Gilbert de la frogponde
This book is wonderful for kids of all ages (and adults, too!). Gilbert is quite a quick-thinking frog! I loved how he squirmed his way out of being captured by the frog hunting chefs! What a creative story! The illustrations were very colorful and entertaining as well. We LOVED it!

This is THE best!
I have to say that even as a college student, that this is my favorite book! Where was this stuff when I was a kid? Gilbert is hilarious!

An absolute treat for my whole family
Gilbert de la Frogponde is absolutely hilarious for my 22 month old son, my wife, and myself.

The story is sweet and innocent, without being syrupy, the characterizations are perfect, and the illustration is the piece de resistance. I highly recommend it!!

A pioneering work.
The skill with which Ms. Brooker weaves together the stories of the AIDS patients she is following with the growth of her own awarenesses and her own personal story is remarkable, and what makes this such a compelling read.

An Absolute Must Read
I have never read a first chapter of a book that so moved me as this one did, about the author's friend who was the first person she knew who died of AIDS. After reading it I felt I knew this man, and I truly mourned his death, even though I never met him and he died over 15 years ago. That's how powerful a writer the author is. With every chapter, she uses the words of the person she is interviewing along with her own thoughts and feelings to tell their story. She writes with love and the artistry of a poet. This is a wonderful, moving, beautifully written book. I only wish this will be read beyond the gay/AIDS community. I only wish everyone in America would read this book, to see the suffering that ignorance and fear has created in far too many lives.

At first i thought "Oh no not another AIDS book"
Let's face it nobody wants to read another book on AIDS. And quite frankly neither did I. But this isn't a book about AIDS. It's a book about a straight woman in San Francisco surrounded by loving beautiful people who have been shunned, discarded and ignored. It's a story about a woman who confronts her own fears, prejudices and ignorance. A woman who is haunted by a promise she made to a dying friend 20 years ago. A promise that she keeps inspite of editors, publishers and agents who simply don't care.

Grandma Rose's Book of Sinfully Delicious Cakes, Cookies, Pi
One of America's best kept secrets! There are some knockout recipes in here. She's not an expert at explaining some of her recipes and doesn't go into tecnique much, but believe me, there are some incredible desserts in this wonderful book.

Birthday memory of a lifetime
When I was 12, my father asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and I said "Nothing...just a cake" and he went to Grandma Rose's book, and chose a mocha cake recipe that used a dozen eggs! The cake was giagantic and delicious. 28 years later I still remember how good it tasted!

Out of this world
My mother purchased this book years ago and I cherished it and looked for it for years and bought it the minute I found it. There is not a bad recipe in the book. All are wonderfully old-world and tasty. I have gotten many compliments on baked goods from Grandma Rose's book. I highly recommend this to anyone who has a great love of pastries and desserts. It is truly a treasure.

One of the best books I've ever read
This book was wonderful. My...sister brought it home for a book report. I was astonished that I finished it in under three hours. I couldn't put it down. I will also admit I cried in joy at the ending. As much as I appreciate the hardships and grief associated with the Holocaust, I liked hearing about someone who made it and found an amazing and courageous happiness even within her plight.

Fascinating and incredibly intriguing
This book really caught the attention of my heart and soul to the very bottom. I don't think I could have pssoibly put it down, the book really talked to me and I could feel everything that Ms. Rose Zar went through, each tingling feeling. She wrote this book so entirely incredible with each word filterig through your very mind. I cannot tell you enough how much this book has meant to me. I cried, I laughed, and thought hardly in every well-written chapter. Every human being on this earth, should have the pleasure of reading this book!

The story of an Indiana teacher's haunting Shoah childhood
The genocide of six million Jewish citizens from various European countries is an incomprehensible number and the collaboration or passivity of a majority of their neighbors and community leaders, who aided in their murder and other crimes against humanity, is a history too monstrous to imagine then or now. However the witness of survivors like Rose Zar and the testaments left behind like those of Anne Frank and others makes it clear to the rest of us, what really did happen and for us, to be constantly on call, so to speak, to respond to brutality, because the unthinkable is possible.

Rose Zar's autobiography came to me soon after its original publication in 1983, and by the way of one of her former religious school students from Sinai Temple in South Bend, Indiana, who was a roommate of mine at the time in the American Southwest. I had heard of Rose prior to the arrival of this important book because of the fond vignettes shared by my roommate and of his circle of childhood friends who had grown up together in South Bend and who all had been her students. They were a small group of American born children and like most Jewish kids from Indiana; they had all gone away to college and with their diplomas had wandered across the state line to more cosmopolitian places. Of that small group one is a famous Beverly Hills jeweler, whose important gems adorn our favorite stars on Oscar night. My roommate was absorbed in his medical residency, when "In the Mouth of the Wolf" arrived from Indiana, and so I read the biography and each evening gave my friend a debriefing of the chapters read thereto by his former teacher.

