A Return to Childhood
It took me nearly twelve years to locate a hardbound copy of this book, and was well worth it. I remember this book vividly from my childhood. My mother read it to my sister and I on rainy days. It is the story of a girl named Sophie who is visited by a hungry tiger with a voracious appetite for tea and biscuits. He ends up eating everything in the cupboards to satisfy his appetite.

It is a sweet story that is easy to follow and read along with your mom, or if you are like me, read all by yourself now that you are an adult. It made me not only want to have a pet tiger, but it made me want to travel to Europe, where the book is set. Sadly, I still do not have a pet tiger, but I have traveled to Europe!

If you are lucky enough to find it in stock - snatch it up quick - they go really fast!

The Tiger Who Came To Tea
I remember this book from when I was a kid. I recently purchased it for my own three children and they all love it. Highly recommended for ages 2-7.

My son loves this book!!
My nephew in the U.K. had this book and my son loved it. We had to buy him his own copy.
It is a story about a tiger who drops by for tea and end up eating everything in the house. He even drinks daddy's beer.
The book is out of print here but is still in print in the U.K. It is available at amazon.co.uk.

Great book! Filled with lots of useful information
This is an excellent resource book to have, because nowhere else can you find the information compiled the way that it is in this particular book. The author has obviously done his homework. There are colleges in this book that many people, myself in- cluded, did not even know existed. With so many people looking to get a quality education without having to own a bank to pay for the tuition, this is definitely a place to start!!

A comprehensive resource for students, parents, & counselors
J. Wilson Bowman has done an exemplenary job of providing a comprehensive resource for students, parents, counselors, and educational advisors. As a mentor for an At-Risk youth group in the San Francisco Bay Area, I will definitely recommend that all of our students and parents purchase and read J. Wilson Bowman's reference guide. I just wish that I had such an outstanding guide when I was in high school!!

America's Black and Tribal Colleges is an excellent resource
It is the most complete resource on Historically Black Colleges. Anyone thinking of going to college should review this book, particularly African Americans. After working in many urban school districts, I found that most High School Students want information on all of the options available to them. To Parents, Educators and Counselors who want to provide a full picture of the eduactional landscape, America's Black and Tribal Colleges provides great detail.

This is definitely one to add to your collection
Sally Collins has outdone herself with this book. In our modern day society, there is an emphasis on speed - everyone rushes around trying to squeeze in as many activities and projects into each minute of every day. This sometimes has the unfortunate consequence of less attention to detail and the result is sloppiness. In this book, Sally shows the quilter how to slow down and enjoy the process of creating each quilt block.

She starts her book with a chapter on Philosophy and Creativity and her deep love for quilting is very evident in the words that she uses. Phrases such as "..take pleasure in the journey", "..experience the joy and bliss that quiltmaking gives each of us". She views errors as "gifts...opportunities for success" and says that "problem solving is a real key to finding the joy in quiltmaking". With these statements, she removes the fear of making mistakes and turns errors into learning opportunities. She states that quality workmanship is not just about perfect sewing, but also knowing how to solve problems as they occur. One would be tempted to skip this introduction and jump right into the technique and block sections - this is a mistake. It may sound a bit corny, but after reading these pages, I was inspired at the prospect of making miniature blocks rather than being intimidated as I know most quilters are by the tiny pieces used in small scale blocks.

She follows the introduction with a detailed section on tools and explains what they are used for which is very helpful. A chapter on Color and Fabric is next and she does a wonderful job explaining the importance of color and fabric selection in general and also how to select appropriate fabrics for small scale blocks. There are a number of helpful example images that accompany the text. As we progress further into the book, we begin to learn about designing blocks and drafting. She goes into detail on how to draft blocks from beginning to end, a discussion that I found fascinating. Sprinkled throughout this chapter and each of the ones that follow, there are tip boxes titled "Noteworthy" that are filled with valuable information.

For the quilter interested in improving their accuracy in assembling blocks, the chapter entitled "Workmanship" is without question, the most valuable one to read - and should be read through several times to reinforce key concepts. Sally discusses various factors that cause problems from cutting to sewing to pressing. The bottom line is that the quilter needs to pay careful and close attention to each step of the process. Her quilting experience is evident in the tips on pinning, blocking, and measuring that she includes.

