I Cannot Believe this Book Is Out of Print
In almost a half century of reading, I can recall about a dozen books that were absolutely captivating, as much for the author's narrative skills as through the subject matter. This is one, and Pierre Berton is almost the only author whose works made that list more than once. The War of 1812 is a generally neglected subject in America, except perhaps for the New Orleans campaign of 1815. Berton writes from a distinctly Canadian viewpoint, although he writes so wonderfully that even the most chauvinistic American will hardly notice and won't care. Any time I begin to write something that I hope readers will enjoy beyond simple information, I try to look back over a little of Berton's work in vain hopes of picking up something of his incomparable style.

Fantastic! More Americans need to read this!
It is a pity that Americans do not understand nor have any knowledge of the War of 1812. Our relationship with Canada would better understood and accepted if it did. Pierre Berton, a Canadian, has told the story of the war from a Canadian perspective but in such a manner that we can all relate and sympathize. He has taken reality/history and written it like historical fiction while maintaining a scholarly credability.

Interesting and well-written
History written like fiction. Can';t say enough about how readable and entertaining this book is. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the War of 1812

THE book in geostatisctics
This book is the one book one should consult in order to study and apply geostatistics. It is very comprehensive, clear and practical. It presents classical and innovative methods in geostatistics, some of them only now appearing in textbooks.

Great for no statisticians
The book is at first out of reach because of the common notation. After three pages it became self explaining and incredibly usefull. I strongly recommend it to subjets new in geostatistics with a no very strong mathematical background.

One of very few well-written math related books
I picked up this book so that I could understand a geostatisical model I was using for petroleum exploration, and it did a beautiful job of laying out the conceptual framework of the math. As a geologist with not so much mathematical background, I was able to pick through the equations and derivations (which I imagine would be useful for those so inclined) to get at the actual substance. This is a surprisingly readable text for a math book, highly recommended.

Outstanding book detailing WW2 German Military Uniforms
If you are remotely interested in WW2 German Military Uniforms you will find this book very interesting and worthwhile. If your interest is more serious then this book is a must have. The authors have put together an outstanding collection of modern day photographs of fully dressed German Soldiers. World War Two is broken down into different sections: '1939-40 The Blitzkrieg Years','1941-From Crete to Moscow', '1942-The Last Victories', '1943-The Turning Point', '1944-Setbacks on all Fronts', '1945-The Last Stronghold'. The actual quality of the photographs is excellent. The way the subjects modelling the uniforms are presented is excellent. The attention to detail is excellent. As a reference for uniforms and equipment of this period, this book is superb. I have only read the book as a passing interest and have been captivated by the detailed photographs. They may have been a fascist regime and guilty of starting a war, but it must be said, the German Soldier certainly had the smartest uniforms of all combatants. I have no doubt, modellers and military enthusiasts will treasure this book. Highly recommended.

PREMIER BOOK OF GERMAN WWII UNIFORMS
If you are an enthusiast about World War two from the German perspective, this book is a must! The authors have compiled the largest collect to date of modern day pictures of original German uniforms and the related equipment. The pictures are not only great but the written compilation that goes with it is excellant. You will not be disappointed even though the cost is very steep.

Great !
This books is a must for WWII buffs. The pictures are of men dressed in the correct German uniforms and equiptment used by each of the divisions and are in full color. A detailed description on each uniform is included. Just GREAT !

Magnificent !!!
Me as a great lover of Ancient Greek culture & history, I really liked reading this book. When I took it from the shelf in a bookstore in Amsterdam I was with my classmate, when he saw what I had in my hands, the first thing he said was "I guess you just founded your dreambook" And my dreambook it surely was.

On first hand I though that the book would be about the Greek philosophy, but that was a very misplaces thought. In fact the book is so much more wider of scale. It will take everything into the research and tries to explain the Greek thinking not only from of a philopsopcal side (although there is a bog part on that to) but more from of the general idea thoughts. It will tell you what Greek thought about a huge scale of things and topics.

So when you want to get into the mind of an Ancient Greek, and who doesn't !!! (remember that was The reason for Socrates to die, since he was looing forward to meet Hesiod & Homer) Then surely this is your book.

So be a good person and take Machiavelli's advise that a firm knowlegde of our (and then I speak of us Europeans) own Classical inheritage is absolutely crucial in life for true and read this book.

very good
this book is invaluable.
I suggest it to people with no BS in classical studies but with the will to educate themselves.

Greek thought is the cornerstone of the western culture. It is so to speak the 'point of genesis'. Every educated person needs today (irespective of his profession) to have a ground in psychology and sociology in order for him to be an adequate
citizen. Studying this book helps very much in this respect. What the Greeks thought about psyche and society are indespensable today. In fact in clear oposition to the alternative religious
views of these things (jewish, Christian, Mouslim) the Greek
way offers rational answers to the central questions what is psyche and what is society.

