I have adored this book since I was a child. It was given to my mother, by the author, when she was three. It's a cousin of her's on her mom's side of the family. I would highly recommend this book for anyone looking to read fun, imaginative and adventurous books with their children. I'm looking for another copy so that I can share it with my children too. (My mom still has her copy!)

I loved this book as a child! It is the story of a girl and her sloth, which she somehow acquires (I don't exactly remember how) and keeps a secret until she can't keep him a secret anymore. It details the devotion of children to their pets and provides a rollicking, amusing account of dealing with an animal. "Samson" is eventually given to the zoo where Julie can visit him.

As the previous customer review notes, "Lark Rise to Candleford" fully details life in, alternately, an English hamlet (Lark Rise), a village and a town (Candleford) at the turn of the 20th C. And, as with the prior review, the book is invariably described as a fond recollection of a bygone, uncomplicated era. I value it, though, for the opposite reason, that by describing agricultural life of the last century so accurately and dispassionately, it unintentionally shows such life to be overwhelmingly impoverished, bare and humdrum. In several passages, the author Flora Thompson scolds herself for making the hamlet and village sound so unremittingly dull. Ironically, her protests only underscore the reality of daily existence. One of her most telling observations is about the rarity of drunkenness in Lark Rise, not, as one might infer, because of a higher moral standard, but because no one could afford more than a glass of beer at a sitting. At another point, she describes without editorial the death of noblesse oblige and the resulting hand-to-mouth poverty, unbroken by one-time manor-sponsored holidays and fetes, that accompanied the transition from tenant to wage farming in the latter half of the 19th century. The ultimate strength of this book for me, therefore, is its reminder that, for so many Western people, these really are the good, old days.

This trilogy was one I read many years ago and only returned to recently. On this reading it was an even better - recalling in detail a life which has totally gone now but has a wonder and joy in it which we can no longer experience. On having her fortune told - the main character was told she would be loved by people she had never met - for once astrology worked. An excellent piece of literature.

I had been putting together a collection of books for young readers on Holocaust themes for a school library when I found this book. It is so heartbreakingly brave, beautiful, and uplifting! The illustrations have a charming dignity. The fact of the camp existance is brought out gently, yet compellingly. Most of all, the book is a testimony of the triumph of the human heart. I highly recommend it to persons introducing the facts of that historical period to very young readers.

I have used this book to teach my second and third grade students about the Holocaust. The story and the pictures bring to life the horror of the Holocaust and temper it with the hope for the future. The book has become one of my favorites. I strongly encourage anyone who teaches about the Holocaust to include this book in their collection.

"Let's Go Visiting" is the delightful to sequel to "I Went Walking". Even though they are both simple stories, the story in "Let's Go Visiting" differs from "I Went Walking". Having both books won't leave children or their parents bored with the same story from these repetitive sentence books. "Let's go visiting. What do you say?" brings in baby farm animals, ready to play! This book utilizes counting to six and teaches the names for the baby farm animals (kittens, piglets, calves). The wonderful illustrations are active and create their own story, complimenting the simplicity of the text. Although this book is recommended as a read aloud for babies through toddlers, I would also include it as an independent reader for kindergarten and first grades.

My daughter cut her front teeth on her board book edition of 'I Went Walking.' It was the book that had to go everywhere with us, the book that I had to buy twice. So it was a natural when 'Lets Go Visiting' came out that we had to get a copy. The good thing with the hardcover edition is that it's very large and my daughter, now two, has a great time counting all the brightly colored animals. She can't get enough of the rhyming story and all the different animals'this time, they are baby animals. Her favorites are the little black kittens. The bad thing about the hardcover version is that it doesn't stand up as well to all her 'love' as the board book pages in "I Went Walking" do. The pages are taped and she can't teeth on it (though not for lack of trying.) So maybe soon they'll come out with the board book edition'until then, we'll keep buying another book when she's loved the older one to bits'and keep on attempting to show her how to take care of her books.

This is some of the best stationary that I have ever seen before. With different styles to mix and match, it's perfect to take up that 'old' way of communicating with people by snail mail again.

While Martha may think that she is the doyenne of all things beautiful and tasteful, she's dead wrong. Julie Addision has been making gorgeous paper sculptures and printed paper for many years, before Martha even hit the aesthetic radar! And because snail mail is really becoming a lost art, one can revive this lovely custom by using stationary that celebrates the written word. For those who can't get enough of this look, Julie's also got another product by Chronicle Books, simply called "Box of Labels". It's chock-a-block with tasteful, elegant labels for mail or gift giving.

Life and Death on the Internet is the most informative book I've read on Internet safety. This book starts out explaining a few simple facts about the Internet and then gets serious with solutions to privacy issues every Internet uses faces, especially parents. Many helpful ideas were presented in an easy to follow format. The only concern I had with this book is that the author put an Appendix in the book listing all the free and anonymous pornographic newsgroups, including child pornography, bestiality, bondage, torture, cheerleaders (which many times include kids), and homosexuality. I understand why he needed to do that. I just feel that some may buy the book to view pornography and that is not the purpose of the book.

Overall I rate this book 5 stars. This book does not just outline the problems, but provides solutions to protect your family from Internet indecencies and protect your privacy.

After reading Life and Death on the Internet I put some of the recommendations outlined in the book. I figured it would be mildly interesting until I found out my fourteen year old son was in contact with another woman online. Pornographic pictures were sent to my son. I turned this over to the police. It turns out that the woman was really a man with a criminal histroy of molesting buys. My family has been saved. The guy who did this still has to stand trial but he is behind bars. I just pray he is convicted.

If you have children buy and read this book. I never believed that this could happen to me. I was just curious and got an eye opening experience. Use the material in this book. It could save your child's life.

This is my favorite childrens book. It helps children see the wonders of the world God made. It is very well written and one of my 3 year-old's favorite books. This illustrations are wonderful also. My daughter loves to find to all of the things that God made on each page. It is too bad this book is out of print, find it if you can.

Wonderful book for young children. Shows a family of children who see and appreciate the wonders of God's world everywhere they go. Cute pictures, too. My kids love it!

This is a great book to introduce children to the paintings of Henri Matisse. Best of all the rhyming text captures a childs attention and helps with language development. As an art teacher and a soon to be mother, this book is on the top of my list.

Of course, you want to do these stretches in privacy and not by the copier or in the elevator depicts! But it is good to know what to do to get rid of that "hunched-over" look and feeling so many of us start to take on about midday. And you need a calendar anyway (particularly if you are not a Palm-pilot type, like me) so why not one that helps you take care of your mental and physical health?

The Magical First Day is a cute book in which all school children can relate. Written from a student's point of view, this book allows the young (and old) reader to reflect on their early school days and smile. This book brings to the reader a cute story as well as an appreciation for those teachers who have made a difference in our lives. If you have any young school children, I recommend you buy this book. I am a teacher and would enjoy seeing this book in the classroom!
