Jungle Stories: The Fight for the Amazon
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (1996)
Authors: Sting and Jeanne-Pierre Dutilleux
Amazon base price: $22.95
Average review score:

Highly Recommended
Jungle Stories is a a book co-written by Sting and photographer Jean Pierre Dutilleux about their visits to the Amazon rainforest, firstly in 1987 (when he was accompanied by Trudie Styler), and later in 1989 (when trying to get President Sarney to agree to the demarcation of the Xingu National Park). Dutilleux was responsible for introducing Sting to the problems being faced by the Amazonian indians and for introducing him to Chief Raoni. The book features many superb colour photographs of the rainforest and the damage being done by logging and mining companies, but especially of the mysterious and proud Indian tribes. Sting introduces us to several larger than life characters in his contributions. His writing is good - written in short, snappy, journal fashion, serious without being overly so, and punctuated with flashes of humour. His admiration for the Indians shines through the book, and Dutilleux's excellent photographs - many of Sting - set this book off marvellously. Highly recommended.

Compelling and Well-Argued
Keller's work sets a new standard for Kantian scholarship. This book is so thorough that it demands an intensive reading and much thoughtful reflection to fully grasp Keller's insights. If you want to understand Kant's transcendental philosophy in a way that Kant would probably appreciate, buy this book. If you want to understand the significance and rigor of transcendental idealism in Fichte, Schelling, or Hegel, this book will give you a clear foundation to build those studies upon. Compared to Guyer and Allison, Keller has established a new standard that will eventually have to be addressed by the old guard.

Unbelieveable photos! A must buy for history lovers.
Berton, a well known writer of Canadian histories, has put together quite a collection of photographs in this glossy tome. If you are realy interested in the subject, I suggest Klondike Quest for the remarkable pictures, and "The Klondike Fever", also by Berton, for a written account. I can't praise the collection of photographs enough.

Excellent overview of Klondike Gold Rush
Excellent first book for anyone interested in the Klondike gold rush. Provides accurate overview of the events that made this such an important event in history.

For the reader already generally familiar with the Klondike gold rush, a good second book is the one written Tappan Adney; that book provides excellent details about everything imagineable.

Knightmare Chess is a dream:
Bent Larsen, the Danish Chess Grandmaster was quoted as saying that "Chess is a beautiful mistress". Well, my mistress has shown me her dark side!

Nightmare Chess consists of a set of 80 heavy-weight playing cards. Each of these cards, when played, modify the standard game of chess in unique and entertaining (or bizarre) ways. Some effects apply only to one piece, others to many or all pieces. Cards can even interact with each other. Its like playing "Magic: the Gathering" over a chess board.

The cards themselves are high-quality. Each has a painted image related in some way to the effect of the card. Most of the imagery is dark, some even slightly disturbing. (nothing offensive, or even too worrisome for parents) The rules are straightfoward and brief. Most questions about card interactions are resolved by the basic rules, the remainder should be resolvable with a quick discussion with your opponent.

Gameplay is a chaotic blast! I love chess, but the addition of the Nightmare cards infused the game with a wonderful unpredictability.

For fans of chess or games like "Magic", you need this game! I would encourage anyone that enjoys games to give this a try.

A Beautifully Produced Facsimile Edition
This is a beautifully produced facsimile of this founding work in Ornothology. "One of the first explorer-naturalists, Belon can be considered the originator of comparative antomy, drawing parallels between human and bird skeletons. He was also the first to bring order into the world of feathered animals, distinguishing between raptorial birds, field birds, diurnal birds, river birds, etc." (Richard S. Westfall)

A woman far ahead of her time
An amazing account of a time and woman like no other. The Countess di Castiglione can be looked upon as a precursor to many artists that have explored self-portraiture, though her "art" captured her narcissism more than any underlying concept or expression. In beautiful costumes from her personal collection, the Countess was photographed and then had artists paint over the portrait to create scenes from history, current operas, or novels of the time. This book compliments the wonderful exhibit recently displayed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. I had the pleasure of seeing the exhibit and I was floored by the effortless artistry by which the Countess expressed her deep-seated self love (and loathing). I highly recommend finding out more about this beautiful woman, so scandalous in her time, so historically important in ours.

La\Vie/ la Mort et la Resurrection de SocrateMarie Gripotard

The French Vonnegut
This remarkable novel concerns a set of identical twins, one of whom is the first of the race of Supermen (in a Nietzschean, but also Messianic sense), and the other a Communist, and both of whom are the sons of a certain Jew named Adolf Hitler.

With his wry humor, Gripari manages to sardonically revise most of the major religious, historical, and political events of the 20th century, among other things calling the Old Testament the work of Nazi propagandists (not farfetched, if you think about it), and suggesting that World War II was actually a war between a capitalist trust of Jews and a capitalist trust of non-Jews (for whom Hitler was merely an indifferent puppet).

It's a shame that this hasn't been translated into English (as far as I know), for it stands as one of the most hilarious, fascinating, and innovative French novels of the post-war period. Highly recommended to anyone who can read it.

A Tremendous First Step for Grasping German!
The Langenscheidt Picture Dictionary is a terrific way to get started in learning German. Just as a child typically learns to speak by first learning the names of things around him or her, this dictionary allows one to learn the German words for hundreds of common items, plus several action verbs. With attractive picures accompanying each word, the dictionary provides a fun see-and-name means of learning.

A friend and I have used this book for hours at at time to quiz each other's elementary German skills and it has been a real benefit to progressing to more advanced levels in the language.

At the very least, this book would be a fun and easy tool for anyone to use as a tourist, helping them communicate the basics on a trip to Deutscheland!

A college Fine Arts Major's dream come true!!
This book covers the structural anatomy with pin-point accuracy. Though this isn't really an anatomy book by title, by examining Prud'hon's structural techniques, one can easily see all of college's artistic anatomy classes in one of his graphics.