Having known Holocaust survivors most of my life, or since I was able to acknowledge their history, I hadn't been able to comprehend their horrors. Rose made that horror palatable when portraying the night she hid in the bushes while a search patrol probed the foliage. Recalling childhood games of hide-and-seek and the heart pounding sensation when about to be discovered hinted at the horror of Rose's ordeal when her mission to remain hidden wasn't a game, but meant her survival. There were many poignant illustrations that made this tome a landmark in my personal library's shoah collection. This is a biography that I had shared with my late maternal Grandmother's retirement neighbors in Sun City, Arizona, both concentration camp survivors, who I had known all my life, but whose individual biographies including the horrors they each had suffered, I shall never know. Having read Mrs. Zar's telling story, and hearing their praises of her eloquence and motion picture recommendations, I bravely asked when they might write their own stories. Perhaps their answer was all I needed to know. They hadn't fared, as luckily as had Rose, who had indeed remained hidden in the mouth of the wolf. Israel, who had lost a young son and a previous wife, answered my query: "You have to believe what you write, and I still can not believe what happened!"

This is not only the story of a young European woman who survived the Holocaust, but that of a lady who became an educator in Indiana, and who has become a voice in the annuals of Hoosier Jewry and the 200 years of Jewish life that has existed in our state since the old Northwest period. She is one of many survivors, who found refuge in America and lives about the towns and cities of Indiana and across the land, but unlike some has a mission to teach and to tell of the genocide that befell the once thriving Jewries of Europe not so many years ago. A story that the too often isolationist heartland should know, and a tome that should be added to the 'Indiana Room' collections of all our state's community libraries. I donated a copy to my town's public collection as well as to my congregational library.

well thought out
This book contains several rarely seen pictures of the band. Some are action shots, while others are stills.. All in all, this book captures the G'N'R' attitude very well!

An exellent book
As a huge fan of gnr, i was anxious to get some kind of book about them. I had all the records and even some rare bootlegs, but i could not find any literature about them. When i stumbled across this book at this site, it was an instant buy. i was very impressed at the quality and depth of Robert John's photographs. I have happened to see GN'R live and Robert John's photos certainly capture their flare and stage presence. A very good book. If you are looking for a biography go buy "The most Dangerous band in the world" or"The True story" If you want a good book of photos spanning GN'R wildest days, i suggest you buy this.

Brilliant! The pictures are beautiful.
This is the only GNR book I have. I have only started liking them 6 months ago and I'm surprised that book stores still have GNR material around. I'm positive that any fan would love this book. The book has GNR pictured from their early days in 1985 to almost the end in 1992. I love the fact that Robert John shows them from the beginning with their teased hair, and lipstick to a more mature look as they get older. The book has concert photos, backstage pics, GNR rehersing and even some more personel ones with Axl by himself. If you are looking for a biography of the band, then don't buy this one. On the bottom of the pictures Robert John tells you the place and year it was taken but otherwise it is strictly just a photo book, nothing else. I highly recomend it in any way.

Another gem in the Draycott Abey series
At the beginning I admit feeling somewhat disconnected from the story, somehow I just couldn't connect with the heroes. However, the more I read, the more the story made sense, and it proved very helpful since I had begun the Draycott Abey story from later books. Personally, I don't think this is the best book of the series, since there are better ones further ahead, but it is essential to the story line, and it is a great story. It has the same very good standards of any Christina Skye books after all! I'd highly recommended it.

The Hours Will FLY when you read this!
This was an incredibly good historical/contemporary romance. Normally, I do not like switching back and forth in a book from different time periods but this was done so seamlessly that I must applaud Ms. Skye for her effort.

Michael Burke, ex-Royal Marine, and undercover operative has come Draycott Abbey to unearth an urn hidden away and containing information that people are willing to commit murder for. Enter Kelly Hamilton, a beautiful archeologist who is gifted with an amazing ability for second sight but what is she really looking for, and what are these amazing flashes of times long past that keep threatening her sanity and make her feel as if she is part of it? Both Michael and Kelly are caught up in more than just this dangerous intrigue - they both feel the powerful attraction which they both try to deny and this tale of deceit and betrayal is a powerful and well written tale that has you holding your breath while trying to fit all the pieces together. I loved both the contemporary and the medieval stories told in this book. The characters are very well fleshed out and you can feel all their pain, sorrow and complete joy as they learn to love and trust one another.

Glimpses of the Draycott Abbey ghosts are delightful and thoroughly enjoyable. This was my fist novel by Christina Skye, but definitely not my last. I look forward to

RE:hour of the rose

A great Valentine's Day gift!
This is a great gift to give either a child, spouse, or significant other for Valentine's Day, or any day. The artwork is simple, reminiscent of Japanese watercolors, and the story is also simple yet sweet. This is a real winner.

GREAT!
My daughter loves this book. She wants me to read it to her every night. The illustrations are simple, yet beautiful. It would make a great gift for a new couple, newlyweds, or anyone celebrating an anniversary. I recommend it to everyone.

