The Body's Map of Consciousness Volume 1: Movement

This Map really helped!
Every day, or so it seems, another 20 or so "Self-Help" books hit the shelves, reminding us that we are quite a bit less perfect than we would like to be, or at least think we should be. What fuels this river of words, pictures and techniques for making us more acceptable is nothing less than that voice from somewhere inside us telling us we're still not 'good enough', 'smart enough', 'thin enough', 'rich enough' or 'loved enough'. We have no clear notion of whose voice this is, how it came to occupy a place of such prominence within us, why it is so easy to hear and hard to ignore, and worst of all, what might actually constitute "enough" of anything.

The simple truth, according to one of the author's insightful models, is that:

"In relation to emotional history, the mind predicts and projects that if you behave a certain way...people are going to respond to you in a predicted manner...If you violate a "known" rule, behave non-habitually, allow yourself to be seen or your feelings to be known, a previously felt "negative" will be repeated." (p. 71 The Body's Map of Consciousness.)

We all know the variety of ways our own caregivers defined and expressed their "negative" messages to us, and learned that the easier way to not have to feel them again was to anticipate their judgments and apply them inwardly, before they did.

Our perception of judgments from without, coupled with the emotional pain we self-inflict when distancing ourselves from the nurturing we so desperately needed from our caregivers, translates unintentionally ands reflexively to physical patterns of defensive posturing. These postures (like cringing, ducking or hunching the shoulders) can quickly become habitual and unconscious defenses that insure that we don't allocate more energy or attention to potential hurts than is absolutely necessary. Consciousness IS an efficient, if occasionally short-sighted ally.

Integrated Awareness® is a gentle, non-invasive method for helping us to become more neutral and objective observers of our own non-conscious, defensive habits so that we may opt to drop some of them, or at least make adjustments to them that more appropriately reflect current, adult circumstances. "The Body's Map of Consciousness, Vol. 1" distinguishes itself from most other mind/body/emotion self-help books by clearly and coherently describing both how the various interwoven Physical, Mental, Emotional and Energetic systems constituting Consciousness interface and influence each other, and how we can help 'ourselves' by making better choices about how those systems might work more effectively for us in the days ahead.

The authors have taken great care to make the information in this book easily approachable to a wide audience. The movement sequences are extremely user-friendly and clear and all requirements for practicing some disciplined set of exercises "correctly" (like yoga or tai-chi for example) in order to succeed are thankfully absent here. This is an exceptional introduction to 'mapping' Consciousness, compassionately prepared and coherently presented, in a tone that encourages us to see ourselves more positively and to "be" who we are, instead of that person we thought we were "supposed" to be. This is a large order for a small (100 pp.) book, but it more than accomplishes its mission and whets our appetities for the next two projected volumes.

The Body's Map: A Guide to a Healing Experience
This book has served me well as a way to further my healing experience, and as a way to share information about Integrated Awareness with others. Lansing and Julie have done an outstanding job capturing the compassion and grace inherent in Integrated Awareness, and providing further opportunities for me for change, growth, harmony and healing in my life. I love this work, and I love this book.

Do the Exercises!
The Body's Map of Consciousness, Book I is the story of Integrated Awareness, a healing modality that is based on discovering for oneself that we can take responsiblity for our own health. The book guides one through certain movements that helped me discover feelings, beliefs and attitudes I was not conscous of holding. I have re-experienced body memories of my childhood that helped me remember what I really felt as a kid about my family, about the death of my grandmother and about the decisons I made as a kid. This helped me reassess beliefs I had about my childhood. Maybe my childhood wasn't as bad as I thought it was! Anyway, I really liked the book and I hope you will too. - Mary Caldwell

Buy this book! You won't be sorry.
This is an excellent book--Rember's stories are inventive, his prose is athletic and graceful, and the overall book is definitely worth a read. I'm from the west, and I found that Rember captures the land, the people, and the spirit perfectly--if you're from the west, you'll be grateful, if you're not, you'll be impressed. I'm online right now to buy the rest of this guy's books--so do yourself a favor and get this one.

readalicious
perpetually insightful Remerishnous. Ignore the large weird review, the other one has it right: rember is coming.

A Coming Author
I found this book by chance while visiting Sun Valley, Idaho. After reading it, I quickly went back and found all the remaining copies (3) available in the area and have given them as gifts to friends. Witty, captivating in concept, and at a deeper level, meaningful. Rember is definitely an author to be encouraged and watched. I wrote him my very first fan letter to encourage him to give us more "Coyote" tales.

