John From Brooklyn
After reading this book I realized I'd missed something... 45 years of leading a HEALTHY successful life! After 25 years climbing the corporate ladder on Wall Street I had lost my health, my family and career. And I consider myself lucky... I saw co-workers lose their lives.

I was so inspired by this book that I donated $1,000 worth of copies to my alma mater so future graduates will have a head start. This book should be in every public school curriculum and on every college Freshman Reading List!

I wish my parents and teachers had taught me what I learned from Susan Ford Collins in one week!

WOW!
I just bought this recently, and it is much better than I even expected. I have a bunch of camping books in my library, and this one is better than many more expensive adult books. It has great advice even for adults, but is indespensible for camping with kids. It teaches you how to build a fire safely, cooking on the fire, (great kid favorites recipes), dealing with bugs, how to pick a camp site, what kind of Lots of safety tips too. The fun drawings make this a pleasure as well.

The authors show you how to make a reflector oven. The main feature if this book is the fun activities for around the fire such as stories songs, games, etc. Teaches kids how to identify the stars easily and even identify features on the face of the moon. I plan to use this with our Cub Scouts.

Great for Novice and Experienced Campers Alike
This book flows like the campfire. From gathering the supplies, to lighting the fire, to the blaze, to the dieing fire, to the embers it's an enjoyable experience.

It has lots of activities: stories, songs, skits, etc. to make your campfire an enjoyable experience.

I wish I had owned this book when I taught a Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation for teaching Cub Scout Adults about making a successful overnight campout.

This book has been added to my library and will be suggested at all future BALOO trainings.

Excellent source for camping with children
I am a girl scout leader and was looking for a book to help me on my first trip with young children (grades 2-4). It provided me with useful recipes for cooking on coals, cooking in a pit, or even a reflector oven. This book has many good suggestions for campfire games and even activities that can be used for achieving try-its or even junior level badges. Summer stargazing and moonwatching are covered in detail. This is a great book for beginners or experienced campers. You must have this book if you enjoy the outdoor overnight experience.

My Louise
Reading David Collin's My Louise was a very moving experience for me.

Having "lived" through a similar experience, I can relate to much of the content, meaning and feelings described by David. Although my wife was fifty-six when she died of cancer, and I didn't have a two year old daughter to raise alone but four grown sons to be concerned about, I was easily able to relate to David's agony, his great feeling of loss and particularly his loneliness. He took me back to 1989 when I suffered my loss.

I was powerfully moved by David's story, his grief journey and his enduring love for not only Robin but for Louise, as well. His total commitment to give Robin as normal (whatever that is) a childhood and life as possible makes me feel good for Robin. She was so unlucky to lose her Mother at such a young age but so lucky to have such a caring and committed Father.

David's portrayal of Louise and the courage displayed by both Louise and David, which came shining through in this memoir, was most moving.

I thank David for freely sharing so much of himself and his family. It was a privilege to have had the opportunity to be allowed to share such an intimate experience.

Perseverance amidst prodigious tribulations
At some point or another--and whether we like it or not--we are bound to experience tragedy within the course of our lives. For some, that personal loss may refrain until we've spent innumerable years with our loving spouse, but for others, a tragic blow may be dealt much sooner and with absolutely no remorse. In David Collins' case, he was forced to watch a ravenous cancer steal away his young wife's life, and as if that wasn't enough, he was then left to raise their new daughter on his own. His memoir is an account of experiencing a horrid loss, but also of how to pick up the pieces and move on with life, if only for their daughter's sake. Fortunately for Collins, however, his daughter (Robin) provided one true tangible link to his lost wife. And throughout the struggles of raising a child without his Louise, he hints at the idea that--without Robin--moving on after such defeat may have been impossible.

What Collins has done so efficiently (along with his intense appreciation for aesthetics) was to encompass all the feelings that one might have while losing their spouse, and then vividly depict them throughout the story. At one point, he personified the disease, citing several times how he would have liked nothing better than to pummel the rapacious cancer from his wife's withering body. He was tired of failed treatments and hospitals; he just wanted to get this disease in a ring and duke it out.