A charmer for adults and children alike
I thoroughly enjoyed this winning tale of love. The book's simple illustrations perfectly complement a text that is both charming and moving without being sugary or sentimental. I highly recommend it for adults and children alike.

How to become an expert ..
Well not quite, but almost there. This book, more than most, really lays out the mindset and strategies of expert bridge players. The chapter on the "5 lines of Defense" is itself worth the price of the book, and can be used by anyone, even beginners. If you are an intermediate player, just go buy this book! If you're just starting out in bridge, read a few beginner books and then come back to this. This is an amazing book!!

Unparalleled
The title of the Book made one wonder if there is really something common among experts. Being no expert myself, I was curious, too, to find that out. This book illustrates the fine points separating good players from experts in all aspects of the game. When I was reading the book, many deals started flowing through my mind and I realized that had I read this book earlier, I could have easily impromved my results. This book is highly recommended to all those players who want to take that final step to being called "expert".

How The Experts Win At Bridge
This book has helped my overall game more than any other bridge book. I particularly benefitted from the concepts of "getting your bid in early" and the "5 lines of defense." The methodology suggested by the authors for when to play safe and when to take risk for the overtrick in match point play was also of major benefit.

I have purchased copies for 2 of my partners so my master point total can increase that much faster. I would recommend the book for any serious player, whether his/her game is match points, team, or rubber bridge.

An interesting personal story
This book was an interesting compendium of the experiences of the author in looking for and finding old roses. He gives insight into the background of roses, where to find them and practical knowledge of the collecting. I do think it is a scientific work or an index, rather an interesting read about how he approached collecting old roses and what made them interesting to him. I enjoyed it!

Few gardening books like this one
For me, Gardening is about feeding my soul with beauty. If you are weary from reading the countless "how-to" gardening books that fill the shelves of the bookstore, then I would highly recommend this book.

Did you know that public parks evolved historically from cemeteries? Read this book to find out more.

And, no doubt, as other reviewers have noted, you will go out and find yourself one of these roses after reading their story.

Great book! :-)

~a life-long collector of garden writing says...~
There are few books in my gardening library so excellent I buy extra copies; miserly dealt out only to The Worthy. One of them is In Search Of Lost Roses.

In Search Of Lost Roses is a romp. A detective story. We are outlaws. We skulk through forgotten cemeteries. We drive old dirt roads. We meet eccentric old folks over garden gates, guardian angels of roses whose scent we will remember all our lives; things foreign to hybridizers in white lab coats.

I defy you to read this book and ~not~ acquire at least one of the old roses lauded within. My first choice was 'Aimee Vibert', a climbing noisette from 1828. England and France have an ancient horticultural feud. French nurseryman J.P. Vibert named his fragrant white masterpiece after his daughter. (As an aside: hunt plants with a woman's name. Only the best plants were named after wives, daughters, and mistresses.) Vibert said of his delicate climber "The English when they see her will go down on their knees." As I did and still do. For the three weeks she blooms on the arbor she is the goddess of the garden. She has a magnetizing effect on garden visitors and I tell them the story and say the punchline in my Inspector Clouseau accent. It is a testament to Mlle. Vibert that 200 years later she is still enchanting, passed down gardener to gardener. I never would have known her without In Search Of Lost Roses.

You will never forget this book. But buy it for the rose rustler's cutting recipe alone, if you will. They helped me to root cuttings from a fragrant and summer-long unknown in an ancient cemetery (I gave her the name of the lady she was planted over) after two years of trying other methods. And buy two. Perhaps someone you know is worthy. 5 Stars for Mr. Christopher.

Incredible Performance
Buy this book - you will not be disappointed. It is a work to look at again and again whether you are a railfan, traveler, or an artist. Some of Rose's paintings are romantic evocations of times and places that were found throughout the country not so long ago. Other pictures in the book have an edgier quality to them. In either case he captures the mood, light, and geographical setting of the never-ending drama of the American railroad. Rose was a painter who had a technical grasp of the nuts and bolts aspects of his subjects. He also had good artistic technique - I have found myself coming back to this book repeatedly and asking "how did he do that?" The quality of printing and binding is excellent and the introductory essay helps to place the paintings in the context of Ted Rose's life. I have bought several copies of this work as gifts for people and they have all been pleased with it.

Glorious artwork and great biographical information.
This is a wonderful book you can read straight through. The life of the author and his relationship to the railroads of the USA is fascinating and the text about the evolution of his art is appealing. The photography is exceptional. This book is a must buy for fanciers of railroads and art. Highly recommended.

In the Traces: Railroad Paintings of Ted Rose
A terrific selection of paintings by marvelous railroad artist. Many of Rose's paintings are not on public view, having been done for private commission. So far he markets no prints or lithographs, so either you buy an original or you buy this book. Typical fine job of printing and binding. High value book, likely to be worth lots more when out of print.
