Beyond the usual actress' focus on the entertainment world
From The Raven To The Dove is an autobiography by an actress who portrayed Raven Whitney on the soap opera Edge of Night provides plenty of involving insights that go beyond the usual actress' focus on the entertainment world to discuss her personal transformation and union with God. Angelic messages, family connections to God, and spiritual insights are the driving force of her coverage.

I Love This Book
This is a book i enjoyed so much I read it again and found it was as enjoyable the second time. I recommend it.

Page Turner
Half expecting just another celebrity-turned-writer voyage into mediocrity, imagine my surprise when I found I could not put this book down, literally, until I had read it through. Witty, funny and profound: Ms Gabet's 'joie de vivre' is intoxicating; her writing is superb. I highly recommend this one, not just for the good read, but for the life lessons Sharon unveils to her readers with the utmost candor and compassion.

Genesis, Creation and Early Man

The Patristic Understanding of Genesis
Fr. Seraphim Rose has done a tremendous job in his book "Genesis, Creation and Early Man" of explaining how the Fathers of the Church interpreted the book of Genesis. This work is tremendously important as it demonstrates how the Orthodox understanding of creation and early man is totally in contradiction with the theory of evolution. While not a thorough refutation of evolution, the book simply presents the authentic doctrine of creation to its readers so that they can go beyond the materialistic, 19th century, atheistic, man-made philosophy of evolution.

The Patristic doctrine of creation confronts neodarwinism
Here is a truly great book presenting the heart and soul of the Orthodox Christian doctrine of creation, the fruit of the research and study on the subject of creation and evolution done by Fr. Seraphim Rose during the last 15 years of his life. Disturbed by the easy if shallow acceptance of evolutionism by many modern Orthodox Christian authorities, Fr. Seraphim researched the subject of creation and evolution in depth in relation to Orthodox theology, and particularly in relation to patristic thought. Since the Orthodox Church considers the Church Fathers to be normative for its theology, Fr. Seraphim did a comparative study of all the available patristic commentaries on the Haexameron (the Six Days of Creation in Genesis): Origen, St.Basil the Great, St. Ambrose, St. John Chrysostom, St. Gregory of Nyssa, Blessed Augustine, and St. Ephrem the Syrian. This seems not to have been done before, at least not to so thorough an extent in modern times. What he found, by a thorough study of these sources, was that, contrary to the efforts of certain theologians to offer a "reading" of the Fathers that would support Darwinism, none of the Great Fathers of the Church can be claimed to support anything like current evolution theory. Even St. Gregory of Nyssa and Augustine, the two names most often mentioned in connection with doctrines that might support some form of evolution theory, are shown by Fr. Seraphim most convincingly to be thoroughly creationist in the Biblical and traditional sense. All of their more ambiguous remarks, when placed in context of their total thought, can in no way be claimed as some kind of ancient prefiguring of evolution. Any "reading" of any of the Fathers named above to support evolutionism is extremely far-fetched, and is the product of wishful thinking on the part of those Orthodox who want their church's theology to be more "up to date" and not at all in accord with the Patristic "phronema" (mind), which is supposed to be the hallmark of the Orthodox Church. The Patristic phronema cannot be said to be specifically anti-evolutionist in the strict sense of directly denying evolution as such, but only because transformism as a way of conceiving the origin of creatures was literally inconceivable, given their theistic and Trinitarian presuppositions and worldview. This remains a fact, claims Fr. Seraphim, whatever one might think about evolutionism as a theory of origins. The heart of the problem for Orthodox Christians, then, given this fact, is how to think about creation, origins, and the seemingly overwhelming unanimity (a false impression, in any case, as is proved by the recent surge of support for intelligent design in science) of scientific thought in support of the doctrine of evolution. Does this mean the Fathers are "creationists", in the currently understood meaning of that term, with its fundamentalist, or at least evangelical Protestant connotation? Not at all. They were creationists, certainly, but in a way that does not conform exactly to any contemporary notion, whether fundamentalist or evangelicalist or theistic-evolutionist. If neo-darwinist evolutionism can be said to be (prescinding from more recent non-gradual tweakings of the theory) horizontal, gradualist, randomly and blindly (unintelligently) caused, linear transformism, the Patristic doctrine of creation is vertically emergent, intelligently designed, hierarchically informed crystallization or condensation--ie, "And God said, let there be..., and it was so."

This superb study of the Patristic interpretation of Genesis is accompanied by Fr. Seraphim's acute analysis of the kind of philosophy that underlies evolutionism in all its forms. He finds it to be a set of modernist, relativist, pluralist, secularist, empiricist presuppositions that is essentially incompatible with the true Orthodox ethos.