Furthermore, Collins aptly described the frailty of life, which most of us tend to forget about until real disaster strikes. Amidst his drowning in a sea of hopelessness, he yearned for powers beyond his reach - anything that could save his young wife, he was ready to do. Yet the harsh reality of this world proved that there was nothing more that could be done. His defiance of the impending loss seemed as obstreperous as his wife's own battle with the unabated cancer, but Collins (appropriately) never delved too far into the details of Louise's personal struggles. He may have stripped his own emotions down to their purest and rawest form; but he managed to give the reader a heartfelt glimpse of Louise's suffering without being superfluous.

These were real emotions that any one of us could feel, and Collins held nothing back when expressing his disgust for Louise's cancer. And while he hints at an ambivalent God during his incessant bouts with frustration, he manages to exert hope that perhaps someone up above took his Louise for a good reason.

From his indelible love for his wife and countless battles with his precocious daughter, to a brief stab at imperialism and questioning of piety, Collins has written a daring work, one which I thoroughly enjoyed. I found that I shared with him many of the same opinions: relationships (and marriage) are not always utopian, but with mutual work, life with your loved one has the potential to be sublime. Moreover, when that fortuitous battle arrives (be it cancer or some other tribulation), it can be vehemently fought as a team, not unilaterally.

We don't ever want to give in or give up, but how do we carry on when that battle has been inexorably lost? As Collins stated, "...a miserable situation can be endured..." but that doesn't mean it's going to be easy. This story of grief seems like it could only be found within the pages of a book, but the fact of the matter is that it did happen; it happens to both good and bad people, and it's going to happen whether we like it or not. The true task is perseverance and subsequently finding the needed strength to carry on. For David Collins, he found his strength each day when he looked at his daughter. He had to carry on, if not for Louise, then quite simply for Robin.

My Louise: A Memoir
Ever been on a rollarcoaster of emotions~we all have and this book does just that through words and the overwhelming history of love and loss~given to David by fate. I laughed, cried, and truly "felt" the words David Collins used in his book. I picked it up and couldn't put it down because he let the reader feel his pain through the eyes of a husband struggling through his personal rollarcoaster. In the end, you just wanted to love him for who he was and what he has done for himself and his daughter. Powerful. Pick it up and enjoy!

Bipartisan Historical Pictorial Dog Book
"Name That Dog" is a bipartisan dog book [coffee table size] that showcases your favorite presidents, whether Democrat or Republican, with their canine companions. This book is replete with historical photographs [black & white] dating back to Rutherford B. Hayes [1897] with his favorite spaniel, "Dot." Also included are celebrity dogs [Bob Hope with "My dog", Joan Rivers with "Spike," Phyliss Diller with "Phearless"] and many others ...

If you like dogs and history, this book makes a great gift item!

Need more info
I'd like to buy this book but first would like more information about it such as which celebrities and other people are in it. Thanks to anyone who answers my question. It appears to be a very good book.

Exceptional Photography
I loved it! This is a book worth ordering, especially if you're appreciative of nostalgic photography. The photos in this book are priceless.

El Cordobes Comes Alive in this "Ole" Bio!
Perhaps one of the best biographies I have ever read, this book tells the story of the fabled Spanish bullfighter Manuel Benitez "El Cordobes"!

Born in strict poverty, this youngser defied all the odds in becoming perhaps the most famous modern day "toreador"! His phenominal rise to fame is truly something out of a novel! El Cordobes, desperate, illiterate, starving had one dream, to become a bullfighter. And the odds were stacked heavily against him. This noble profession certainly had no room for such a peasant! But the heavens were looking out for him and rise he did. With the help of an influential patron, El Cordobes succeeded, and with a fervor almost unparalleled. This is no "dull biography" but a gripping one, complete with all the ingredients of a first-rate novel! (Billyjhobbs@tyler.net)

A Book Destined to be a Film
I have owned this book (in paperback form) for 30 years. Never have I read a book so entertaining that I could sit there and not put it down. Because of this book I developed an interest in matadors and tauromachy that is with me to this day. My only question is....Why isn't this book a movie? It has all the elements for a major motion picture. It just needs the right director and script. With all the attention focused on people who speak Spanish...now is the time to "strike while the iron is hot"..so to speak. This book is well-written and well-researched. I always felt I was right there beside El Cordobes ...the authors made him come to life on every page. Someday I want to go to Spain to visit all the cities, towns and villages named in this book. Anyone interested in the life of a courageous young boy who overcame insurmountable odds....has to read this book. It's fabulous! My personal favorite for 30 years!