This book is a very good *introduction* to greek thought:
treats every contribution to science (all in special
chapters), schools of thought (very thoroughly) and the last part (perhaps the best) is a kind of dictionary which comments
extensively (10-30 pgs) on individual personalities; the chapter
on cynicism is very nice and practically every thought current is covered. I regret that there is no chapter on Demosthenes
(too strange for such a big book).

In opposition to other books this one covers **all** greek thought from -800 to +500 (already inside Byzantine Greek thought); however it covers **only** non-christian Greek thought.

The binding is *excellent*. One complaint though about the paper quality; but this sound as details to a fantastic picture;

buy it and learn; study it and be educated; think about its content and you will become better men!

Excellent coverage of Classical Greek Thought
Jacques Brunschwig's book is heavy reading. This is not to say that the writing is difficult to read but that the book contains so much information that it is physically heavy. At around 1024 pages, this book is an encyclopedia of essays about almost all aspects of Greek philosophy and history. This book was translated from French and it is great that the essays are now available to the english speaking reader. The book is divied into sections such as The Pursuit of Knowledge, Major Figures, and Currents of Thought. This is useful because since it would be nearly impossible to read the book from cover to cover, it allows the reader to find sections that interest them. I read one essay every night. In a little over a month I had a better understanding of Greek philosophy than ever before. The Currents of Thought section is very interesting because it discusses the various philosophies that appeared throughout Greek history. The book not only contains great essays, but beautiful color photographs and pictures as well. This book is a good introduction to Greek philosophy or a reference on the subject. It is an excellent value for the amount of information it contains.

Spanish illumination...
The quality of the reproductions in this book alone is worth the price tag. The fact that this book is in English (much of the material on this subject is not) makes it a valuable resource as well. Mireille Mentre is one of the leading students of Spanish medieval manuscripts, and this book surveys the most important pre-Romanesque (mozarabic) examples. This is a somewhat conventional art-historical analysis, as Mentre traces the development of the mozarabic style through numerous examples. The chapters are as follows:
1. Context and characteristics of mozarabic painting
2. Foundations and development of a distinctive style
3. The role and function of painting and illumination
4. Design and pictorial treatment
5. Painting and spirituality

There are also appendices listing principal mozarabic manuscripts and dated manuscripts, as well as an extensive bibliography about the subject.

thorough without overdoing it
This is the book to start your adventures in Medieval Spanish illumination. This looks at the influences of Christian, Jewish, and Islamic art - the fact that the majority of the plates are in color can only add to the value of the very reasonable price.

Highly recommended for anyone engaged in reproduction of this style of art. Beautiful rendition of the colors of the original MSS.

extremely thorough
The fantastic pictures of the manuscripts alone are worth the pricetag on this book. But don't buy it for that reason alone. Mireille Mentre has managed to strike an impressive balance between descriptive text, academic discussion, and outstanding photography. While the organization of the book as a whole suffers slightly from what appears to be the publication of parts of an excellent doctoral dissertation, anyone interested in the history of medieval Spanish illumination (especially members of organizations like the Society for Creative Anachronism) would do well to add this text to their library.

I Agree Wholeheartedly
The two reviews below are absolutely correct. Pierre Berton has written a great masterpiece of narrative history. I first read this book almost 20 years ago, and I can still recall the enjoyment it gave. This is perhaps the best book of history in terms of enjoyable reading which I have come across. The only author in the same league today is Simon Schama, and he generally works in somewhat more esoteric, less popular areas. I have also discussed the excellence of Berton's writing in a review of the companion volume Flames Across the Border: 1813-14 which, along with this text, makes up as fine a two volume set of North American history as can be obtained.

History comes to life
Best book on history I ever read. Most books on the war of 1812 focus on the 'high level' intrigue--congressional debates, executive office plotting, etc. This book focuses on the front lines. Learn about how Madison decision to appoint imcompetent generals (He didn't want the war, and it was his way of keeping it from happening) led to human suffering. Get a good sense of life on the frontier and the fear Americans had of the local Indians. Read this book.

Excellent - makes history come alive
The invasion of Canada is one of the most engrossing books on history I have ever read. Ms Berton brings to life the characters, events and atmosphere of a continet on the brink of war. This is achieved by Ms Bertons skillfull blend of historical research and artistic licence, which give even the most uninspred reader of history something to get thier "teeth into". I found it avid reading and look forward to sampling more of Ms Bertons work.

Fine, simple book
Using simple language book covers Renoir's life & painting career with surprising alacrity & detail. Good prints. Shipped as promised & in excellent shape.