There are a thousand books out there on creation and evolution, but among them, "Genesis, Creation and Early Man" is truly unique. Fr. Damascene Christensen, Fr. Seraphim's editor, contributes a thoughtful introduction and epilogue, and Philip Johnson contributes a forward that brings the creation-evolution debate up to the minute. There is simply nothing like this book elsewhere in the field. If you are interested in what the Fathers of the Church thought about the creation story of Genesis, and how they grappled with the science and philosophy of their time, and how their solution is relevant to us today, do not miss this wonderful and rewarding book.

Thorough and excellent coverage of the topic
This hefty tome does justice to its subject matter. Although newer material is available to critique the pseudo-science of evolution, that is not specifically the book's focus. Instead, Fr Seraphim looks at the theology regarding creation and the nature of mankind. He does this by examining the Holy Scriptures in great detail through the interpretive lens of the Holy Fathers of the Church. As a result, this work is a great starting point for anyone interested in patristic study of the subject, particularly with respect to the book of Genesis. He also spends time looking at the philosophy behind the evolution movement as well as the implications of evolution with respect to modern society. This is an important topic, as nihilistic philosophies engendered in the 19th century have been used to justify the genocide of 100+ million people in the 20th century! For those new to the evolution "debate", it may be wise to start in Part V (why should we care about evolutionism?) and then return to the beginning of the book. Also, I strongly recommend Johnson's book, Darwin on Trial, and similar works, which debunk the "science" behind evolutionists' claims.

Excellent and different
Very beautiful - I love poems that I can go back and read over and over again.

A pleasure to read
After enjoying Susannah Indigo's fiction and poetry on the internet, I was delighted to be able to own a collection of her poems in print. Her work is inspiring, touching, and a pleasure to read. Her exploration of sexuality touches the spirit as well as the senses, and her writing is fresh and original.

Enchanting
I was enchanted by this lovely little book from the opening dedication ("For the half-crazed lover who has watched energy transform into ice") through to the final words about remembering how to breathe. Indigo has an authentic voice that reaches deeply into passionate truths, sadness, and the erotic and loving soul. I've followed her writing for some time now, and I am always delighted and amazed by her words.

Volume 1 - don't miss
Includes songs like Break Down, Civil War, Don't Cry, Knocking on Heaven's door and more - just fun to play. A must have for all those who play the guitar or Guns n roses fans. Don't forget to buy volume 2. Doesn't have the songs from: 'The Spaghetti Incident?' though, maybe it's better this way because that album wasn't too good.

Great Tabs, I wish all tab books were like this!
I love how every single song is in this two book set (Complete I and Complete II). It's very thorough and it has every signal note from every Slash solo. But, it is a bit advanced (for me too) and a lot of it is pretty complex. Good thick tab book though.

simply the best!
If you want to learn Guns N' Roses songs exactly how they were recorded, get this book!

Realistic, and yet gentle
This is another in the American Girls series about Addy Walker, a ten-year-old African-American girl living in the America of 1865. In this story, Addy makes a new friend in the form of M'dear, a kindly old African-American woman whose blind eyes see more than most. Sadly, as Addy learns more about her new life of freedom, she learns more about the racial discrimination that pervades the world around her. It's up to Addy, with M'dear's insights, to see the way forward in such a dark world.

The final chapter is a look at what it growing up was like for African-American children in the America of 1864. Once again, I must praise American Girls for producing such a wonderful book. This story sets out race relations in a no-nonsense way, but without recrimination-it is a true lesson in healing. My eleven-year-old daughter loved this book, with its realistic history and gentle lessons, and I loved it too!

Wonderful addition to children's litterature
This book continues Addy Walker's adventures after successfully escaping her plantation for freedom up North.

Addy continues to be amazed by the opportunities that are so much more broader than those on the old plantation, but also realizes that even "free" states have racial segregation and discrimination. She is no longer the property of slaveowners, but still cannot travel certain places or excercise privlleges that whites in Philadephia are able to use.

With her friend Sarah's encouragement, Addy picks out a birthday. While such an action might seem mundane by today's standards, Addy (like others during slavery) never had a day that was uniquely hers. Taking her time with the big decision, Addy ultimately picks a day that has meaning for her and indeed, the entire nation.

A Lovely Story
Addy, an escaped slave, makes a friend, and worries about segregation. When is Addy's birthday? What can she do about prejudice between blacks and whites? How can she make this birthday a happy one? And can her new friend help her? Find out in this lovely tale.

A Passionate guide for would be rose growers.
The author's passion for roses shows on every page. The details on soil, nourishment, planting location, climate are highly valuable. Even creating new roses is covered. The photos and history of every selected plant show lots of devoted research. The listing of Rose nurseries and organizations saves lots of planning time. Love that book.