THE LOVE OF POWER AND THE POWER OF LOVE
This book demonstrates how all men are not equal. I was enthralled, horrified and moved by the story of El Cordobes, the famous bullfighter and his rise to the top of his profession. His strength and courage in the bullring, his quest for literacy and latterly for the right to medical aid regardless of ability to pay kept me rivited until the end. The style of writing is fluid, and the tight focus on the chronology make the story fascinating. Even if bullfighting is not your average sports scene, this is a must read - the excitment, custom and fragrance of the corrida emanate from every page.

Please Remain Seated Until the Ride Has Come to a Complete Stop: Dave Collins Memoir

An Inspiring Fight for Life
Dave's candid, detailed writing of his bought with cancer gave me the shocking truth of the hell he experienced during several relapses and the ensuing treatments. His fight for life was very inspiring. His experience with HMO's as a cancer patient is frightening.

Excellent from an insider's perspective!
My husband is Mike, the nurse who took care of Dave. When he read it, he said everything was as brutally honest as Dave wrote that it was. Dave has found a way to express all of the emotions, thoughts, situations, etc. that are experienced by someone living with leukemia. I have read the book and I was engrossed the entire time and I think I would have been even if I didn't know several of the people in the book!! It is a touching book that I would highly recommend!

What a Ride!
This book is honest, gutsy, raw, and at times hilarious. If you've never been in David's position, I guarantee you'll come away with a very real sense of what it's like to fight this disease. His ability to describe his feelings, pain, and attitude in every moment are spellbinding. You're with him every step of the way - many times when you don't want to be. This is an amazingly warm, funny, and heart-wrenching book. It isn't for the weak of heart but worth every minute of the ride!

A Review of 'The Question' by Dana Barbour
This novel both intrigued and concerned me as I enjoyed the science fiction aspects but was ever aware that the political implications are reality-based. Dana Barbour's character development is excellent, and he does an excellent job of integrating the plot with current sociopolitical issues. The Question is challenging intellectually but definitely read-worthy! If you wonder about implications of current political events, read Dana Barbour's The Question...it's in his book!

a scienc fiction epic that seems to parallel our future fate
THE QUESTION HOLDS MY ATTENTION AS IT SEEMS MORE FUTURE REALITY THAN FICTION.IT IS HUMAN NATURE TO DENY OUR PROBLEMS AND DISASTERS SUCH THAT IMPENDING CONTROL OF OUR FATE MAY RELY ON OUR ABILITY TO FORESEE A SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT THAT IS NOT INDEED BENEVOLENT. IN A MODERN FAST PACED LIFESTYLE, IF WE LET OTHERS MAKE OUR DECISIONS WE GIVE UP MANY OPTIONS TO CONTROL OUR FUTURE FATE. THIS BOOK SHOULD SOUND AN ALARM TO ANY FREE THINKING AWARE READER.

Formation of a just society
This book combines a engrossing science fiction plot with it's mind challenging and thought provoking philosophical discourse. In this age of apathy and cynicism this is a book by someone who dares to give a damn, and that is refreshing.

No simple answers here but persistent readers will come away with their minds expanded.

Amazing, riviting and gripping
You'll never look at the world the same again.
Closely examines the personal, physical and global implications of what the psychics with the author and against the author.

Not a how to, but defintely a good read for anyone looking to get into the "occult" with inspiring, gripping and at times frightening accounts of what has transpired.

Excellent.
I am from the local area that this book talks about. I have visited the sites and I've almost taken on the role of my own investigator. The follow up books are really worth a read and the one called "The Seventh Sword" is a masterpiece. I highly recommend that Title as it covers the regions of England and the fight of Light and Dark.

Excellent account of black alchemy in Great Britain.
The follow-on to THE BLACK ALCHEMIST, this book holds the readers' undivided attention as it records the investigations of the author and various friends into the practices of Black Magic in England. Living near several of the places mentioned within the book, and knowing of the local folklore, it held special interest. Excellently written, dealing with a difficult and controversial subject, and the whole atmosphere of the writing is offset with high quality drawings and photographs. I could neither put the book down not read it alone in the house.

