Very good
An excellent historical mystery, with Collin's Nate Heller filling the role of an real-life private detective who investigated the murder of Sir Harry Oaks.

Look for the reference to Dick Tracy that Collins ames at the end: "It hurts."

Intense storyline
A fitional novel about an actual event that held my interest better than any other non-fiction books on the Death of Sir Harry Oakes

A masterful feat in telling Caroline's story
God has most assuredly given her a gift for writing. She has accomplished a masterful feat in telling Caroline's story. To be able to deal with the past, reliving the experiences and the emotions that accompanied them with such sensitivity and compassion, is indeed remarkable. The story form, the depth of her insights, and the grace with which she has chosen to reveal the truth combine to make this a book that will bless and enable others who have had similiar experiences. I fell blessed to have been given the opportunity to read her story and to experience the beautiful and deeply spiritual person God has created within her.

A moving adult Fairy Tale.
This is a moving adult Fairy Tale about the blending of the birth and adoptive self of Caroline. The story unfolds to learn the life and feelings of Caroline as an adopted child/person. As the story developes there is blending of Caroline as a birth child and Caroline the searcher as they become one after search and reunion. This book is a delightful writing and a work of art as the reader moves from the young Caroline to her adult self as a while person. This is a MUST read for all touched by adoption.

An Outstanding Resource For Christian Coaches
Collins' book is an outstanding resource for the Christian coach - and for anyone else who works closely with people. His clear writing style and enthusiastic approach to coaching make this volume hard to put down. If you want to know more about coaching, or are considering being coached or becoming a coach, this is a "must read."

The appendices at the end of the book are a great resource for coaches - these forms, tools, and questionnaires are worth the cost of the book alone!

This book provides a long-awaited and much-needed introduction of the field of coaching to the Christian community. It is sure to have great impact!

Will recommend this book to all my clients!
Being a Christian coach I found this book reflective of the great opportunity that coaching provides. The "return on investment" for most client -- holistically -- is beyond anything we can comprehend! I will be giving this book to all of my clients!

It also provides foundational information that can be applied to whatever opportunities and challenges you are facing -- business, growth, balenace, financial, and others. It also applies if you're a CEO of a billion dollar corporation or a stay-at-home mom (which often has a more difficult job than the CEO).

Thanks Gary for writing such a dynamic book.

The Classical Roots of Ethnomethodology: Durkheim, Weber, and Garfinkel

on the recovery of lost themes from classical social theory.
In this well-written and important book, Hilbert demonstrates how key themes in classical social theory were lost or 'inverted' by Talcott Parsons. Hilbert goes on to show how Garfinkel's 'Studies in Ethnomethodology' (1967), and related work by other early ethnomethodologists generated a body of knowledge regarding actual social practices that stood Parsons on his head, thereby unintentionally 'recovering' some of the key insights lost to American Sociology through Parson's interpretation of Durkheim and Weber. A thought-provoking book whose insights can fuel further empirical work explicating the actual processes of the social world.

Standard reference for Western Europe (and lately Alaska!!)
Excellent book with comprehensive coverage and high quality plates. Book production quality is also high. My edition is small enough in hardback to be a true "Field Guide" although I understand that a new larger edition has been recently published, if plate quality is maintained this edition will be an excellent reference. If you have questions about this text go to amazon.co.uk and read some of the reviews there. This book recieved the British Trust for Ornithology seal of approval so anything an amateur like me might add is probably superfluous. Excellent reference, nice plates and informative and accurate text

Very helpful during my first visit to Europe!
This book help me a lot during several bird trips on my first visit to Europe in 1999. I have travelled in several countries. Sometimes with very keen birders, other times alone. It would be impossible for me to be in the field in conditions to identify so many birds, without this valuable book. Excellent pictures. It's my new standard on international field guides.

Most practical dictionary for ESL learners
Why is this book going out of print? It is the most down-to-earth dictionary of English that I have ever seen, with numerous excellent examples to illustrate usage. It is perfect for English language learners. I teach college English and writing, and every student who has seen this has been excited by it. The entries include information necessary for ESL students, such as countable and uncountable nouns, subtle differences in meaning, and idiomatic expressions. I keep it near my desk at all times, and prefer it over the standard Webster's or Random House dictionaries when working with students.

