cuts to the soul
Babara Helen Berger is the greatest sort of artist. Her pictures paint themselves into the reader's imagination. Her words are few, often spare, but they say so much with so little. Combined, they make tales that cut to the soul.

The beauty of "When the Sun Rose" is heart-rending. A friend who arrives in a golden carriage drawn by a Lion that shines like the sun; this Lion of Surpassing Beauty feeds on blueberries and cream; golden roses leaving something of the friend's presence at the end of day. "When the Sun Rose" is beautiful...a wonderful hymn to imagination and all that lies within as well as beyond us.

I recommend this book. Get a copy today.

touchingly beautiful
Love at first sight is the only way that I can describe what I felt when I first opened the pages of this book. My daughter was given it for her second birthday (there is no child too young to enjoy the illustrations) and for her it was love at first sight as well. She turns the pages and says, "beautiful book, beautiful book" over and over again. This is the only book in her extensive collection that she has quite this response to. The illustrations are radiant, magical, mystical, whimsical, richly colorful and have a golden aura of childhood that immediately sweeps me back to when I was a three years old exploring my grandmothers sun splashed garden. The story is a simple one about friendship with the illustrations portraying a world where the sun rose and was a 'rose', where the little girls friend is pulled in a carriage by a golden lion, where they spend a peaceful magical day together painting rainbows and sharing with one another. As the sun sets the magical day must end and the girls part, but there is a promise of togetherness again. The story is gentle and soft and is a wonderful book to read to your child before bed. Sweet dreams are sure to follow. I love this book so much that I did a search by author for all the books by Barbara Helen Berger...and I bought them all. No kidding. I have to say that this author is a gift from heaven for every child.

My favorite children's book
This is a beautiful book in all respects. Like other Barbara Helen Berger books, it is poignant, lovely and soothing. Ms. Berger is able to capture a wonderful calm that is rare and magical.

This book changed my life.
I had always been pretty scared about issues such as war, torture, and prison camp. After reading Darlene's story, I know that God will be with me no matter what circumstances are! A "must" read for anyone and everyone!

Incredible triumph in the face of trials
This heartwarming, inspiring, challenging, well written book quickly shot to the top of the list of our family's favorites! I read it aloud to my family every evening at dinner time (FAR better than watching television!) and we were so gripped by the story that we would often sit around the table long after we were done eating, all other duties forgotten, reading page after page because no one could bear to stop listening!

Darlene Deibler Rose was an amazing young woman with a great talent for writing and a deep love for the Lord. She experienced far more trials in her lifetime than the average American, yet she never became bitter through any of them. She was such a good witness in the way she lived that even the Japanese commander of the prison noticed it. Her relationship with the Lord was living, breathing, alive, and active, not a dead "I go to church on Sundays" relationship. She held on to her faith even when she lost everything else she had. God was her refuge and her security, and sustained her through many events that could have devastated her had it not been for him.

This book is very refreshing and uplifting! It doesn't drag you down into the bleakness of prison or the mire of discouragement, although those things are very real and present in the book. It strengthens and encourages you, letting you know that no matter what trial you are facing, God will work everything for good in the end. I was moved to tears of joy at the end of the book, and now regard it as one of the very best books I have ever read. It reminds you that God never changes. Even when all else fails we can turn to Him for strength and support. I think there are many people whose lives are not right with the Lord even though everything is going well and times are prosperous. Here is a life that was wholly dedicated to God, no matter what He asked of her. She was being refined, as gold in a fire, and she came through pure and bright.

Everyone we have loaned or given this book to has enjoyed it immensely, and I know you will, too.

A testimony to one woman's faith and walk with God
"I will never leave thee" was the title to the Focus on the Family radio program narrated by Darlene Diebler Rose. In it she tells about her incredible trials and experiences while a prisoner in a Japanese concentration camp. After listening to the program, and buying the CD, I wanted to know and learn more from this tremendous woman, so I bought the book.

Darlene was a young missionary bride when she arrived in Dutch New Guinea to win untouched tribes to Christ. She and her husband had around one year in the field, winning a few converts but ended up imprisoned in separate prison camps. Darlene endured tremendous hardships yet kept her wits about her and walked by faith, always asking God for guidance. Whenever she lost faith and cried to God, He answered her by giving her His peace and assuring her that He would never leave her nor forsake her. He also gave encouragement and answers to her prayers, such as the time she was starving and dying in the dungeon in solitary confinement and she prayed for just one single tiny banana, and God brought the Japanese camp commander to visit her and gift her 92 bananas! [The story of the camp commander Mr. Yamaji is interesting in its own right, and without giving it away, I'll just say Darlene's living right with God had a great effect on him]. While in solitary confinement, Darlene spent her time walking with the Saviour, talking with Him, and playing in her mind the scripture that she had memorized as a girl. She had psalms, hymns, and even entire chapters memorized, and the right line at the right time seemed to pop into her remembrance and give her the answer she needed at that time. God's Hand could be seen protecting her, as there were several circumstances where she could have lost her life had she not followed God's prompting.