Curiosity is why I read this book and it was amazing!
This book had me curious to begin with. It was written in 1939 and I was just fascinated with how it was like for a lesbian in that period. I loved the way the chapters were written and her introduction to the characters made me want to turn the page even more. I loved her psychology references as she attempts to explain why she and other's in her life are lesbians. It was enlightening to read her perspective of that time of life. I really enjoyed this book, however the words and lingo used in 1939 are quite different than the way we talk now. Even though I was expecting this.....I was marveled by how much I didn't know. This book I was going to share this book but I am keeping this one for my bookshelf!

The Endearing Honesty of A Woman's Life
My husband happened upon a copy of the original book in a thrift store and brought it home. It has now found a place of honor on my shelves. It takes you on Diana's journey through her self-discovery as a lesbian, through her brother's rejection of it, to the pain of heartbreak, to the lover that was a recurring interference, and to finally resting comfortably and contendly in the arms of the love that would be to stay. The book takes you through her childhood, her travels, and her education. She presents the story of a lesbian who is not out to emmasculate men, nor to promote women as the supreme goddess. She simply walked the road of her soul.

Compelling and realistic
This book was originally published in 1935. I was surprised to find that it was an honest, realistic telling of one woman's journey to accepting her orientation and owning love. No sensationalism here. One of the scenes was so startlingly similar to an experience of mine that I felt the hairs on the back of my neck raise. A lesbian-positive book that really brings forth the idea of authentic living and how to get there. That it was written 30 years before I was born gives me courage--if she emerged from her journey whole, then so can I.

Dog Driver
This is an excellent book for beginners as well as professional. It is the most detailed and updated book on the market. Covering finding the right dog, proper gear and how to use it (detailed photos) quality of food, daily care, medical needs, breeding, training, recreational, distance and sprint racing. I reccommend it to ALL beginner mushers.

Must Book for Dog Drivers
Dog Driver by Miki and Julie Collins is a book all who have ever wanted to drive a team, who are driving a team, or who have drove a team should have. It has something for everyone.

While considered a 'beginners bible' it has much to offer the established dog driver. Any dog drivers who feel that they dont need it are the ones who do need it.

The Collins Twins are probably the two best known dog mushers in Alaska who arenot on one of the competitive racing circuits, they are known for their competence and ability in getting a dog team from point A to point B . This book is a distillation of their experiences in a wide range of situations, and they have presented it in a clear and straight-forward manner.

They cover the topics in a thorough and effective manner, from getting started to trekking and racing. If sled dogs are your interest, you will want this book.

The bible of sled dog sports- outstanding!
Although the title implies that the book is for the "serious musher", it should properly read "any musher". Topics include nutrition, training, health care, distance and sprint racing, camping, breeding, buying, skijoring, etc. Each is dealt with in a practical and understandable manner.

From Worry to Worship: A 30 Day Devotional Guide
"From Worry To Worship" is a great devotional guide! Applying the simple principles Julie Morris teaches has helped me find freedom from worry and has taught me how to make every moment a moment to worship God. It was so helpful that I purchased 12 of them and gave them as gifts to friends and family. Now they are beginning to enjoy the freedom too! Thank you Julie!

A Wonderful Book That Really Works
It has been said by many theologians that worry is one of the most powerful weapons that Satan has in his arsenal. Worry, as most people know can cause innumerable problems in many areas of life. The Lord has used Julie Morris to write a book that counteracts this tool of Satan. This book, From Worry to Worship, gives explicit instructions on how to overcome worry through the worship of God through Jesus Christ and in the power and person of His Holy Spirit. Julie puts herself into the book, moving from the experience of worry into the appropriate scripture that relate it to the Lord and His Word. Then she guides us through the scripture and shows us how to relate it to the experience of worry. Then she gives us practical advice on how to apply what we've learned. I love the application part, 'do it'. The Bible states in James 1:25, "But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does." In other words the blessing is in the doing of God's Word. The blessing of being worry-free is in the doing of His Word as it relates to worry. Julie helps us to experience this great blessing from the Lord.
One of the most important things is how she teaches us how to pray about worry. Julie shares with us many of her beautiful, well-worded prayers about worry, written and prayed from her own heart to the heart of God. They serve as great tools in teaching us how to pray about our own personal problems of worry.
This book is well written in easy to understand language. It flows smoothly from one section to the other, making it easy to read and follow. The exercises in the book enable you to internalize the scripture and more easily apply them. Julie's book can be used in a number of ways. It is excellent for personal individual study, in a Sunday School class, in a Bible Study Group, in a support group, or with friends in your own home.
As a Christian for forty-eight years and a licensed, ordained Baptist Minister for thirty-four years with degrees from Baptist College of Florida, Louisiana College, and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, I recommend this book as the best that I've studied relating to the subject of worry. If studied and applied properly, The Lord will use it to set you free from the problem of worry and lead you into a life filled with praise, gratitude, and worship of HIM.
Thank you, Julie, for a masterpiece.
What a great title, FROM WORRY TO WORSHIP!

