem.

This primer explains the simple virtue of humility from the Bible, with a fundamental focus on Jesus Christ. The author writes that Jesus Christ is the perfect model of humility. Jesus' modest birth, short life, and dramatic death all strikingly demonstrate His humility. In that, Christ being God incarnate did humble Himself in the service of others during His earthly life.

The book challenges the Christian reader to follow the sublime example of Jesus Christ in humility. This quality is described as total dependence on God in Christ, self-denial, and is contrary to pride and conceit. Also, it is a gateway to spiritual growth or a primary virtue. Murray explains that it is the Christian's responsibility to empty oneself of conceit and pride and to be filled up with the blessings of God. One such blessing is that the character free from pride and conceit is strong enough to take personal reprimands.

This reviewer found the heavy use of " death to self " language uncomfortable. However, I felt good about the book for it gave me great hope for personal spiritual growth in the down to earth virtue of humility.

This book is a must read for every Christian. I have never read a book which so accurately defines Biblical humility. Murray shows how humility is a mindset and lifestyle, not a feeling. Humility is the one-word definition of every Christian's life--or it should be. Humility is the one-word description of all Christ was and is and of how He lived as our example to follow. The most amazing truth in this book is that which speaks of humility being a quality not resulting from sin, but from grace (God working within the believer). Jesus was perfect in humility, yet He never sinned. Humility was required on the part of the Son of God in Heaven before He ever became incarnate, so humility is a heavenly, Godlike quality. We need not sin to be humble; we need to be like Jesus as found in Mark 10:45 to be humble. In other words, for a Christian to be perfectly humble, he/she must be the greatest servant, not the greatest sinner. And if one could be totally sinless in this life, he/she would be perfectly humble. This book is too short, too low in cost, and too easy to read (though challenging in virtually every sentence) for any Christian to have an excuse not to read it.

Driving Ambition "The Official Story of The McLaren F1" is a great book because it explains many things about the McLaren F1, from the thought of the car to the winning of the famous LeMans race. The book is 272 pages long, it has over 600 photographes and illustrations (the pictures in the book are great), it is hard covered and jacketed, and the book comes with a McLaren poster. Buy the book if you like McLarens, besides all you have to do is get a credit card type some numbers and wait a little while. Its worth it.

"Driving Ambition: The Official Inside Story of the McLaren F1" is an absolutely delightful book, especially from an engineer's perspective. It thoroughly and entertainingly tells the story of how an engineer and his team can achieve their creative dreams if allowed maximum latitude.

The overall quality of the text, diagrams and photographs is excellent. And it won't disappoint motorsport fans, either! This book would be well worth twice the asking price.

I have found this book to be brilliantly written by a young man that is indeed a word merchant. I couldn't put it down and dreaded for the end to come because I enjoyed it so much. I look forward to many more heart-happy works by Brian.

Once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down! I finished it in 2 days, so eager I was to find out how Brian overcame the inumerable challenges presented to him. From his troubled childhood, to his unconventional, yet down to earth lifestyle choices, this is a powerful, gripping account of the power of spirit to triumph. He chose not to give in to the abuse, anger and bitterness that surrounded him in his formative years.

This is a truly moving and powerful story of an individual's spiritual journey through darkness toward enlightenment. A must read for those of us who seek to better not only ourselves but also our environment. I have recommended this book to many friends and acquaintances. More power to you, Brian!

I love Brian's book, Once I started reading it , it was hard for me to put it down.. There were so many parts that I cried for him & everything he went through especially as a young child..

'Reason for the Hope Within' showcases contemporary papers in the philosophy of religion and philosophical theology by a clutch of up-and-coming Christian philosophers. The book's aim, in which it generally succeeds, is to introduce non-philosophers to the latest developments in Christian philosophy.
The authors attended a conference to road-test their material in apologetics workshops for Christian leaders and laity. The care taken to make their collected material accessible means that this volume would make an ideal 'reader' for the intelligent non-specialist, or for philosophy undergraduates. The general tone of the papers might be described as the philosophical equivalent of 'smart-casual', and one or two of the authors try just a little too hard to 'let their hair down'. This is not to accuse these papers of flippancy or a failure to treat their subjects with due seriousness when they are being serious.
This is a well produced book, edited with an introduction and a couple of papers by Professor Michael J. Murray, who co-edited 'Philosophy of Religion: The Big Questions'. It also comes with a foreword by Alvin Plantinga.
The range of subjects covered in sixteen chapters is admirable: pro and anti- theistic arguments, the relationship between faith and reason, religious pluralism, providence, religion and science, the incarnation and the trinity, resurrection, heaven and hell, miracles, ethics and the authority of scripture. I would highlight the scrupulous but nevertheless refreshing contributions from Robin Collins (on 'The Fine Tuning Design Argument' and 'Eastern Religions') for particular praise. The papers on 'Religion and Science' (W. Christopher Stewart) and 'The Authority of Scripture' (Douglas Blount on a topic infrequently covered in similar books) are also particularly edifying.
My main criticism for this compendium is that it has a distinct lack of suggested further reading, an oversight that will leave more advanced readers straining at the leash for greater detail and less advanced readers with no-where to advance towards. However, this is a fine body of accessible work that deserves attention from believers and non-believers alike.