The Last Safe House: A Story of the Undergound Railroad

Great book!
The Last Safe House is a fictional story with non-fiction stories in it. It tells about people in slavery during the mid eighteen hundreds. I recommend this book for kids 7 years old and up. They will enjoy the excitement of the story while learning about all the great African-Americans. I would give this book a four and a quarter stars. I think that you will have a good time with this book.

Superior in Every Way
Wow, does it make for persuasive argument if I just say this book is good? No, but Barbara Greenwood's "The Last Safe House"" is a must for anyone interested in the topics of slavery, underground railroad or 19th century history, (America or Canada).

What makes this book so special is that it is so much more that just a young adult novel. Yes, there is a fictional story being told here, but mixed into the fictional story are non-fictional side bar stories. So for example when the story starts to tell of a nefarious slave catcher, the author stops the fiction and starts giving us a real background of slave catchers and how they operated. Basically the footnotes for her story become part of the story. And believe me it is not distracting at all. It's almost like Barbara Greenwood is sitting us next to a fire and telling us the story and pausing every once in a while to more fully explain some things.

I also loved Heather Collins's illustrations. We are not talking the fine art you occasionally see in juvenile books, but we are talking very functional drawings that not only add to the story but to our general understanding. I would love to have a poster size picture of her drawing of "A Cotton Plantation."

In addition to the great design of this book, there are some story details that are often skipped over in many other similar type books. First off, she tell the story that slaves were still not completely free even if they made it to Canada. Also while Canada may have been the land of the free, it was not completely free of prejudice.

I collect books about the underground railroad as a hobby. And Barbara Greenwood's "The Last Safe House will be one of my most recommenced reads.

Snip, snap, snout, my tale is told out . . . . :-)

Sensitive and Sensible
The Last Safe House is a blend of good research, good writing, enjoyable illustrations and activities to make the subject come alive for children. Greenwood spins a simple central tale of an escaped slave family and one of the families who helps them reach freedom, and uses this story as a springboard to a larger picture - the history of black slaves in America, the hero(ines) of the Underground Railroad, the whole question of justice and prejudice. Greenwood does not sugar-coat the issues or her characters - her protagonists are real children, who sulk, bicker and wish to be popular just like children do in every age. There's also a delightful lack of smugness about the presentation - this isn't a 'look at the wonderful white family helping out the poor black refugees' story, or even a 'look at the wonderful Canadians saving people from the terrible Americans' story - it's a book that examines a huge and complex issue in childsize pieces, in a sensitive yet sensible manner.

In my opinion, this book is award-winning material...it has solid worth, and the illustrations and activities combine with the adventure in the story to produce a captivating whole (for children and adults alike). Bravo to Greenwood and Collins!

Fun, Mindless Fun!
How I love Jackie Collins!! These days, there are so many boring, insipid books lurking under the guise of being "deep" or "insightful" - when really they're just high-minded nonsense. Jackie Collins is the antidote.

Like all JC books, Sinners isn't about the plot, or the dialogue, or the writing. Sinners is about having fun. Jackie has created a bunch of interesting characters, and then thrown them into a story full of sex, drugs and movie stars!! A completely fun book - not deep, not insightful, not anything remotely high-minded. Sinners is just about enjoying a book - it's like gossiping over coffee.

I love Jackie Collins
I've been a fan of Jackie Collin's work since I was a teenager. I spent many hours reading about love, lust and sex in the trendy show biz world in my youth. This new short novel format gave me enough of a Collins fix without having to stay up all night. I was still able to get to work on time. Enjoy.

vendetta lucky's revenge
jackie keeps your nose in this one following lucky's revenge on those who cross her or her love ones. I am within 50 pages of completing this book and nearly having withdrawals already. I am frantically trying to find some more titles by jackie that i have not yet read. I've read titles by all the greats such as mary higgin clark, danielle steele, sandra brown, toni morrison, etc and although they are all great, jackie is by far the greatest with keeping you interested. when lucky was created i developed a new friend. keep up the great work jackie and keep those books coming pleeeeeese!