The last chapter before starting the block section deals with various construction techniques, such as assembling half square triangles, English Paper Piecing, and using bias bars. But, she does not stop there - she ends the chapter with a detailed and well illustrated tutorial on matching seams, a very important factor in sewing quilt blocks and one that is rarely addressed in instructional quilting books.

The Block Collection consists of forty-nine blocks with familiar names such as Churn Dash, Dresden Plate, or Bear's Paw and six of the blocks are her own designs. Each block is accompanied by a color photograph and includes template outlines and color coded measurements for three, four, and six inch blocks. She always includes a tip or two appropriate to the block, perhaps about construction or color selection. Each of these blocks is used in her quilt that she discusses in the last chapter. I was fortunate to see this quilt at a show and can vouch for its beauty and attention to detail. I spent several minutes looking at various blocks and marvelling at how well she put it together. If you are interested in making a similar one for yourself, she includes the instructions for the quilt along with fabric requirements.

She concludes the book with more eye candy in the form of a Gallery of full color photographs of quilts that she has made using the blocks in the book to whet the appetite of the reader. An alphabetic index and a brief biography of the author can be found on the final pages of the book.

It is well worth taking the time to read the book from cover to cover before embarking on the blocks. The instructions are clear and concise and well presented from a visual standpoint. This is definitely one to add to the collection!

How to use precision piecing methods
Sally Collins' Art Of Machine Piecing [...] tells how to use precision piecing methods to help attain quality quilts. Almost fifty traditional blocks are represented in the course of explaining how machine piecing works.

Excellent reference book for piecers!
FINALLY....a book that teaches the virtues of good workmanship. Sally takes you step by step through the methods of perfect piecing. No, it is not complicated and yes it will require an investment of time to create a beautiful quilt (as it should be). As Sally explains in the first few paragraphs of her book, the process is a journey to be enjoyed. She breaks down the information in easy to comprehend sequential steps. Master the "TECHNIQUES",(not rules),and beautifully made quilts will follow. This book will help you achieve positive experiences in your quilting adventures!

Groundbreaking and Painful to read
about how society conspire to restrain black women from realizing their potential as citizens in America. The racially skewed beauty standards is one. The relentless stereotyping of black women is another. Both tried to keep down the spirits of a group of women Americans trained to despise. I hope Ms. Collins comes out with another book about us.

Inspired
Patricia Hill Collins exemplifies a practitioner's and theorist's point of view on black feminism as it relates to Africa American and our African sisters. She references critical and inspiring data and quotes from a varied repetoire of authors, historians, and philosophers. The author explains the context and format of her subject upon initial reading. This book also draws commonalities among the issues and concerns among African American women and our international sisterhood (i.e., African, Carribean, etc.,) It illustrates the social and cultural values among all groups, the commonalities among the values while focusing on the African American feminist aspect. This is a must read for any person, be it woman or not, African American or other. It brings about a social and cultural understanding that is pertinent to the "holonomy" of understanding and appreciating varied cultural, social and historical values and experiences while commencing to the building of community. Please add this title to your collection of literature. You won't be disappointed; if for nothing more than to open your world to receive another perspective.

Insightful
Collins'analysis of black feminism is an enlightening piece of literature that forces its readers to chanllenge main stream assumptions and discover the underlying mechanisms of racism and sexism in America. To create this effect, she uses a range of feminist perspectives form the calm subtleties of Angela Davis to the slightly boisterous philosopy of Bell Hooks. Nevertheless, by displaying these perspectives equally Collins shows that the struggle for equally is not an individual struggle but one that requires collectively. This book is intensely thought provoking and it is guaranteed to give its readers profound insight into black feminism.

Colleen's talent for comedy shines through!
Having known Collen since college, I can attest to her flair for comedy, dialogue and plot. We've collaborated on a few writing projects together, and her talent as a writer an an editor is unparalleled. As a comedy writer (and peformer), she's combined the best of both worlds in this engaging tale of love lost, found, and rewarded. It's a definite mood elevator!