The best and well-presented English Language Dictionary
I bought this dictionary in May 1990 in Singapore.

The way the content presented is the best I had ever seen. This dictionary is written in ordinary, everyday English that is easy to understand. It has an excellent Guide to the Use of the Dictionary. Every explanation comes with at least one example that is taken from actual texts wherever possible. The extra column in the dictionary, right beside the explanation of a word, creates a visual attraction to the reader. This extra column is used to give two different types of information: grammar notes and semantic relationships (similar or opposite) for the word that is being explained. I love it.

CoBuild is the appreviation of Collins Birmingham University International Language Database. This dictionary was developed and compiled in the English Department at the University of Birmingham as part of a language research project commissioned by Collins Publishers.

Currently, I am looking for its enriched and/or, if any, CD-ROM version. Unfortunately, it seems that the publisher stopped publishing this great dictionary.

A superb dictionary
I consider myself extremely lucky when in 1998, while in Norway, I was offered this dictionary by the University of Tromso. I have always been fascinated by words and have collected quite a number of dictionaries, including what I had till then considered the best dictionary: Hornby's. But Collins is better because it offers more words and meanings and because it is also a handy encylopedia, an indispensable reference book you should always keep opened on your desk. (Buy a nice book stand to protect this treasure.) Also, I have always felt more comfortable reading the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet), which Collins uses (rather than that used in, e.g. American dictionaries).
Unfortunately, after 5 years of constant use and abuse of this dictionary, I will have to buy a new one. I understand, though, that the 1998 edition has not been replaced with a new one.

English Dictionaries - a review
Collins English Dictionary is by far and away the most marvellous dictionary I have ever used. As a Linguistics Major, and an active member of International Training in Communication, I find myself constantly referring to dictionaries - and Collins is the most favoured, of the many that I own.

Its invaluable for general knowledge, crossword puzzles, quizzes and for the sheer joy of reading!

I can't understand why it should be out of print - and I fervently hope that the publishers will see fit to reprint. [The 1979 version I find superior to the Millennium version.]

Essential and so convenient
This book is a treasure. I take it with me everywhere I go, packing it in my bags no matter how light I am traveling. The book is the size of a very small pocket dictionary, yet it contains maps of every country in the world, as well as an index with thousands of entries to help locate even small unknown localities. True, larger atlases show greater detail and may be more accurate, but this one you can actually carry in your pocket. It's helped me out many a time on my travels in trying to communicate where I'm from and where I am going when I share no common language with the people around me. Yeah, it's a little outdated now since it was printed before the demise of the Soviet Union, but I don't know what I would do if I ever lost it.

Small & compact
One of the smallest "atlases" of the world you can possibly get. It's a few inches tall by a few inches wide, about 1000 pages thick. Maps are detailed enough and cover very small sections (Britain, for example, takes up two pages alone). I keep this in my desk all the time and refer to it often. All the major cities in the world are available for look-up in the index reference.

INCLUDED
I BUILD FIRST AID KITS FOR FRIENDS. THEY MAKE EXCELLANT GIFTS. I ALWAYS INCLUDE A COPY OF THIS BOOK. WHAT GOOD IS THE KIT IF THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE TO USE IT DON'T HAVE A REFERENCE SOURCE. FOR IT'S SIZE, IT IS CRAMMED WITH AN AWESOME AMOUNT OF INFORMATION. THE BOOK IS SMALL ENOUGH TO NEVER BE LEFT BEHIND IF GOING ON A DAY HIKE. YOU CAN ACTUALLY FORGET YOU'RE CARRYING IT. I TRY TO KEEP A COUPLE OF COPIES OF THIS BOOK ON HAND. IT IS SIMPLY THE BEST BASIC FIRST AID BOOK ON THE MARKET.

Buy this book, it *is* useful.
There is NO use having a complete First Aid manual, sitting on your bookshelf, when accidents happen around your car, at work, at the beach etc. and not by your bookshelf.

The Collins First Aid book is tiny enough that you can actually have it around for an emergency. I put one in the car, one in the backpack that I carry around with my toddler, and one at home by the phone. Its diminutive size means that a woman can easily keep it in a purse, or a man in a larger organizer.
