Well Organized and Insightful
I am currently enrolled in a course entitled The Psychology of the Adolescent Learner at Cleveland State University in Ohio, and this is the required text for the course.

Professor Santrock's text is well organzied; chapters 1-4 provide a solid conceptual framework in childhood development, then beginning with Chapter 5 the text goes into more specific topics such as Family, Sexuality, Culture, etc.

I greatly enjoy the way the chapters of this book are laid out. You are first presented with an outline to let you know where you are headed, then the chapter is broken down into "bite-sized" portions with plenty of definitions. The material is clearly written, concise, and thorough. I would recommend this text to anyone interested in studying about this enigmatic of all stages in the life cycle.

Classic study of an important topic
This book was first published in 1973, and the work of it was done mostly in the 1960's by Briton Dr. Bowlby. It's "Volume Two" of a trilogy, but does not have to read along with the companion volumes. Like his other two works on childhood, this interesting work, again, introduces his ideas and promotes a compassionate understanding of the lives of children.

Separation anxiety, anxious attachment, and other phenomena of attachment are well-known and accepted reactions now - we expect it from our pets as well as our babies - but at one time, were less well understood (and anticipated.) This work, lucidly and compassionately, lays it out for the reader. The book is divided into three sections, and in a well-organized and deeply accessible fashion, Bowlby proceeds. The Sections are "Security, Anxiety, and Distress," "An Ethological Approach to Human Fear," and finally, "Individual Differences in Susceptibility to Fear: Anxious Attachment".

Bowlby uses his own prior clinical work and that of others to support his assertions. The father's role, the role of anger and fear, and many other factors are discussed. This is a scholarly study, and has much to tell readers. It's thoroughly readable and interesting, not only for its subject but because Bowlby can tell a story and hold the reader's interest through-out. Not a "how-to" or a quick fix - rather, a deeply sensible and basic study. Highly recommended for parents, teachers, clinicians.

Beyond Closed Doors: Growing Beyond an Abused Childhood
Published in Paperback by Morehouse Publishing (1996)
Author: John Andrews
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Letters from a hurting child to the grown man during therapy
Beyond Closed Doors tells the story of a violently sexually and emotionally abused man. However, unlike many autobiographies, that was not its aim. The book is a collection of letters written by Little John to Big John during his therapy and healing process. They tell of the hurting child inside the adult man, and the fears that the man still carries because the hurting child was not protected. As a window into the therapy process, this book is without parallel. For any child abuse victim, these letters express the pain of the child within, and the adult's struggle to let the child be heard.

This book is so wonderful, a real tear jerker--at least it was for me. This is a must for any new parent and a great gift. Even if you arent a spiritual person this book is sure to move you. Having just become a mother myself, this book really touched my heart. It shows you what a true blessing the gift of a child is. This book is put together beautifully, with precious pictures and inspiring words of prayer, praise and promises for our darling babies.

Great book - suggestions easy to implement - very realistic
I got this book on audio tape because I travel a lot in my car. Out of the 5-6 books I have listened to over the past 3-4 months this was one of my favorites if not the favorite. Good suggestions, most easy to implement others harder because it is sometimes hard to let our kids learn some things on their own. I think using the principals in this book will help kids with their own confidence because they unterstand their own boundries better and will learn how staying wthin those boundries can be very rewarding and boost pride with the end result.

For anyone contemplating our caught up in a divorce action
Written by professional marriage and family therapists Kenneth and Janice Dimick, Child Custody: Achieving A Parenting Partnership is a practical, helpful and straightforward guide written for the non-specialist general reader who is going through the difficulties of a divorce where there are children involved. The focus is upon the American legal divorce system and how the standard proceedings tend to leave mothers without sufficient funds and fathers without sufficient access to their children. Child Custody explores methods by which parenting partnership can be achieved, allowing a couple to work together to raise children even though they no longer live together. Child Custody is very highly recommended, essential reading for anyone contemplating our caught up in a divorce action with child custody issues and concerns.