Collins's "Married After Breakfast" really delivered!
What can I say? Another heart-stealing, hug of a tale by talented author Colleen Collins. I look forward to every book she releases and mourn each ending, knowing I will have to wait a while longer for the next humorous romp. MARRIED AFTER BREAKFAST was no exception. Every time I prop my feet on my ottoman, I think it's going to meow . . . . Don't have a clue what I'm talking about? Well, heck, order the book! (You won't regret it. Scout's honor. Would I lead you wrong?)

You'd have to have a screw loose somewhere not to fall for
Bride on the Loose! Renee Roszel packs an island with the zaniest crew since Gilligan's Island. Dana's a fiance who dove overboard and ended up on Beena's cat-filled island, and Sam's the vet who rescued Dana from her watery plight. He could be the man of her dreams, but it's hard to have dreams when you have no memory . . . or are pretending to have no memory! They say laughter is the best medicine, but it's an even more powerful drug when combined with love. Dana and Sam provide readers with a dose of both!!

Christology: A Biblical, Historical, and Systematic Study of Jesus Christ
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (1995)
Author: Gerald O'Collins
Amazon base price: $22.00
Used price: $15.95
Average review score:

Superb - balanced, thorough, and original
Gerald O'Collins' impeccable scholarship presents the reader with a critical view of 2,000 years of thought regarding Jesus, and draws conclusions that are both fresh and orthodox. He is particularly talented in clarity of expression, and of explaining how ideas of various great theologians were useful or were misinterpreted in light of later historical developments.

I personally read this work as one of many studies in Christology, and anyone pursuing graduate study in theology knows how ideas can begin to all sound alike when the volume is high. Though I was new to Gerald O'Collins work, I found it so absorbing and stimulating (amazing, when one is wading through volumes) that it opened new doors of consideration in my own pursuit.

Though O'Collins's presentation of doctrine could not offend the Grand Inquisitor himself, this is no stale "fidelity to the magisterium" approach - the explanations are detailed, often including original insights, and refute any ideas which O'Collins sees as spoiling the integration of Christology and spirituality in the life of the Church. Whether it is Macquarrie, Schilebeecx, or Thomas Aquinas with whom he has a point of disagreement, the reasoning is excellent, and, whether one holds the same viewpoint or not, one can only greet the result with a certain degree of awe.

Christ - verily God and verily man
Professor O'Collins offers us a clear presentation of one of the most central topics to an orthodox Christian faith - the diety and humanity of Christ. This systematic presentation is fairly easy to read and its presentation is understandable to clergy and layman alike.

The author attempts to answer fundemental christological questions such as: How could Jesus be totally man and totally God? How could he be sinless and yet exercise free human will? How can his role as universal savior be reconciled with other religions?

O'Collins takes us through the beliefs and arguments from the earliest Christians, the Councils of Constantinople, Ephesus and Chalcedon, the Middle Ages and present. Subjects include Christ's resurrection, virgin birth, sinless life, and his role as savior and redeemer.

Very well written and highly recommended.

The vitality of orthodox Christology
O'Collins, Professor of Systematic and Fundamental Theology at the Gregorian University in Rome, has written yet another timely book on this central aspect of our faith. As C.C. Newman writes on the back cover:"O'Collins has produced a Christological accounting that is breathtaking in scope...[He] successfully balances the academic search for truth with practical concerns for justice and equality, all the while preserving the center of liturgical celebration...this book is steeped in, though not encumbered by, a thorough knowledge of all the problematic epistemological and hermeneutical issues. Carefully and lucidly written...this is mature book from a seasoned scholar on an important subject."

Contents include: 1:Some Major Challenges 2:The Background 3:The Human History 4:The Resurrection 5:The Son of God 6:Lord, Savior, God, and Spirit 7:To the First Council of Constantinople 8:Ephesus, Chalcedon, and Beyond 9:Medieval and Modern Christology 10:Divine and Human 11:Faith, Holiness, and Virgin Conception 12:Redeemer 13:Universal Redeemer 14:The Possibilities of Presence Bibliography, Index of Names, Biblical Index.

