An indispensable little book for all students of French.
This wonderful little book -- about the size of a deck of cards -- is a small miracle. Each facing page is devoted to a single verb, and has very clear, concise conjugations in all tenses. There is also a handy index of many, many verbs -- and a link to the page of a verb that is conjugated the same way.

The small size is great -- easy to stick in a pocket or purse -- and the soft plastic cover resists wear and tear. I've had mine for almost 6 years, and the binding is still in perfect shape.

I can't say enough about the book's ease -- and speed -- of use. Whether in French class or doing my homework, it literally takes only seconds to find a verb's correct tense..

This is the most helpful supplementary French book that I've encountered.

Convenient, easy to use, a must-buy for French students
This is a much better choice than 501 French verbs. It is smaller, cheaper, convenient and very durable. I bought my copy 9 years ago and it is still intact, the pages are not falling apart. You don't need 501 verbs, you just need 100 something. This handy reference also has an index of frequently-used verbs which can be refered back to the 112 verbs listed. Examples of usage are also given. I recommend my students to buy Collin Gem French Verb Tables.

Great for Travel
Nice, Compact, useful words for traveling in and around Europe!

An excellent dictionary for beginning to advanced levels.
The Collins Gem Language dictionaries are extremely convenient to use, even with one hand! Because of their size and ease of use, they are non-disruptive if one forgets or needs a word in conversations. Using this dictionary, beginning through advanced level students can read modern newspaper articles and liturature. The entries are correct and usually always give a variety of correct pronouns for use with verbs in idomatic cases. As a German teacher, I recommend the Collins Gem German Dictionary above Langenscheidt's. It is smaller and more convenient, less expensive, and the entries are more correct and easier to read.

Invaluable companion for foreign travellers in Japan
This book is the perfect pocket-size companion for foreigners living or travelling in Japan. The book is small and lightweight, so can be taken anywhere. Despite its size, the content is more comprehensive than most larger size dictionaries and the Japanese is written both in Kanji/hiragana (useful for showing to Japanese people) and Romaji. There are clearly presented usage examples and key words are explained in more detail. The detail of this book makes it useful to anyone studying Japanese from beginner to advanced level.

Excellent tool for English speaker
Best English-to-Japanese dictionary I've owned. Good binding with all-weather plastic covers. Gives romanized and Kanji/Hiragana spellings of words, and invaluable example sentences. The book contains a surprising range of words. One weak point: the dictionary does NOT ALWAYS give the polite forms for verbs (e.g., does URU become URIMASU or UMASU ?). To complement Collins/Shubun's dictionary with another dictionary listing (among other things) verbs in both dictionary AND polite forms, in romanized form only, try ISBN #0-8048-1588-7

Collins Machetes And Bowies 1845-1965
The book has alot of information. I own one of the old Machetes and it was quite interesting to read about it. I would highly recommend this bood to anyone owning a Collins Machete.

major work on the machete and bowies
Since I appear many times in the text of this book as an observor, as a facilitator, and as a source, it may be considered presumptuous for me to review it. But since I am competent to do so, here goes. Ed and I knew each other from 1971 when we first met. Since I am in MD and he was in CA our face time was limited but we kept in close touch by snail mail and phone. He made many trips to the source at Collinsville and I dug a large amount of materials out of the National Archives, Smithsonian, and the Library of Congress. Since Ed focused strictly on Collins products and only on the sub lines of machetes and I am interested in all military edged tools and cutlery as well as axe work in general, we overlapped our interests. Is this the book I have written or would have? Certainly not, but I know for certain that it is all in focus and, unless there is a new vast discovery of documents, if there is anything more to be known about Collins machetes you can put in a very small pot. By focusing as he did Ed was able to find things that I never did nor even thought to look for. The ultimate test of this kind of book is is it interesting, and is it useful? I think it is so, and I wll be able to chop out all the corporate history which was in my original work and refer the reader to this one. Carter Rila

Daisy favorite
I run HIV/AIDS Education workshops for my Girl Scout Council. This book is part of the Daisy (Kindergarten) program. The girls love the story and the illustrations. The Leaders are impressed with the sensitivity in dealing with the subject of HIV and the very young.

A winner! A sensitive treatment of a difficult issue.
A child and his parents learn to deal with the discrimination faced by the boy's new friend and classmate who has AIDS. The story is well-written; the illustrations are colourful and appealing. A good read!

If Resources Are Limited....
Athletes are coached to "play within themselves" while striving to set new performance standards. In the business world (as Buckingham and Coffman explain in First, Break All the Rules), the most effective managers are those who focus almost entirely on their people's talents and get those talents in proper alignment with the tasks to be completed. The United States military services (especially the Marine Corps) take an entirely different approrach: Through what is indeed basic training, they require everyone involved to master essentially the same skills, within the same schedule, under the same conditions, etc. Only later are graduates of this rigorous process selected to receive more specialized training, usually according to their talents.