Hardy Roses earns its space on my bookshelf!
This book is as useful as a reference as it is lovely to look at. Growing roses at my home in USDA hardiness zone 3 limits choices to a few shrubs found at the local garden center, but 'Hardy Roses' provides well-organized lists of additional choices one can find in catalogs. Want a rose that smells divine? Use the charts that indicate the degree of fragrance. Require disease resistant varieties? The lists tell you which ones are easy to keep healthy. Equally valuable are the lists of catalog suppliers, because chances are, these varieties won't be available at the local outlets. Cultural information is here too, but seems slanted toward shrub rose growers rather than us die-hards determined to grow hybrid teas at any cost in impossible conditions. Along with Ortho's 'All About Roses', 'Hardy Roses' is the most-used of my 20 or so books on roses, and is a very good value. I recommend that after you receive it, keep a dust cover on the paperback version so you can carry it around shopping with you without damaging its pretty cover.

The best book on growing hardy roses in cold climates.
This book inspires cold-climate gardeners to grow roses. The writing is clear and easy to understand and the photos are beautiful. It covers information from where to plant your roses (including a discussion on microclimates) to growing to starting roses from seed and cuttings. It reviews over 100 hardy roses and is written by someone who knows and loves roses. Great for beginners and seasoned rose growers

Absolutely Amazing!
The recipes are easy to follow... The food is excellent and very tasty- you would never know it's actually good for you. Better than any Chinese take-out.

Great Chinese recipes!
This is a great cookbook for anyone that wants to make authentic Chinese food in their own home. Oh yeah...it's also supposed to be low fat...you wouldn't know it from tasting the food! (That's a good thing.)

These recipes are great. Very innovative and healthy.
This book is a compendium of both great chinese dishes that have been re-created to minimize fat content, and innovative new dishes. My doctor is happy with my cholesterol drop, and I love the taste and texture of these dishes. The glossary, units conversion, low fat cooking methods, and nutrition notes sections are really helpful. Everyone that cooks should have a copy of this book. I have not seen any other books that compare to it. My hat's off to the author.

Best Book on this Subject
This is the best book I have ever been able to find on this subject. What makes it unique is that the techniques described are based on MOTIVATION, not external appliances or yucky tasting applicants to the thumb or fingers. The author stresses how the child is made to feel a part of the process, and thereby gets a sense of self-accomplishment when the habit has been eliminated. This raises the child's self-esteem, which spills over into all aspect of the child's experiences.

I recommend this book for parents and professionals who are working with children who are attempting to kick the thumb-sucking habit. It works!

Excellent Self-Help Guide
I have been searching for so long for a book on this topic...one that not only outlines the problems of thumb and finger sucking, and the damage it can cause, but also a book that tells you what can be done about it.

This book gives comprehensive information to both parents and professionals alike on the causes, results and prevention of the digit sucking habit. The research done by the author attests to the success of the cited program.

I am convinced that this book will be of great value to parents (grandparents, too) and professionals who are dedicated to eliminating the thumb-sucking habit of children.

This is an excellent common sense self help book for parents
I received this book as a gift and have very impressed with Ms. VanNorman's advise on digit sucking is right on. What is often thought of as harmless can cause a great deal of dental and mouth problems that can be avoided. Expensive orthodontia is one consequence of prolonged thumb-sucking. I urge anyone interested in correcting the problem to read Rosemarie's book

Does not disappoint with either the laughs or the heart
High-Spirited Rose Is Rose is the latest collection of the "Rose is Rose" newspaper comic strip. An enjoyable romp with a loving mother who has a wild side that she imagines in biker leathers; an energetic young boy with his very own (highly protective) guardian angel; and the mild-mannered father who has his hands full just keeping up, High-Spirited Rose Is Rose offers the reader an emotional, joyful, exuberant, and celebration of everything from life's simple little pleasures to the daily struggle to balance independence, freedom, and personal responsibility. Very highly recommended reading, High-Spirited Rose Is Rose does not disappoint with either the laughs or the heart.

A James Bond Angel and lots of kitty cartoons!
I read this boook in a couple of hours. And I admit to read this again in a couple of days. The book as three major subjects, a guardian angel on disguise, a lot of litle fun cat stories and just fun cartoons. It is very unique on its way.

Another wonderful "Rose is Rose" book!
I've been a hug fan of "Rose is Rose" for several years now and this book continues the tradition. The book centers around the Gumbo family - Rose, Jimbo, Pasquale and Peekaboo. There are a couple other characters as well - Pasquale's Guardian Angel, Vickie the Biker (Rose's alter ego), and selfish cousin Clem.

The family's mild mannered adventures in everyday living are both sweet and endearing without being overly sentimental or sarcastic. They laugh, play, fight and makeup without ever forgetting they're a family and that's what is important. I think this volume has some of the funniest strips yet with Clem acting as the high priest of the snowball arts and Peekaboo's quest for sardines.
