The Aim and Structure of Physical Theory
Published in Paperback by Princeton Univ Pr (1991)
Author: Pierre M. Duhem
Amazon base price: $5.95
Average review score:

Compulsory reading for philosophers of science
"The Aim and Structure" is a very influential book in the history of philosophy of science. Duhem rejects the methodology of crucial experiment and inductivism. He emphasizes that scientific experiments are not observations of raw empirical data, but they are highly dependent on theory (theory-ladenness of observation). But the most famous thesis of this book is epistemological holism; according to W.V.O. Quine it is a "milestone of empiricism". I consider "The Aim and Structure" an excellent introduction to some philosophical problems of science, a compulsory reading for a philosopher of science.

Excellent, well written and documented, and informative.
This book was written by the folks at Black Hills Institute of Geologic Research. Neal is the leading authority of invertibrates of this period. The book lists species and where specimens have been found. I have found it to be an excellent desk reference as well as a great field guide. Recommended reading for the Ammonite hunter.

excellent review of a jeopardized social class
The author describes the decline and fall of a jeopardized social class: nobility in decadent modern France. Her account of the dispaired struggle for recognition of these eccentric and unfairly criticized creative individuals is positively thrilling. She obviously knows what's she's talking about.

Saying It With Flowers: The Story of the Flower Shop
Published in Hardcover by Trafalgar Square (2000)
Author: Jennifer Davies
Amazon base price: $29.95
Used price: $11.98
Average review score:

Excellent beginner book
This sturdy and attractive board book bills itself as "a first reference book for toddlers and preschoolers." Although most people don't think of board books as a format for reference, this is exactly what Scholastic has done here. The book is divided into flaps that depict images of animals. A child can easily choose a picture and turn directly to that particular entry. Each section lists a verb, such as "crawl", "run", "swim", etc., and gives examples of three animals that the verb is applied to. The lifelike illustrations match the text beautifully. Recommended for ages 2-6.

A "delectable novel" indeed!
The back cover describes Arch of Desire as a "delectable novel." Delectable is the best way to describe this novel! The Arch of Desire is a fictional account of the life of French artist Pierre Molinier and his uninhibited and taboo erotic exploits. What begins as an eleven-year-old boy who's curious about his mother's lingerie develops into a lifetime of forbidden desires such as incest, fetishes and uncontrollable urges.

Pierre's paintings have always intrigued me -- and Puelles has crafted a wonderful piece of erotica that is both historical and literary. This wonderful novel is one of the reasons why I love reading this obscure genre. Puelle's words enthralled me. His is a voice that drips with sensual prose. I cannot wait to read more from this gifted Spaniard author.

"What is the function of Primitive war?"
The answer, to create dispersal, the prevention of power accumulation and the unified hierachical state. This is one of the central thesis' in Clastre's "Archaeology of Violence". In it he argues that along with the defining of territorial limits( which provide incentives for a stabilized population ), the primitive war behaves in the opposite manner of the classical war, seeking dispersal and reductions of power, rather than the accumulations of it. By preventing tribes from becoming unified, the emerence of the state is avoided. Also examined is concept of chiefs with no power. Chiefs may be elected as a temporary spokesperson for the tribe but posess no governing power over their people, rather they are elected just to represent the collective will of the people. Any Chief or war lord who abuses their position would be mocked, disdained and not followed. This is an excellent study by the french anthropologist who lived among and studied the lives of the Yanomami people of the Amazon, in depth analyzing their state and power(or lack of)