What I learned from this book is that no matter what the circumstances, no matter how dismal the situation, those who know Jesus are never alone. I also learned that a Christian's testimony and the way they walk with God is observable by even the hardest and cruelest heart and can allow the Lord to change them.

This book was very hard to put down, and I definitely will want to be rereading it in the future for all of the inspiration and hope it gives. I only wish she had a sequel telling about the rest of her life in New Guinea [yes, she actually went back after the war].

The author is inspiring and the book is awesome
I have read all her books and have enjoyed all of them. Janette has a way of connecting with her readers and getting her readers involved in the story. Once you start reading, it is hard to put it down until you finish the book

A deeply touching book!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was SO touching to read how close the Peterson children were to each other, especially having lost their parents just months after the other. I was amazed how the book just kept me "glued!!!!!" I couldn't put it down;always wanting to see what happened next!!!! Janette Oke is simply my favorite author!!!! keep up the exellent work Janette!!!!!!!

Good Reading
I have never been so interested in a book before. I have never been very big on reading. Jannette Oke writes in such a way that I felt I was right there living or at least over seeing the events. Although I never wanted to put the book down, there were times when I had too. I had no problem with stopping & starting and knowing the previous events that I had read prior. Not something I can say of other books I have tried. I would recommend this to everyone!! I can't wait to explore the many other books she has written!!

The Famous Rose Callahan
Being an avid reader and a resident of Tombstone, I read anything I can get my hands on about the area. This is, without a doubt, the best "history" book of Tombstone I have read to date. I highly recommend it to anyone who is searching for their past!

A pleasant journey into the past¿
When I received this book to read I placed it on my stack of books that needed to get read for school. However, once I picked this book up, school was forgotten. This book so inspired me that I took my children on vacation to Tombstone and the Bird Cage. Whether or not you believe in past lives, this book will shake you up and make you wonder... Where were you when Tombstone was young...do you know? Do you really know? Pat Berrington is a wonderful writer and if anyone can make you forget the present...she can.

Completely believable and fascinating reading!
Tombstone, Earp brothers, soiled dove girls, shootings, cowboys, Indians, mining, gambling, the 1880's in the wild, wild west...what else can be more interesting to read? The Bird Cage Saloon was only opened for 8 years, but what stories those walls can tell. Well written, and spellbinding, this large book goes by very quickly and is easy reading, planning to reread it many times. Have visited the Bird Cage in person many times in the past and recently, I have updates since the book was written if interested after reading this book. Enjoy your step back in time to the 1880's!

M. Rose Barkley takes readers on a poetic journey
"Wayfaring Stranger-Poems is by far one of the most poetic journeys, I have taken in quite sometime. The poems offer advice on escaping negative thinking, taking control of situations, accepting self-worth, appreciating the past, and embracing love.....Use it as a tool to create that overdue poetic journey. Meet a Stranger and learn to navigate around, through and/or over rough spots!"

The work is impressive, the words are sustaining.
Wayfaring Stranger is an important and necessary volume of poetry. The work is a reflection of core truths. Hence, it is an exercise in truth for the reader. Through her journey, M. Rose Barkley invites us not only to connect with, but more importantly to dialogue with the "stranger" in ourselves...not a bad beginning or ending for progress.

An absolute MUST read!
Wayfaring Stranger captures the gamut of human emotion, from outrage to euphoria. This meritorious work is both insightful and profound and is very, very rewarding reading. M. Rose Barkley's book belongs in the library of anyone who's serious about their love for the written word. Buy it and read it!

Funniest Book I've read...
I read this book in spanish years ago when I was a bachelor... I laughed soooo much my family thought I was crazy... If I was going to recommend one book for out loud laughter this is the one. I've haven't found a book this much fun in years .... READ IT you will love it.

Should get 6 out of 5 stars
This book is absolutely hilarious! I'm a big fan of PJ's, so how did I miss this little gem until now? Anyway, this book had me literally LOL (Laughing Out Loud) as I read it in my own bachelor apartment. PJ has captured the essence of bachelordom, namely, we are all basically mischievous boys at heart who love chaos and disorder. PJ on cooking - "If you think of it as setting fire to things and making a mess, it's fun". His recipes alone will leave you in stitches. And he provides all sorts of ready excuses for putting off anything related to cleaning or keeping up one's residence. This especially rang true as I surveyed my own humble abode and thought "You know, I kinda LIKE having all that clutter on the floor, it makes the place looked lived in." This book is simply required reading for anyone who's experienced the joys of sharing an off campus apartment with two other complete slobs, where beer cans and empty pizza boxes are the primary forms of interior decoration. Let's just say it's a pleasant trip down memory lane for any healthy, red blooded American male, and should get 6 out of 5 stars if such a thing were possible!

Hands down one of his best!
I've been on a tear of P.J. O'Rourke's books lately, starting with Republican Party Reptile and so forth. This is by far one of P.J.'s best. I'm on the other side of the coin politically (fairly liberal) myself, but P.J. usually spares no one, and I admire that (Rush and his wacko friends could learn a thing or two).