This book should be required reading for every thinking Christian. The articles are very engaging and informative. Each contributor deals with a certain philosophical and/or theological issue from the problem of evil to divine action and human freedom. It is a compilation of some of the choice young Christian philosophers and apologists currently writing and researching. This title is a fresh assessment of some fairly thorny issues that have been discussed for centuries. Michael J. Murray (co-editor with Eleonore Stump for the book titled "Philosophy of Religion: The Big Questions) is the editor, while great thinkers such as Alvin Plantinga (who wrote the forward), J.P. Moreland ("Scaling the Secular City"), William J. Wainwright (editor of "Faith and Philosophy"), and Kelly James Clark ("Return to Reason") endorse the book. While the book anticipates that the reader already has a background knowledge in the areas covered, nonetheless, each article is so well articulated that the reader will either gain a better understanding or be able to develop a data base to launch them into further investigation. Thus, this work is a must for anyone interested in the areas of Philosophy of Religion and Christian Apologetics.

This book is tremendous!! As I read this book, it amazed me how each article had such new insights into the defense of the faith. You just can't buy this material anywhere else. This book is for the able reader(or someone who is relatively familiar with Evangelical Apologetics)who wants to know what Christian Scholars are thinking these days.

This book teaches mating tactics in so many ways!

* 50 patterns, 2 pages each
* For each pattern, a brief description of the elements which must be present. (This is similar to more advanced checkmate books, but at a very simple level.)
* Then, a couple of diagrams with arrows, showing the motion of the key pieces, with the moves written below. Very good for improving visualization, so you might spot the pattern later.
* Then another similar pattern, with 2 diagrams.
* Then a couple of positions for you to work out yourself, with solutions directly underneath.
* And finally, near the back of the book, a set of a few dozen positions. They include theme numbers for you to use as hints if necessary. Solutions are separate. This reinforces the learning.

These are all attacks on the castled king, not How To Take Advantage of Opening Blunders, or How To Solve Unlikely Chess Positions. These positions can actually occur in your games, even Fischerandom. The attacks are simple, but not obvious. Some are even by the Black pieces!

Nice hardcover for a thin book. Large diagrams. Feels great in your hands. Very well-designed.

Excellent book for someone rated between 1200 and 1500. I keep it in the bathroom. (I use different chess books in different ways. I take tactics puzzles to the gym. I always keep a chessboard handy for endgame books. I use a miniature set for studying openings. And I follow along with game anthologies by using a computer database and watching the computer analysis. And I am improving rapidly.)

Do one theme (two pages) per day. In two months you'll have actually finished an entire chessbook, and you'll miss it! You will find yourself improving your own defenses because you'll know what to look out for. One of the few chess books you'll actually read cover to cover, and it's cheap for a hardcover.

Concise - nothing but pattern recognition explanations & exercises. Written for children, but a great work-thru for anyone! I've seen nothing like it. Written by Grandmaster Murray Chandler.

After reading this book you'll be thinking of ways to play the game differently. !... This is not a beginner's book!... Not in my opinion anyway, I've been playing chess forever and I found moments of this book difficult but I also picked up a few gems that I had ignored in my journey down the road of chess. One cool development after reading this was a friend and I created a sacrifice game where losing key pieces was unavoidable by design. Our version of sacrifice includes a clause where if a player has not captured a piece within his first 5 moves (regardless of the consequences) the other player gets to take one of his pawns (any pawn) it goes on from there but you get the idea. Let me tell you, you get your [self] out there and find a way to capture a piece ASAP, along the way you also learn how to recover from some seriously bad moves and there is a lot of laughing and whooping and hollering (which I think chess needs more of) also a byproduct is finding the "State of the board" after a few minutes in a very unique disarray. This book will expand your vision of the game and get you eager to go at it with a little more vigor and less fear. After all, the best game of chess I ever played I lost. Playing with a spirit of adventure is gained in this book, may chess never bore you again.

Murray Rothbard once again cuts through the popular dogma and conventional knowledge which government would prefer we all simply take on faith. In this case, the subject is money and the creation of it. Rothbard, an exceptional economist, showcases his ability to set aside the technical jargon and higher mathematics of the profession in favor of language accessible to everyone. In "The Case Against the Fed," Professor Rothbard examines the roots of money, as a commodity with subjective value which, because of wide-spread acceptance and other desireable qualities, becomes a medium of exchange for a people. Furthermore, he exposes the government's, via the Federal Reserve, monopolization of money. Rothbard shows how the Fed uses the power of the printing press to tax the people via inflation, to redistribute income, and to artificailly lower the interest rate leading to the infamous "business cycle" and the roller coaster of depressions and booms which our eceonomy is regualraly subjected to. Anyone who is concerned about the purchasing power of their income and about the unemployment which the business cycle regularly brings should read this book. Professor Rothbard portrays the federal government as what it is: the self-proclaimed, legitimate counterfeiter

This book, written by Murray Rothbard, an economist and historian of fairly well known repute, is a scathing attack on not only the Federal Reserve, but the interests that created this institution. Rothbard is an adept writer, as he takes a concept that can be fairly daunting and makes it accessible to the those readers without an economics background. I considered trying to earn a degree in Economics, but abandoned it when I found out that most of it is tied to higher mathematics. I'm more interested in the conceptual side. Rothbard cuts out math and focuses on the real meat of the issue, the concepts that govern money supply and inflation.