Other books of interest include: Trinity and Incarnation by Basil Studer, Incarnation-Myth or Fact? by Oskar Skarsaune, An Introduction to New Testament Christology by Raymond Brown, The Mystery of the Trinity by Boris Bobrinskoy, Trinitarian Theology East and West by Meyendorff and Fahey, The Gospel Image of Christ by Veselin Kesich. Collateral Language: A User's Guide to America's New War
Published in Hardcover by New York University Press (15 September, 2002)
Authors: John Collins and Ross Glover
Amazon base price: $55.00
Used price: $36.60
Average review score:

A great primer to the language of war
"war on terror," "pre-emptive war," "Anthrax," "Blowback," are some of the frequently used words by the trigger happy mullahs in washington. This book aims to illustarte the meaning behind these words. We saw how masterfully the words "Weopons of Mass destruction" were used to justify the occupation of Iraq by the Anglo-American forces. Now it is plain that all these false claims were used to woo the US public. Words such as these are being used by the bush admisnitration and the pentagon as simply and most centainly effectively as "Weopons of mass deception". This book tries to create an informed public by dissecting the rhetoric of the war mongers to create an informed public receptive to reason rather than fear.

Constructing a new world order
We live in an age where words like "invasion" and "pre-emptive war" are being bandied about in a frighteningly common-sensical manner. At a time when the US government seems to be set on embarking on a war that has faced consistent opposition, it has becomingly increasingly urgent for all of us to start questioning the nature of this common-sense: why has it become acceptable for policy-makers and media persons to talk about "attacks" and "regime-change" openly as a strategy to create a new world order; how "new" is this form of creating a world order; and what is the nature of the order that is being constructed? John Collins and Ross Glover's edited volume goes a long way in helping address these extremely important questions.
To say that the volume is timely is to state the obvious. What makes it invaluable is that the collection of essays attempts to historicize and bring to light the manner in which political contexts cannot be separated from what pass for rhetorical common-sense. Terms like "terrorism," "vital interests," and "fundamentalism" do not emerge in a vacuum. Understanding their meaning involves a closer look at the political context and the struggles within which they emerge. Collins and Glover have done a remarkable job of putting together a collection that does precisely that. Bypassing academic jargon, the authors have succeeded in making complex arguments accessible to a wide array of people. Collins' essay on "Terrorism" for instance, carefully takes the reader through the historical evolution of the term and the various meanings that have been associated with it during the three decades that it has been critical to US foreign policy. The essays on the concepts of Laura J. Riediehs) and "Civilization versus Barbarianism" (Marina A. Llorente) carefully delineate the manner in which concepts that are supposed to be universal and abstract, with meanings that supposedly make sense to one and all, are constructed in the context of political struggles. I could carefully go through each essay in the collection, but that might involved getting repetitive about what makes this collection so important. To put it in a nutshell, each essay in the volume is an excellent example of what political committed scholarship ought to look like. We live in a world where it is has become urgent for us to understand the dynamic and politically charged nature of the terms that are being used to construct a new world order. Collateral Language is a critical tool that needs to be used in this endeavor. The editing of the volume and its general tenor also make it a great text-book for any undergraduate course or high-school course- be it in Political Science, History or Cultural Studies. This book is a great and necessary read for anyone interested in contemporary politics.

Don't forget the lessons of wwII
WW II led to a couple of interesting works on propaganda: not
how to make your own, but how to recognise it, and how to avoid being taken in by it. In wartime we are perhaps as much in danger of propaganda and manipulation of information from our own governments, as from any other government. George Orwell wrote on how language is manipulated, in 1984 and Animal Farm. Less well known is Thouless "Clear thinking in wartime", with sections on such old favourites as propaganda speeches, and atrocity stories. Thouless' aim was to de-bunk the persuasive-sounding words, and get the reader asking how much hard fact lay behind them. Often, not much.
This new book, edited by Collins and Glover, should make interesting reading. As the generation who remember WWII are dying out, we are losing our knowledge on how to defend ourselves against propaganda. This leaves each citizen at the mercy of an enemy, and also at the mercy of their own govenment. All the war-mongers need to do is roll out a few old tricks, and people will fall for them, just like they did 60 years ago. We badly need books like this one, to help us think clearly in the coming months.
Some will doubtless say books like these are "un-patriotic", or "damage the war effort" or "put our troops in danger" . All that will show is that the propagandists have already started - such words make reading books like these more essential, not less.