This book is just about how to get by if you're a bachelor. It's incredibly funny for the most part (the cooking sections should not be read if you've just ate!). This is a fantastic little book, very helpful if you plan to live like a slob or like a typical college freshman.

In love with it but waiting...
I LOVED this book. I am not much of a reader at all but after my bio teacher told us we should read for pleasure, I picked this book up, aka the only non RL Stine book in my end table. I was absolutely sick of those books, i read them all when i was ten so i turned to Diane Schwemms book that i had bought a few years ago thinking the topic completely fit since i too will be turning 16 this year. I read it very quickly, devoured it in fact and i fell in love with the walker family. I couldn't wait to read Daisy. I immediately forced my mom to take me to my local book shop but, surprisingly to me, they didn't have it. I raced home and began to search and to my dismay Daisy is no longer in print. I truely hope to find it and i hope any of you reading this after reading them all will put your book up for sale. Please spread the joy of the walker sisters on as much as possible, if not for me then for someone like me.

This book is soo good
I read this book and I loved it so much. As soon as I finished it, I had to go out and buy the rest of the series. It's a terrific series. It's really nice how the author can make the characters express so many emotions, and it pulls you right into the plot. I recommend it very much.

The best book I've ever read...
Reading books is really not my thing but after I read this book, I was totally inspired and made me read the rest of the series and other books as well. Rose's experience was kinda frustrating(all of them did). Being the oldest sister requires a lot of responsibilities. Good thing she was able to recover. All of the four stories are great! I hope that filmmakers will make a movie out of these amazing stories.

The Future of Love: The Power of the Soul in Intimate Relationships

The Power of Love
This book has profound insight and brilliance on every page. Your eyes will be opened to the higher power of relationships that Kingma shows is very real, and very possible. It is an essential book for anyone who has been in a relationship. A definite must read!

Failure is Impossible in Love -- Because Love is Who You Are
Daphne Rose Kingma's book, THE FUTURE OF LOVE is a literary masterpiece. It shines like a star in the night, guiding us to a new and much improved view of ourselves and our relationship histories. With compassionate words and crystal-clear logic, Kingma explains why failure in love is actually impossible -- because love is who you are. Every relationship you have ever had has been part of your life for a very good reason, and when you step back and examine your life with compassionate eyes, you can see (perhaps for the first time) how perfectly orchestrated everything has actually been.

As Kingma writes, "We stretch, and to our amazement we don't break. Instead, we grow. Suddenly, everything becomes easier, and our hearts, which once we believed could love only one person, or were battered so badly we thought they could never love again, expand so fully that the whole world is welcome."

This spiritual book can provide amazing insights for you, regardless which of the seven stages of love you may currently find yourself in (Romance, Commitment, Crisis, Ordeal, Chaos, Surrender, Transformation). One thing is certain after you've read this book -- your view of the meaning of love will be permanently transformed.

What's really inside of Love
This book does read a bit like a textbook at times, and is slow in the early chapters. But the topics covered in the beginning are neccesary to fully understand the information presented later.

Ms. Kingma refers throughout the book to personality and soul as two related, but different aspects of who we are--not unlike the id and the ego. She also describes much of this material in spiritual terms that may lead some readers astray. But keeping the idea of personality and soul as components of who we are, this is likely not to be a problem to readers.

The content challenges our understanding of what love and relationships are 'suppose to be' and shows what's really happening--which is essential knowledge. Those who read and understand this book will find much less pain in their lives, and those of their loves.

If you don't even have time to read Cliffs Notes
This is one encyclopedia that is actually fun to read and browse. I fully join in the earlier reviewers' praise for this book. I do, however, have a couple of constructive criticisms. First, much too much space is devoted to non-literary historical and political figures and events. Hopefully, the next edition will cut down on this stuff, so that more "minor" writers can be included, especially contemporary writers and writers from the non-English speaking world. (In this respect, the Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature is probably a more comprehensive reference.) Second, too many entries about particular works are merely brief plot summaries that do not convey to the uneducated reader (such as this one) the essential meaning or significance of the work in question. That said, Benet's Reader's Encyclopedia is one great reference book to have around.

Easy reference to every literary topic imaginable.
Benet's Reader's Encyclopedia is the most complete one-volume encyclopedia based on literature. Its entries are numerous and cover a vast variety of topics, from 'portmanteau words' to 'The Inferno.' I highly recommend this book to everyone who has an interest in literature or who need some extra help in that subject to get by.

a booklover's book, fun to browse, xlnt reference
A handy reference work for scholars, literature students, readers and booksellers, the headings include authors, titles, literary terms, fictional protagonists, historical personages, and so forth. This is one to keep at arm's reach, right there next to the dictionary.

A quick & ready reference for unfamiliar terms encountered during literary jaunts and journeys, and a great aid for booksellers needing some accurate background information to list a literary find online! One wishes the numerous online booksellers just entering the fray would purchase a copy, and familiarize themselves just a little with the world of books and literature of which they have become purveyors! - I've seen listings that betray the seller's ignorance of the difference between Winston Churchill the British statesman (& prime minister), and Winston Churchill the American novelist! A quick check of this easy reference work would have made the difference between accuracy and diletantism!