This book will be especially valuable to those organizations which have limited resources to invest in formal training. More than 90% of what is learned in any workplace is the result of on-the-job (i.e. informal) training. Collins and Bolger have obviously taken a close look at all manner of formal training programs, including those in the military srevices. They also fully understand the importance of informal training. If your organization has limited resources but a great need to increase the value of its human capital (i.e. increasing the quantity and -- especially -- the quality of what they understand and what they can do), what this book offers would be an excellent starting point. I'm not damning with faint praise. Eventually, if and when appropriate, I would then recommend Peter Senge's The Fifth Discipline and The Dance of Change.

All organizations, regardless of size or nature, must constantly focus on increasing the effectiveness of on-the-job training. There are always at least a few people in each corporate department or small-to-midsize company who are both knowledgable and passionate. "They really know their stuff." They love to explain what they do and how they do it. Others probably think of them as "born teachers." Put them to work as trainers and be sure to reward them generously for their services. Provide books such as Collins and Bolger's to assist their preparation. One effective strategy is to have them conduct what I call "brown bag seminars." Employers or supervisors provide the food and beverages, welcome the participants, wish them well, and then leave the room. Any organization's most valuable assets really do "walk out the door at the end of each day." It is also important to remember that those assets are located between two ears.

Easy to Understand Approach to Training -- Pratical
A very good read if you are looking to improve the quality of your training programs. Stresses the importance of continuity, breadth, and the leadership role. If you are tired of elaborate and expensive training programs which are difficult to develop and sustain (and therefore not that effective!), you might want to try this book out! I have never served in the military yet found it quite useful. Good civilian application if you understand the military.

We love this yummy book!
My children and I very much enjoyed this book of big desserts. This delightful story of a President who requires larger and larger desserts each night really captured my children's imaginations. We read it three or four times just the first day. My seven year old was excited to read it herself to the rest of us. It continues to be a popular request at bedtime with all my children ages 3,5 & 7.

My kids love it!
My kids love reading this book about giant desserts! They ask for it all the time. It's rare to see a book with such imagination these days.

This book fills the void....
* * * * * FIVE STARS - EXCELLENT ! ! !

Given the importance that money plays in the harmony of a marriage, it's hard to think of a more important topic in either the aisle of books on Investments or the aisle on Relationships. Yet the topic seems to "get lost between the cracks" of these two gendres. This book fills the void by examining couples' attitudes toward money, by providing insight into the nature of our discourses, and by advising with much practical information and case-studies.

Reaching into her background as a psychologist, Victoria Collins believes that our attitudes towards money are rooted in our childhood. "Your financial life from cradle to Jr. High School deserves a second look", she suggests. The author also looks at other influences ranging from parents to church to contradictory expectations in the post woman's movement era.

But Couples & Money book does not over indulge in theorizing. It gets down to earth with worksheets, 10 essential truths, and numerous examples of real life financial counseling sessions. Most importantly for me, Collins deals with games men & women play vis a vis money. She gives advise for the most effective manner to address financial issues, using what she refers to as "MoneySpeak". Collins begins by asking "why does everyone find money so damn hard to talk about?" She then proceeds to advise couples how they can change their communication mode from one of confrontation to one of collaboration

An excellent book for couples wanting to get their money goals in-synch and, more importantly, wanting to improve their relationship. Victoria Collins' essential message is reflected in her comment: "As we all know, it (money) never really buys lasting freedom, security, love and power, but only a temporary facsimile of those states. To feel really free, secure, loving, and powerful requires emotional maturity, an integrated sense of personal value money cannot buy."

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!!

The Solver's Vademecum
Anne Bradford's Crossword Solver's Dictionary would be my first choice, along with Chambers, to take on my desert island. It is a most dependable source of inspiration for the crossword solver.

For the past forty years Anne Bradford has been scrutinising every puzzle that she has encountered. She has broken down the clues into definitions and cryptic definitions and has carefully recorded and stored all the words, including those that indicate anagrams, reversals and puns. It is for this reason that this volume is so valuable in decoding the cryptic clue.

Even the most obscure word can be found under its every day definition. If you are searching your memory for a word meaning fidget, for example, just look it up and she gives you: fantad, fanteeg, fantigue, fantod, fike, fuss, fyke, jimjams, jittery, niggle, trifle, twaddle, twitch and uneasy. Word-length, crossing letters and subsidiary indications do the rest. If you are looking for a fish she gives you two pages of them!

I have found that this book makes solving the most difficult puzzle (including those of Ximenes and Azed) an easy task. It is undoubtedly the best of the solving aids available and I have no hesitation in recommending it to débutante solvers. The experts already have it on their bookshelves!

Solving Made Easy
Anne Bradford has used her 40 years of crossword solving and setting to produce an essential aid for the crossword fan. She has examined every cryptic clue that she has tackled over these years and has compiled a dictionary that includes even the most obscure references. I find that this book can half my solving time and, when creating puzzles, it is a magnificent thesaurus. I can certainly say that this is the best crossword dictionary available.