Devotional Guide with Depth
Julie Morris is an excellent writer and has a way of seeing the root of the problem. This is a very thorough devotional guide and gives many practical applications for working through your problems. Many devotional books I have used have just been a few paragraphs that have a good message and by noon I have forgotten all about it, but From Worry To Worship has much more depth.

Contains writings by 60 authors
This co-edited collection contains 41 chapters written by 60 authors. My personal favorites are #14, the hard to find "Raising Darwin's Consciousness" by Sarah Hrdy and #3, the previously unpublished "Doing Personality Research: How Can Feminist Theories Help?" by Abigail Stewart. The co-editors did a nice job of creating a valuable and informative collection that is also well organized with useful editors' commentaries.

Intelligent Psychological Perspectives Collected Here
The co-editors of this intelligent Reader are to be commended for their perceptive selections and editorial introductions and conclusion. Many carefully selected and arranged readings are included. Co-editor Blythe Clinchy is a co-author of the classic book "Women's Ways of Knowing" and co-editor Julie Norem has recently published a book about constructive pessimism, "The Positive Power of Negative Thinking." All of this is high quality psychology that suggests the field does have a future in the 21st century.

A comprehensive neo-Piagetian, post-Freudian tome
Gender is approached from a semiotic sensibilty decoding alluring cultural iconography.

Brilliance!!!
What a brilliant study these authors have compiled! Mandatory reading for anyone with an interest in the role of agriculture/food in the developing world.

Outstanding!
Global Food Projections to 2020...a critically important look at the way in which food policy will affect the changing dynamics of the global economy and the lives of billions throughout the world, and how we can develop new strategies to combat hunger and poverty. An excellent work!

A vision of the future!
Dazzling! The breadth and insight of this volume will lead you into some serious thinking about emerging global issues. I particularly liked the analysis of hunger and poverty in Africa.
While not a page turner, this book keeps your attention until the end on these pressing topics.

Fabulous recipes and marvelous presentation!
This book is even good reading... its humorous little anecdotes, sprinkled among the recipes and photos, reveal little-known facts and add even more vibrancy to the tone of the book. All of the recipes that I have tried (about 15) have turned out beautifully, with my guests begging to know from what restaurant I bought the take-out! Greek with Gusto has de-mystified what was to me formerly a very foreign cuisine.

Great authentic flavors and lower-fat healthy eating.
These recipes are very usable and the flavors are wonderful. I love Greek food and now I can make it at home. I really appreciate the lower-fat focus that these recipes have. Greek friends rave about this cookbook -- they're the true experts and it has passed their taste tests. The food photos are clear and very appealing. The illustrations and commentaries also make it terrific to read.

Fantastic, easy-to-follow recipes
I have made several recipes in this book and have had complete success with all of them. I love the illustrations and the step-by-step instructions. Anyone can make delicious Greek food with this book!

Interesting for all - not just women or quilters
Before I bought the book I saw the video three times. When I was watching it at home, one by one my family sat down and joined me. The panoramic view of American history through the quilts the women made from the Revolutionary War up through the 1800s was fascinating and touching. An excellent video and an excellent book.

Hearts and Hands
I used the accompanying video in a workshop I taught at the University level. What a heartwarming and accurate trip through womens' history, linking us to them through a common craft. The book successfully informs us of their political and social challenges as we view the gorgeous creations of their hands. The music score is vital to portraying the feeling, as well, and is perfect to the subject.

I recommend viewing the video for any who are interested in womens' history or in the folkart of quilting.

American Women "Revealed" through their Quilting
The story of how women used quilts not only as bedcoverings, but as mementos of their friends, artistic expressions in bleak lives, political commentary when they didn't have the vote, fundraising, slogan flags--more ways than imagined! Quilts were even considered a symbol of women's repression at one time! An interesting slant on the role of women in American history (the keepers of morality!). Excellent pictures, great inspirations, and lots of fun! This book was the reference basis for the book and movie "How to Make an American Quilt."