An excellent introduction to the life and art of Renoir
Mike Venezia's book about Pierre Auguste Renoir for the Getting to Know the World's Greatest Artists series is as much about the Impressionist movement as it is about Renoir. We see Impressionist paintings by Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, and Camille Pissarro before we see Renoir's most famous painting, "La Moulin de La Galette." There are also notable paintings from the period by artists other than the Impressionists, which give young readers a better sense of what the Impressionists were rebelling against. This is especially important since Renoir was content to do some paintings in the "old" style, such as "Lise with Sunshade," in order to have works shown at the Salon But the most interesting comparison is between the paintings of the same scene at "La Grenouillere" by Renoir and Monet, which gives you a sense of their distinctive styles as artists, even if you cannot articulate the differences in artistic terms. As always in this series, Venezia tells the story of Renoir's life, using not only the art of the times but his own cartoons to illustrate the important and fun moments. The one portrait of Renoir in the book is done by Frederic Brazille (although I think he did a self-portrait of the back of his head in one of the paintings). What I will remember most is how Renoir abandoned the Impressionist style just as the movement found acceptance and how he told a friend, just before he died, "I think I'm beginning to understand something about painting." Renoir has never been one of my favorite Impressionist artists, but I enjoyed learning about how he spent his entire life experimenting as an artist and trying different things. That lesson is probably the most important one budding young artists can pick up from this entertaining and educating book. Of course, I heartily recommend this entire series of introductions to the world's greatest artists by Venezia.

The young have a good time with Renoir's joy of life scenes
"Occasionally, Renoir would paint landscapes and still lifes, but his favorite subjects were always people.", p. 29

The young reader will learn about Renoir's birth in Limoges, France; his family's move to Paris when he was young; his early drawings using his tailor father's chalk; his working years in a workshop painting decorations on china; his learning the formal method of painting in the studio of Charles Gleyre; and his participation in the creation of the "Impressionism".

Renoir was a rarity in that he was successful at painting in many styles. He was very versatile. Most painters lock themselves into a painting method and stick with it for awhile. All their paintings during that period of time use the same method. Renoir locked into what he painting and let it determine the method. If he were painting outdoors, he would choose impressionism with an emphasis on people having a good time more so than the outdoor setting. If he were doing a portrait, he would typically choose the older style but with less formality. His chose of method would be similar to a photographer choosing to use black and white film for certain shots and color film for others. Children are very sensitive to their surroundings. Their response can at time be instantaneous. They go with the moment and therefore will appreciate Renoir's similar approach.

My favorite painting in the book is Renoir's "Umbrellas". He let the figures chose the method. He chose impressionism for the more formally attired, and he utilized a more formal method for the less formally dressed woman on errands with her basket.

Venezia's illustrations are humorous. His narrative is delightfully entertaining. His approach brings the artist within reach of the young. His embellishment of the variety of surfaces on which the young Renoir chose to draw with chalk is creatively done.

The size of the book is perfect for smaller hands. It enables the young to have art within their grasp. Venezia gives the locations of the paintings and as result if the child lives near one of the museums or will be near one on vacation, she/he would be able to see the original.

This is the 20th in Venezia's "Getting to know the World's Greatest Artist" series. His series is a wonderful way for the young to be first introduced to the brilliance of artists. He also has a similar series on composers. Venezia's back cover illustration ties back to the subject. "While studying Renoir and the Impressionist movement of the 19th century, Mike was inspired to ...".

The price of the book is well worth paying. Venezia includes pieces by the artist, pieces by the artist's colleagues and art styles referenced. The book contains the following: Renoir's paintings (16); Venezia's illustrations (6); Others' paintings (8) and paintings on a vase (1).

A "must-have" for cichlid lovers!
In the words of Dr. Herbert AxelRod -- "no one in the whole world knows, niether fish collector nor scientist, knows more about the fishes of Lake Tanganyika than Pierre Brichard"-- and I agree. This book is a collection of his knowledge combined with beautiful photography of fish and the region.

The book begins with the geography, history, climate, and water properties of the lake. The photography is just magnificient.

Then come the fish. Each species with a tremendous description of their behavior, breeding, coloration. This information is invaluable for the fish collector buying fish at his/her local fish store.

Anyone who knows tropical fish knows the African Cichlids, and the cichlids of Lake Tanganyika are the most interesting of the interesting, Their isolation, speciation, adaption, and mouth brooding is absolutely fascinating.

The picture on the back is of the author -- Pierre Brichard -- in shorts preparing a cichlid in a narrow tank for a photograph. Around him are funnels, tanks, siphons, nets. This is my favorite photograph in the book....how I wish I was there!

Pierre Brichard' s Book of Cichlids And All Other Fishes of Lake Tanganyika is a "must-have" book for all cichlid afficianados.

A good resource for the cichlid lover.
This is one of my favorite books. Although I think it is over priced, Brichard does a wonderful job of presenting the fish of Lake Tanganyika.

This book provides wonderful photos of virtually all of the fish and color morphs. The information provided on each fish is excellent as well.

This is a must have for the serious cichlidiot.

Terrific, all-encompassing book about African Cichlids!
This book is chock-full of color pictures and documentation on the various cichlids from Africa's enormous Lake Tanganyika. I was totally impressed with the expertise Pierre Brichard conveys about these incredibly intelligent and colorful fish.

Pierre-Joseph Redoute was the Audubon of flowers--particularly roses and lilies. His artwork is stunning and he depicts the various varieties of roses in immaculate detail. An absolutely gorgeous book, published by Taschen and printed in Italy, my version is about 5"X 8" page size and the ISBN number is 3-8228-1356-7 (English version).