The book starts by discussing the biggest problem with the Federal Reserve system, which is fractional reserve banking. Rothbard explains how this system is only functioning because people believe that it works. If there was a run on banks tomorrow, the entire financial system would collapse, because there isn't enough "real" money in reserve to cover all of the bank notes in circulation. Rothbard believes that it is the Fed that causes inflation, and that the Fed is the sole source of inflation in society. It can be a confusing issue to explain, but Rothbard makes it easy.

The rest of the book is a detailed history of the creation of the central banking system. This part can be confusing due to the numerous names that Rothbard flies through as he traces the events leading up to the creation of the Fed at Jekyll Island in 1911. Several interesting points are made during this history. Rothbard says that the Progressive movement in American history was essentially engineered by the money interests to help destroy competition. The little guy couldn't afford to put up with all the regulatory laws passed by the government. This opened the way for the giants, such as Morgan and Rockefeller to monopolize industry. Another point that Rothbard makes is that the history of the United States from after the Civil War to World War Two has essentially been controlled by two financial camps, Morgan and Rockefeller. In this way, he supports views held by many that the big money trust controls the country and owns all of the politicians, an issue that is very much in vogue today, and can be seen in the minor success of Ralph Nader's run for the White House. The book winds up by saying that the only way to restore sanity is to go back to the gold standard, where all money is backed up by an equivalent amount of either gold or silver.

I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in finance and economics. This book is good for anyone who just wants to understand what fractional reserve banking is and how it works. Rothbard died in 1995, but he has left a good account of himself behind for all to enjoy.

Ever since the creation of the Federal Reserve Board ("the Fed"), the American economy has been subject to a cycle of boom and bust. Most recently, we saw a bubble in technology stocks in general and telecommunication stocks in particular, fueled by the creation of credit. But no one wants to blame the culprit -- the Fed. Why has an institution that was created allegedly to bring stability to the economy caused such havoc? Equally importantly, why is an institution that has so much power so unaccountable?

Murray Rothbard (1926-1995) provides in this book an outstanding discussion of money, banking, the Fed, and U.S. monetary policy. As usual, Rothbard sees the "big picture." There was no need for a central bank, however the Banksters ' in combination with Big Business and Big Intellectuals -- pushed for the creation of the Fed. Rothbard's discussion of the battles between the Rockefellers and the House of Morgan is fascinating. (See his Wall Street, Banks and American Foreign Policy for a more elaborate discussion of this great "conspiracy" in U.S. history.)

The foundation for this work is Austrian economic theory. Through fractional reserve banking ' which is little more than legal counterfeiting ' banks are permitted to print new money, thus creating inflation. Yet the central insight of Austrian theory is that this creation of money doesn't simply increase prices, but distorts the cycle of production as it works its way through the economy. This creates the boom and bust cycles that have plagued our economy.

For a more detailed discussion of many of the issues raised in this book, the interested reader should consult Rothbard's The Mystery of Banking.

In this "Enzyme Nutrition", Eddie Howell and May Murray managed to squeeze a lot of information into a compact space. A good effort indeed!
The book is small; but, touched every vital point. Its outline good, and includes: the catalytic nature of food enzymes; their individual sources; stability; instability; as well as other biochemical and physiological characteristics.
This book will be of great benefit to nutritionist/dieticians, biochemists, pharmacologists, and many others. Its theme is simple and straightforward. Still, I will advise any non-science biased enthusiasts (like: bodybuilders and fitness [people]), who would like to venture into it, to keep a biochemistry dictionary at hand. "Enzyme Nutrition" will assist its readers in assessing and selecting healthy natural foods. It is an ideal and affordable advisor, which diabetics and other persons with limited food choice would enjoy reading.

I found this book very informative and enlightening but too technical at times which made the learning process a little less enjoyable for me.

This seminal work by Dr. Howell fills a much needed void in the nutrition paradigm. With abundant clinical research to back his findings, he explains the critical importance of consuming foods rich in natural enzymes and how these life-sustaining molecules are destroyed by our modern methods of cooking, sterilizing, and processing foods. Written on a level basic enough for people with little nutrition background, yet comprehensive enough to take a doctor like myself to a new level of understanding regarding the power of raw foods in both health and disease. He even takes one quote from the standard "bible" of anatomy for all U.S. medical schools, Gray's Anatomy, which points out that the human stomach is actually similar to the well known ruminant animals in having two seperate divisions for digestion. This book, which took over 20 years to compile and originally spanned over 700 pages, was written by a man who dedicated his life to patient care and research. This is an excellent primer for anyone interested in learning the value of unadulterated food in its natural state for health maintenance, as well as the ultimate natural weapon in conquering disease.
